Hi Courtney here K T, WA!
Hello Courtney! Glad to see you!

Hey I'm so excited to be here! My favorite scent is vanilla!
Hi Christine! Seems that my tweet isn’t showing up for me, but obv. is for others. Might make tonight
I see you on the Tweetdeck, girl!
Hi Hannah! Fall is always good, right?
Hi everyone! Kathleen from Edmonton. I enjoy many of the smells from Saje! Mmmmmm.
My first ! My favorite smell is burning leaves, freshly mowed grass and clean laundry!
Amy here, multitasking btwn & . Fave smell: old books, summer camp, citrus.
Yep! I’ve used it for years, but tonight it’s acting perspicuity I suppose.
yes it is! I am so glad we are finally approaching fall!
my fav smell is bed sheets dried outside. :)
Hi Taylor! Welcome to Vanilla is always a good homey scent, isn’t it?
Hello Kathleen! I confess I do not know this Saje…
Nothing like clean laundry, especially sheets on the clothesline!
I would be SO NERVOUS if I had to do a debate like this!
Summer camp has it’s own distinct smell, right? Cabins, woods and campfires all rolled into one
It's a store that sells natural products, but mostly essential oils for nebulizers! So delicious.
.- are you the host tonight?
YES! Love that smell! I’ll hang sheets out long into fall and early spring just for it
Ooo! I’ll bet that does smell divine!
Sugar pines! Sunshine! Horses! Campfire!
Hi all. Meg from Chicago. Favorite scent is breeze from the oceans & lakes. I'll try to pay attention, but watching the debate.
Especially against that man (he who must not be named)
I might add the smell of baseball in OCTOBER, right?
I am glad to have a little distraction!
in PEI, the five senses are our science curriculum, but I try to incorporate them into all areas. What about you & science?
Sure! We get 2 at our school, 15 in AM 20 in PM
help a sister out! Let her know about recess at your school https://t.co/rJbaOb3gjK
- I teach all day K & trying to take inventory of how many recesses most all day K Ss get. Am I allowed to ask that here?
Alberta also base our program of studies on exploring through the senses Try to make our explorations authentic
I have two plus an extra if wanted at end of day.
If you have any pics of Ks exploring w/5 senses, feel free to post tonight!
Two for my all day kinders. 10-15 minutes in the AM, 30 in the PM https://t.co/0JTfLYyaqe

I love science! I am hoping to be a kindergarten teacher once I graduate and would love to incorporate as much science as I can
You’re speaking my language!
Hello ! Liane from Abbotsford BC the Canada. I'm trying to multitask by tweeting while I workout. We'll see how this goes....
No pressure liane! Tweet in between reps, lol!
I am currently a student studying el ed, and I am interested in teaching kindergarten! I am here observing
Favourite smell? Oh I always loved my moms perfume. It smells like mom and home.
You’re among some of the best K teachers around Hannah! Glad to have you! plus we like exclamation marks...
stationary bike tonight. Yikes!
Me too! I'm a sophomore at NC State.
I am exciting to be here!!
first thing I saw when I opened Twitter tonight was a link to the debate, thank goodness for !
isn’t it interesting how smell brings back memories? A smell that always reminds me of K is paper mache. I’m instantly 5 yrs old
my cousin attends NC state! I am a sophomore at IUPUI in Indianapolis, Indiana!!
Right? Let sanity rule tonight!
hold on… I’ll find it and retweet it
I like it when parents make scented play dough for class. Lavender, orange or peppermint oils are lovely!
here’s Q1 https://t.co/R0q7hS8z0W

Sorry I'm not around tonight ! Home renos & OT plans for tomorrow to do. Hopefully next week!
Prince Edward Island- tiniest province in Canada!
- Prince Edward Island schools- also home to a bomb scare last week. Fun never ends!
Yes! This is one of my favorite activities each year! 💜
Q1) I use all but taste in science. I use the 5 senses to teach about how we learn w/ science
New curriculum in BC this year, and I'm pretty sure senses is a part. Regardless, the senses are a HUGR part of kinder.
I'm loving your Thank you for sharing!
You are the awesome-est sharer of excellence stuff
I had a couple bomb scares at my school growing up :(
A1: Find it hard to teach senses as a study when we need all senses all the time. Rather, incorporate use of senses into all.
We do taste in Friday's. Borrowed 's Food Friday idea. This week is "yellow" food for our yellow investigation.
Q2: Sometimes we think of science as only existing during a specific time of day. How do you incorporate it into your schedule?
Oh how I want to answer this one but I have 8 minutes left!!
You answer it when you can liane!
A2 If we are truly curious inquirers, then we are thinking like scientists all day long
I do lessons in which Ss test each sense. I.E. taste something salty/sweet/bitter/sour & graph our favorite flaver
So distracted by right now. Need to catch up on . Hi, Jola from Oklahoma
I completely agree with ! Anytime is a good time for science :D
Like "What do you notice?" "What are you wondering?"
I love it when people agree with me! ;-)
No worries! Can’t lie- the Cubs game is on in the background here ;)
A2b) We ask ourselves questions as readers. NF books help us answer our Qs
No one blames you! I've got a corgi puppy distracting me.
A2- I never have a set science block & integrate it with my literacy block. We read a book that relates to the topic& write too!
A1 We adopted new standards last year. No specific curriculum & tbh, not much time dedicated to sci. Trying to fix that this yr.
Confession: I used to think of science as a block of time. Once I began to integrate it, it became a “living” thing to me
This Thurs we are using taste to decide which color of apple tastes best.
It’s so easy to get caught up in reading and writing, isn’t it?
Do you have a science centre during centres? I used to do this
One of my favourite fall activities! We’ll be doing that in Oct. Plus making apple sauce
I struggle to integrate b/c my brain thinks in blocks of time. Tips to jump this hurdle?
Does anyone here do science journals? https://t.co/E1F0QzgGhB
It’s so easy to get caught up in reading and writing, isn’t it?
My senses are getting a workout right now, grandsons just went outside, wind, smell of lake & grass, sounds of kids, dogs, waves
A2 As of now, we focus on sci on Fridays, as apart of our Fun Friday
I do have a science centre- it’s one of my favourites. My classroom is “open” kids go from 1 to another at their whim
Yes. they're district provided
Sure do! It’s a great way to bridge literacy and science
I decided to call it the discovery centre and kids have choice to go as well. It's always well visited
Dog thinks he's crazy, rolled down the hill with head & feet in buckets, risky play, almost dark https://t.co/oVqkkI61ZI
We have science center that changes each week based on our objectives that week. Last week all 5 senses stuff, this week weather
My sand table is there, it’s right by my art area, and blocks are next door. I try to make it all flow 1 to another
I have a sand table that sometimes gets water or snow or ice too
the biggest aha moment was me realizing that our 5 senses naturally incorporate themselves into our day.
yes, it is, especially with high admin expectations
I have an imagination station which is an option during choice time. Right now we have magnetism tools
when writing, we use our senses in descriptive writing. In math we might have a 3d shape bag to guess what shape it is
Grade 3 science is a lot more separated but we go outside as much as possible & hands on in class, then draw/read/write
in my science centre I always have magnets, sand, rocks, weights, etc. available. Every day of the year
We have personal writing journals and we have a class journal during our life cycle inquiry
Writing about our senses is powerful. What did U see on our walk? What did u hear? What did u smell? DON’T TASTE!
And I always have paper and pencils in all our centres to integrate the literacy
Nice! Had a chat with an art T who uses sketchbooks to document learning; think science journals similar.
Always a chance to write with words and pictures! https://t.co/9Ev4NFP8rW
And I always have paper and pencils in all our centres to integrate the literacy
As a pre-service teacher, I would love to find ways to incorporate hands-on activities and outdoor activities!
I think the 5 senses is such an effective framework for any subject!
It really is. It’s why I like to introduce at the beg of the year. Then we can branch off almost anywhere
I think it is how we make sense of our world, no?
at the daycare/preschool I work at, we have a science center the kids can go to anytime they want!
playdough, magnets, paper, cardboard, noodles, marshmallows, tp rollls, all provide hands on 4 Ss.
We made little field notebooks & went outside to sketch structures, next day used sketches to create labelled drawings
That's exactly how scientists work in the field! So authentic!
Q3(?): Using our 5 senses sometimes takes concentration- how do you encourage this with your class?
I agree. but as Ts I think we have 2 teach explicitly what we (adults) already know. Outloud thinking
In the Preschool that I have my field experience in, there is a discovery center. The kids love it!
Yup. I agree. That's modelling.
A3: Not only for science related activities, but I am constantly modeling out loud how I think, question, rethink, and wonder.
https://t.co/e8dVncKr31
A3: Not only for science related activities, but I am constantly modeling out loud how I think, question, rethink, and wonder.
A3) I do the same activity w/ each sense, if possible
Oh thank you for the ideas! I will have to remember those when I am in the classroom!
having a middle aged moment- what’s the Reggio term for putting out an activity for students? Is it invitation?
A provocation. 😄 https://t.co/qp7rsL7lct
having a middle aged moment- what’s the Reggio term for putting out an activity for students? Is it invitation?
In , we call it a provocation too!
A3: I actually am starting with at things in our world. Lots of modelling, lots of talking, lots of acceptance.
A3: I find setting out a natural provocation is a great way to begin thinking about our 5 senses
But I like the idea of an invitation! Come and see!
Love this Liane! Such an important concept https://t.co/WhRn6X0ckv
A3: I actually am starting with at things in our world. Lots of modelling, lots of talking, lots of acceptance.
A provocative invitation perhaps?
Ha ha! I get what you mean. May need to be re-branded. . .
That is a great way to model to the students how to think! I will have to remember this when I am in the classroom!
Keeping kids interested in anything is a challenge in itself! But the activity should be engaging, interactive and appropriate
A3: The provocations are great. But right now a lot of ours are focussing on muscle development. Adding to them every day!
1 thing I might do is put a birds nest on a table along w/magnifying glasses, paper, and pencils let them look and draw
So much of my day is thinking out loud with young children! Helps to make connections and meaning
modeling thinking is SO impt. One of the most impt skills 2 model in K
Try it in a French immersion program like I teach in, it's just a bunch of kids looking at you going "whaaaaat?" 🙊
Have a good evening everyone! 😄 Thanks to for moderating. 🍂
Every week we go on a nature walk, then we write about what we observed. It gets us to think deeper, enriches the experience
There's some sensory exploration with a small boy & a can of root beer in my living room right now
One year we made a list of everything Ks were: scientists, chefs, teachers, photographers, more. It was fun.
OK, look at that time! For you on the west coast, your night is just getting started. Here on the east coast we’re ready for bed
