hi! thanks for joining, havent heard of that but look forward to checking it out
I'm in Orland Park. Just drove by the prison yesterday for my daughter's gymnastics.

Thanks Sean. Love your feedback on our book. You're doing great work w/
oh yeah, I'm Mikhail in Irvine, CA founder of 7twelve Marketing
Don't get sucked in to reading. It just causes a flow of cash straight to Amazon.
lol love the honesty and great to see you! summer is a great time to catch up :)
so glad you could join us today!
Finished Year of Yes (Shonda Rhimes) working through Leading with Questions
4th & 5th grade T in ME. A S recommended Full Cicada Moon & I am glad I read it. Reclaiming Conversation for the adult set.
thanks it's a new program to get free copies of paid apps to educators
Quick nugget of useless information. Shonda Rhmes went to Marian Catholic - where I work.
early childhood educator in Alaska. Read Into the Wild!
Q1: Godin says, "Linchpins are indispensable creative problem solvers" How we teach these skills? https://t.co/vX1WAyNckA
Don't hate on him. You all need to be understanding. is from Maine, after all. https://t.co/IWIpUe2uyP
John from Saco, ME. I wish I had read a book recently.
I didn't make the list, I just compiled the data.
hi! great to see you here. havent heard of that one, look forward to checking it out
A1 Ben from Batavia, IL. Just finished Creative Confidence by Tom & David Kelley of
so adorable :) glad you could join! we need an comeback in Boston this November
love that one!! glad to have you here today
YES! handed me Linchpin during talk at . Read it that night
believe it or not, been on twitter since 08 i believe and this woul dbe my first chat
Hopefully I can pull it off.
A1: Teaching students how to Question Amazing when we only allow our Ss to focus on questions for a long time b/f discussion
Give them fun problems to solve: A kid said he wished there was a roller coaster at school so we ran with it.. Where? How much?
A1: I've found that design thinking and PBL approaches to learning help Ss and myself develop these skills
A1: In order to get Ss to be creative problem solvers we need to be providing them with creative problems to solve.
A1 Foster the way of the linchpin through open ended problems &/or PBLs. Multiple pathways to success. Promote dialogue.
A1: I like giving students very controversial topics, where discussions, problems & disagreements happen naturally.
A1 group work were you have assigned roles that can rotate
asking questions is key!! as Ts crafting essential questions to drive inquiry is amazing but always challenging
words of wisdom! https://t.co/RzkigWLXaW
A1 Foster the way of the linchpin through open ended problems &/or PBLs. Multiple pathways to success. Promote dialogue.
A1: Also via , a related question has been my desktop wallpaper ever since she posed it for me. https://t.co/VDrCjjCHG5
agreed! problem solving and seeking is the way of the future https://t.co/sxrBtmyW2D
A1: In order to get Ss to be creative problem solvers we need to be providing them with creative problems to solve.
A1: Can we set them up to succeed with easy to find linchpins? Seems like a good facilitator could steer them at first.
thats so awesome! is there one on the playground now ;)
I have been focusing a lot on what it takes to get the students questioning and supporting their journeys.
agreed, we as Ts have to model these qualities as well
., so much potential with that S interest! A scaled version, planning in minecraft, cost of building. Fun!
Q2 coming right up. We're looking at How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie https://t.co/AWlljiHyK3
This is such a hard shift for some educators We've been trained to deliver material & teach Ss to retain info
no, we realized there was not enough room, too loud, & expensive but they had some great ideas around those problems!
Tough question. My brain says no but heart says yes
Q2: Share a time where you were the linchpin and created a solution to a challenge vs complaining https://t.co/Aw7LYTdsCa
agreed. we must also be creative problem solvers and find what works for us so that we can keep learning
next is to make your time with students like an edcamp
A1: Lucky that my work lets me adapt to Ss needs w/o set "have to" curriculum. Allows me to model skills needed to be a Linchpin
A1. Find smaller companies that allow students to work in real life scenarios during internships rather than grabbing coffees
a PD I went to once asked, what would you do if you had unlimited funding... THINK BIG! Amazing what happens when u do
A2: Rescheduled rooms for classes at my school during major construction so the school did not purchase any portables.
A2: You just described my job. Always looking for better ways to accomplish tasks & problem solve.
A2 I believe that you shouldn't complain about it unless you have a solution in your pocket
Love that joined from we need more collaboration with ! Check them out https://t.co/nwCdQZmGOe
A1. Find smaller companies that allow students to work in real life scenarios during internships rather than grabbing coffees
A2: Feel like a broken record -I have been practicin Covey's rule "Seek to Understand b/f being Understood" to assist in growth
Teaching Business Econ 4 years ago & our Ss didn't like our fundraiser so I had them create a solution. Eventually we got there.
Exactly what we try to do! Ss AND Ts identify needs (or we help them to) then create -ish lessons https://t.co/ymzChvguSj
next is to make your time with students like an edcamp
love it! Begin with empath ❤️
A2: If having to cover someone's bus duty is the worse thing that happens today, I call it a good day. Say it openly and proudly
A2: Any time I try to help a T use tech in the classroom to advance learning.
that is how my robotics class is
A former principal went to Archdiocese & told them what they were doing wrong. They put her in charge.
awesome that you had the students get involved too! Great way to build community
A2: My Dad use to say he heard a story of man with no shoes .. then that man met a man with no feet.
if you don't have a solution, they you are part of the problem
too many amazing problem solvers in the house tonight for can barely keep up with Q2!
Couldn't get it past the person running the fundraiser, but their voices were heard.
See one. Do one. Teach one. Wise words from my friend and coworker https://t.co/GAW3ROA9kI
A2: Any time I try to help a T use tech in the classroom to advance learning.
that in itself is a lesson for Ss, always remember to try
A2: Some of my students complained about the curriculum. I then made a student lead curriculum team & they did the planning.
Grit is a word we should be careful using with its history
Doesn't that get you tho.. that someone stopped it. Someone who prolly has always done it that way.
A2 Still work in progress but letting S voice play a part in S experience at school. Genius Hr., multi-genre projs are steps
Q3: said, “we don't have a technology problem we have a leadership problem.” Would you agree? Why?
Absolutely. First question is where do you want Ss to go? Then we problem solve to get them there.
edcamp PD is the best! love the conversations
A3 I would say sort of. We have a problem with getting people to be models. If you want it, be a model for it
They were very frustrated w/ that part of the process. We now have open minded admin in place. Moving forward
great ideas, and student voice is powerful for their own motivation and their ideas are often inspiring
A3: It always comes down to relationships and culture be it at home, school, business.
great lesson in not giving up. The ideas shares for moving forward are powerful and work!
I think we know what we want to do, but then get constrained by resources or rules set by leadership.
A3: I have seen teachers say "I want students to be life long learners" but it stops there when confronted with unfamiliar tech.
Allowing for S decision making empowers S. They see they have a role to play as creator rather than passive acceptor.
A3 we have a problem with implementation of technology, not the technology itself
helping bring out the linchpin within them :)
We def have leadership problem when it comes to tech & changing status quo. Leaders too close to retirement - why start now?
agreed! opportunity for us as Ts & As to be problem solvers and find ways to work around
Not all of them. But enough to throw an anchor behind the boat instead of steering it somewhere else.
or when the technology may cause a wrinkle in their never changing lessons plans circa 1984
I do make my own t-shirts
And be the problem finders ,too!
Can I get an AMEN!? It drives me nuts! Normally the solution is so simple. They get blinded by their own frustration.
this is where I heard the quote. this is a great discussion. Technology-Driven, Human-Centered https://t.co/oBcaheUoxE
thanks for sharing, great quote
A3 Modeling is key. Also, supporting a culture where Ts can experiment & reinvent curric to foster new teaching/learning
Wow! Never heard this quote b4. Notice that a driver & leaders like this all get waved at the same way https://t.co/47fof7ltZb
Modeling is key at exceed level
A3: we need more leadership opportunities for Ts without them having to leave the class 100%. Ts are doing great things
Or depending on the type of leader they don't see the role of it their job. We need more leaders like
A4 JJJRH resonated w/me. always asking ourselves how we model, how we provide "jabs" aka value before asking others to do things
We got complimented for our teacher leadership by advancED team visiting our school this year. Says a lot about admin
I agree wholeheartedly. Supportive Adm would also look to lessen workload of committee work/duties to free up T leader
A4: I find it most powerful when students share the changes u are making in education w/ other T's. Makes it easier 4 change
Agreed. I heard him speak in SanDiego last year. That whole district wreaks of awesomeness.
Been lurking, but thought q4 is a great ?. Definitely something to work on. Going to read this:
https://t.co/84qQBAbxRJ
A4: my favorite way to share stories these days is https://t.co/ZAZMGVsifq hope to see on there sharing your stories
A4 every class should have a to share a story. You cannot depend on others to do it. Mine is
Agree. We have a team hashtag and a school hashtag. Great way to see what other T's are doing. https://t.co/PLckRHQ7H6
A4 every class should have a to share a story. You cannot depend on others to do it. Mine is
S generate blog posts and tweets help share our stories and practice in school.
A4: Multiply the effect conferences, s, and chats, Connect Ts w quality & they'll seek out & share their stories.
I'm flat broke until July for books, I'm going nuts trying to hold off.
I've seen it in person. It's special. 's is one of the best things I've seen.
I'll send you some of mine. I'm never going to finish. But I guess that the point isn't it?
A4) Would love to view "a day in the life" stories of Ts around the country. Could learn so much!!
how much would pay for my book?
exactly! once more Ts join we'll all be able to take virtual fieldtrips into classrooms around the world
I'll pay you in glitter & unicorns so it's hard to measure that.
Q5 next! Looking at whose taken the world by storm with his motivational words of wisdom!
Telling my story through my blog, but I need to do it more often - and probably need to start podcast or video blog.
Nathan's question how many of you have a hashtag you post your story to?
do unicorns eat rainbows and poop butterfiles or is it the other way around?
works amazing for VLOGS. Easy to embed.
A4: I often tell "How I Learned What Not To Do" stories then contrast those with ideas for "So Instead Let's" (both for Ts & Ss)
Not a recipe guy. I think of ind S needs. are starting pts
A5 you have to be willing to fail. You cannot take yourself too seriously. Ask your student what they like to do.
I think you got it. I asked my panel of experts.
I'll take a closer look at this next week. Still not buying into SnapChat, but I'm sure you can sell it to me
Thanks - I'lll be in the basement setting up my studio tomorrow.
unicorns eat grass but fart rainbows
Need a green screen? Have green screen will travel. :-D
A5: Transparency. Change effects each of us differently. Build a path, collaboratively. Honor diverse opinion & be open.
snapchat also do live stories on different topics around the world, ive learned so much!
Take the risk! Especially when you're a leader Need to model it's ok to fail as long as you grow from it
A5a: Never model "my way or the highway" ideas. Intentionally model multiple pathways to growth/success Both/And NOT Either/Or
you need to make that all caps EMPATHY
there are so many good ideas in this one tweet! https://t.co/pvmsGvI8dZ
A5: Transparency. Change effects each of us differently. Build a path, collaboratively. Honor diverse opinion & be open.
Love to see it. Is it on your snapchat or somewhere else?
Right! If we want ss to risk failure, it needs to be modeled at all levels
we fail all the time but it is learning
on snapchat :) username - askmsq. also is a MUST follow
I think that's why I don't buy in, because there's no way to go back. I've got a lot to learn though.
you can save the story to your camera roll and upload, great way to blog daily :)
I know I'm behind on the linchpin question but I have to answer anyway.
A5b: Fail enthusiastically & joyfully as publicly as possible. Amazing how unsettling it is for Ss/Ts to hear "YES! Nice FAIL!"
yea very interesting idea. I've thought of using Facebook live but Snap could be better
I love looking my ss in the eyes and saying "huh! that didn't work! I wonder why..." messes w their minds :-D
you need a medium that you can go back and review and share with stakeholders
Love this! Why can't more leaders use this as their model.
https://t.co/m1kfzeyfc5
A5: Transparency. Change effects each of us differently. Build a path, collaboratively. Honor diverse opinion & be open.
facebook live is on my list, has it down with the wirecast setup
Schools thrive because of their linchpin teachers. Those teachers connect with and empower their kids.
once this becomes your culture, amazing things can happen, its truly liberating
A5 We're not masters of everything. If we don't know, ask. Model how to find possible solutions. Too much of school is polished.
Thanks, Tim! I start with goals. Use & as frameworks
A5c: Teach MINDSET, not METHOD. I don't care how you get to X. Just be able to show me how you didn't then how you DID get to X
Also love that I'm the only one that knows I'm in your header photo from EdCamp Chicago.
I agree. Why do so many T's have a problem with this???
2 phones 1 broadcast I'd really try out Periscope also - your organic reach will be awesome with your twitter followers
Agree, but every school also needs to stop blocking Twitter
I actually don't care if you get to X, tell why it didn't get there. Focus on journey
Especially difficult to get Ts there when they're so worried about content and not about learning
Love that there is no leader in the group, not a presentation a conversation.
Learning will never happen with that type of mindset. Makes me sad.
What will you take from tonight's to change/improve your practice TOMORROW. In other words: Don't just chat, change
Want a look outside the world of education. Amazing lessons in these books to rock the next school year https://t.co/rpFwNmPFLF
Our curriculum is UbD, so I'm trying to build off it
has the best answer ever to this i wont do it justice he will come on and share
Thanks , . Enjoy the night and the rest of the week.
Thanks for sharing. I mean my wallet hates you, but I really appreciate it. Anyone need a speaker? Will work for books.
So and I promised a killer June? Think we've delivered 2 weeks running. THANK YOU Can't WAIT for
Thanks for the invite to . I might have to stop in here again. Great discussion!
Great chat tonight! Sabba you rocked it, as always! Thanks to all who participated!
