Welcome to #scitlap tonight. I am so excited to moderate, share, and learn with all of you! Let's introduce ourselves. . .who are you, where are you from? #expeditionschnekser
A1: I was just in Galapagos 10 days ago studying endemic species. Being a teacher, mother, and wife keep me from the field #scitlap#expeditionschnekser
A1 Part 2 I don't know what stops me....honestly, most kids don't like it from my experience. They are not from a generation of playing outside. #scitlap
A1 wow have not been in the (research) field for... well too long to mention due to the gig, I do appreciate nature and help conserve resources by volunteering time, and I give Ss opportunities to explore nature and collect organisms during the fourth nine weeks #scitlap
The Chestnut Club works along side The American Chestnut Foundation to help breed a regionally adapted , blight-resistant American chestnut tree. We pollinate, plant, inoculate trees and also manage land at a nearby mountain. #scitlap
A2: I bring students into the field to complete biodiversity surveys, investigate water quality measurements, and maintain gardens. I set up field simulations in my lab when I cannot bring them to an authentic experience. #scitlap#expeditionschnekserhttps://t.co/E3f9V5S97G
A2: I teach physical science. We bring the field to them with Rube Goldberg machines. We also visit our local cemet company and see tons of chem connections. #scitlap
I was thinking the same thing. The upfront cost for the probes is higher but should last for many years. The wet chem aspect of the kits has its own charm tho. #scitlap
A3: I would like to get to Honduras with @MyFrogCroaked but really, I just want to be in the field making a difference. I want to be able to scale these experiences for my Ss so they know this IS a thing that happens in the world of science #scitlap#expeditionschnekser
A3 Ooooh, cool question. Would love to visit a volcano, Monarch sanctuary, snorkeling coral reef. Thinking big here, but I love anything outside.
Ooh, those bioluminescent jellyfish...... #scitlap
A3 realistically go to a state university and see the current research being done in the fields of biochemistry, nanotechnology, molecular spectroscopy DREAM travel to Japan or Australia and learn their methods for teaching science, #scitlap
A4: I want to bring my students to the George Washington National Forest to complete biodiversity surveys and partner with @VDGIF for authentic data collection #scitlap#expeditionschnekser
What's stopping me is the sun goes down at about 4:30pm and wrestling practice goes till 4pm (I coach). My daily hike is walking my dogs in the morning. I'm in upstate NY. #scitlap
A4 Going off topic here, but would like to develop a more standard safety contract that includes outside field work, then do more outside so it is part of the norm. #scitlap
A4 this year our team took Ss to a career fair which included universities, colleges, aviation industries, STEM, Ag, auto tech, and the kids eyes and minds were like... #scitlap
We already have something written up, but we have a lengthy, separate contract from Flinn Sci. Would like to merge and si,Pliny. It is a project for my department.@#scitlap
I'm still brainstorming outside lesson ideas for the spring. Kids don't know much about living things. I only see lab kids 2 days of a six day cycle so it limits what we can do. #scitlap
A5) I would love to teach up with a @USGS or @USFWS because most of my standards are in this area. I do have a relationship with @USNavy & some engineers from @NASA#scitlap
A4) I am able to take them to UC Berkeley ad they get to tour labs and research facilities. I would love to take them out to newish outdoor learning facility to learn how to survey and take samples, population study.
A3) I would like to do some fieldwork in the Sedona or Flagstaff for geology study or Volcanoes in Hawaii. Also soil samples in my own county and measuring drought and remaining aquifers.
A2) not many field experiences teaching on a rural military installation and transportation expensive. However my @Amplify curriculum does a good job virtually with research & application.
A1) I have spent almost every summer the last 25 years at an institute. Some are 3 weeks and others a week somewhere in the country. Now slowing down due to caregiving duties. I’ve had some amazing experiences.
