December 6, 2017 Moving the Rock Seven Levers WE can press to Transform Education Welcome Grant Lichtman, author of Moving the Rock https://t.co/aItISTom8r
Q1: Push your horizons, what is ONE BIG, DRAMATIC, INEVITABLE change that you foresee in our schools in the next 15 years? Are we prepared for this change? #SuptChat
A1: In 2032 schools simply cannot look the same as they do today and remain relevant.
The idea that time is fixed and learning is variable will be flipped to learning being non-negotiable and time being variable
#suptchat
A1. Foresee the decreasing number of public schools and decreasing budgets due to increasing alternative education options. It will be too difficult for some districts to sustain themselves. #suptchat
Todd Koehl, Superintendent of Troy 30-C, William Faulkner
A1: grade level structure will give way to goal centered, competency standards based learning
#SuptChat
A1. Co-chaired Mo committee on success ready graduate. Employers now asking for communication, problem solving, empathy for their fellow worker. No mention of the Rs! It is what you do with knowledge and how you interact with others. That will continue to grow! #suptchat
The school year will not be defined in a 9 month stretch. Semester, quarters, or trimesters will no longer exist only skills and measurement of meaningful learning over a continuum of time. #suptchat
A1. Assessment of learning will continue to shift. Standardized testing will shift towards a collective body of evidence and PBL as opposed to current format #suptchat
A1:
Tech. With all of the tech tools currently available, its hard to foresee exactly how tech will change classroom instruction, but it certainly will! #suptchat
A1: Schools will need to become much better at marketing ourselves and telling our positive stories. That is already needed but the need will only increase with rise of competing forces. #suptchat
A1: Virtual Reality instruction. Our military has trained the best for years, as the price point to implement it lowers...it will come quickly. #suptchat
A1: Free, openly-licensed curricula will replace curriculum from traditional providers in the next 5 years. (It’s happening already!)
#suptchat
Deets:
https://t.co/3dDjS5sSl0
A2: People think it starts with telling your story and branding (both important) - but it starts with making sure you have a product worth promoting. #suptchat
A2- Working to suspend what we have always known and working with stakeholders to redefine what we offer and how we offer the curriculum to families #SuptChat
#suptchat - we're only two questions and 10 minutes in with 13 US states represented - WOW! Thanks for joining @npolyak me and our special guest and friend @GrantLichtman
A2: In #sd113a, we are telling our story through highlighting our amazing Ss, staff, and community- that is creating a high demand and we are seeing increasing enrollment #suptchat
A1: even more collaboration & partnership between community, business, & families as we all work towards sustainability & adaptability in the 21st Century. #suptchat
Q2. Creating opportunities for all that once where for a few. Student experience is paramount to learning how to be a productive employee & community member. Equity, Access, Exposure, #suptchat
A2: People think it starts with telling your story and branding (both important) - but it starts with making sure you have a product worth promoting. #suptchat
A2- Expansion of opportunities. Ideas are always being generated on how to best cater to our current population and how to best serve future generations. #suptchat
A2: Our families deserve to know that their children are our priority & that our focus is on meaningful/sound instruction that gives every learner an entry point regardless of readiness levels. It’s not about stuff- it’s about learning & relationships! #suptchat
As it should be - 27 year olds don't only talk with 27 year olds. Educating for the industrial age in a technology based society is foolhardy. #suptchat
Smaller class sizes, personal learning time, many student activities, building good relationships with families, good progress communication, great school district, super teachers #SuptChat
A2. Building the professional capacity of all staff. Then empowering them to take risks and think out of the box. That is when creativity and real innovation begins. Can’t find that in every school. Finally, celebrate and promote everything! #suptchat
A2: Control the narrative and tell the story. We are consumer based society and we must recognize the need to compete for a parents most prized possession. #suptchat
A2: So much of it is about connections and relationships-students, families, community members, businesses, higher ed & more...it's starting there and working together on what the needs of your stakeholders are. Then, it's all about making it happen! #suptchat
A:2 We are taking baby steps currently in Ellensburg, I look forward to partnering with the community to take leaps and to dare to be visionary instead of reactionary. #suptchat
Learning in schools looks so different than when I was a kid in the 70s/80s. Change is happening and continues to happen. Celebrate the evolution and foster the continuation of that evolution #suptchat
A2: People think it starts with telling your story and branding (both important) - but it starts with making sure you have a product worth promoting. #suptchat
Q3: Schools are busting the boundary between school and the world. How is your school learning in and with people and partners in your community? What exemplar programs/schools can you share? #SuptChat
Learning is a social construct that affects permanent change in people. Learning needs to be owned & driven by the learners - both student and adult learners! I think those concepts are critical to the sustainability of any learning organizations! #suptchat
Couldn't agree more! Many opportunities to make this happen if we just determine it IS a priority! Leaders like those on this chat are paving the way. #suptchat
In the next 15 years I see education evolving to the point that traditional classrooms are transitioned to individualized learning platforms. Through the use of technology students will have opportunities to learn in context to their perspective future occupations.#suptchat
Grant, Pam is a leader among leaders! Her messages and her methods are models for us all. @npolyak and @MCUSDSupe are so grateful to Pam for writing the forward to our upcoming book https://t.co/rbEcVloCei#suptchat
A2 - Ask questions of students and parents to guide this work. Schools and School Districts are notoriously ego centric because they can be. Would we go about this business the same way if it wasn't mandatory? #suptchat
I agree - when a charter school shows up in my community, I want my students and parents to love #leydenpride so much, leaving isn't an option. #suptchat
A3. Our @IowaBIGNorth program has been a great opportunity for students in our 4-district consortium to work with businesses on real-world problems, benefitting both students AND businesses. #Suptchat
A3- CTE has captured the heart and interest of a number of our students specifically in technology and agriculture. Quality teachers reinforce the importance and application of these programs. Passionate students can translate to productive adults! #suptchat
A3. 1 of 2. Community members joining our Lunch Buddy program. Partner with a young child who may have a set mindset based on their name / family. build a relationship with a successful engineer, doc, etc. Connecting dots...opening up mindsets. #suptchat
A3: Developing Interact clubs in cooperation with @Rotary helps connect middle and high school students with the ideal of local and international service #suptchat
And how can we start to break down our egos in order to offer the best for our stakeholders! would love to see what we could we do if we had to compete!! #SuptChat
@IowaBIG is KILLING it in community partner learning and I still kick myself for not including them in the book. My bad! #suptchat But now recommending all schools connect with them.
A3. Our @IowaBIGNorth program has been a great opportunity for students in our 4-district consortium to work with businesses on real-world problems, benefitting both students AND businesses. #Suptchat
A3: We implemented a model process for strategic planning that includes all stakeholders and produced a nimble plan that evolves to meet our unique needs. #suptchat
A3) I think the @AASAHQ Digitial Consortium has been paramount in showing what schools around the country can do to get our students ready for the future! #suptchat
A3. 2of2. Partner w community employers-identify Wright City Profile of a graduate..skills that are needed in all professions. Now building experiences with students at all levels to learn and show proficiency. PBL. Community to score kids on employability via feedback! #suptchat
A:3 Our district has some powerful connections with our local University. Central Washington University is a great partner and champion for education.#suptchat
Q3: Schools are busting the boundary between school and the world. How is your school learning in and with people and partners in your community? What exemplar programs/schools can you share? #SuptChat
The best part of my work is watching as staff make amazing learning happen for kids - yesterday spent time w kids learning through kinesthetic computational thinking #suptchat
In reply to
@GrantLichtman, @mikelubelfeld, @npolyak
@IowaBIG is KILLING it in community partner learning and I still kick myself for not including them in the book. My bad! #suptchat But now recommending all schools connect with them.

A3: Developing Interact clubs in cooperation with @Rotary helps connect middle and high school students with the ideal of local and international service #suptchat
A3 Create common experiences that students, staff, and families can discuss, ponder, and grow ideas with. A community book study is a beautiful way to foster a non place, non time based learning experience. #suptchat
A3) I’m also a fan of free money. I picked up a series of $100,000 EmpowerED grants from @TMobile that went right to providing devices *AND* WiFi in student homes! #suptchat
A3: In @nccusd, we are thankful for the many foundations and community partners that support us in many areas (curriculum, after school programming, PD, and many more). #suptchat
A3. Our @IowaBIGNorth program has been a great opportunity for students in our 4-district consortium to work with businesses on real-world problems, benefitting both students AND businesses. #Suptchat
We also have a tiny house project that crosses at least 7 departments in our HS AND pulls in business partners. Great stuff happening in the @CharlesCityCSD#suptchat
A2: Districts that work together and create a culture of teamwork among the schools within a district is part of offering what is best for our students. #suptchat
A3: we are also developing our Interact club in conjunction with Rotary. Kids are so compassionate in developing service projects and helping others. #suptchat
Let's see our communities as places of learning, not just for field trips. So many amazing resources if we rethink how learning might take place #suptchat
A3: We have a great bilingual parent program, Watchdogs bring a lot of our dads into the schools, our service class extends student service into the community #SuptChat
Absolutely! These real world and important connections are powerful. It's amazing how many students who join these groups become so engaged not only while in school, but far beyond. #SuptChat
A3: CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities) programs in many areas of IL and expanding in the mid-west are excellent! Students from multiple schools in class together who work with business mentors, business partners. 1/2 @CEOMidland@craiglindvahl#suptchat
A3) If you ever want to see how powerful and effective a business/school partnership can be, hit up @npolyak - hands down, #leydenpride set the bar. #suptchat
A4: Schools have to be viewed as communities...our Ss have a voice into important decisions at OQMS...and our #sd113a staff values importance of community. #suptchat
#suptchat one of the huge benefits of the chat is connecting with each other - old friends, new friends, be sure to follow one another and learn with each other!
A4: The world of human interaction is dramatically changing; knowledge is a flow more than a commodity; those who "flow" will be more relevant than those who "hold" and sell #suptchat
A3: Students in CEO have a facilitator, never meet inside a school, write business plans, run a class business, and their own business. Real money and real success/ failure. 2/2 @CEOMidland@craiglindvahl#suptchat
A4: some of our 5th grade students made a prosthetic hand on a 3D printer for a younger student in our district..an amazing contribution to the community that made another student’s life better. #suptchat
A4: Schools have to be viewed as communities...our Ss have a voice into important decisions at OQMS...and our #sd113a staff values importance of community. #suptchat
A:4 We have just to a 1:1 device approach in our district. We are working to become more creative and innovative as it becomes more a part of our daily life. #suptchat
A4- @johnnygraf88 has started a student interest survey to see what problems they want to solve, what their stressors are, and how to contribute to society! #GOAT#suptchat
A3: constant conversation with your mayor(s), universities, business community, on where we can align to do work together to support students & the future of the community. How & where the strategic goals & plans align is always a great starting question. #suptchat
If you want your T's and S's to connect in really authentic learning, you might want to check out our free SandBox events: https://t.co/9LkU3gaXHx#suptchat
A4: Troy 30-C has used Skype to talk to students, authors, scientists. The activities created new knowledge for our students and the participants, #SuptChat
A3 our community schools program widely deepens our impact out side of the school day and supports families who are Ss first teachers. Adult ESL, health, fitness, tax prep, community food pantry, family services etc. #suptchat
Agreed! Our Ss have found their voice from the confines of school to have a broader community and world impact...check us out at #sd113a and connect with @OQMSMRB#suptchat
A4: Schools have to be viewed as communities...our Ss have a voice into important decisions at OQMS...and our #sd113a staff values importance of community. #suptchat
A4. Not technologically done, but our HS kids use TUF program to teach young kids about empathy for their fellow students. They are going in and reading. They are going in and supporting. Connections and teaching each other make for strong community. #suptchat
Q5: Are we starting to measure what we value most in terms of student achievement? Are college admissions starting to value non-cognitive measures of student success? What examples can you share? #SuptChat
Hi Lindsey! We had the same project here only we had HS students make one for a 1st grader. We had seniors volunteer to come in after graduation to finish out the project. That is meaningful learning! #suptchat
A5: Infancy stages as an industry. Gallop data indicates colleges are getting there, but minority parents place a big emphasis on test scores. #suptchat
A5- I think we are valuing more, but I don't see us measuring it in ways that matter or make a difference for the future of kids... would love to see that in action!
#SuptChat
Our kids - wee ones - connect through design work, virtually through International portals, and social good projects that benefit Community 1/2 #suptchat
A4. Not technologically done, but our HS kids use TUF program to teach young kids about empathy for their fellow students. They are going in and reading. They are going in and supporting. Connections and teaching each other make for strong community. #suptchat
a5 - I believe that we are thoroughly disconnected with what matters most in regard to student achievement. Students, staff, and families are frustrated because our work is incongruent with our reality. #suptchat
A5: As a member of @RotaryLHG we are looking at service, leadership and how Ss take initiative to make an impact on the world...some institutions are getting there, but we are not where we need to be in this area...yet. #suptchat
A5- YES! Too much emphasis on the outcome instead of the process! The questions that are being asked are: What is your GPA? What was your SAT Score? Somebody not involved with the day to day in schools making the decisions on what is "important." #suptchat
There is no singular measure that quantifies the value of a school system or the ability of a child. The issue is one measure is cheap and logistically sound.
Do schools *at all levels* care enough to change? #suptchat
A5. World and education institutions are increasingly embracing that academics are necessary, but not sufficient. All 6-12 Wright City students are taking the Kolbe A (or Y) to see how they work best if given choice/care. Learn how that flavors how they learn / interact #suptchat
A4 love how one of our ELL Ts is connecting community in this building bridges by breaking bread cooking schl project - mother/daughter lessons in native foods like Afghani recipes here https://t.co/Etbn8UPWYD#suptchat
There are a lot of great conversations, ideas & educators on Twitter every day. Here's a link for the schedule of chats - I already set it to PST for you. #suptchathttps://t.co/JfKnjwydyF
Am predicting that 10 years from now many colleges will be accepting a new form of transcript that measures what we actually value. https://t.co/lZxmNa69bb#suptchat
A5: I think this is a question to ask of our college administrators. We need to collaborate with these professionals to work together to change the perspective that non-cognitive measures aren't important.
A5: Assessing student learning continues to become more complex. What is it that truly defines achievement for a student? Even for a Kindergarten student, this question requires multiple measures. #SuptChat
A5: One admissions counselor told my daughter they wanted to see her personality in her essay and they wanted to know about her "stickwithitness". Commitment is important. #suptchat
Am predicting that 10 years from now many colleges will be accepting a new form of transcript that measures what we actually value. https://t.co/lZxmNa69bb#suptchat
A5 we’ve gotten feedback from some highly competitive college recruiters that they are looking for passion and spark about project work - not just well-groomed resumes #suptchat
A5: This was from 2 years ago - not sure where we stand at this point, but some fine arts schools like Columbia (Chicago) wants Ss portfolios not ACT. https://t.co/one9ySugLf#suptchat
A6: Focusing on what we can control. Our growth, the growth and support of others, and the leaning of our systems. If we make these changes - it allows us to leverage other areas to continue growth #suptchat
A6- We are working to make time work for us by thinking outside of the box for how we construct our day... so excited to see what happens next!! #SuptChat
A6: We value effective communication, clear vision, initiative, passion, ambition, and creativity- none of that costs a DIME- and with that, we can move mountains for our Ss and community. #sd113a#suptchat
A6. Our staff have initiated High-Five Fridays, Flapjack Fridays, and other small but powerfully positive culture-building activities to transform the environment. #suptchat
a6 - Promote an idea. Promote kindness, promote innovation, promote environmental awareness, simply be the champion for the change you want to see. Big change has always stemmed from a single person and the passion therein. #suptchat
A6. My oldest is in a gifted program. Her class work is good, which I am glad for, but her work with 6 others on her Destination Imagination team is amazing...and will leverage her future endeavors way more. #suptchat
A6) we are embracing a collection of small changes that lead to smiles from students to Superintendents. Something as minute as allowing jeans to be worn without paying and allowing sneakers goes a long way! #suptchat
A6: We are working with our students & on ourselves to become better versions of ourselves each day and to be the difference for others. #BeTheDifference#suptchat
A6: We value effective communication, clear vision, initiative, passion, ambition, and creativity- none of that costs a DIME- and with that, we can move mountains for our Ss and community. #sd113a#suptchat
Jeff, this is another way schools will continue to evolve...one stop shop for health and hunger and hygiene needs as well as learning will only continue to blend. #suptchat
A6. My oldest is in a gifted program. Her class work is good, which I am glad for, but her work with 6 others on her Destination Imagination team is amazing...and will leverage her future endeavors way more. #suptchat
#suptchat “We can, whenever & wherever we choose, successfully teach all children whose schooling is of interest to us. We already know more than we need to do that. Whether or not we do it must finally depend on how we feel about the fact we haven’t so far.”-Ronald Edmonds
A:6 We are targeting certain students of our school that have been identified for additional attention with targeted course offerings, credit retrieval options, and. interest based advisory courses. #suptchat
#suptchat two more questions - this is an incredible chat - 17 US states and one Canadian province are actively tweeting in our trending international chat for leaders - thank you for leading, learning, and sharing!
A7: All lasting changes comes from within - we have to continue to ensure that our entire staff sees the district mission as their mission and refuse to accept the status quo. #suptchat
But why are they not included now. Seems odd that only privates & charters are part of this work. And then public schools? We are doing the heavy lifting - we should be included now #suptchat#dplis
A6: My BOE celebrates a student, a staff member, and a community member each meeting as exemplars: people associated with D13 that we should aspire to be like. #suptchat
All these great ideas and movement...but are our horizons pushed far enough? Think about the trajectory of change around us; it is both scary and exciting #suptchat
In NJ, We will have twitter chats count towards the 5 year / 100 PD hour requirement. We are working on a rubric and a common form to distribute to all. Lots ahead for the 2018-19 school year! #njed#suptchat
This is great! The more connections, the better. Love the focus on starting these clubs at a young age...as a high school, we are always eager to team up with our feeder schools to engage our students and community as early as possible. @jonbartelt#SuptChat
In reply to
@ShowMeBuck, @johnnygraf88, @jonbartelt
A7- the rocks we face are #energyvampires - which are those who wish to take the optimism, and joy from others. @JonGordon11 gives us great advice in multiple books. We are addressing these "Rocks" by our intentional effort in community involvement in our schools. #suptchat
A7: Age old barriers of time, bells, the 6 period day, standard grading scale, and the standard school year. All of which stifle continued learning and creativity with students and parents. #suptchat
so true... and the discomfort becomes the barrier so many are not willing to push past... The hard part is maintaining the commitment to excellence and to the best work we can do! #suptchat
We need to be relentless in the pursuit of providing our students with a relevant education that honors the gifts, talents and interests of each student. #suptchat
A7) In NJ, we didn’t move rocks over the past few years - we’ve moved quarries! Some state rocks that need to be moved include streamlining reporting and making data easier to read for all stakeholders. We’re on it; watch for awesomeness in 2018! #njed#suptchat
Thank you, @npolyak and @mikelubelfeld for ANOTHER fantastic, fascinating, and fun evening of #SuptChat. Thank you for your leadership in our profession.
A7. On our way, but content as the end needs to be in the past. It needs to be embedded. @pammoran said it well with 'ya but'. Let's not limit ourselves, nor our kids based on biases and nostalgia. #suptchat
Dissonance is discomforting .. creates vulnerabilities . Why learning how to proceed when you don’t know what to do is a life learning competency #suptchat#risktaking
#suptchat enters its 5th year on Jan 1 2018!
Our next chat is Jan 3 2018
THANK YOU for making this the international chat for superintendents and school leaders
@npolyak and I thank you!
A7: I appreciate Chris Gaines’ response. Our rock is universally paring down the complexity of the task to see the simplicity of teaching and learning, then prioritizing the tools and practices that maximize outcomes #SuptChat
A8- Culture builders! What has worked for others in building a positive, supportive, collaborative culture surrounding schools in a community. #suptchat
A7) In NJ, we didn’t move rocks over the past few years - we’ve moved quarries! Some state rocks that need to be moved include streamlining reporting and making data easier to read for all stakeholders. We’re on it; watch for awesomeness in 2018! #njed#suptchat
I think we all do, which is why we are going to get it done. Meeting the the stakeholders of 591 districts, on their levels, won’t be easy, but it’s necessary in today’s times. We will get it done! -je #suptchat#njed#m18
A8: Authentic assessment, community engagement, state assessments that work, how to cultivate leadership in our schools, ways we "make it fun" #suptchat
Join us in Sandbox format for FREE face to face video mashups on a wide range of deeper learning subjects: https://t.co/9LkU3gaXHx#suptchat It will blow your mind!
A8: competency based learning; unlearning grade levels especially K-2; teaching parents; student progress reports to parents through technology #SuptChat
Delighted to add some resources to our work from tonight’s chat and to share some too - thanks for facilitating deep convo @mikelubelfeld@GrantLichtman#suptchat
Bravo; can't wait to see and hear more. If you need more people to shout out what you are doing, let me know and I will do my best to get the word out. #suptchat
Leaders, thank you for the learning. As snow arrives in many of our parts, be careful as you drive the roads in the wee hours of the morning! #suptchat
