#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Welcome to #worldgeochat! Tonight we are talking about the nations of Japan, North Korea, and South Korea. Please take a second to tell us who you are and where you are from #worldgeochat
Ed, 7th grade world geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. I can’t wait to hear how you are teaching about Japan and the Koreas. The questions for tonight’s chat can be found here: https://t.co/88Gd29vS7m#worldgeochat
Pete here!! (I’ve been mia recently.... lots of stuff going on/career change). Popping in for a bit to chat w/all these fantastic #worldgeochat’rs! Central Maine is finally warming up!!
Hi #worldgeochat, this is Bill Chapman, a retired secondary social studies teacher, checking in from Berkeley, CA, just across the Pacific from tonight's area of focus.
Hi all! I'm Melissa from Atchison, KS. I teach 6-8 Soc Studies. Will be in and out all evening but looking fwd to seeing what everyone says! #worldgeochat
Ramadan mubarak, #worldgeochat! It’s c/s from NG in DC. Saw #BTS trending earlier, remembered tonight’s topic, and realized @ecasey77 was really down with the kids.
My wife and I started podcasting about health and weightloss a few months ago. We incorporated as an LLC last month and have been taking on clients to educate on insulin, weight loss, ketogenic eating, et al.... #worldgeochat
A1: Some of the issues I have addressed with Japan and the Koreas are Japan’s high urban population densities, disasters in Japan due to earthquakes & tsunamis, the Korean War and North Korea’s government’s human rights violations.
#worldgeochat
Jeremy, parent and more in Connecticut. May be doing more lurking, both because I'm learning and because I'm finally trying to get myself dinner. ;) #worldgeochat

A1 In my modern global issues class we have the freedom to do case studies, so I am currently focuses on comparing and contrasting the two Koreas. #worldgeochat
I cover medieval Japan - Prince Shotoku, the rise of the samurai and feudalism, as well as the origins of shinto and Japanese Buddhism. Korean Peninsula is a passing discussion to connect the Chinese and Japanese units. #worldgeochat
A1: We focus on the impact of isolation, cultural diffusion, and impact of European Imperialism on the region of East Asia. It is interesting for my students to see how each country reacted differently. #worldgeochat
A1: I'm brand new to my course this year - so we're just hitting these countries for the first time now. We start Japan tomorrow - I have them looking at traditional Japanese houses via a virtual tour! #worldgeochat
Comparing population pyramids for this region was definitely eye opening for my students. It got them asking a ton of great questions as part of our inquiry on population growth. #worldgeochat
A1 #worldgeochat
I always liked to address UNCLOS and learn about territorial claims between nations. Why do China and Japan both lay claim to the same islands and what does that mean?
A1 Something that seems to emerge again and again in geographic discussion of Japan is the peerless way it engages in globalization in the cultural sphere. KitKat culture ... #worldgeochathttps://t.co/LmUwqpP0oR
we did when we worked on food truck designs ... used the comparison of Mexican and Cuban food to help reinforce the need to not overgeneralize cuisine #worldgeochat
Examining borders is another focus of ours as well this year. I would love to hear how you did this Ashley. Below are some photos my cousin took of the Chinese border with North Korea. #worldgeochat
A1: We didn’t have too much time to dig deep into these countries. The main focal point was the limitations and globalization of the economies. #worldgeochat
My pleasure! I'll let you know how it goes. Nearpod is the bomb for Virtual tours. Check out the Smithsonian too - they have virtual exhibits! #worldgeochat
we discussed the categories & then various groups took an individual type to conduct independent research to share with the class ... will be extending to have Ss find historic examples as well #worldgeochat

A2: for Japan, I find that I focus on modern history; for Korea, we go back to early 1900s to understand the rise of totalitarianism in the country #worldgeochat
Good evening #worldgeochat. Late, but still here. I teach AP Human and World Culture to 9th graders in Orlando. Looking forward to learning something tonight. These countries are a weakness of my teaching.
A2: We addressed the dropping of the A-bombs and the Korean War by looking at different coverage of these events from textbooks in other countries. I used the book History Lessons: How Textbooks from Around the World Portray U.S. History https://t.co/76JSwjPv8m#worldgeochat
A2: We go over the key ideas of US foreign policy w/ all of them; we use maps, document analysis, and some video clips usually; trying to find better examples of audio #worldgeochat
A2 Shintoism, WWII to near present. Substitute plan often includes NatGeo’s Inside North Korea. A little dated, but Ss always talk about it years later. #worldgeochat
A2 If I were teaching today, I'd definitely look at the long history between Korea and Japan. The comfort women of WWII did not materialize out of nothingness. #worldgeochat
A2: Definitely the Samurai. Working on forming something for that right now. For Korea, I know my Ss are interested in North Korea and how it's different, so i plan on elaborating on their economic history #worldgeochat
A2 Well, today IS the birthday of the monarch who created what is pretty much acknowledged as the greatest alphabet in the WORLD: hangul. So, that. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/xIR5oxG041
A2 Well, today IS the birthday of the monarch who created what is pretty much acknowledged as the greatest alphabet in the WORLD: hangul. So, that. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/FP9zTH68UE
A2 no time for all, but for APHG, I mention Japanese Occupation of Korea and split of the Koreas. Economic strength of South Korea, dual naming issues of East Sea/Sea of Japan, and the 4 Asian Tigers. Also demographic changes of Japan/ nation-state example #worldgeochat
A2 Cnn10 had a story about how ramen noodles were created after wwII food shortages created a need to preserve noodles made from wheat flour. #worldgeochat
A2: For Korea, I give a broad overview of the three ancient kingdoms, China's invasion, Japan's invasion, and then the Korean War. For Japan, we talk about Japan learning from Imperialists, taking over territories leading into WWII. That's all I can fit in. #worldgeochat
A2 no time for all, but for World Geo, we look at East Asia as a region. Icons like Torii Gates, Kimonos, sushi, anime. Talk about Korean split and learn ROK flag symbols, dual naming of East Sea/Sea of Japan, and the 4 Asian Tigers. #worldgeochat
A2) First civilizations, Feudal society in Ancient Civs. I also cover more modern history in the 6th GEO esp since they are always in the news these days. #worldgeochat
For older students who aren’t phased by subtitles, both Japan and South Korea have spectacular, idiosyncratic film industries. Song Kang-ho is just about my favorite actor working today. #worldgeochat
A3: One way I have addressed this is the Geography Alive mapping lab materials. I also have discussed the Ring of Fire and effects of earthquakes & tsunamis on Japan. #worldgeochat
For older students who aren’t phased by subtitles, both Japan and South Korea have spectacular, idiosyncratic film industries. Song Kang-ho is just about my favorite actor working today. #worldgeochat
Same here! We skim through the history of all three, touch base with the Korean War, and settle with current events between North Korea and the United States. #worldgeochat
other faves (not anime) but I loved Ultraman and Johnny Sakko and the Flying Robot as a kid!! love using clips in class!! #worldgeochathttps://t.co/5jeyw2wc9s
What does it mean that Japan is the number one foreign holder of US Treasury debt at $1.137 Trillion? Ahead of China which holds $1.16 Trillion. #worldgeochat
A3) we talk about how Japan is so mountainous, why, and how they have preserved a lot of their forested lands. We also talk about how Korea is the Land of Golden Embroidery because of the rivers. #worldgeochat
MrsDevlinSS GeoPenny ecasey77 One of our coworkers visited the Studio Ghibli museum when she went to Japan last year. That’s a good place to start. #worldgeochat
A4 In terms of recent developments with a chance at peace being possible I have used @cnn10 and @newsela “Summit between the two Koreas offers opportunity to help heal old scars” https://t.co/FTHXNKZ3Uo#worldgeochat
A3 this visualization of the 2011 earthquake is FASCINATING and the students ask me to re-watch it #worldgeochathttps://t.co/bq8HZL2l6C Videos of the aftermath are hard to watch
A1: my dad fought in both the Vietnam & the Korean wars, he also traveled extensively through Japan and Cambodia I try to bring a little of his PG rated stories into the classroom. #worldgeochat
A3: We focus on impact of the Ring of Fire, w/videos from Nat Geo, and How the Earth Was made: Tsunami. Mountains are key, we read about them. There's a great Nat. Geo. Wild that gives a nice overview of Honshu in the first 5 mins from cities to the Japanese Alps.#worldgeochat
A4) start by talking about the end of WW2 and start of Cold War/Truman Doctrine stuff. Then we get into Korean War and how those tensions have remained so high. #worldgeochat
JUST IN: North Korea's decision to scrap high-level meeting with South is not in line with Panmunjom declaration - South Korea's unification ministry. For the latest on #NorthKorea, follow our live blog https://t.co/EaWskXBrSp
I haven’t done it this year, but in the past I had students look at a typical school day for a student from each. They also would be given a daily class schedule to see what the day would be like if they lived in North or South Korea. I can’t remember the sources :( #worldgeochat
A4 Current Events discussion and reporting. Find, present and discuss newspaper, magazine, journal and broadcast reports on the ongoing events. #worldgeochat
A4: I want to start first with exposure to what life in these places are like. Ss need to know what makes them different. When I taught econ, I used a section of the movie the Interview (of course, a school appropriate one) to help Ss understand North Korea! #worldgeochat
A4: We re-enact the battle lines of the Korean War by acting out the text book. Then we look at more recent events via youtube and discuss the issues that my students want to know more about. #worldgeochat
A5: I was lucky enough to have my friend who taught 8 years in Japan come talk to my students about life in Japan. He used these slides https://t.co/wsm3bKUtfG#worldgeochat
A4 cont.: I love the Stratforvideo youtube channel for its geo challenge series:
https://t.co/njeMvInWsr the 2 min videos show the basic geography of countries but also presents the modern geopolitical struggles for nations. #worldgeochat
A4 Not SKorea, but border geography: Werner Herzog did a terrific little profile of the cultural signifigance of the volcano Mount Paektu, on the China/NKorea border, in his film “Into the Inferno.” #worldgeochathttps://t.co/pkUFhygafz
A5: My students are really into this section of the world. As we progress, I want THEIR opinions - as we go through it - then I can shape my culture lessons. I'm starting with focusing on daily life, I think the Ss will find futons and sleeping on the floor wild! #worldgeochat
A5 lasting impacts can be global - economic strength and power of Japan during Cold War, strength of South Korea since fall of Berlin Wall #worldgeochat
A4 Not SKorea, but border geography: Werner Herzog did a terrific little profile of the cultural signifigance of the volcano Mount Paektu, on the China/NKorea border, in his film “Into the Inferno.” #worldgeochathttps://t.co/3nshQYCIaF
I cannot stress enough - ask members of the media to talk to your students about he stories they cover. Many of them are more than happy to if you're willing to work to make it work. #worldgeochat
A5: I really like the food, but I also like to focus on the language. I also focus on the innovation of Korea, with celedon and dedication of Japanese to better themselves. Throughout history each of these traits are a key part of their culture and are passed on. #worldgeochat
A6: Not sure yet, as this is my first time teaching this section of the world! I'm thinking of using @nearpod 's draw it tool to have them try writing their names in Japanese at the moment! #worldgeochat
A5 cont.: This is a really old article about a Sushi Chef, but it shows the drive to better oneself. https://t.co/EhSigusHFO For Korea, I will definitely show the opening ceremony from this year's Olympics because it shows innovation as a key part of culture. #worldgeochat
Thank you all so much for joining us tonight! I know I learned a ton and I can way to use these new resources and strategies with my students! Thank you all for sharing!

A5) I do a Chopped Challenge. I have the kids make an authentic Japanese or Korean dish. They have to explain the dish, why they made it and why it is a significant dish to portray the food of these cultures. #worldgeochat
