Welcome to the #MinecraftEDU Chat Miners, Crafters and Creepers. We are super excited to chat about tonight's topic: Is #FortniteBattleRoyale the new #Minecraft? Can't wait to hear your replies and opinions!
A0~ #MinecraftEdu Hey guy! Pickle here, I am one of the moderators of this chat and I am a student. I am in New England and I have never actually played Fortnite before sadly, on my bucket list though!
A0: Hi everyone Mike Washburn here. Co-host of @OnEducationPod & Private School Teacher & Technology Integration Specialist from Toronto Ontario Canada. Been playing Fortnite off and on since Alpha. #MinecraftEDU
Ben Spieldenner, English Teacher, Ohio, Fortnite is a blast but I have never won. I will be in and out of the chat...been a while, great to see everyone! #MinecraftEdu
Hey Mike, glad we can continue the conversation!. One questions I had about @OnEducationPod Does the On stand for Ontario, and if so, shouldn't you ad a US for well, us. make it OnUsEducation. #MinecraftEdu

@misterwashburn, @OnEducationPod, @OnEducationPod
The On is not for Ontario, its as in "this podcast is on education." The company name is OnPodcastMedia and we are going to be producing a number of other podcasts with the "On" branding @OnEducation is just the start of big things. #MinecraftEDU

Q1: What is it about Minecraft that has made the game loved by so many generations of gamers for such a long period of time? How has it appealed to educators as well? #MinecraftEDU

Welcome Sean. I agree completely, I am just not that competitive I guess, Loved COD series, which is closest Ive come to playing a Battle Royale. #MinecraftEDU
Not yet, since I haven't interacted much with the students and we're focusing a lot on empathy-building ATM. Eg. Currently reprogramming villagers into NPCs to react to the loss of an NPC the students inadvertently killed. #MinecraftEdu
A1: The only limit is a personās imagination. The simplicity of the blocks and the complexity of commands is fantastic. I love @playcraftlearn because it allows my students to explore literature in a completely different way! #MinecraftEDU

I kind of like the battle version of Goldeneye back in the day and maybe if I went for the paid version of Fortnite, but the building part seems to matter little compared to the blasting others en masse and hoping to land well #MinecraftEDU
Love the show, listened to the pilot and episodes 1 & 2, so I am about 2 weeks behind? Will catch up. Great powerfule and meaningful conversations, but not enough #MinecraftEDU in episodes 1 & 2!

But our astronomy teacher says that whenever she pulls the xbox controller out for the planetarium projector, the reaction is always "ARE WE GOING TO PLAY FORTNITE?" #MinecraftEdu
A1: the game is so scalable - as you play you continue to learn and grow with the game - you continue to see cool things people do and have this āI want to do thatā feeling all the time #minecraftedu
Q1: What is it about Minecraft that has made the game loved by so many generations of gamers for such a long period of time? How has it appealed to educators as well? #MinecraftEDU
A1~ #MinecraftEdu myself, I am in love with the unlimited possibilities and always being able to keep finding new things in this simple, yet complicated game. From an education standpoint it has been made so easy to implement almost anything a teacher wants for any lesson simply
A1: Minecraft was the right game at the right place at the right time. The graphic style made it a novelty to propel word of mouth. It has been developed to foster an open play style that allows people to be free and creative. #MinecraftEDU
A1: I think its versatility. As a player, sometimes I feel like creative builds, and sometimes there's something zen about survival, and the ability to switch lets you find an experience to match your mood. Teaching, it can be adapted for pretty much any subject. #minecraftedu
Very well said Ben. It certainly has a wide appeal to many player types. The low barrier of entry and high ceiling are also extremely important. It is also highly collaborative by nature, which we love! #MinecraftEDU
That would e awesome, fortnite on an IMax or Planetarium ceiling? Can you make it happen??? Imagine a wide angle view of a Minecraft world too! #MinecraftEDU
A1: I wouldnāt say āgenerations of gamersā as itās been around less than 10 years though it is enjoyed by young and old. I think itās because you can get out of it want you want-fighting, venturing, discovery, creating-like LEGOs, Fortnite is like laser tag #MinecraftEdu
I love the balance of the free and creative modes with the more challenging survival and PvP maps along with Adventure mode, which further restricts players and introduces new challenges. #MinecraftEDU
A1: Double Q: 1. #MinecraftEDU is a sandbox game. You can never fail! 2. Ts should adapt to what Ss are doing to stay relevant. That's what's so appealing IMO.
To be fair, everyone said Minecraft is like LEGO. We all knew it was more than that I think we should at least acknowledge that Fortnite could be too. Also, laser tag is fun, so is LEGO. Different strokes for different folks. #MinecraftEDU
They are too busy playing with electrical circuits, conductors and insulators, and making sparks to be too interested in much else today :) #MinecraftEdu
We're going to be experimenting with the digital projector over the summer a bit. I don't think it has the ability to run games, but I'm curious to figure out what we can do with video! #MinecraftEdu
I would say generations, the average age of a Minecraft player is like 28 years old. Kids play it, parents play it, and their grandparents play it. Def. Generational, but I think this is happening with Fortnite too, ask @irvspanish His son plays with his grandpa. #MinecraftEDU
A1: I like to think it's the amount of open-ended possibilities the game allows for. There is no "right way" to play Minecraft, and that allows there to be so many branches and communities from building, to battling, to #MinecraftEdu
I love laser tag (just had a huge outing 2 days ago), but itās not as creative an enterprise. To be fair, the non-Battle-Royale in the paid version of #Fortnite may offer more opportunities. #MinecraftEdu
Agreed. And what strongly appeals to me about Fortnite is not just the game itself, but the pontential of exposing gamers to an engine like Unreal, just as #MinecraftEDU exposed kids to Java and object oriented programming.
Totally agree! Minecraft is the epitome of emphasizing the process and not necesarrily the end result. Although, viewing an incredible build is aweinspiring too. #MinecraftEDU
A2: Fornite has all the "bones" you would need to basically make a better Minecraft. There is a building environment and a sandbox. The building is fun and the graphics are a great style. #MinecraftEdu
A2: I think what has a strong appeal is the cartoon like characters, the lack of gore, and the adrenaline rush from battling others in a live setting. #MinecraftEDU
It would be neat to see them implement some fom of electrical system like Redstone or command/programming system like command_blocks, or does it already have this? #MinecraftEDU
A2-2: The APPEAL comes from the Battle Royale game mode that is free and super popular. My point has always been about capitalizing on its popularity to make a purpose-built mode for EDU. JUST LIKE #MinecraftEDU did. #meta
A2: I think #FortniteBattleRoyale is a hit mostly because of the socialization, the intensity and speed of battle, and starting with a mostly level playing field and equal footing #MinecraftEDU
Totally! And that awe-inspiring build may just be a starting place for someone to go off and create their own project! It can totally run in circles like that. Finishing one project just means you can open a door to another! #minecraftedu
I think for that it would require building up the construction aspect and finding a way to make the battles more purposeful and less random-itās possible, but I wouldnāt expect it that soon #MinecraftEDU
A3: I have kids recreating the game in #minecraft. Coolest thing so far was the use of changing the world border to simulate the storm. Super innovative #minecraftedu
Imagine you could have themed battles from episodes in history though, various mercenaries, etc. Or go to science and be the equivalents of bloodcells, viruses, bacteria, etc. Might be corny, but maybe it could work metaphorically. #MinecraftEDU
Yes, I love the idea of using command blocks to modify the size of the map and shrink it. Could use "lucky chests" as well. I mean it is kind of like Hunger Games in Minecraft. Have you played Walls on a server? #MinecraftEDU
Long way to go...and are they really intent on going the Open #Sandbox route? Their most popular game is #BattleRoyale - that is carrying them right now #MinecraftEDU
A2: Bragging rights! I have so many kids brag about level, gear etc. I try to do alot of co-op games in my class and this is when my kids shine! #MinecraftEDU
He is very convincing, but not sure he has swayed me yet. In my opinion though, I haven't given Fortnite a fair chance in terms of gameplay time logged. #MinecraftEDU
A3: Iāve seen people have massive battles in Minecraft, but Iām not sure of any learning benefit. The social aspects or searching for valuable tools elements of Fortnite are beneficial and able to be replicated and used in instruction #MinecraftEDU
A3: You could probably recreate a lot of things Fortnite does in Minecraft. I'm not sure it would translate to engagement the way we would like. #MinecraftEdu
So, as the teacher, could we be the third party producing those random events of disaster and chaos? Could use this to simulate global issues, lava to burn crops for hunger, waves of zombies/skeletons for war, etc. #MinecraftEDU
When I think generations, I think games that span generations and not just played by many ages. I think of Pac Man and Mario who still have new adventures. In 10 years the latest variation of #MinecraftEDU then can be said to span generations-for now Iād say popular for all ages
A4: No. Fortnite is not the new Minecraft right now. I 100% think it could be. It is really up to @EpicGames and @MarkRein and co. to decide the direction they want to take. I think #FortniteEDU could and SHOULD be a thing and I am ready to go. #MinecraftEdu
A4~ #MinecraftEdu Personally I don't think anything could fully replace this game that I have come to love. There is just something special about it that I can't put my finger on. It is unique, However. since I have never played Fortnite it might be :o
For now Fortnite might end up being the new Pokemon Go (as in game of the moment), but thatās also a very different game because it requires getting outside #MinecraftEDU
I think its worth noting the VERY early Minecraft hype was survival mode, not creative, making it consumptive in intent and use to start. #MinecraftEdu
A1 itās open world and so much can be done with it. It allowed players imaginations to dictate gameplay so creation can happen in many levels. As a T I can adapt it to fit standards from almost all my curriculum #minecraftEDU
A4: So Fortnite is the biggest, most popular game, but can it inspire a generation of coders and programs, creative designers and artists the way #MinecraftEDU has?
A4: having not touched fortnite, i'd say no, at least in its current state. Minecraft has found such a perfect spot to sit in, and for fortnite to rival that, it will need a lot of work. The game is still very much designed around the combat aspect. #minecraftedu
@EpicGames could strip out the zombies and build an open world sandbox like Everquest: Landmark was. Beef up the building tools and features and it would be AMAZING. #MinecraftEdu
A2 itās free (mostly) cartoony enough for parents to let kids play a FPS, fast paced, with multiple aspects in motion, FPS, building and decreasing playing field, allows for several config of group or solo play, easy to play with friends #MinecraftEDU
A5: I saw an article about how Fortnite mobile is destroying the wifi at some schools and causing fight, but alternately Ashland University is offering scholarships for it #MinecraftEDU
A5: We made a tutorial town on the map for teachers as well as students, and are working on building up a pool of links between minecraft and museum-specific topics. #minecraftedu
We also batted around the idea of having a "Minecraft in the Museum" Teacher Camp in summer or September, but that's very much in the "wouldn't it be cool?" stage. I'm curious how much interest there'd be, though. #MinecraftEdu
A3 Minecraft hunger games pre date the fortnite gameplay so I wouldnāt say I e seen recreation of fortnite features in MC as such. Fortnite mechanics are limited for classroom application but I have used it as a topic for ela writing #MinecraftEDU

I don't know. š¤I can often find some cross-pollination between curriculum and games, but I'd have to play it to see the links, and I haaaaaaaaate PvP. It gives me way too much anxiety. #MinecraftEdu
A6~ #MinecraftEdu Again you can just call me Pickle, Moderator of the chat and a student, New England area and my most significant learning point has been all the information about Fortnite, might just have to try it for myself soon!
A4 I donāt think it will be the new Minecraft unless it changes enough to allow for many more types of game play. Most donāt like playing random teams so unless u play single player well I think many will drop it come summer unless they r playing w friends daily #MinecraftEDU
