Tonight's chat will focus on questions inspired by the book "Steal Like An Artist". We will be using the Q/A format. & don't forget to use #espechat in your replies!
PSA: When we reference “stealing” tonight, it means copying/remixing/reinventing things that inspire you. We learn by copying. #espechat is not advocating taking ideas and claiming them as your own (aka plagiarizing). Please give credit where it is due.
Hi @SaraWoodPE and #espechat 👋🏼! What’s good!? Stephanie Sandino from Southern California, ms #physed (grades 7/8). Hmm “A Different Way” by DJ Snake 🐍
A1: "stealing/copying" helps to improve your repitoire of lesson ideas and spark your own creativity to adapt that idea and apply it to other parts of your teaching. #espechat
I think that it is very important that we give credit to those that we "steal" from. Others have great creative gifts and it is helpful to use those but tweek them to fit my school enviroment and students. #espechat
A1: I always tell new teachers "Don't think you need to reinvent the wheel. Just put some new rims on it" We have continued to tweak things over the years to make #physed better. #espechat
A1 #borrowing great ideas from others helps us look from a different angle on how to enhance our classes and take it to the next level #NBCTstrong taught me to always consider my specific kids at this moment in what they need!!! #espechat
Q1 - it helps bc someone is always able to find a way to expand on what has been done before... just look at technology these days! Same idea with a twist over n over #espechat

A1) I think it's the idea that gets copied. I find myself changing multiple activities that I have seen to add my own little flair to the game. #espechat
A1 I see it and then my wheels turn and my mind takes over, it begins to make small tweaks here and there to make it work for me and my style! #espechat
Q2: “All creative work builds on what came before.” What experience do you have building on the work of others? Who in the #physed community have you used an idea or enhanced or built upon? #espechat
A3: Today I used "Gotcha Tag" from @terridr99 and discovery learning from @JonesWendjones . (Both presenters for #EPEW2018)
Both were the basic ideas from them but had many tweaks to meet the needs of my Ss. #espechat
Q2 - Wow, I can go on forever how helpful this community has been.. 1 thing I build on way the reaction cone came.. kids loved it. I forgot who I seen in from though 🤭. Using ideas from others..mmm EVERYDAY! Again SOOOO MANY PPL #espechat
A2: I know I check in with @pe4everykid & @physedreview often. They have shared a lot with the entire #physed community and allow other to use/tweak/and make better for the good of the cause. #espechat
A2. I student taught under Hal Cramer the author of Make It Take It and other publications. I just want to enjoy writing and growing as he did in his career. #espechat
A2b: I've seen many Ts use my games or resources & it is very encouraging & flattering & makes me want to do more - stoking the fire am I right @kniper1 ? #espechat
A2 I took some resources made for sport ed class management teams from @louloumik and @WillDavisElemPE and took it to the next level with job badges and digital reporting #googleforms#espechat
In reply to
@SaraWoodPE, @louloumik, @WillDavisElemPE
A2b thing of how often our kids build on our ideas and activities... they take things to even greater heights than we could imagine sometimes. #espechat

Q3a: Everyone has a collection of things that they’ve stolen called a “swipe file”. How do you collect or organize things for your swipe file? #espechat
A2b) It’s amazing seeing your ideas in someone’s gym. I feel validated. I also think about the changes they will make to fit their program and needs. #espechat
A2b I don’t know about you guys but I LOVE when somebody makes it better or makes improvements (and shares it back) because it’s one more thing to put in my bag-o-activities!!!! #espechat
Q3a have to admit that what I find is either in a notebook written down or thrown into a folder. Not much organization, but somehow I know where it is. #espechat
Got the idea from Tiller of having a folder system in my Google Drive for ideas (and keeping names attached for credit, don't forget this part people, lol!). #espechat
A3a) Being on the Global PE Drive is where I store everything for people to use, but for me, it is really things I use day-to-day; usually use Twitter like feed to remember things I want to do #espechat
That's why conferences are so exciting, because someone has something we can do that will add to our bag of tricks. Never done enlarging our trick bag #espechat
A3b) Try it out in class & see if it works with my Ss & what grades/classes it does or does not work with; there are games I've "stolen" that I no longer use because they don't work for what, how, and why I want to teach #espechat
A3a Agreed. Im working this year to organize all files into folders by games, units, instant activities, plagnets, etc. not only from people I see but things Ive created. I’m new to the game so I’m excited to get to a point where ppl start using my stuff and tweakin it! #espechat
A3 Google Keep is a good way of remembering tweets you found were stellar. I’m always forgetting who I saw an idea from! On @canva if I see an idea that would be perfect for a future idea I load it onto my saved graphics by clicking on the template #espechat
A3b: I typically hoard when it comes to things, but when I moved schools this past year I did a massive "What's relevent/What's not" clean out. #espechat
A3b: It goes into that folder if I have actually used it. Up until then, it is kind of just floating. I have an ideas folder then it goes to borrowed folder. #espechat
A3b: I come across great ideas, but if it doesn't work with my current situation I don't keep it. Can't keep my mind or my file system cluttered. #espechat
A3b It's impossible to try EVERYTHING, so it's important to practice restraint. When we hold back, we can see creativity come from there as well. #espechat
A3b If I get a flood of ideas right away, if it’s something I’ve always wanted to do, if it would fit perfectly into a future unit I might be doing, if it’s something I don’t know much about but need to #espechat
A4: I do both. "gotcha tag" was the activity I tweaked from @terridr99 . The discovery learning was the way the lesson was created from @JonesWendjones . It depends what I think I can use and for what. #espechat
Q4 - I copy what they do and/also the way they create what they do. Both works well for my situations. Little bit of this little bit of that and bam I have what I need #espechat difference taking the whole vs a part

#NBCTstrong process taught me it’s all about Knowledge of Students - why do these students need this at this time #cant copy directly have to take a good idea, plan, learning opportunity and adjust it to your KOS and learning outcomes for their needs #espechat
A4: I mostly try to copy the way they create what they do and tweak it to fit more my style. If it’s not me, it will feel forced and awkward. #espechat
A4 I think I do both at times, but somehow always adding “me” to the equation. Sometimes I copy activity but add on levels and sometimes I copy the way they do it (ie plagnets storage and distribution) #espechat
A4: It can often start with copying, and then figuring out how it ticks and then creating for oneself. Copying best practices makes our profession stronger. #espechat
A4: Sorry just able to get in the #espechat I have trouble taking someone's great idea and using it exactly how they do it. I have to change it (even slightly sometimes) to make it work in my own situation.
A4. If I borrow I ask permission. Most of the time I modify the activity to meet my classes needs. Give credit and ask people to share their knowledge. #espechat
A5: I tell my Ss where I got it from. I also try to thank the T I got it from. When I talk to others about it, make sure they know where I got it from as well. #espechat
A5: It's is tough from a SM sharing standpoint. It's considered best practice to share/tag the person's name you took it from, but it doesn't always happen obviously. #espechat
A4 - I absolutely love modifying #physed genious to tailor to our smSs needs and space. If I feel the activity is unworthy of change because if it’s mastery I duplicate straight up. Love giving credit where it’s due, too👊 Diving in peeps! Randy from MN, K-5 PE. #espechat
A5: It's vital to ask permission before you share someone else's work. Give credit where credit is due. If presenting I reference the author and I usually start out with the disclaimer that I've borrowed all of this from others and if you are in the room thank you! #espechat
A5 Tag whoever you got the idea from when sharing it on sm, mentioning the person of presenting it, I don’t always tell my ss but I should (I think it adds a nice little fun fact too) #espechat
Tagging is interesting though because you tag it where you got it, which if we believe everything is built on a previous then the tagging chain doesn’t end #EspeChat
Ideas can't be copyrighted but materials copied exactly as distributed do have copyright status. Ideas should however be credited to the originator to the best of someone's ability. Sometimes ideas have been passed down for years so that makes it hard sometimes! #espechat
This is a good question, I think if you are using an idea in a presentation make sure it’s okay with the creator to share their stuff and ask how they would like you to give credit if let’s say you’re adding it to the participant folder #espechat
A5 - love tagging those that deserve it on SM. Been talking more about my “twitter friends” who SHARE to make us and others better. They truly have ah-ha moment looks on their faces when we do. Especially if my twitter friends live across the globe! #espechat
A6 It’s awesome to share the dots but once they begin to connect there’s no room for the idea to grow upon. The dots should disperse and multiply. Become more dots which represents different variations which means even MORE IDEAS! That’s what we want—#physed to grow #espechat
A6 is this the idea that people can’t be giving a fixed curriculum? That the gaps are their to tailor and create for your students? #InnerArtist#espechat

Q7: Side projects and hobbies are great ways to find creative inspiration. What do you do outside of work/PE? How do you or could you steal ideas from those and it feed into your work? #espechat
A6 I think it’s important that not only do we encourage deeper thinking with our students, but with each other as well. If we give each other the answers it disrupts the discovery and learning process it takes to get to the conclusion. #espechat

A7) I like to do a lot of handyman things (although many times it doesn't go as well as I hoped) & I use many game ideas to use some handyman ideas, such as creating an orienteering course #espechat
I had a random side project idea to start a Twitter chat a few years ago for elementary school #physed teachers... what a silly idea that was #espechat

A7: My hobbies are taking care of a 3 and 5 year old right now, haha. I actually enjoy creating new PE activities and resources. It calms me. #espechat
A6: 1. Take what you learn from others and make it your own! 2. Become good at organizing what you see and hear 3. If you have the chance to give someone credit for originating an idea or inspiring yours... do it 4. Be brave, try new things and become an originator! #espechat
A7: I ride horses. I am constantly taking what I learn from the horses and using that in my lessons. For example, when I was working on cantering in a group and used that to make a game with my Ks about safe space while moving #espechat
A7) Hobbies also include marathon/half marathon running, playing sports, reading, playing music, etc. All things that I can and could bring into my PE classes #espechat
A7: I am a huge pinterester and I get a ton of new and out of the box ideas there. I spend a lot of time with my family and within the community to better understand my students where I can come up with new ideas. #espechat@StephDeLuca16
A8 I think we've definitely shown that you can find a few ideas from trusted colleagues and put your own spin on it, your creativity can grow from those ideas. #espechat
A7 Its really hard to think outside of #physed when it comes to projects. However, the first thing that comes to mind is self-care and getting different ideas to move as well as the different places to move in! Get some creative juices/ideas from @ugmonk#espechat
