A1 Bringing the joy to the lesson brings engagement. Students will learn more with a pos emotional connection.
so tempting!!!! Not much I need with it...hmmmm...
Glad I’m not the only one!
A1 If it doesn't spark joy or intrigue or wonder or fear or some emotion, the lesson would have no impact. https://t.co/oL6u9OYTui
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
I heard this was the place to be on monday nights!
A1 Umm - does this boring lesson spark joy? nope trash it. How about this one? oh yeah - keeper!
I only missed a few...I managed to time at the same time as dinner tonight...hopefully I can keep up!
A1 It forces you to be relevant with your Ss. Find their joy! Also allows for heart teaching not just cognition.
Hi from SA, TX! Academic Tech Coach
Julie from Texas! Been away from but ready to get going again!
Julie from Texas! Been away from but ready to get going again!
A1. Think about the PD you sit through. Imagine if items in PD asked same Qs. How different would it look?
Hi! BOnnie from Pennsy. MS librarian.
A1: Tremendous value is asking it about each lesson but also each item, tool in your room. Every little bit of joy counts.
Welcome! is a great chat to start with.
A1. If lessons are joyful and engaging, it will impact ss.
You picked a great one to start with!
Tom Loud, 1st grade teacher in Tennessee!
And is awesome! Hang on tight!
Miranda from TN, 3rd grade, I like to say I'm a "big picture person"... Code for NOTHING is organized in my world
A1: Rephrase for class. "does this lesson mean something important to my Ss?"
Kristin here! I live for organization, but my desk already has a pile that needs work!
Ohhhh, that’s where this is going. Listened to her audiobook about a month ago. Lots of work to do! Clothes @ fall break!
A1 Tidy up your teaching, by using the good stuff, the meaningful stuff...create a spark!
A1: Joy means engagement; more connection and relevance
Michele from Gulf Shores Elementary School GS, AL
A1: Does this piece invite questions, thinking, PBL, innovation? Nope, out.
A1: influence the relevance of the lesson. Make it real-world to kids https://t.co/O8D9vvrc7z
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
A1: When you teach with joy, your Ss feel it and it brings them joy. We want them to know that learning is amazing
You should have seen the mountain in my living room after my wife read this. living the dream..
The clothes thing will STUN you!! The bags that left our house...wow! Embarrassing!
Well stated. Relevant to Ss is important!
A1 Great question, lesson must give you joy! If you don't love it, how will they?
A1: Need to make sure it’s meaningful and connects on emotional level.
A1: lesson should bring joy - or wonder, or disagreement, or spark new ideas... there should be some reaction!
A1 If you aren't brining joy into your lesson plans do you expect your students to have a good time? Joy is key to a quality lesson
A1: If Ss aren't engaged, they are going to forget most of what happened in class that day
A1) That's a great way to think about lessons. Give the kids a spark and ignite their desire to learn.
more Passion - and we tend to put more into those lessons the true lessons come to life!
Hi, y'all. Melissa from Mississippi here. Instructional tech. Just getting in from girls' softball practice.
I’ll probably be too embarrassed to take before & after pictures.
Hello! Bronwyn from CT! 7th and 8th grade ELA. Passionate about teaching and anything related!
Hello! Bronwyn from CT! 7th and 8th grade ELA. Passionate about teaching and anything related!
A1: Take out all old files and activities and ask, "does this still apply to learning today?" if not... it's out
A1: Ss should feel joy when being in my class. Am I that object that could be discarded because I don't bring joy? I need to bring it!
A1: If I am teaching something that doesn't bring me joy, it sure makes it hard to sell tickets to! https://t.co/4Pw3DDjmXs
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
Hi I'll jump in later... putting 6-month old to bed!!
A1. Ss will tell you when they are bored.
A1: doing what you love and with joy transfers that energy to your Ss
Love this! Sometimes we preach 1 thing but practice another. https://t.co/fRbXTy9Uur
A1. Think about the PD you sit through. Imagine if items in PD asked same Qs. How different would it look?
A1: increased student engagement AND happiness. Happiness increases student achievement.
A1: If a lesson does not create, "joy" or excitement then Ss won't have desire to extend learning beyond the classroom
A1: No spark of joy for you then no sparks for students & they are why we are here!
nope. there's a blog post in there somewhere
Absolutely. My colleague could hear MY passion and joy for my lesson today. My Ss were riveted to the topic!
A1-If only the great lessons are saved, students & teachers are engaged & improving! School should be fun! https://t.co/gfr0uSWUPm
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
The chat just started! You will love it! Jump in!
A1: If we did this, we would have some of the most authentically engaged Ss and excited Ts ever! https://t.co/YrWt2zjVnD
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
A1 Lessons that bring joy make learning STICK. We can always work on making lessons more engaging & relevant! https://t.co/MpMdeCwlDN
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
A1. I think it's important to remember that Joy isn't the same as happiness and enjoyment, but about being confident & focused.
Every lesson should be a catalyst for something wonderfully JOYfilled, because https://t.co/8qc5zCF62X
A1: lesson should bring joy - or wonder, or disagreement, or spark new ideas... there should be some reaction!
A1: Cultivating the joy of natural curiosity in lessons creates culture of lifelong learning.
A1: The impact=immense. HW this week is to sketch observations for 30 min.=to create original poem on Fri./Ss intrigued.
Threw out an entire file cabinet last week. Didn't even look first!
A1 I have a sign in lights as you come spelling JOY. We light it when we find the JOY in learning! Love when I need new batteries.
A1B: Need to make sure Ss still love learning and school beyond the elementary level
A1: will Ss enjoy the process of learning about it? Is there room for S interest? Is the focus on the learning and not the material?
A1 Impact is Ts would focus lessons on Ss interests, needs, engage them, challenge Ss, meaningful and authentic
no they won't - they'll just start finding more engaging things to do, like cut up erasers, talk to friends ...
I’m resisting. We’ll see.
Right! Its hard, but essential, to call up that spark, for our ss. If I can't bring it, why should they?
Love this! Extending beyond the classroom is KEY! https://t.co/3KZdgtA0Jl
A1: If a lesson does not create, "joy" or excitement then Ss won't have desire to extend learning beyond the classroom
And you can definitely feel it, it is
A1: It goes the Ask/Analyze when creating a lesson. Would you want to be in your own classroom? Would you want your kids in there?
A1.2: if my Ss are engaged and excited, so am I! I'm in excited and engaged, so are my Ss! We need to work together! Live the joy!
A1. Joy is found when we make instructional decisions based on what kids need and deserve.
Yes! Ruthless and relentless pursuit of AWESOME!
A1 if there is joy, then there is happiness. If a student is feeling this then I am doing the right thing
A1 Ts should be over joyed with every lesson they subject Ss to. Watch Ss get excited for your class. https://t.co/65gNvdI9zW
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
I check whenever I have enough time to dedicate to emails, so 5-10 mins. Before, maybe during class, lunch, after, evening
A1: Asking urself if it will spark joy is brilliant bc u can bring in play, inquiry, u set a tone for learning https://t.co/SdagDbGBm2
Jumping in now! AR teacher of the year, Literacy teacher, & biggest cheerleader you will ever meet! Ready to be inspired by you all
I like the question, would my students be here if they didn't have to be? Rocked my world when I read tha.
Q2 It can be so exhilarating to add "new" to our classes but time, like space, is finite. What could you ELIMINATE from what you do?
It makes a huge difference when you use that as the bar that is set https://t.co/jGqBeCwaYP
I like the question, would my students be here if they didn't have to be? Rocked my world when I read tha.
Yes! Would kids be willing to pay to get into our class? If not, then we need to reasses. https://t.co/En3jFgJ084
A1: It goes the Ask/Analyze when creating a lesson. Would you want to be in your own classroom? Would you want your kids in there?
Love but might do it until next year at my new school.
Wow, so piratey of you! https://t.co/s3cmThwMhr
Threw out an entire file cabinet last week. Didn't even look first!
A1 T would be teaching lessons they are our passionate about allowing 4 meaningful learning opportunities https://t.co/wNKpcB0W2w
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
a2 worksheets, eliminated, reading textbooks for textbook-sake, gone!
A1 I try and ask myself, "Will my Ss talk about what they did on the bus or at home today." Part of the goal
We would love to Skype one of our book club meetings with author . is helping us all https://t.co/GbBBttHNY1
Excellent!! We need to set up a GHO or Skype for one of the meetings!
A2: Eliminate excess content; "teach" fewer examples to give more time to Ss to explore and investigate their questions
A1: Such an important consideration! We pour too much of ourselves into this job to do it for any reason but to inspire joy!
Yes! I ❤️ the fire! Be alive!
A2 grades - dump grades - offer feedback, growth opportunities, creation, challenge, excitement, but drop grades
Thanks! It nudges my Littles to find joy and me to work at creating a context for it!
A2: I've cut out "review days" and replaced with "Reflect/Revise" days after assessments. Much More learning there
A2 We can eliminate when we INTEGRATE learning experiences together. https://t.co/3hOD6rv5OH
Q2 It can be so exhilarating to add "new" to our classes but time, like space, is finite. What could you ELIMINATE from what you do?
Yes, very yes. Long way to go before my school would consider that.
A2 drop memorization & go for proof of concept & problem solving
A2 I hate spelling tests. I would abandon that ship if I could.
A1 I do each lesson w/ students- a great way to ensure that lessons are filled with joyful authentic learning! https://t.co/reFnYKOMV1
A2. I would like to eliminate grading lol
A2: Eliminate the give and get and let the Ss be in charge of their own learning. Eliminate questions that can be googled.
More impact and relevance for Ss too with this idea; I like it!
Already have my plan - setting up as I tweet tonight - Make your Mark everyone! opps, and total engagement
YES! https://t.co/eNtMfwMduV
A2: simply covering the content because the pacing guide said so! Assess, reteach, & enrich instead.
A1. I like lessons that challenge, make Ss think about the world, and allow us to make memories as a class family
A2 As a future educator I think getting rid of unnecessary paper would be beneficial to both students and teachers
A1 Joy is an emotion of the heart. When a lesson makes its way into a child's mind, through the heart, the learning is for life!
A2: WORKSHEETS!!!! 😝 https://t.co/0zQzEnIsBW
Q2 It can be so exhilarating to add "new" to our classes but time, like space, is finite. What could you ELIMINATE from what you do?
A2. We have to become aggressive about eliminating whole group instruction. This practice meets the needs of no one.
A2 Minimize transition times, maximize engagement! The more engaged the less time lost to management.
Would love to eliminate time wasting standardized testing
I like this, Rich!! https://t.co/JpKy4bFLXE
A1 I try and ask myself, "Will my Ss talk about what they did on the bus or at home today." Part of the goal
A2) Love applying this idea to our work. I would also ask - Does it have a purpose? https://t.co/0qNS77LbK4
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
A2: I eliminated most direct instruction, and instead do an in-class flip model. Ss rotate through stations. I’m free to help Ss
A2: things that can be accomplished in another way (ex. Info items go to a Google Classroom). Less T talk, more S "do" time.
A2: Focus on the list of 6 things and/or use a improtance/urgency chart if you're a little "squirrel" like...
just start small! Read (or watch) The Dot, have Ss make dots!
A2. Anything that doesn't impact S growth
A2 the meaningless prepackaged busy work curriculum...I HATE it...but sometimes feel pressured to include it.
a2: taking time minutes to make groups or partners. should take seconds not minutes
I have those JOY lightbulb letters, too, for lightbulb moments. Makes the Ss smile and adds a nice spark to the room.
long way to go before almost all schools consider it - needs to start from the top in higher ed, right?
If only there were infinite time to do both for as long as Ss needed! I agree: less "teach me" review, more reflection.
A2: Eliminate assessments that don't provide Ss choice in how they demonstrate understanding
Remember to thank it for its service & use when you toss!
A2 Our instructional guides pace us, yet my team gets rid of the items we can in order to enrich lessons with https://t.co/mD8ZWNRXVw
Q2 It can be so exhilarating to add "new" to our classes but time, like space, is finite. What could you ELIMINATE from what you do?
A2 Once you add NEW it's easy to see what's old and what must go. In teaching, change is good, so good.
A2. I would also like to eliminate ss note taking...but it's beneficial.
A2: our son is working on word wall words & created this video on his son for teachers: https://t.co/vVQyX0ZxKb Design your own exp.
A1: as adults we want to do things we enjoy. The same goes for Ss. We want them to find joy in learning https://t.co/pvc2UVcc5z
Q1 In Kondo's Tidying Up book she has u ask of EACH item, "Does this spark joy?" What would be the impact of doing that w/each lesson?
A2 eliminate the interruptions, Come on! Can't you see We are busy Learning!
Don't have to do everything at once. Takes time to replace the pre-packaged bits with quality learning!
A1 How much joy we talking, 50/50, 60/40? What sort of joyful experience? I don’t know about Tidying Up. Sounds like I might want to.
A2: I'd love to eliminate paperwork from my life. It is a necessary drudgery.
rinse and repeat is not needed in class 😜 get involved in putting the learning in the hands of the Ss
A2. We also have stop placing students in classrooms based on their birthdate and begin grouping them by their readiness.
A2 Answering questions at end of chapter...gone
Use and other things where you can
Yesss! https://t.co/RPPcsesCEP
rinse and repeat is not needed in class 😜 get involved in putting the learning in the hands of the Ss
I'm so sad that I can only hit retweet once. Love this https://t.co/nmI3YHvBUC
A2 drop memorization & go for proof of concept & problem solving
A2: Please let's not meet for the sake of meeting. We can eliminate meetings without a purpose. https://t.co/2M9YJKf9hc
Hi ! Academic librarian transitioning to school libraries. Happy to be here!
The bottom line is Ss need the creative arts learn how to think outside the box. Innovation. Think differently. It's our job to allow.
Maybe, but also grassroots. Right now, parents would freak out if I dropped grades.
A2: Get rid of the "I can'ts" and bring in the "I cans" "Difficult doesn't mean impossible." -Karla Proper
A2) I have the advantage of a short teaching cycle (10-20 days) so I get to iterate my lessons ALOT! I reduce, reuse, and recycle:-)
A2. Hi everybody! Eliminate = whoa, this is a hard one. Less units? Slow it down and more play. https://t.co/YP4YDnCuiL
Q2 It can be so exhilarating to add "new" to our classes but time, like space, is finite. What could you ELIMINATE from what you do?
Sometimes the daily routines become such ingrained habits that we don't realize how much time we spend on irrelevant activities.
I cut spelling tests, vocab work unrelated to content, & grammar in insolation. Everything embedded- & they retain more!
but most important part, 'Please ... sign it!"
A2: I'd love to eliminate ego. I would love for ed to be less of competition and more of a collaboration!
Hi, Laura!! Thanks for being here!!
A2: repeating content...so much overlapping. Condense material & teach Ss...teach application to life! Create learners, not repeaters!
A2 Probably by asking what it is I do that takes me away from design/assessment/students? For me that’s mostly the admin stuff.
A2 Eliminate any "reading activity" that takes away from actual reading time.
A2: Eliminating "busy work" is a big thing for me. If it's worth the time, I take the time to do it well. https://t.co/PcOw9FmJxO
Q2 It can be so exhilarating to add "new" to our classes but time, like space, is finite. What could you ELIMINATE from what you do?
A2 I'm a dreamer. I'd eliminate walls & schedules. I'd also eliminate testing. I'd eliminate archaic grading practices & short recess!
A2: One thing I'm trying to eliminate in my classroom is so much of me talking! I want the Ss talking.
"hey siri, how do you spell pirate?”
Way to stir it up, Melanie!!
A2 I actively work on minimizing my lessons so they are clear, concise & impactful-I found it easy to subtract the standardization!
A2. We need to really think hard and evaluate all options before we start having switch classes all day. Should be last option.
Always love being here! Always an inspiration, Dave!
A2) I want to eliminate waiting and transitions and empower students to be self directed
Ok, only can do two questions tonight. Sick wife and son that needs to go to bed and a busy day tomorrow. Night all.
learning simple life skills goes so overlooked!!
as would most students ... but a growth mindset can take time!
A problem I see with holding onto what brings joy is I won't let go of comfort joy for new joy on our journey
Tough!! I have had the same issue!
A2 I eliminated note taking by providing resource pages for my Ss to use as needed in a notebook.
I agree. I try to use content based vocab but we still have a vocab book. Feel Like I should incorporate it somewhat.
A2: Standardized testing for days on end & the endless red tape from gov't who never saw a classroom. That would be perfect!
singing it all day w/ my classes!learning the motions too!
A2:I'd like to eliminate grades and and make it about learning. That way everyone is working to achieve their best & continue learning
remember, sometime paper is necessary and beneficial
Can I get an Amen?? https://t.co/fmpAfgmmvM
A2: Standardized testing for days on end & the endless red tape from gov't who never saw a classroom. That would be perfect!
Right! Valuing creativity, and over compliance and averages is a transformation!
A2: eliminate the amount of T talking and give more time to Ss doing/discovering/collaborating https://t.co/5sjvaahdDY
Q2 It can be so exhilarating to add "new" to our classes but time, like space, is finite. What could you ELIMINATE from what you do?
A2 I'd eliminate worksheets! That's so many other ways to engage students and assess understanding!
don't need to like it - just need to see it! :)
Uuuug! Yes!! Spelling tests take so much time...and no hard proof of their benefit. https://t.co/294MAfq8MG
I cut spelling tests, vocab work unrelated to content, & grammar in insolation. Everything embedded- & they retain more!
This! Administrators/Planners of PD: If you can say it in an email...then say it in an email! https://t.co/IDaNvt8WUi
A2: Please let's not meet for the sake of meeting. We can eliminate meetings without a purpose. https://t.co/2M9YJKf9hc
Those that say they can and those that say they can't are right - so sayteth Henry Ford (Will Smith, according to the net)
a2: Eliminate the fundraising video, the PTA contest video etc. etc. etc.
so true...Ss don't know basic note taking skills...how to look up words in dictionaries...they still need skills!
A2 Eliminate grammar study in isolation. No more pre-packaged, meaningless worksheets designed in the name of "writing instruction"
that would be my dream. Learning for the joy of learning not "will this be for a grade?"
A2 I could probably eliminate some direct instruction in lieu of something student-centered. I just like to talk and make them laugh
hah don't get me wrong, I'll use ppr if it's necessary, but paper that goes straight into the trash is a HUGE waste
Students with good grades aren't necessarily learning. Might already know the info. Must encourage continued learning.
A2: changing the required research proj for 6th gr Ss. Now more flexibility w/ timing, end product and self-sel topics. yay!
it's so crazy when my Ss say "why are we doing Soc Studies in Science or ELA in math"
Learning ends when the grade is given. We know that https://t.co/iMTYBU95oY
that would be my dream. Learning for the joy of learning not "will this be for a grade?"
A2 some of the paperwork, a little less testing, more time for active learning, get ss involved more
Sorry I'm jumping in late. Just got done being on a Pokemon Go adventure with my wife and son. Picked up like 10 Poliwags by the river
I still teach notetaking as my Ss will be in post-sec in 2 years and need those skills
Totes agree. "I trust your judgement" Though TBH, that is usually in response to "Can I throw this in the trash?"
have you read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up? Gotta learn to identify authentic joy

A3 More time to talk w/ Ss, interact, try new things, Ss lead lessons, work on relatshps, have fun,
A3a The loudest one is how to identify what’s truly precious. For me it’s the question: Am I designing for me or for the learner?
A3: Would love the added time for . Also trying student-led book groups this year.
A4: I'm excited to just be entering edu! I have an entire blank canvas to fill!
A4 we are designing a leadership team - different apprenticeships they apply for and then write their own job duties
My thoughts exactly--Create don't just regurgitate. (Sounds kind of gross--but maybe that's the point)
A4 Working with teams to provide more learner agency in instruction and assessments
just experienced this the other day w In meeting! Kids would ❤️ it!
A3b In other words, when I design a presentation or activity, who am I doing it for, myself or the learner? What’s precious for them?
A3: My Ss have been able to do hands-on activities and simulations, and really discover content for themselves.
oh my goodness if I could go back to my first year teaching! What an idiot that guy was! But those exp. = Me as P today!
My students actually made some great projects last week! Can't believe I got paid for that!
lol! I know exactly what you mean!
I would have more time to create more meaningful experiences with my lessons.
A4:Would love to write a book that people are excited to read & use to make school a better place 4 those Ss who may not fit the mold
A3 More STEAM activities to keep Ss motivated all week!
Bet it hurt so good. I'm still hanging on to files I haven't looked at for 10 years
A4: Changed departments and responsibilities this year so starting from scratch with a new team of Ts
Thanks, Chuck. We have 10-12 to try out, too.
Ummmmm ... before those go to the dump, and you send them to Milrockee? Just to , you know, pirate
https://t.co/knN4dI1T4j
A4: Here are trash bags with file folders of every single lesson I ever taught! This hurt. But liberating!! https://t.co/JFthVqNGkM
A4. I read Debbie Miller's book, Teaching w/Intention which made me realize my canvas should be painted with MY beliefs not the basals
That is why you DO get paid. It's not for the other things
A3: Want Ss to create more. Explore thier world in and out of school. Question everything!
A4: Not in my classroom per se, but have started to blog so that's my blank canvas right now. :)
- What do you need to find? I created a video of my students talking about for .
A4: I would've liked to have flipped way earlier. Also, I started in HS but now I'm MS...perhaps going into MS from the start!
A4 Twitter chats are my new blank canvas
A4: I started from scratch a couple yrs ago- integrating subjects around PBLs & ... I never miss the stuff I left behind!
A4: Blank canvas terrifies me, but gotta embrace that. Perhaps writing a book or other digital content for other teachers.
A4: A daily or weekly time for ss to showcase talents/skills
A4: Switching from teacher to Technology Instructional Specialist.
And ask yourself what do they, or can they, bring to the table to make it even better.
You are off to a great start if you're already on chats!
That is a SUPER exciting place to be!! Also scary...but mainly amazing!
You want inspiration, you came to the right place!
A4 Well. My laptop died this morning. DIED. No warning. No backup. Guess who is starting over? This girl.
Looking for the right door so I can begin from scratch again , elusive
our co. is not quite a year old, so still working on its canvas ;o) A4
You may have motivated me to finally trash my floppy discs from the 1990s! https://t.co/huHRXZUT3f
A4: Here are trash bags with file folders of every single lesson I ever taught! This hurt. But liberating!! https://t.co/JFthVqNGkM
A4: last year I did. 14 yrs in secondary...moved to elementary. ❤️THE CHANGE. https://t.co/bSZoQO6xPH
Q4: Blank canvasses are exciting! Do u have anywhere in your edu life where u could start from SCRATCH? How could that empower you?
Yep! It has to be in that context.. What do learners have to leverage their learning.
Don't do it. Don't do it. Oh never mind. I know you already did it.
A4: probably write a children's/YA book. Love authors/illustrators and have always wanted to be one!
I'm both sorry and super excited for you! Can't wait to sit and talk with you about this over BBQ!
A4 blank canvas? teach 8th grade without subjects - entirely interdisciplinary, project/activity/experience based
Oh!! Sorry about the laptop...but I know you will turn it into something amazing!
Me too!! https://t.co/XLhX8JBz7x
Bet it hurt so good. I'm still hanging on to files I haven't looked at for 10 years
A4 I love working w/ students on project ideas that we're not even sure we can do-it's exhilarating learning https://t.co/CHk49laY2U
I feel your pain to let go but....everything you need is online and in your head/heart anyway! New is good!
A4: starting from scratch I would develop a better organization system/ planning system for myself to help time management.
Q5 Sometimes it isn't adding/subtracting, it's about mixing/combining! How could a more cross-curricular approach to edu free up time?
Yes, so very yes!
Lets get off the map and explore.
A4. Starting from scratch on gamification. Also scratching my head coaching other subjects. https://t.co/zqqPr8Qm1r
Q4: Blank canvasses are exciting! Do u have anywhere in your edu life where u could start from SCRATCH? How could that empower you?
Ouch. Been there. It hurts. But often you end up creating better stuff the 2nd time!
Hi! come over to chat! Amazing educators here - you'd love it! :)
I forgot about that! I was in the session :) Good place to start...I want in the design process when they code
A4 I also removed my VCR/DVD player from my classroom. I needed the wall space. 😂
That seems really exciting! How is it being out of the classroom?
Oh no! Been there! There was lots of crying & some inappropriate language but moved on & I'm still alive
these are some of my goals for this year too
A4) I get to start over every 10-20 days with new groups of students. I already have plans for changes.
When a student from last year came to see u and could remember exactly what the lesson of Zero my Hero was all about!!
I held on for so long...even lessons on overhead projection slides!
It's a GREAT story actually. Can't wait either! 😘
I started from scratch this year by teaching a subject I haven't taught in 2 years. I'm ready for the challenge.
A5: By using cross curricular strategies you add relevance to your instruction and it allows you to get deeper into learning
A4: new year to forge better relationships with my Ts and Ss. Have some rapport but can always grow it and know them better.
A4: Math workshop: scraping everything I've tried so far- time for my research and reading. Making it happen!
If you can scan it, let it be digital clutter, not a fire hazard!
A4 Just started blogging last year on https://t.co/6XBqJxLge7 - strange that writing should be such a blank canvas for an Eng teacher
A4 Just started blogging last year on https://t.co/PtCdXpaUMm - strange that writing should be such a blank canvas for an Eng teacher
My ss look at overheads the way I looked at typewriters!
A5: I'd like to see teams of teachers take the writing process & work on it across classes instead of writing papers in a vaccuum.
A5 not just saving time ... increasing engagement, relevance, fun - life is interdisciplinary, learning should be as well
Let me know if you need an early reader ;)
A5: it would help Ss make connections to real-world situations
I didn't even have a schedule today. Or my plans. Best teaching day ever! 😂
A5: Cross curric doesn't free time for me, but does add more meaning to the time
A4a Gotta say . Late last year I added [not my idea] some new stuff to what I do. It’s been tough unlearning & repurposing.
A5 this is the best way 2 teach. Combining subjects can create a cohesive learning environment
Thanks!! It's definitely on my "bucket list"
I did this when I had to move a 2 years ago. Since then I have never thought..if only I had those paper files..
A4 My new classroom family is my blank canvas! Excited to see all their colors emerge and blend into a beautiful masterpiece this year!
IS...THAT...WHAT....wha..... oh. my.
A4 Add more time to actually read and write.
A4: This is my blank canvas. Redefining what a learning space looks and feels like. It's not this. https://t.co/wwjgLLe6Yx
A5 Ss would see connections between subjects. Enables increased depth of learning
A5: I would love to teach a math/science combo class. Integrate and do some serious PBL
a4 my pln here at , , , ... trying to get other Ts online!
A5 Provides more places for students to hook their new learning. More connections means less reteaching.
A4b Mindfulness & growth mindset weren’t enough. What was was collaborating with peers & realizing mistakes weren’t going to kill me..
A5: I'd like to add more writing to my SS class, work with LA to build lessons. Blend in art and music! Develop multiple connections.
Taught the same grade for a long time. I'm looking for new challenge. Familiarity breeds complacency.
A5 i've heard that flipped classrooms can be successful. Any thoughts on using that method to open up time?
I'd like 2 begin writing abt how U can combine standards, passion, making, science & more & provide AWESOME personalized learning 4 Ss
A5 Definitely helps when my English classes team with History - so much crossover
A5: not just free time but TON more opps in collaboration and opps for Ss led learning, exploring, innovation https://t.co/aYw3O8P9Ae
Q5 Sometimes it isn't adding/subtracting, it's about mixing/combining! How could a more cross-curricular approach to edu free up time?
A5. I love cross curricular because you gain more insight in collaboration.
Not my kind of class room either. Rows of single desks make me break out in hives.
Q5 Integrating arts,PE, & content areas makes learning come alive! Literacy is the train, ss&sci is the magic! https://t.co/gzSbJ9IsxF
Q5 Sometimes it isn't adding/subtracting, it's about mixing/combining! How could a more cross-curricular approach to edu free up time?
S told me she needed to fax something to another school
She said "I don't even know what that is"
A4) Creativation is totally a blank canvas, think Ss will love freedom to explore, do, create, sail in own direction, time of wonder
A5 We have assemblies on character for our middle school. Joining forces with elementary school this week. https://t.co/gig8zygmim
Q5 Sometimes it isn't adding/subtracting, it's about mixing/combining! How could a more cross-curricular approach to edu free up time?
A5 I wrote a whole chapter about this in Instant Relevance. Connecting contents saves time and builds interest https://t.co/fCnWHVANtv
A4c Still slow going but it’s getting better all the way around. Who said.. “That which does not kill me makes me a better pirate?”
A5: Check out to see what crosscurricular teaching looks like at the highest most thoughtful levels
Yes! I somersault (not a whole flip) and the days I screencast lecture, class is much more ss-focused.
a5: teaching scale of maps in math b/c SS is teaching maps - teaching F-->C formula b/c Science is teaching it Ss have b'ground!
A5) I would love to collaborate w/Ts for a more integrated STEM classroom approach in addition to our robotics
My blank canvas was walking back to gen Ed classroom after being a specialist teacher. Best decision ever!
tech is not a buzzword 4 me. I go all in combining it with everything. Want to see Ss seek out tech jobs esp the girls
A5 Our STEAM teacher is dedicated to mixing subject areas into her class!
I think it must be great! Trying to suggest that for our staff PD!
I have started an in-class model. Ss rotate through stations, including flipped video.
Can I come work with you? https://t.co/woNehQ4KVp
A5: I would love to teach a math/science combo class. Integrate and do some serious PBL
A5 integrating creates natural flow, 1 lesson flows n2 another. Reading flows n2 science...math problems bcome related stry problems.
A5: I'm teaching web design with a focus...it's a work in progress. https://t.co/o2UDUZZSzb
Q5 Sometimes it isn't adding/subtracting, it's about mixing/combining! How could a more cross-curricular approach to edu free up time?
By moving direct instruct out of the classroom, you have more face-2-face time. So important to Ss success.
A.5 Problem solving does in today's world does not occur in a single subject vacuum. Every solution is connected to every subject.
A5 Love adding art to science or science to art depending how you look at it!
what a great idea! Do you have the elem Ss come to you (or vice versa?) or virtual?
A5....two words "student engagement"
A5. My colleague teaches a book and I teach a lesson that goes with the book for social studies.
A5) Not sure how it will free up time, but it would absolutely ENRICH the time. More learning & more "hooks" for individual learners.
A5: more reading in the math class = higher comprehension of the problems being asked
That was always my request - 8th grade accel Physical Science/Algebra - denied:-(
A5: We're looking at cross-grade-level mentorship in counseling classes this year. 4th gr w/1st gr. A rainbow of possibilities!
So glad you did! because of decisions like this! https://t.co/gDJqzsnc2a
My blank canvas was walking back to gen Ed classroom after being a specialist teacher. Best decision ever!
A5a Can the learning experience be integrated across topics, classes? Kinda like . Teach the basics & Ss practice across school..
So true! Students need to make meaning in math! https://t.co/j1RqjWYT5s
A5: more reading in the math class = higher comprehension of the problems being asked
Oh no :( I haven’t even asked. I should…I have both credentials!
A5 Writing can be integrated anywhere. Would love to team with other HS teachers for more authentic audience.
A5 This is how we teach in our 5th grade Makes planning easier!!
A5 When we integrate across the curriculum the learning is seamless, meaningful, and engaging! Kids love it!
We are going to the elem due to bleacher installation in our middle school. Exciting opportunity!
Q6 My garage didn't get bigger; just a more effective use of space. How could u rethink your existing space to make it more powerful?
A5 Would love to see an elimination of dedicated reading/math time need to be able to integrate all subjects throughout.
A5: if we combined Rdg and LA it would be good. But I would love Rdg and SS or SS and LA.
A5 teaching core contents under the umbrella of science and social studies gives the learner a reason for math and literacy INTEGRATE!
A5) Interdiscip course on video/movie making, Ss love to see how topic translates across the disciplines https://t.co/PDKDU0rfqR
A5: So many subjects are interconnected. Ss need to learn interconnectiveness early. Makes 4 more creative, innovative Ss.
A5: my favorite high school class was SS and LA. I still think about all the cool stuff I learned 15 years later.
that's awesome. I think our schools may be too big - 620 at our elem alone. We barely fit in auditorium!
A5 Don't you love it when Ss say,"Is this Sci or S.S.?" "Yes"
A6: I reorganized my lab tables into a circle with an inner group. Easier for all to see & discuss together!
A4 Blank canvas... not the same lesson plans from yr to yr... relevant text + engaging thought provoking interaction = growing minds
A5: is where it's at incorporating real life interdisciplinary content, collaboration, character. https://t.co/dr1n12fz97
A6: Rearrange desks to encourage more convos and debate (House of Commons style; groupings, fishbowl)
A5: I don't mind reteaching if necessary. It's no fun to find out I retaught what another T already taught unknowingly. Communication!
Just think if the entire school planned a unit together!! Decorate school, all collaborate & use same time period or historical event!
A6 We have 2 LA teachers who are team teaching. One room for minilesson, the other for writing/reading. https://t.co/PnrHDNN2kj
Q6 My garage didn't get bigger; just a more effective use of space. How could u rethink your existing space to make it more powerful?
A6 get ideas from peers. We just helped a fellow teacher arrange her space. Great minds working together
A6: ooooh - I'm so (mentally) playing with this. 2nd year in my library and I just know there are ideas for change there!
We combine Elem w/MS for a Character Pep Rally 1K Ss strong, led by HS students in Oct. BEST day every year!
were Ss upset they couldn't sit??
I think about doing this every day. Tenth year now as Instructional Tech.
We have about 850 total so hopefully we'll fit in the elem gym. Working on logistics tomorrow.
A6: If I had a blank check I'd get rid of some bookshelves and replace them with carts full of tablets or Chromebooks.
A6: Better yet, leave your room and use the entire school as your learning environment... inside and outside
A6) I don't always get my own space so I continue to work on accessibility & organization and a few statement pieces:-) i.e. LEGO mug
A6: Get rid of T desk, design for student movement, utilize space. Make it a place you/Ss want to learn/be in! https://t.co/8Oy0FKgkxU
Q6 My garage didn't get bigger; just a more effective use of space. How could u rethink your existing space to make it more powerful?
YES! YES! YES! https://t.co/2pj3W2OTge
A5 teaching core contents under the umbrella of science and social studies gives the learner a reason for math and literacy INTEGRATE!
A6: I like the idea of learning spaces. Not desks in rows but space that lets you stretch out your mind.
A6: A metaphor. I threw out junk I haven't thought about in years to make room for exciting things that I don't even know I need yet.
A6: I want to try more flexible seating. I want students to be able to choose wear they learn best. I don't need everyone at desk!
Can't do it. Still have sociology lessons & haven't taught that class for 10 years.
A6: I want to get rid of my desks...open space up for Ss. Give them more options on where and how to learn! Mobile Makerspaces!
that is what the floor space is for! I teach sci, so for labs & design challenges, standing works better
Absolutely! Had it happen in English, but sadly nev heard them say, "Is this English or Math?" Someday . . https://t.co/8khtST8U5b
A5 Don't you love it when Ss say,"Is this Sci or S.S.?" "Yes"
Love that idea! Maybe our National Junior Honor Society could lead that for us?
What an excellent idea! - how can we combine school levels like this?
A6: you could make your classroom more interactive by creating more space for SS interaction
A6: Don't be afraid to change room on a regular basis; gets Ss curious/excited as to "why" it changed. Even the HS Ss.
A6 Working on clearing out an unused courtyard to create an outdoor classroom
starting to think even doing something virutally (Skype?) could be awesome...
A6 I'm thinking it might be time to get rid of the desks! Tables, couches, easels, drop cloths, a stage, a green screen...dreaming! ❤️
A6: Allow for maker-spaces. Let the s's be a part of the design process.
A6 don't be afraid to try different arrangements till you find one that works.'Think outside the box
The cutest thing is when our littles ask those teenaged Hometown Heroes for their autographs. SUCH a win-win!!
A6 Less cabinets and my furniture but more creative S space.
A6) Cyber teachers use & design various virtual classrooms to enhance experience, activities & each lesson
My school has an outdoor courtyard. Ideal for ss and teachers.
A6 I’m working on creating distinct zones in my classroom, Quiet Zone, Collaboration Zone, Advice Zone etc
Reading for and participating in chat. My def. of a great night!
A6 I NEED a historical hologram machine and a teleporter - I will gladly move desks and dump some of my books (I love my books)
A5 I love cross-curricular collaboration b/c it adds depth & eliminates redundancy! An - example https://t.co/PeABqd959p
A6 I got rid of my desk. I have rolling cart for computer. I recognized that I rarely sat & if I need to, I sit with stu.
I am just loving all of the ideas you are sharing!!!
I miss looking for the places where I could hit my cross-curricular content in my lessons. Now I encourage it w my Ts.
A6 Eliminated teacher desk, most filing cabinets, yucky student chairs...did an overall purge. Don't miss one thing I got rid of!
A6a Most stuff I produce recently is online. I’m working towards having learners online for 5-6 minutes then doing something real..
A5: taught honors history-my ELA peer wanted to join forces, mirror our content with her skill & process pieces. Great connections!
so important to have role models from our own school communities!
I absolutely want a TARDIS for my classroom!
A6: See the lockers in our Ukulele lab? We took em out and tripled our space; paint & carpet coming this week! https://t.co/gcTb2LKrYB
Thanks! A lot of ss input and thought went into the redesign. Has changed the class culture in a great way.
A6 Flexible seating options
thank you! love to share what works for us
A6 would love to have my classroom work as a maker space as well. Thinking big picture
Google hangout could let it happen in more than 2 schools.
I got some negative pushback from Ts when I mentioned I want flexible seating..not letting it discourage me! I want what kids deserve!
NIIICE! Real standing desks!
A6b By basics learners will be exposed [curiosity aroused by] to a snippet of KSA (knowledge, skill, attitude] then do something with.
A6 Let your learners help design the space. Even the littlest of the Littles love designing!
we did this years ago for Olympics. Why not do something election related? (Could avoid politics and do book characters!)
A6) Ts are pack rats. If you haven't used it in the last year or 2 then there's probably no reason to keep it "just in case "
A6 I want to put wheels on everything! Then it can change every day with ease
that's what this all about it!!
If theyd let me, I'd knock down a few walls to expand my room and make it ideal.
A6 Exactly what you did....throw stuff out.
A6: Make a space where Ss can take their ideas beyond the moon. Give them voice, choice in designing https://t.co/jBPaO9YlqI
a6: I've had to move classrooms each of the past 8 years or so... I'm good at keeping the minimum
I would like to be an S at your school!!
Here's some I want to learn about/try using this year
I have a marker/bulletin board on wheels. serves as closet door in addition to whatever else to do!
A6 I'm working w/ students now to make better use of our classroom space- a great & real challenge! https://t.co/wRTTxjjJxQ
A5 Real life is cross circular and the classroom should be too
Q7: (Q7 has been ELIMINATED to create more TIME & SPACE in your life tonight! Bored? Do some horse algebra!) https://t.co/19IcCG6tbg
The bottoms have this cool swing bar for your feet.
A6c Learners engaging with content is one thing. But growing the experience by involving peers in the next cubicle [state?] better.
A6: I love "learning zone" and flexible seating, since I don't have a classroom now, I want to help others w/this idea.
ack! Please don't get rid of books, though!!
YUP! and, it would look so cool
You're welcome to join us any time!
Powerful! What a wonderful way to unify a body of students and staff! https://t.co/yeuCUjs4iK
Just think if the entire school planned a unit together!! Decorate school, all collaborate & use same time period or historical event!
We have a ukulele lab because of generous people like and who helped us make it happen!
A6... I could consolidate where possible, repurpose, and rethink what truly adds value.
totally understand other Ts just look at me shake their head and say they're curious how this will work out.
I had a co-worker forward me that e-mail right after I received it from you :)

A6: I'd love to have a makerspace in my room! Student creations = student engagement.
Struggled with that today, but stuck with it and told me I got the correct answer!
A6:love to see more rooms use standing desks, re-arrangeable seating conducive to collaboration, open spaces. Get rid of clutter!

Q6 My garage didn't get bigger; just a more effective use of space. How could u rethink your existing space to make it more powerful?
A7: If you only had the power to eliminate grading too. Now THAT would be awesome. https://t.co/OBT0EDmP0P
