Welcome to #caschat Please introduce yourself and tell us what you did for Safer Internet Day #SID2018
  • Bob_Higham Feb 6 @ 3:00 PM EST
Really good day today @HorringerCourt with @adastralpark on advanced @RedfernElec & @Kitronik Crumble coding. Line following, obstacle avoidance and light following coding for y5 & y6. Used @janewaite Task, Design, Code, Run Code to good effect. A4 #caschat maybe.
  • Baggiepr Feb 6 @ 3:01 PM EST
#caschat on train to London this eve but queued a few tweets for my fav twitter chat
  • BitbyBot Feb 6 @ 3:01 PM EST
#caschat vs #FalconHeavyLaunch Might be less conversational come the end....
  • K0mputR Feb 6 @ 3:01 PM EST
Tick tock tick tock... And we're off! Hello from Devon - Phil #caschat
  • KJSICT Feb 6 @ 3:01 PM EST
Evening #caschat Kelvin in West Midlands! I lead two assemblies today for the whole school for #SID2018
  • dmount28 Feb 6 @ 3:01 PM EST
A1 - in KS2 I find most of my discreet computing lessons are CS, and IT/DL are covered through writing or theme, depending on the genre or unit of work #caschat
  • hengehall Feb 6 @ 3:02 PM EST
Hi, Ben in Lancashire - we focussed on posting opinions respectfully for #sid2018 #caschat

  • clcsimon - Moderator Feb 6 @ 3:04 PM EST
Q1. Has the teaching of more creative topics such as digital imaging and animation suffered as a result of teachers placing more emphasis on the computing strand of the curriculum? How do we ensure a broad & balanced curriculum? @MrJDittman #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Feb 6 @ 3:04 PM EST
Great topic Ben. So glad you could join us! #caschat
    In reply to @hengehall
  • FoleyTeach Feb 6 @ 3:04 PM EST

Hi, Erin Edgington from UW-Platteville joining the conversation to teach students about the power of twitter #caschat
  • Baggiepr Feb 6 @ 3:05 PM EST
#caschat A1, I still see quite a takeup for iPad courses & CPD that include green screen & stop motion animation in Hampshire. Real loser has been less popular Office skills such as spreadsheets in KS2 and keyboard / mouse skills in KS1 as everyone goes tablet
  • KJSICT Feb 6 @ 3:05 PM EST
A1: We try to ensure these are still taught, but still can be an issue, much easier when I taught computing to the whole school. #caschat
  • ferrellm27 Feb 6 @ 3:05 PM EST
Hi, I am Megan and I am a student at UW-Platteville. I am studying Elementary Education with minors in Middle-Level Mathematics and Early Childhood. #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Feb 6 @ 3:05 PM EST
So glad you could join us Al! #caschat
    In reply to @BitbyBot
  • hengehall Feb 6 @ 3:05 PM EST
A1 I think it’s more the fundamental things like typing and mouse skills. There’s a lack of coverage for word/excel/powerpoint etc too #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Feb 6 @ 3:06 PM EST
So glad you could join us Gabryelle! #caschat
    In reply to @Gabryellejones

    In reply to @DdR333, @imascientist
  • MrJKhalil Feb 6 @ 3:06 PM EST
A1. As a school we have tried to keep a balance of both. Opportunities to embed coding are included such as using Actionscript whilst teaching flash animation #caschat
  • K0mputR Feb 6 @ 3:06 PM EST
Safer Internet today: steel toe-cap boots. Can't be too careful... #caschat
  • clcsimon - Moderator Feb 6 @ 3:07 PM EST
Question 1 is live! Our first question comes courtesy of @MrJDittman #caschat
  • DdR333 Feb 6 @ 3:07 PM EST
A1 #caschat Think I'm keeping a healthy balance, just by weaving strands, using safety avatars in scratch animations and employing Lego WEDO
  • clcsimon - Moderator Feb 6 @ 3:07 PM EST
Hi Bob. So glad you could join us! #caschat
    In reply to @Bob_Higham

  • Baggiepr Feb 6 @ 3:09 PM EST
#caschat A1, lots of interest in online safety in Primary not just because of internet safety Day. Lots of Primary schools transitioning from rules based Online Safety to pupils getting facts and creating their own rules. #SID2018
  • BitbyBot Feb 6 @ 3:09 PM EST
A1. I teach more creative stuff now, as the children spend more time in Word etc, in normal lessons. Digital arts is an important "in" for many less geeky children and often goes hand in hand with code. #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon, @MrJDittman
  • BradleyDardis Feb 6 @ 3:09 PM EST
A1: Teaching of these creative projects has improved with a wider range of apps to support them, but general IT skills have been lost with very few people teaching them #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon, @MrJDittman
  • clcsimon - Moderator Feb 6 @ 3:09 PM EST
Hi Megan, so glad you could join us! #caschat
    In reply to @ferrellm27
  • hengehall Feb 6 @ 3:10 PM EST
I think it’s the opposite for me, as a specialist I cover computer science comprehensively - basic ICT skills would be better covered through the rest of the curriculum, but not many class teachers are doing it/ #caschat
    In reply to @dmount28
  • MrJKhalil Feb 6 @ 3:10 PM EST
A1 Alternate between a topic associated with computer science and digital IT skills every half term #caschat
  • MrJDittman Feb 6 @ 3:10 PM EST
Would love to join in with #caschat but have to mark 30 animation projects. As a former software dev, what do I know about animation?
    In reply to @clcsimon
  • K0mputR Feb 6 @ 3:10 PM EST
Sure that graphics & anim. have lost out. Lots of theory can be taught through graphics / web-design: binary, colour depth, hexadecimal, compression, standards, storage units, meta-data, copyright. Interesting that OfSTED guidance advises schools not to overlook IT #caschat A1
  • clcsimon - Moderator Feb 6 @ 3:11 PM EST
Good to hear it Ben! #caschat
    • hengehall Feb 6 @ 3:10 PM EST

  • hardistymark Feb 6 @ 3:11 PM EST
A1 I find it incredible that in 2018 there is no obligatory digital aspect in every discipline of the curriculum. It would deliver these varied and creative skills required. I'd also ban Powerpoint! #caschat
  • franklank Feb 6 @ 3:11 PM EST
Still teaching Adobe Flash. Most kids enjoy it. #CASChat

  • MsBClarke Feb 6 @ 3:12 PM EST
A1 I don’t think creativity in the curriculum has suffered, this is usually down to HODs and teachers, so if it has suffered it is a local issue...there are most certainly many places for this in the curriculum #caschat
  • K0mputR Feb 6 @ 3:12 PM EST
Er... Really? Thanks. No parents evening tonight. Hope all is well with you all. #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon, @Baggiepr
  • hengehall Feb 6 @ 3:13 PM EST
Book creator and explain everything are good apps for progression in digital skills and more useful than powerpoint #caschat
  • BitbyBot Feb 6 @ 3:13 PM EST
I agree, I have been able to teach more advanced skills in Word etc than we used to, thanks to their increased use across the curriculum, so I concentrate on more media based IT skills above Y5. #caschat
    In reply to @hengehall, @dmount28
  • PutneyHighCS Feb 6 @ 3:13 PM EST
Absolutely right. So many opportunities for use of #PowerPoint and #Excel in maths science and other subjects. #caschat
    In reply to @hengehall, @dmount28
  • KJSICT Feb 6 @ 3:13 PM EST
Had a great couple of lesson on book creator or making ebooks about Ancient Greek Gods! #caschat
    In reply to @hengehall
  • BradleyDardis Feb 6 @ 3:14 PM EST
A1: The other BIG issue with such creative projects is how the use of tech is implemented and assessed, what skills progression is there within the curriculum for IT creative skills~? for example do teachers know how to judge progression in movie making? #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon, @MrJDittman
  • MrsGrant_BATL Feb 6 @ 3:14 PM EST
Hello, Mrs Grant in Sheffield. I worked with Y2s and they made a digital footprint out of paper, making links with all the devices they use and they learned about the online footprint they are leaving behind. #caschat #SID2018

A1: Vicky, K-8 Tech Teacher from Southern California - I try to balance CS and other tech topics. #caschat
  • teslagirls2 Feb 6 @ 3:15 PM EST
A1 My school's biggest problem is we only have Chrome books and no budget to buy resources. This has meant more focus on CS strand #caschat
  • hengehall Feb 6 @ 3:15 PM EST
you can still access all the google apps, all free. #caschat
    In reply to @teslagirls2
  • BitbyBot Feb 6 @ 3:16 PM EST
A1. We use a lot of standard IT skills alongside their media projects. Onenote/Powerpoint/Sway and lots of fileshare collaborations when planning and presenting other work. #caschat
  • hardistymark Feb 6 @ 3:16 PM EST
    A1 Making games - cross curricular skills - english/maths/music/art/coding/science/business/esafety etc #caschat
  • K0mputR Feb 6 @ 3:17 PM EST
Ironically though, Flash is often cited as a potential security issue. Also abandoned by Adobe now. Some qualifications still include frame-based animation & it would otherwise be an obvious contender. Unless you win lottery and get a site license for Apple Motion A1 #caschat
    In reply to @franklank
  • mberry Feb 6 @ 3:17 PM EST
I fear they have. Computing coordinators / hods need to take a long hard look at their schemes of work and ensure all aspects of computing get taught. #caschat a1

  • computingchamps Feb 6 @ 3:17 PM EST
Hi #caschat people. Neil from Aylesbury here. In a number of schools this week doing #SID2018 activities. Really pleased w staff session this evening and they enjoyed new @Baggiepr resources

Q2. Today is Safer Internet Day #SID2018. What are your favourite eSafety resources? #caschat
  • mberry Feb 6 @ 3:18 PM EST
FWIW @SwitchedOnComp is 50-50 CS and IT, with DL embedded across all units. #caschat a1

It’s part of IT - ‘applications’ - getting useful stuff done with computers. It’s also covered by the NC e.g. at KS2 #caschat a1
    In reply to @MrJDittman, @clcsimon
  • Baggiepr Feb 6 @ 3:22 PM EST
#caschat A2, like anything that gets pupils to think for themselves. Here is one of mine around media sharing https://t.co/wzI7Jmwxw3 took me a long time to stop ramming rules on pupils and start listening. Made a real difference #SID2018
  • mberry Feb 6 @ 3:22 PM EST
Are you perhaps making the mistake of equating computing with computer science? You wouldn’t be the first... #caschat a1

Keyframe animation is more relevant skill than frame by frame and is accessible in a lot of ways. We use Serif DP+ Older children are capable of key framing in Maya with good support - a prerigged asset would give great fun. Autodesk gives this for free for edu. #caschat

Yes, keyframing is great and applies to more sophisticated packages, including video editting, high-end 2d and 3d motion graphics. Is a piece of software really dead if lots of people still use it? #caschat

A:1 #caschat As a Special Ed teacher, I look at that research about what kids focus on: bright colors, quick movement, music, humor, cartoons... A plain old every day teacher doesn't stand a chance against a good video game or a tele tubby!

*Loads* of schools only have 1 hour! Is it possible to cover the whole NC well with the time these schools get? We get 2 x 50 min in Yr 7&8, then 3 X 50 min in Yr 9. It's still a squeeze, especially if students didn't cover much at KS2. #caschat A3

I have a little thought that I try to teach by every day. They will have thousands of maths and English lessons that they'll never remember. Make sure they remember yours. They'll only get a few where they can make magic with code! #CASChat

Massively late to #caschat tonight A4 - We use lots of competitions to break up the school year, tying them into the curriculum where we can - there are so many free resources out there too. @astro_pi was good fun and the students didn't need a pi to run it on.
