Good evening! Welcome to tonight's #espechat. My name is Dan & I'll be your moderator for tonight's topic - "How to Fund Your PE Program." Just a reminder that we will use the Q1/A1 format tonight & be sure to use the hashtag #espechat for all your replies.
My name is Ashton Hawkins. I am currently still in college in my senior year I will graduate fall 2019. I am an English major I plan to be an English teacher and basketball coach. #espechat#sp19EDFB4338
A1) I get $250 per year, but my PTA is amazing! They help with Field Day and projects as well. I'm definitely interested to see what others budgets are...#espechat
A1 Mine is GREAT for consumable items. It’s 0 for items that aren’t “used up” within a few years. Dan, you now I don’t gif/meme so here’s my effort. 👍🏻👎🏻 #espechat
Q1) 350/year. Very blessed to have plenty of equipment. However, just like kids playing with the cardboard box instead of toys, I'm playing with cheap noodles instead of expensive items 👍 #espechat
A1) I have never actually seen or been told what my budget is. I feel like I am pretty lucky when it becomes to money and budgeting. If I can justify why I want something I can typically get get it...which I know is rare so I feel blessed in that capacity. #espechat
From being a college athlete here at my university and talking to my coach ours is LOW but even from high school athletes it was very low #espechat#Sp19EDFB4338
A1 - My district provides $300-$400 per school year. My PTO provides and additional $900 for PE supplies/needs and an additional $400 specifically for Recess Run incentives. #espechat
A1
I've been blessed to have supportive admin during my career. I've never had a set budget, which means I get a lot of yeses, but also a lot of nos. Doesn't always make sense.
#espechat
A1: We get roughly $450 from state, per teacher (we have 2 #physed Ts). Plus we usually profit around $1500 from Field Day. PTO usually provides about $100-$150 per teacher. And grant money.... #espechat
A1 We get $250 a yr but we can ask our district leads for PE or our principals for things. We can also write a grant for our school's town education foundation #espechat
Just want to make a correction to an earlier tweet. I know IL no longer has daily PE mandate, but it used to, which is why it is disappointing that there would be no $ for it.
#espechat
Victor from Virginia Teaching PE & Health in 3 Elementary Schools in Arlington K-5! Doing fantastic, just got back from a 2 mile run and ready to dive in!!! #espechat
A2: If I could get roughly $1,500 that would be perfect. At this point at my school I’ve accumulated enough basics and now I’m replacing and/or buying something new each year. #espechat
A2) I would love flexibility. I would like to present what I would find useful and within reason to improve my program and have my principal approve it. Not an exact number. #espechat
A2) Realistically I would like 400. Equipment is expensive, and I could get more accomplished if I had a class where all 60 Ss had their own equipment. I'm DEFINITELY HAPPY with what I have, but simple things like foam paddles are 60$ for 6...it gets outrageous #espechat
A2 I think I like to be able to request items instead of being on a budget. Most of the time my requested items cost more than what I would get from a budget. #tech items #espechat
The thing about not having a budget is that sometimes the answers make no sense. I once got approved for a $10k climbing wall through the PTO, but I later got denied $200 for basketballs. Gotta know the rules I'm playing with.
#espechat
A2) Realistically I would like about $3-5,000 a year, which I know sounds high to many of you here but that would include recess and probably would not all be used every year. Have to conscider space as well. #espechat
#espechat A2 I don't know what a reasonable $$ amount would be. IMO I would want the same amount as all other areas. If that is a set amount or a per pupil amount, I feel it should be equitable. My class is just as important as Math, Science, LA, etc
Lara Cox from AZ. I teach K-5 PE. Trying to catch up A1 No set budget but PTO is very willing to help out when needed
A2 enough to maintain what we have and then a little to purchase something new each year #espechat
#espechat I was pleasantly surprised to learn today that items I asked our Special Education director to purchase to use with our special education population and their inclusive classes, was approved. That was a great help in the “budget battles”.
A3 NYC DOE Office of School Wellness programs offers $1000 grant to schools with a wellness council. I got that last year and was able to fill n so much of what was missing from my closet #espechat
A3) I find my grant opportunities through non for profits. I feel I have been pretty blessed to bring some quality equipment to Jefferson through grants. My tip is to have a certain purpose, don’t just write for general equipment. #espechat
A3: All Of The Above. I’ve written grants funded by state organizations, local education programs, etc. Write grants, that’s the point. The more you write, the more you have a chance to score some. #espechat
I believe that schools whether they are elementary, intermediate, middle school, or even high school should have somewhere between $400-500 to spend on equipment that needs fixing. #espechat#PHED135
A3
I have no answer for this one since I am still in college but I’d love to hear how you all do so I know what to do in my years coming as a teacher.
What sources do you all use? #espechat#sp19EDFB4338
#espechat Q3 I found local non-profits with health goals were a great place to submit local grants about $500 dollars; also state associations have grants and then you present or write an article.
A3) Our District has an Education Foundation grant which is pretty fantastic. I got a new iPad through @DonorsChoose this year and it has been a game changer! Ive been applying every month for a @SpeedStacksInc grant...still hoping to get it 😉 #espechat
A3 I think best tip is to look far in distance, print questions & brainstorm answers for a few days, then organize kind of like persuasive essay... #espechat
#espechat A3 Good Sports, Action For Healthy Kids are good places to start with. I started writing for small amount grants, to Target, Walmart ($50-$100). I got used to writing grants and the follow up work that is required with grants. Then started venturing out for bigger amts
A3: I have found a lot of local hospitals have grant programs that schools can qualify for. Know your data points, and show how it will positively impact your school and the community. How can you involve parents, community partners, etc. They need to show their impact.
#espechat
I agree with @Brooks01CL@FUTP60 (Up to $4000/year) is fantastic. They have also done many @AdCapYOUth innovation challenges for students to win for their school. #espechat
In reply to
@BigTennPhysEd, @Brooks01CL, @FUTP60, @AdCapYOUth
A3) I’ve been successful in finding local non-profit organizations that link up with Donor’s Choose to provide funding for our entire school. Essentially this earmark money and anyone at my school can submit projects. It’s been a godsend! #espechat
A3) Look outside the #physed world. If you apply for typical #physed equipment for #physed specific grants, you are white noise. Think outside the box. Look to local non-profits and tech-specific grant offerings I’ve gotten $7,000 in grant funding by doing this #espechat
A3: My most successful grant funding has happened when I've connected other academic areas or had program goals that incorporated nutrition, outdoor ed, SEL...
#espechat
Having the support of my PTO has taken years of trust and relationship building. Showing that what I spend on directly benefits the most students. #espechat
I was turned down for any budget when attending conferences or items I've picked from catalogs. But I have been reimbursed for items I purchased at the Dollar Tree.. gotta use what you've got and be creative!#espechat
#espechat A3 Also, regarding thinking outside the box, think about in-kind donations for equipment. I was able to get free wgt equip, benches, racks when a baseball facility wanted to add more cages and was selling equip. I asked the owner and he thought it was a good idea.
Hi all, Andy from Chicago here. A1) My program budget is $5000/year split between 8 high school PE teachers teaching in weight rooms, pool and a gym. Some years it is plenty, but when big ticket items need replacement/maintaince....not nearly enough. #espechat
For ex:when I wanted balls for fitness drumming my grant program was 4 movement in the classroom. Ts use the exer balls in their classrooms throughout year &I get them back for my drum unit. Keeps me from having to in/deflate balls & allows them to stay in use all year #espechat
A3: My most successful grant funding has happened when I've connected other academic areas or had program goals that incorporated nutrition, outdoor ed, SEL...
#espechat
A3 I believe that you can find the most successful grants from non-profit organizations that focus primarily on health. They would be more then welcome to help. #espechat#PHED135
A4 I think it’s tough to throw one more fundraiser at the stakeholders. I still do the AHA one so I find it hard to just keep asking for money. Especially because the rest of the school does it too. #espechat
A4
When I was in high school we did a free throw fundraiser where however many free throws you made your family and friends could donate that much that went towards uniforms #espechat#Sp19EDFB4338
A4, the fundraising we do is over discounts at a nearby restaurant and we get a percentage of the money the restaurant brings in through the discounts #espechat
This is a huge avenue too! Local businesses like little leagues, bowling alleys, tennis centers, etc might be willing to donate used equipment that would serve its purpose in a PE program! #espechat
A4) This is our first year doing a running club. We will be putting on a mile run/5k in April to raise funds for PTA and physed. Fingers crossed it goes well. #espechat
Last year I ductaped myself to a wall. $1 = 1 foot of duct tape. This year I'm doing Field Day shirts to go along with our "Welcome to the Jungle" theme. #espechat
*pro-tip: put pool noodles behind your knees if you plan to duct tape yourself to a wall...I learned the hard way*
A4) Fundraising is something that we do well at my campus. I have one major fundraiser that I host per year as well as a few minor ones. I use the most beneficial as my major fundraiser and I experiment with the minor ones to find something new for the future. #espechat
A4) Our school does a cookie dough fundraiser every year and the money is usually used for large playground equipment or random purchases throughout the school, not necessarily #PhysEd equipment. #espechat
A4 I don’t really do fundraisers but I’ve gotten more comfortable asking local business owners to pitch in and provide donations to help out w my annual fitness night expenses #espechat
A4) I did JDRF too, @SaraWoodPE! Mostly though I ask parents to donate extra stuff they don't use anymore (shoes, basketballs, jump ropes, etc.) I sell it pretty good to them though, as I'm used to fighting for quality #physed 👍#espechat
A4: JRFH (once) & a local candle company were where I've done my fundraising. The candle one was great. I usually did it in November so people could buy them as gifts.
#espechat
A2) My department budget of $5000 is adequate for yearly replacement and small improvements. I would like it to take into consideration that this budget services all 2000 students in the building and spaces/equipment are used by sports teams and outside rental groups. #espechat
Field Day is an all day event-we ask that all Ss contribute $5 to cover the expenses + to provide funding to our PE program for new equipment & professional dev. Our main expenses are inflatables.....but we also purchase cups, gatorade, and popsicles. Net is about $1500 #espechat
A4 I don’tdo fundraisers bc our school district only wants a couple big causes and then if we want something we’re supposed to ask PTO or Education Foundation #espechat
#espechat A4 Maybe 5 yrs ago I conducted a winter quarter carnival to give Ss something to do in the middle of winter. Every game was 25 cents, in the gym and prizes were things I collected and begged for from 5K races I ran in a year
Field Day is an all day event-we ask that all Ss contribute $5 to cover the expenses + to provide funding to our PE program for new equipment & professional dev. Our main expenses are inflatables.....but we also purchase cups, gatorade, and popsicles. Net is about $1500 #espechat
I have done fundraising for many things in life. I have sold raffle tickets to the community for my cub scouts. I have done yard sales to give my unwanted belongings to others in my community. I have done 5k's for people with diseases. Also many more things. #espechat#PHED135
That was how I got my climbing wall. I asked the PTO every year. One year it just so happened they had nothing major to buy, but were looking to pad the bank account. I got principal on board first, and it was easy from there. Like mentioned earlier, build that trust.
#espechat
At my high school, we had parents that would host fundraisers as well. It was a good way to vouch for the PE program we had and raise money for new equipment #espechat
A3) Been most successful writing grants from "Friends of" school group. They have skin in the game as their kids directly benefit. This year I built and launched an urban adventure education program. They loved the idea for the school and their kids and made it happen. #espechat
Hey @BigTennPhysEd 👋🏼 & #ESPEchat! My name is Stephanie and I’m a ms #physed teacher in Southern California (grades 7/8). Sorry I’m a bit late, trying to leave everything ready for my sub while I’m at @CAHPERD#CAHPERD19
A4 I don't like to do the traditional fundraising of selling stuff..my own kids are always bringing stuff home from school, scouts and their sports. Its just too much. We've talked about a family run or bike event and proceeds going to PE program #espechat
We also have Ss plant seeds in milk cartons and grow until seedlings, then sell them at our Bike Rodeo for $3-$ each. Nice return on the minimal investment. Plus a great, practical project. #espechat
A4 I don’t really do fundraisers but I’ve gotten more comfortable asking local business owners to pitch in and provide donations to help out w my annual fitness night expenses #espechat
A5: I prefer fundraisers. I usually get more than I do with a grant, and it is not something I have to track and report all year long like with a grant.
#espechat
A5) Grants for sure! So many more opportunities. Like @physedreview said the more you apply the better chance you get of scoring one. Can only hold so many fundraisers. #espechat
A5) to me it seems a grant would be the more appealing of the two, but fundraising has less limits and has less hoops to jump through. #espechat#PHED135
A5. I have always had better lucky with fundraising yet most of the times it was for a different cause. Good luck with fund runs and jump a thons #espechat
A5) fundraisers are usually more fun because the school community gets involved. However, grants don’t put pressure on those involved to raise money or make anyone feel bad if they can’t contribute. Grants take a little more work, but can be more fruitful. #espechat
A4 This year our PTO used Boosterthon Fun Run $ to build us a fantastic Covered Outdoor Learning Space! I am so excited as I have waited 29 years for this project!! Completion date is early May🙌🏻 #espechat
#espechat A5 for me grants were a better way of getting money for my program. I would use the data, particularly fitnessgram data and compare it to academic performance showing that the students who score better in fitnessgram would tend to have the higher scores
A5) I feel like i prefer fundraisers because it isn't tedious work. You definitely see the fruit of your labor, and more often than not they're a riot to organize and do. But Grant's are much less time consuming #espechat
A1 At the middle school level our budget is what we sell from our #physed clothes so it just depends. We also have certain expenses that happen every year but the numbers always fluctuate (ie. T&F ribbons, ACE shirts, mile run shirts, otter pops, etc.) #ESPEchat
A5: Grant writing: though it seems scary, it seems like a lot less work and parts. But fund raising can bring a lot of people together for a huge buy-in of the program. #espechat
A2 Realistically, it’s about $2,000– however there are years where we go big like last year and our purchase of the chip timing system 🏃🏽♀️ 🏃🏽 #ESPEchat
Yeah, the food items were just flat out unhealthy. Not the direction we wanted to go. I have never really done a fundraiser because my principal doesn't like them. It just doesn't really work in that community. #espechat
Sorry for jumping in, but I am very curious. re: grants - How many of you are in states whose state organization offers grants? Do any of you not know for sure if your state offers grants? #espechat
A3 I must say I haven’t had much success with our local grants (the ones you get via email through your district). Branch out to specific equipment organizations, state organizations and commercial stores such as Target for example! 1/2 #ESPEchat
Alabama (ASAHPERD) doesn't offer grants currently, although when we had our relationship w/ AHA there were a few JRFH/HFH heart grants available. #espechat
A6 I know my districtgot about $1500 from using SHAPE America online request but I didn’t ask bc my department couldn’t decide what they’d want most 🙄#espechat
A3 Specifying not only how it will help you and your teaching but also the students, their families possibly (bringing the learning home) and even the community (how will the face of PA look in the neighborhood because of it) 2/2 #ESPEchat
It sounds like we still have a lot of work to do with ESSA funds reaching #physed#healthed programs. State SHAPE/AHPERD members out there...let's roll up our sleeves.
Question 7 is coming up...
#espechat
A4 The only fundraising we help put on is our annual PTA Turkey Trot/Family Fun Run. The problem we run into is scheduling when to do this because it can’t overlap with any fundraising that is happening on campus...there’s usually always something. It makes it seem 1/2 #ESPEchat
