We are SO honored to @ClassDojo 's @CaitClassDojo with us for #RCSTechChat tonight! This is going to be an awesome chat! Get your typing fingers ready & make sure you look out for her tweets. Q1/A1 format and don't forget the hashtag!
It's all yours Caitlin!
So excited to get to guest host, thanks to my #edtech buddy @smithstrcs π I used to teach 2nd and 4th and am now living the dream with ClassDojo... what do you teach? #RCSTechChat
I like to post to Class Story: pictures and videos from in class activities to field trips allows EVERY parent to be a part of their studentβs school day πΈ #RCSTechChat
A1- I give parents a window into our school as the tech coach I post all important events, dates, and then recaps into school story. I do not have a classroom, I rep the whole school. #RCSTechChat
A1. I use a smore page to help keep my parents up to date on what is going on in the classroom. I also use @ClassDojo to send out messages and stay connected. I would love to explore class stories more!
#rcstechchat
Q1/A1 I am just starting Dojo this year, but I have posted some pictures on the class story and do send out messages letting parents know what is happening. #RCSTechChat
A1- I am so blessed to also be at 2 schools as tech coach and they are both @ClassDojo school wide. It has been the best thing we have done for parent involvement. #RCSTechChat
It sounds like so many of you already invite parents "into" your classroom digitally, which is amazing! How powerful for that parent with 2 jobs and no time to volunteer to still feel a part of your classroom community β€οΈ #RCSTechChat
Q1 A1 I do not think as a High school teacher we do a great job of giving families involvement into the classroom. We try with our classroom pages and with our inow accounts, but much of it depends on parent usage. #RCSTechChat

A1 As an ESL teacher, the language barrier is a challenge in communicating with parents. Looking forward to getting some ideas from this Tech Chat and learning how Class Dojo can help. #rcstechchat
Did you know that captions and Messaging is all automatically translated for any parent whose language is set to their preferred language? π #RCSTechchat

Q2/A2: You could send a dojo message to all of your parents with a daily question to discuss with their child at the dinner table, in the car, etc. #rcstechchat
A2 Upload pics of anchor charts, docs, even give students the stage and allow them to βteachβ via video & post to Class Story, allowing families to refresh on skills they maybe havenβt practiced since they were in 4th grade AND start SPECIFIC conversations at home π #RCSTechChat
A2- I use both class stories and individual stories to update parents on what/how their child is doing in class. Also, I encourage the children to talk to their parents about the work that goes home in their folders
#rcstechchat
A2 I think this is where social media makes a huge difference. For example, today I didnβt ask my son what he did today. I asked him about the animals they visited in sci class. #rcstechchat
A2. I always put what we are talking about and some of the activities we are doing in the classroom in my newsletter so parents can ask more specific questions.
#rcstechchat
Q2/A2: You could send a dojo message to all of your parents with a daily question to discuss with their child at the dinner table, in the car, etc. #rcstechchat
A2 Every day I use a hastag that tells about our class lesson for the day. Kids copy in their agendas. Parents know what the hadtag is gor. I also do a checkup evety frw weeks with a quiz. #rcstechchat
Q2 The only way to let parents know somewhat with gen. music, with just seeing once a week, is to write in agenda in a certain area what we will be discussing and learning.
#rcstechchat
As a former classroom teacher where half of my class was ESL, I can tell you that @ClassDojo was a life saver communicating with those parents! #rcstechchat
A1 As an ESL teacher, the language barrier is a challenge in communicating with parents. Looking forward to getting some ideas from this Tech Chat and learning how Class Dojo can help. #rcstechchat
A2 we write reflections throughout the day about what we have learned. Iβm wondering if those could be shared on ClassDojo with parents. #rcstechchat
A1: As a coach, my main vehicle is the school website. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how effective it is since it functions as a Web 1.0 tool. No opportunity for parent feeback. =( #rcstechchat
Q2/A2 I sometimes rehearse this with the students...."so when your parents ask what you did today, what would you say?" I also use my school webpage to list the topics & work for the day. #RCSTechChat
Q2/A2 we have reflection time and reflection journals to write about things we learned today, we also have Tuesday Taxiβs that go home every Tuesday to see their work #rcstechchat
A2- If you use class story you could have students take turns posting what they did during the day so parents would be able 2 see pics/ videos. If you don't use that tool then you could tweet or blog. The bottom line is that parents really do want to know what goes on #RCSTechChat
A2 I think this is where social media makes a huge difference. For example, today I didnβt ask my son what he did today. I asked him about the animals they visited in sci class. #rcstechchat
A2 I think a class newsletter that details the weekly syllabus would be very beneficial to the parents. I can also see where twitter and or remind app might be useful. #RCSTechChat
I like this! Reflection time and journal writing and so important to our young learners. I like to write back to my students in their journals and they LOVE IT! #RCSTechChat
Q2 The only way to let parents know somewhat with gen. music, with just seeing once a week, is to write in agenda in a certain area what we will be discussing and learning.
#rcstechchat
A2 we write reflections throughout the day about what we have learned. Iβm wondering if those could be shared on ClassDojo with parents. #rcstechchat
My parents have told me that our Student Story and Class Story posts as well as tracking their behavior on @ClassDojo have eliminated this dreaded conversation. Instead: "I saw what you did at school today! Tell me more about it!" #RCSTechChat
A2 My parents have told me that our Student Story and Class Story posts as well as tracking behavior on @ClassDojo have eliminated this dreaded conversation. Instead: "I saw what you did at school today! Tell me more about it!" #RCSTechChat
I sent a pic of a writing prompt to parents the other day and they seemed to really appreciate see and actual assignment that we were working on. #rcstechchat
Are you at a RC school? Your tech coach can give you a lot of information or Mrs. Smith @smithstrcs or myself can too! Its AWESOME and free!!!! #RCSTechChat
A3 Post to School Story! Every connected family will instantly feel connected/see the pic or vid PLUS you get to see HOW MANY families have seen and how many TRANSLATED your post (thatβs a lot of useful info right there) π #RCSTechChat
A3- I created a youtube channel for my parents for the school. We video all events and meeting. Parents can watch the videos on their own time so they aren't missing out when they can't be present. #RCSTechChat
A3 Good Questions! Our school does a great job of using YouTube to televise some events on live stream and record some events and leave on a channel for parents. Social media is also a valuable outlet. #RCSTechChat
A3 In our district, admin can do a call out to families. As teachers, we can post to school story so that everyone connected to our school is in the know ;-) #rcstechchat
Q3/A3: Our whole school uses Dojo, so even our school secretary posts things to our school story, including those events parents may have to miss. #rcstechchat
A3: Pictures, videos, and more pictures!! Taking pics of students, products, and even the hallways can go along way to make parents feel they are βthere!β #rcstechchat
A3
Let them know I appreciate them. Whatever they do from a phone call, a note, sending a pack of paper. I want them to feel welcomed and important. #RCSTechChat
A3 I send out news to every student and parent in all my classes through Jupiter. All parents have access to the information on our school website. We have a great STS! #rcstechchat

A3
Let them know I appreciate them. Whatever they do from a phone call, a note, sending a pack of paper. I want them to feel welcomed and important. #RCSTechChat
A3: #rcstechchat good question! School wide is hard. Keeping in contact in a variety of ways, such as phone calls, emails, @ClassDojo, and paper flyers. I think that our school Twitter does a great job of showing how certain events went as well! :)
A3- Communication is key. Giving consistent updates, even if they can't make it is so helpful. Also using multiple forms of communication- emails, notes, dojo, and phone calls.
#rcstechchat
A3 By keeping an open dialogue with all parents and contacting them not only when their child has done bad things but also when they do good things. #rcstechchat
A3: I definitely feel as though Class Dojo can fill in the gaps for parents that cannot be involved as much! We have school wide dojo as well! #RCSTechChat
Q3/A3 By keeping Dojo and my classroom webpage up to date. I also like how all teachers can post on the school story. Students and parents can look anytime. Our principal will also send out phone messages. #RCSTechChat
Yes, we love seeing how many have viewed our posts and the comments- parents have been able to ask quick questions and everyone can see the answer. Not sure how to see the translation part though.. I'll have to check on that. #rcstechchat
I think this is important yet as teachers we struggle to find the time to do this. So much goes back to relationships! Very good idea here! #RCSTechChat
A3 By keeping an open dialogue with all parents and contacting them not only when their child has done bad things but also when they do good things. #rcstechchat
A3 this one is tough! We do not use class dojo school wide, so Iβm not sure about the school story. I would think the only current way we connect school wide would be school website/ phone calls. #rcstechchat
A3 A teacher has to be intentional about looking for ways to connect with parents - technology is providing us with many more options for communication than we've ever had before.
#rcstechchat
A3: I definitely feel as though Class Dojo can fill in the gaps for parents that cannot be involved as much! We have school wide dojo as well! #RCSTechChat
I'd definitely encourage each of you to consider going School-wide with ClassDojo (but you know I'm biased π) Pin this for later: https://t.co/4qVFXbKvj4#RCSTechChat
A3: I think this an area for refinement in most large districts. So many complex needs tend to restrict districts to operating in a reactive bubble of isolation. #rcstechchat

A3 Our school does an AMAZING job of offering so many different events and opportunities for all families to attend and get connected. Of course, Dojo also connects us all everyday and unites us in a common goal of supporting our students! #RCSTechChat
A4: YES- love this question! As a School Counselor, we focus on meeting our students' academic, social/emotional, and career needs in a variety of ways- school-wide events, lessons, small groups, individual #rcstechchat
A4: #rcstechchat Gosh, this is probably not what you meant, but I go to @Pinterest to find daily messages/tasks that keep my students talking & sharing. The great ones help them to understand the importance of being kind. #lifeskills
A4. I use class dojo to help with #SocialEmotionalLearning growth mindset, empathy, perseverance, mindfulness. My students absolutely love the videos and the activities that go with it! the other day we did mindful movement!
#rcstechchat
School Counselors have my β€οΈ Shout out to my old school's Counselor Mrs. Stratton who helped my kiddos in SO many ways. Can't have a happy & thriving school without em' #RCSTechChat

My parents and students enjoy my use of digital learning through the websites I make using Smore Flyers. My students that need reinforcements, centers, absent work, intervention, or enrichment can click on the link I send them, powerful blended learning! #rcstechchat
A4. I use class dojo to help with #SocialEmotionalLearning growth mindset, empathy, perseverance, mindfulness. My students absolutely love the videos and the activities that go with it! the other day we did mindful movement!
#rcstechchat
A4- I teach theatre, so I am blessed with a subject where the students interact more than others. I REALLY get to see the different ways my students work. It takes time, but I think just talking and joking with the kids is worth it! #RCSTechChat

Now more than ever #SEL is SO important to fit in whether it's a whole lesson, or fitting it in between transitions, thank goodness for the short to long videos and activities at https://t.co/qaQ9Yzm4kS π #RCSTechChat
A4 I am interested in learning about some more resources in this area. I use the dojo videos sometimes, but my students could definitely use some other resources as well.
#rcstechchat

Hi! I saw the dojochat template in my feed and I'm like...is it Weds.? π Anyway, @smithstrcs I love the idea of including your school Ts in a chat & ft. a SUPER special guest @CaitClassDojo π‘ Gets my wheels turning. Enjoy your chat! #lurking#rcstechchat#thisisNOTdojochat
A4 I used the Big Ideas videos from CD, BUT...I would love to see SEL become more of an emphasis in schools. The Ss need it now more than ever! #rcstechchat
A4. I use class dojo to help with #SocialEmotionalLearning growth mindset, empathy, perseverance, mindfulness. My students absolutely love the videos and the activities that go with it! the other day we did mindful movement!
#rcstechchat
Q4/A4 With my middle schoolers, it's a lot of conversation and modeling. Lot's of talk also about growth mindset....it's OK to make mistakes! #RCSTechChat
A4: our school uses the Quantum Learning (@qleducation)curriculum and their 8 character keys. We also talk a lot about Growth Mindset and many teachers use the Dojo videos. #rcstechchat
A4 I think by communicating the culture you want in your classroom and actively taking part in those discussion will help. I will start using the dojo videos! #rcstechchat
Q4 I am learning about some great resources on chat with everyone tonight. I will also explore DoJo to see if that is something I can use.
#rcstechchat
A4. I use class dojo to help with #SocialEmotionalLearning growth mindset, empathy, perseverance, mindfulness. My students absolutely love the videos and the activities that go with it! the other day we did mindful movement!
#rcstechchat
A4 I typically do a read aloud that has to do with whatever idea we want to work on. I love the class dojo videos also!! We have just started with the growth mindset series. #rcstechchat
A2 My parents have told me that our Student Story and Class Story posts as well as tracking behavior on @ClassDojo have eliminated this dreaded conversation. Instead: "I saw what you did at school today! Tell me more about it!" #RCSTechChat
A4 Teaching students how to work in partnerships as well as modeling and role playing they way we respond to others in difficult situations.
#rcstechchat
#rcstechchat I would also be careful to add in positive feedback to the parents so they aren't always seeing negative notes on dojo. I try to give everyone at least one positive note a week.
A4. I use class dojo to help with #SocialEmotionalLearning growth mindset, empathy, perseverance, mindfulness. My students absolutely love the videos and the activities that go with it! the other day we did mindful movement!
#rcstechchat
A1 I love posting videos and pictures of what my students are doing and learning throughout the day. If a concept is difficult, I post a video on @ClassDojo to show how the task should be completed. This holds the students accountable for their work π@CaitClassDojo#rcstechchat
A5 TOO many to listβ¦ but if you teach elementary or middle school, I find books by Julia Cook do the job π Hop on Amazon, add them to my wishlist, wait for PTA money so I can BUY ALL THE BOOKS! Love that #SEL learning π #RCSTechChat
A5: A recent one we read in 2nd grade was "The Invisible Boy" by Trudy Ludwig which helped students learn ways to include others and why it's important. #rcstechchat
A4 I would like to know more about the term tbh. I am a big believer in classroom climate of positivity and respect. This creates comfort which allows students to grow and achieve. #RCSTechChat
Q5 My principal requires every teacher to make two postive phone calls or contacts with parents each week. Don't have a book that I can share.
#rcstechchat
A2 Every Friday I attach my newsletter to @ClassDojo. In my newsletter, it states what they are learning in each subject for the following week. I also include a study guide π@CaitClassDojo#rcstechchat
A5 I always read The Snitches by Dr. Suess at the beginning of the year. Really helps teach tolerance and even 8th graders love being read to! #rcstechchat
Q5/A5: Honestly, I'm reading "Wonder" to my class right now. It's a great discussion starter for treating others the way you want to me treated, no matter your differences. #rcstechchat
A5: Engage virtual environments! This generation of Ss has grown up with the iPad. They understand virtual environments (games) better than the real world. Meet them there!! #rcstechchat
A5: I'm currently reading "Holes" and for some reason the kiddos have been so into it! Their discussions make my heart explode. Sometimes just a shared love of a story fosters a positive environment! #rcstechchat
Q4/A4 I am going to try the dojo videos too, we work together very well and the students seem to take ownership in our classroom environment #rcstechchat
A5: I'm currently reading "Holes" and for some reason the kiddos have been so into it! Their discussions make my heart explode. Sometimes just a shared love of a story fosters a positive environment! #rcstechchat
I'm going slightly off topic, even though I made the question, but I used to play those Pixar shorts and we'd talk as a class about how the characters were feeling and how they knew. #RCSTechChat
A5I love The Name Jar because it helps our American students understand the challenges our Newcomer ESL students face as they start school in a new country with new culture.
#rcstechchat

#rcstechchat
A5: We have read about Secret Kindness Agents with our advocacy-group. They love it and it has been a great way to teach about thinking of others with no expectations of thanks. #RCSTechChat
That's a good one. Another one I came across this year is called "I'm New Here" which is pretty short but touches on 3 students' experiences as immigrants to America. #rcstechchat
Hmmm i am not sure at times I am keeping up...but whenI am its because I use my office 365 calendar app integrated with my apple watch, Onenote to keep organized, and a dear friend @smithstrcs to remind me when things are..lol #RCSTechChat
A3 We try to have an event every month at our school. We have had Science night, Math night, Literacy night and FSA night all this year. ALL have been successful. I love seeing my students and their families interact with the curriculum π @CaitClassDojo#rcstechchat
A6 2 words people: Scheduled messages!!! π During planning time, enter those reminders for upcoming assemblies, project due dates, etc. into your messages in ClassDojo... never forget to remember to remind a parent about a reminder... π€― #RCSTechChat
Hmmm i am not sure at times I am keeping up...but whenI am its because I use my office 365 calendar app integrated with my apple watch, Onenote to keep organized, and a dear friend @smithstrcs to remind me when things are..lol #RCSTechChat
A6: ORGANIZATION SKILLS- find a system that works for you. I have started to use google calendar for myself (not parents or students) and keep a list of to-do's on apple notes- easy to update or check wherever I'm at. #rcstechchat
A6 I think perspective of what I do and why I do it, passion for what I do because I love being an educator, and my calendar. It keeps me on task daily! #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat
A. 3 i send home a checklist for other things and ways they think they can help contribute to the classroom and allow them to share their talents with the class that way.
A6. I use a planner to write down all of the important dates and things to remember. If I don't write it down I wont remember it, but I also keep to a routine.
#rcstechchat

#rcstechchat
A6: Immediate feedback is so important! As soon as we finish a project or an assignment, they get feedback at that moment and it goes home! Love to splash their work on-the ipad/ appletv! #rcstechchat
A6 May sound old fashioned (dinosaur here), but I use a student ageda to keep up with everything that goes on every day. I keep attendace, behavior, notes to parents, tardies, etc.... #rcstechchat
A2 we write reflections throughout the day about what we have learned. Iβm wondering if those could be shared on ClassDojo with parents. #rcstechchat
I agree, keep our busy parents informed. Most parents work and need dates of tests and assignments that are due. Classroom newsletters via email and online are a huge plus, everyone has a device these days. #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat
A. 5 We read No David and a BAD case of Stripes along with Chrysanthemum at the beginning of the year. We also start the year off with the Kissing hand books.
A7 I LOVE Student Stories on ClassDojo b/c students can independently share and it instantly posts for both teacher and parent to see (pending teacher approval). Students can even see feedback notes from their teacher and parent, how motivating is that!? π #RCSTechChat
A7 For us, it is the iNow School wide program that has up to date progress for students and parents. Again, the negative is that it does depend on parent usage instead of teachers notifying the families. #RCSTechChat
Q7/A7 we use data binders, all graded papers are in one binder, we add tests and graph our progress, we use newsletters and write daily in our agendas #rcstechchat
I message parents on Dojo about progress. For my parents it seems to be the best way for the message to get to then and allows them to immediately ask questions. #rcstechchat
A7- I do not have a homeroom since I am the tech coach but I have an after school club. I put all of those students in a class and communicate changes/meeting/etc through messenger! #RCSTechChat
A7: #rcstechchat can @ClassDojo be my answer for everything? lol! I think that sending home updates on fluency and writing is a great way to just keep parents up-to-date on their child's progress, & of course, progress report, report cards, & calls home.
Q7/A7 Keeping grades updated in iNow. I have frequently recorded notes along with the grade to give parents information about skills and effort. #RCSTechChat
A7: #rcstechchat can @ClassDojo be my answer for everything? lol! I think that sending home updates on fluency and writing is a great way to just keep parents up-to-date on their child's progress, & of course, progress report, report cards, & calls home.

A7 I take a photo of everything important that goes home for families on CD. It creates a backup when parents lose something. #RCSTechChat And that's because parents do not always look at their child's folder.
A7 I do not have to send out as much info as a regular classroom teacher being RA's. Backpacks and webpage is my only way right now! Having all kids, phone is out, except in some situations.
#rcstechchat
#rcstechchat
A. 6 I have multiple calendars on my phone around my room and at my house. Plus I have a good team that communicates and meets weekly to help each other remember what to send out and when. It helps !
A7: #rcstechchat can @ClassDojo be my answer for everything? lol! I think that sending home updates on fluency and writing is a great way to just keep parents up-to-date on their child's progress, & of course, progress report, report cards, & calls home.
A7: Most of my teachers still use weekly folders. My goal for next year (as we get more student devices) is to start helping them with Student Story. #RCSTechChat
I'm interested in doing this for groups I work with since I don't have a homeroom either. Wasn't sure it could be done, plan on looking into it. #rcstechchat
I'm interested in doing this for groups I work with since I don't have a homeroom either. Wasn't sure it could be done, plan on looking into it. #rcstechchat
#rcstechchat
A. 6 continued
we take turns each week sending out reminders that are grade level so all we have to do is either copy and past it or forward it on.
A7 Again, speaking as an ESL teacher, we really utilize our amazing ESL EA's to call parents and inform them about the big and the small things.
#rcstechchat
A7 Using Student Story as a digital portfolio of student work shows parents how their child is doing. I will also add feedback when students post their class or center work, which helps parents see what their student did well, and what they can work on #RCSTechChat
#rcstechchat
A. 7 I usually send out a paper copy in their daily folders, but I also use dojo to send a little hey guys check the backpacks for this. I also attach copy to the dojo so they an print it off if it gets lost.
A8- Get dojo going even if its not school wide and get parents on board for day 1. Help them set up accounts on parent night. Show them how easy it all is #RCSTechChat
A8 If students/parents are previously connected to the school, you can easily pull them into your class from your roster and send a message before school even starts! #rcstechchat
This is a critical question. Now is the time to explore as much as possible in order to prepare for the next year. Part of my effort now is bringing staff together with Class Dojo. #RCSTechChat
A8: invite parents to Class Dojo before school starts, post info about yourself, classroom, or other school-related things to build a connection and get them engaged before they even step in the door #rcstechchat
A8 I love an idea that T Hannah Frank shared. She uses ClassDojo so her class is setup before school starts. Since families are connected she posts a video of a read aloud so parents and students can get to know her before they even step foot into the classroom. #RCSTechChat
A8: #rcstechchat I started Dojo mid-year, so next year I'll be using it right out of the gate. CD will totally be in my registration packet! I also plan to post about myself so parents feel more at ease when asking questions/contacting me in anyway.
RCS teachers - Here's the link for tonight's #RCSTechChat survey. Remember you MUST fill this out to receive credit for 1 hour of PD.
https://t.co/koUysRPBz6
A8. I like to use google classroom, so I would have parents fill out a google form telling me a few of their child's favorite things and all about me questions. This can be sent out through a simple email!
#rcstechchat
#rcstechchat
A. 8 When we get their information fro our students. You can send them a phone invite to get started and connected then if you have any new families on orientation which we do before our kid come in they can all sign up that night before they leave.
Q8/A8 I send a welcome e-mail and ask parents to complete a Google Docs survey before the first day of school. I get some good information right away. Hope to start using Twitter some more next year to connect. #RCSTechChat
A8 Use ClassDojo messaging to send an individual message to each parent in the first week to start a positive conversation about their child to open the lines of communication and show the parent that you are on their childβs side, that youβre a team for their kiddo #RCSTechChat
A8 I certainly need to develop a system of being able to update parents weekly on student activity and progress.Maybe if I can immediately make them feel a part of the classroom then they will stay involved in the high school years. I also like the "about me" idea. #RCSTechChat
Thanks for having me #RCSTechChat β€οΈ It's always an amazing experience to collaborate with teachers around the world. I've got to run, but feel free Tweet to me, DM me, or email me! I'm always here to help π Caitlin@ClassDojo.com
A8- I will make certain that all students' families understand the purpose of Class Dojo, all that it can do for our classroom environment, and how it can connect us (parents and teachers) as a team #rcstechchat
Q8 Good question......do not know yet if I have a good option for that. I need to find out if teachers in our school are familiar with Dojo. I do not have access to the greatest technology at my school. I am very limited!
#rcstechchat
A8 Sending emails to every parent introducing myself and expressing my excitement for the year, sending each student a postcard in the mail welcoming them to our classroom community, and inviting families to connect on @classdojo! #RCSTechChat
