#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Thank you for joining us tonight for #personalizedPD
Please welcome our guest moderator @julie_fishburn We are all excited to have you back leading the chat.
Good evening, #personalizedPD! Megan, AP at Olathe West High School (shoutout to @julie_fishburn for moderating!). Best way to stay warm on a cold day - coffeeee!! Also, chasing small children around. Then re-heating my coffee.
A1: My #personalizedPD goal this year has been to spread the knowledge and the opportunities for and to our Ts...once you get a taste you can't go back
#personalizedPD My goal is to listen more to the teachers I work with. Understand their needs. Continue learning best practices and share, share, share!
A1 I’m stretching myself to read more this year. My son completed the 40 book challenge last year, and I want to join him this year....reading at least 20 minutes a day #personalizedPD
A1) To learn as much about PBL as I can, and learn how to best teach it and inspire others! Also, to provide #personalizedPD opps for staff. Plan - read, research, and strategic planning!
Q1: Learning all I can about trauma-informed schools. Attending any conferences that I can and reading everything I can get my hands on. This is my passion! A name finally given to everything I believe about teaching! #PersonalizedPD
A1: Honestly, its a small goal, but to set time aside in life to focus on researching and exploring what I am personally interested in learning about. #personalizedPD
A1: My goal this year is about building community schools. How can find supports? How do we fund them? How does it help students reach new levels? How does it last? #PersonalizedPD
A1: Goal this year is to get more Ts on board with joining me at conferences. Especially @USMSpark and EdCamps. Don't want to overwhelm them with things like ISTE. #personalizedPD
A1 My personal PD goal is to usher in year two of our new professional support model focused on personal professional goals and to continue to explore new strategies to help my Ss learn and grow. #personalizedPD
A1: We want to learn from each other, inspire each other, and steal the best stuff! Tomorrow we start cross-discipline meetings after school with small groups to share stories. Will probably use "Game of Stories" to start us off! #personalizedPDhttps://t.co/KAd587v1s3
A2 More Twitter chats for me. Creating more opportunities for T choice in campus PD. Goal is at least one Wednesday a month. Plus doing optional Lunch & Learn events #PersonalizedPD
A2) Create the opportunity, start the conversation. Give permission for Ts to pursue their passions! Make it so enticing they can't stop thinking about it! #personalizedPD
A2: Conversations abt goals they would like to achieve to ensure that they are still meeting the needs of Ss are powerful...do not let the word "veteran" suffice...time does not equal ability...Ss change, so must we #personalizedPD
Can't ever get the Costa Rican pronunciation of Gilmore Girls out of my mind. Watched it a lot during our trip during the rainy season there. #personalizedPD#GeelmoreGurlz
A1: My #personalizedpd goal for the year is to make personalizedpd more accessible to more accessible to staff throughout the district. https://t.co/9jJp2WqluF
I always have a few books going at a a time....gives me daily reading options. Read Milk & Honey, poetry book by @rupikaur_ this weekend. Amazing read! Combing back through #personalizedPD
A2 I spread the gospel of Twitter, and how great twitter chats are, and how I’ve grown my PLN with it. It’s a slow go, but I’ll not give up! #personalizedPD
A2 ask for input, use a poll, create choices, ask Ts for ideas and encourage everyone to share something they are doing, start a conversation, #personalizedpd
Cool. I've got a spreadsheet organized by date and then I've plugged in 9 names to invite each time. Invited individually. We've got a good group coming tomorrow to share stories. Should be good. #personalizedPD
A2 Provide a framework that includes training for goal setting, time to meet, and expectation of reflection. Choice of PD inspired by full faculty and group like minded teachers based on goals. #personalizedPD
A3: Definitely have to tag @sarahpedrotti...ever since the day I first interviewed and mentioned #personalizedPD she has been supportive and on board, especially w/her own learning
Success can be found in persistence. I've had a few convos with colleagues that involve, "I was tired of you bugging me about it, so I did it. Now I'm really glad I did". #personalizedPD
I hosted a small one, and then hosted EdCamp Chicago this fall. It's a lot of work, but worth every minute of it. You need a great team effort. Let me know if you need any insight or help. #personalizedPD
A3: @mccall_kelley I feel that she trusts me to do what is best for my students and that goes a really long way, especially since she has an Early Ed. background, as well. In addition, she supports me in my growth to learn all I can about being trauma-informed! #PersonalizedPD
A2: with those that are reluctant - you have to model and slowly bring along. Maybe a 1 on 1 tutorial? Having colleagues bring them along. #PersonalizedPD
A2: Finding something that makes those w/o growth mindset tick. Using that as a launch pad into a new adventure for them. These people need a lot of hand-holding though. #personalizedPD
A4: What I have found is the shift cannot happen until a district is willing to admit that their current form of traditional PD is not working. #personalizedPD#ProDriven
I've gotten the best ideas and inspiration to grow from the #personalizedPD chat. Twitter has been key for my PLN. Thanks to @MrsStephenson3 for introducing me!

A4: A great way that I've see a lot of campuses give choice is through campus book study groups...also conducting an interest survey of Ts to determine what they want #personalizedPD
A4: To get your district or school started with #personalizedPD learn on your own, connect w/ others, show the impact, growth, & benefit to your Ss. "We did THIS because I learned with THEM." Then build. #personalizedPD
A4 Seek opportunities for yourself, share what you find, invite colleagues to join, so many ways, Twitter, webinars, books, #edcamp book studies, #personalizedpd
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
Who, who, whooooo is hiding in the back? Feel free to come out and let us know your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool!
#OwlTeach
A4: Teachers value what their admin value. If you can get your admin to buy into this concept and be open minded to it, the possibilities are endless. #personalizedPD
Yes. Big focus strands like Growth Mindset, Innovative Teaching Practices, Leadership, at the top of the column & then suggested books down each column. Plus a column for the mermaids that don't fit into any of those categories #bookcamppd#personalizedPD
A5: When I wish to turn a weakness into a strength, I rely on my PLN for more info and reflection. Every time a weakness becomes a strength, my learners benefit. #personalizedPD
A5 Reading books I learn about on Twitter from my PLN. It lets me digest at my own pace. I then try to share that learning in some form with our Ts #personalizedPD
A5: WOW! Great question. It has to be that we all learn from each other as part of #personalizedPD While it may be personalized, we don’t go it alone on this journey. https://t.co/6fRJM3oSXU
A5) My hope is that when teachers set out to grow, it is modeled for students who then emulate that behavior. Learn, try, fail, try again, keep trying learn some more, reflect ... BAM, now you have growth. #personalizedPD
A5: Application is the biggest component of my #personalizedPD I can got to conferences, twitter chats, voxer groups, & Bubba Gump restaurant to get ideas. What's important is what I take away & use to improve learning for my Ss. #personalizedPD
A5: #personalizedPD has completely changed my classroom. It has revitalized my career and given me back my enthusiasm! Best way to combat bitterness and complacency = growth through #personalizedPD
A5 No judgement. I never think twice about asking a question or talking through mistakes....easily transferred this model & these feelings to the teachers & students I support. #personalizedPD
A5: My biggest PLN and form of #personalizedpd is #podcasts. I listen to podcasts to and from work and learn what I want, when I want. Anytime teachers are inspired, student gains increase. If you're interested in one, check out my podcast, https://t.co/oNsMWo8mdP
Great point. Makes me wonder if we talk about our own learning as educators as much as we should? When is the last time we told students about why, what, and how we learned something? #personalizedPD
A6: While I was in the classroom, best idea I got from Twitter was getting rid of my desk. Made me more check in with Ss more, which led to more individualized teaching. #personalizedPD
A6: Branched out this yr and created choice board for Ts, facilitating opportunities for more Ts to present to ea other, encouraging Ts to get in ea others classrooms #personalizedPD
They “why” is so important. It’s great when Ss learn that their Ts WANT to learn new things, and that they will be learning their entire lives #PersonalizedPD
Thanks Megan. You should give Game of Stories a try. It is way cool. Plus lots of fun & provides unique learning opportunities for staff! Here's a couple cards to get you started...

A6 I have utilized my PLN by learning from amazing Physical Education and Math Ts online and then sharing those ideas with Ts in person during #patioPD and #firesidePD#personalizedPD
A6: I love bouncing ideas off of others and getting input. #PBL has been my biggest change this year. Got a cool one on the horizon for World Geography by teaming up with the city. Can't wait. #personalizedPD
A5 Biggest component of my PLN is the relationships I have built. I like meeting w/all of you each week. It keeps me going knowing there are amazing educators pushing education forward!
Helps my Ss bec I talk about working w/others in & outside of our class.

LAST Q for tonight: Q7: Reflection is one of the key factors to both personal and professional growth. How often and by what means do you reflect? #personalizedPD?
What's up Marshall? Our podcast recording on #edtechbites got some great hits the past couple of days. Thanks again for connecting with me to make it happen! #PersonalizedPD
LAST Q for tonight: Q7: Reflection is one of the key factors to both personal and professional growth. How often and by what means do you reflect? #personalizedPD?
A7: Our Ts are asked to reflect after ea PD, #personalizedPD or traditional, also creating a self-reflection for our Ts presenters, and a midyear reflection form which looks at goal setting
A7) Reflection is something I hope to be more intentional about this year. Going to get the blog back up and running. I also think reflecting with colleagues is valuable as well. Can be hard to be that vulnerable though. #personalizedPD
A7: I had the opportunity to read a co-Ts blog @abigail_crane and reflection. It. Was. Awesome. Inspired me to try blogging as well. #OwlTeach#personalizedPD
A7 I reflect hourly, on the fly. I try to read each hr I teach & see how it is working or not. I often don't write it down, just think about & remember for next time. If it's a bigger idea, I update my year-long Excel lesson instantly.
