A1 - in KS2 I find most of my discreet computing lessons are CS, and IT/DL are covered through writing or theme, depending on the genre or unit of work #caschat
Q1. Has the teaching of more creative topics such as digital imaging and animation suffered as a result of teachers placing more emphasis on the computing strand of the curriculum? How do we ensure a broad & balanced curriculum? @MrJDittman#caschat
#caschat A1, I still see quite a takeup for iPad courses & CPD that include green screen & stop motion animation in Hampshire. Real loser has been less popular Office skills such as spreadsheets in KS2 and keyboard / mouse skills in KS1 as everyone goes tablet
Hi, I am Megan and I am a student at UW-Platteville. I am studying Elementary Education with minors in Middle-Level Mathematics and Early Childhood. #caschat
A1. As a school we have tried to keep a balance of both. Opportunities to embed coding are included such as using Actionscript whilst teaching flash animation #caschat

#caschat A1, lots of interest in online safety in Primary not just because of internet safety Day. Lots of Primary schools transitioning from rules based Online Safety to pupils getting facts and creating their own rules. #SID2018
A1. I teach more creative stuff now, as the children spend more time in Word etc, in normal lessons. Digital arts is an important "in" for many less geeky children and often goes hand in hand with code. #caschat
A1: Teaching of these creative projects has improved with a wider range of apps to support them, but general IT skills have been lost with very few people teaching them #caschat
I think it’s the opposite for me, as a specialist I cover computer science comprehensively - basic ICT skills would be better covered through the rest of the curriculum, but not many class teachers are doing it/ #caschat
Sure that graphics & anim. have lost out. Lots of theory can be taught through graphics / web-design: binary, colour depth, hexadecimal, compression, standards, storage units, meta-data, copyright. Interesting that OfSTED guidance advises schools not to overlook IT #caschat A1

A1 I find it incredible that in 2018 there is no obligatory digital aspect in every discipline of the curriculum. It would deliver these varied and creative skills required. I'd also ban Powerpoint! #caschat

A1 I don’t think creativity in the curriculum has suffered, this is usually down to HODs and teachers, so if it has suffered it is a local issue...there are most certainly many places for this in the curriculum #caschat
I agree, I have been able to teach more advanced skills in Word etc than we used to, thanks to their increased use across the curriculum, so I concentrate on more media based IT skills above Y5. #caschat
A1: The other BIG issue with such creative projects is how the use of tech is implemented and assessed, what skills progression is there within the curriculum for IT creative skills~? for example do teachers know how to judge progression in movie making? #caschat
Hello, Mrs Grant in Sheffield. I worked with Y2s and they made a digital footprint out of paper, making links with all the devices they use and they learned about the online footprint they are leaving behind. #caschat#SID2018
A1. We use a lot of standard IT skills alongside their media projects. Onenote/Powerpoint/Sway and lots of fileshare collaborations when planning and presenting other work.
#caschat
Ironically though, Flash is often cited as a potential security issue. Also abandoned by Adobe now. Some qualifications still include frame-based animation & it would otherwise be an obvious contender. Unless you win lottery and get a site license for Apple Motion A1 #caschat
I fear they have. Computing coordinators / hods need to take a long hard look at their schemes of work and ensure all aspects of computing get taught. #caschat a1
Hi #caschat people. Neil from Aylesbury here. In a number of schools this week doing #SID2018 activities. Really pleased w staff session this evening and they enjoyed new @Baggiepr resources
#caschat A2, like anything that gets pupils to think for themselves. Here is one of mine around media sharing https://t.co/wzI7Jmwxw3 took me a long time to stop ramming rules on pupils and start listening. Made a real difference #SID2018
Keyframe animation is more relevant skill than frame by frame and is accessible in a lot of ways. We use Serif DP+ Older children are capable of key framing in Maya with good support - a prerigged asset would give great fun. Autodesk gives this for free for edu.
#caschat
A2 I still like the old Think You Know as a start point, then let the children lead any discussions from there, always suprises me what they know! #caschat
Adobe also now has character animator. Great fun.
Animate CC replaced Flash, and is HTML5 compliant. No need to worry about security any more.
#caschat
Yes, keyframing is great and applies to more sophisticated packages, including video editting, high-end 2d and 3d motion graphics. Is a piece of software really dead if lots of people still use it? #caschat
A2 enjoying the more recently produced resources focusing more on relationships, appropriate communication, etc #caschat “Play, like, share” has been well received at KS2
#caschat A2, ONline Safety resources for UKS2 https://t.co/yRpkYClVi9 Once pupils start sharing they are hard to stop. All kids are rightly risk takers but do they know how to manage and minimise risk. Got to chose for themselves #SID2018
A2 I really like @SWGfL_Official and @CommonSenseEd stuff. Solid curriculum covering all year groups. We teach it as part of PSHE to all year groups, not in Computing #CASChat

@clcsimon, @SWGfL_Official, @CommonSenseEd
A2. Love this video too fromk Austrailia which demonstrates the importance of knowing who you're talking to! Virtual Global Taskforce >> https://t.co/AXWehMo35R#caschat
A2 Lots out there. Even dug out the good old tree octopus last week in a piece on #fakenews . Had them all going! Sparked great debate over personal vs government responsibility for Internet content.
Loved this mornings 3-7 SID video.
#caschat
A2 with teaching Digital Literacy and esafety across the year, I feel that SID is loosing it's impact and point... Shouldn't we do it all the time, not just one day? #CASChat
I'd go for six projects a year, with a good spread of topics, but focussing on practical coding, working with data and digital media. I'd love to write something for this... I struggle to get excited by low level, binary and Boolean... #caschat a3
Me too. I think recent content is far less preachy, and more in line with recognising how teenagers and younger children actually use the net.
#caschat
A3 this is a recurring question that seems to have many different answers. Always a good session for a joint primary / secondary CAS hub meeting. #caschat
A:1 #caschat As a Special Ed teacher, I look at that research about what kids focus on: bright colors, quick movement, music, humor, cartoons... A plain old every day teacher doesn't stand a chance against a good video game or a tele tubby!
*Loads* of schools only have 1 hour! Is it possible to cover the whole NC well with the time these schools get? We get 2 x 50 min in Yr 7&8, then 3 X 50 min in Yr 9. It's still a squeeze, especially if students didn't cover much at KS2. #caschat A3
A4: Use free resources such as @scratch@TouchDevelop I have been surprised by how well my Y4 class used the turtle in touch develop, they preferred it and were more engaged than scratch! #caschat
I have a little thought that I try to teach by every day.
They will have thousands of maths and English lessons that they'll never remember.
Make sure they remember yours. They'll only get a few where they can make magic with code! #CASChat
A4 plenty of open source and free software out there that costs nothing to use; trick is to find the hook for your students. Could be games, could be environmental sensors... #CASChat
Massively late to #caschat tonight A4 - We use lots of competitions to break up the school year, tying them into the curriculum where we can - there are so many free resources out there too. @astro_pi was good fun and the students didn't need a pi to run it on.
A4: I find the children love scratch! kodu works for a little wow factor but to get collaboration and high level problem solving, cant beat it! #caschat
A4 my Y6 class last year loved our project based Pi curriculum, we brought in speakers and real life context which really hooked them. The teaching is easy after that! #caschat
A4 Got around the limited budget with #Ubuntu#Linux on recycled PCs and #RaspberryPi machines. Lots of free software, especially for programming and a break from the usual/ordinary school network... With the potential for superuser privileges! #caschat
