Welcome to tonight's #edchatie discussion.
As usual, before we begin, please introduce yourself.

Have seen ideas around using meditation (instead of detention) on twitter - tried it a little bit - as usual down to time & personnel - have not evaluated it #edchatie
Welcome to tonight's #edchatie discussion which is all about "Is there an alternative to detention in schools and what is it?" for the next hour.

Detention is a rather reactive, rather than proactive, approach. I'd favour seeking alternatives that look at the root of the behaviour. Restorative practice or perhaps meditation come to mind. #edchatie
Had a quick look through the spec. Hopefully will find a way to make PE/PE teachers kinder, especially for those whose disabilities aren't (a) diagnosed until college, and (b) aren't immediately obvious as physical e.g. autism/Aspergers, anxiety -- both have physical effects
I suppose the goal is changed behaviour through negative reinforcement. With that in mind, an alternative could be restorative practice but it requires buy in from all staff. It could be complemented by meditation and/or mindfulness.
Absolutely agree, unless restorative practice was in play at all levels of a school community it might as well not be considered. Staff buy-in and training then come into play. #edchatie
In my previous (DEIS) school where RP was thoroughly practised I saw pupils valued being genuinely listened to and it can help overcome anti-establishment feelings

I'm afraid I was a lowly NQT looking in from the outside so I had no hands-on involvement! It was called Paws and Paws.b as far as I recall though. #edchatie
Very good point! Students may need time to reflect and 'calm down' depending on the behaviour before they can effectively analyse their own behaviour. It's more about having a reasonable conversation with them, as opposed to punishing them without follow-up #edchatie
Whole school training is available. They were at Féilte two years ago. I can't remember their name now. Had a quick Google and couldn't find them. There are EPV days for primary teachers if they do a summer course in them though. #edchatie
I've had very good experiences using the 'FRIENDS for Life' programme in my current school. Very useful tool for pupils to challenge negative thoughts and view situations from different perspectives. #edchatie
#edchatie I admit I haven't done the training but I have read a fair bit, I use the principles for dealing with discipline issues as they arise. Very effective.
Another good question to ask is what the repercussion for their behaviour should be. When they say they don't deserve it, I ask them to look at it though the teachers eyes, how did it look to them? What did they see? #edchatie
I think this is the same with any school-based change of practice. While it may be started by a small team, it will need to be evaluated and if decided on to go ahead with it - then it needs whole-school buy in

My daughter works in Portland Public District (Oregon) where restorative justice has been used effectively. Annual suspensions fell by more than 100 in a year. #edchatie
I would say it is up to the individual teacher to resolve the issue with student. If there is detention with no dialogue there is no understanding #edchatie
If what they write on the sheet isn't looked at or acted on then there is no positives to be taken from it. If you read what they write and talk through the behaviour there is a better chance of improvement #edchatie
What was interesting was I explained to student who asks for so much details including showing my record if missed work etc... why they were receiving the detention. but student wrote opposite to what they agreed to when talking to me. may be just one stood out. #edchatie

Rathú runs T&L workshops for schools including Behaviour for Learning Vs. Behaviour for Compliance- What is the difference?
Detention - dialogue = compliance.
Detention + dialogue = Learning.

Reading comments on RP. While it shud be whole-school I found using it in my classroom prevented escalation to behaviour resulting in detention. @connect_rp doing great work with Irish schools (training & facilitation) #edchatie
I wonder if there is an age element. As in black and white rules better for junior cycle but as they are developing critical skills and ability to empathise etc in senior cycle that this approach is most effective

Any last thoughts, suggestions, ideas, solutions?
