#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd tonight we are exploring a Hip-Hop approach to Mentoring. January is #NationalMentoringMonth so we wanted to use this as an opportunity to have this timely discussion
With the Internet/SocialMedia raising more youth than ever it's critical that #HipHopEd(ucators) step up and serve as mentors to help youth decipher the #vital from the #viral#NationalMentoringMonth
Favorite mentoring lesson is a comparison of Kanye’s Big Brother and Cole’s Let Nas Down. Great resources to facilitate a critical convo with youth about the necessary ups and downs of an authentic mentor/mentee relationship #HipHopEd
Building off the chat from last week on MLK's essay on the purpose of Education..."Intelligence + Character = true education" we need women + men that communicate & embody that ethos 4 our youth #HipHopEd

A mentor doesn't have to be a catch all for all of your needs in various seasons. I have mentors who I look to for personal and professional development and these individuals maybe for a season #HipHopEd
Mentoring starts by building w/ students Eye 2 Eye...you cannot look down on a generation & expect to guide them #HipHopEd Balance your Passion w/ Patience #Note2Self
And we need to reach beyond the binary -- seek out people of all genders to represent and mentor students, including those whose gender identities don't fit into the socially proscribed M/F boxes. #HipHopEd

Let’s remember culture is always changing and it is our job as educators to allow students the opportunity to bring their funds of knowledge into our classroom so that we can help them learn how to use their cultural identity to sustain their culture and identity. #HipHopEd
Something important I’ve learned in mentoring relationships is when to take the role of a “friend-tor” and when to take the role of a “(tor)-mentor”. People respond to different motivational support styles in different ways @tdj6899#HipHopEd
This goes back to Dr. King’s article that we discussed last week as a community. The purpose of education (and purposeful mentorship) is to arm our young people with the ability to critically analyze their world. #HipHopEd

Indeed....mentoring is not a one size fits all...Ss will naturally gravitate to the mentors they feel that feel/relate to them best...having diverse options from mentees is critical #HipHopEd

Bet @Ianplevy & co can speak to it more cogenly but hip hop & mentorship are an organic fit because both require:
Daily Practice
Active Listening
Community engagement
Inversion of normative power dynamics
Creativity
Lots more but u get it.
#handglove#HipHopEd
Yes! Staying open -- listening to and learning from our students -- is key, and also recognizes/honors their many assets and talents that often go unnoticed or unappreciated! #HipHopEd
Even though they're brothers, I think chance and Taylor show a good example of mentor mentee relationship, in the song broad shoulders. Song really touches on how you can be like your mentor but still have your own path to walk. #HipHopEd
It is important for us to teach young people how to be critical consumers with all of the information they are receiving daily, which makes it critical for us to learn and adapt to how youth are consuming information so we can better serve as mentors #HipHopED
Something important I’ve learned in mentoring relationships is when to take the role of a “friend-tor” and when to take the role of a “(tor)-mentor”. People respond to different motivational support styles in different ways @tdj6899#HipHopEd
We don't often control what people get from how we interact with them and carry ourselves around them. Mentoring is a life style and not a job description #HipHopEd
Recently @souljaboy went on the breakfast club and talked about his mistakes as a teen in the game. He ALSO was straight up attacked by many OGs in the game early. Where were his mentors? I remember him responding to IceT’s shots by saying “then help me,show me the way.”#HipHopEd
I see mentorship as intergenerational work-- mentees grow up to become mentors, and
as mentors we should continue seeking out mentorship for ourselves, maintain the openness to being a mentee. #HipHopEd#lifelonglearning
While examining mentoring, it's important to recognize the potential power dynamics in the relationship. Mentors can learn just as much from mentees, and should be open to the collaborative aspects. #hiphoped
Yeah fam. Mentor/mentee relationship and the counseling relationship are so similar. The ability of a mentor to validate the difficult thoughts and feelings a mentee experiences, empathize with them, and support them unconditionally #HipHopEd#HumanisticMentorship

Lessons can be learned from the mistakes of others as well as knowledge shared by others. Wisdom helps us learn from ourselves and others #HipHopEd#NationalMentoringMonth
Old Hip Hop heads have to appreciate something about this generations' music. Otherwise, we find ourselves attacking the youth and distancing ourselves from their realities. #HipHopEd
A good mentor shares successes as readily as missteps. Celebrates victories & stands with their mentees when they are less than perfect #HipHopEd#NationalMentoringMonth

There’s a power in hearing from mentors’ successes but also their failures and insecurities. Some of the things that kept/keep me going are narratives of vulnerability. #hiphoped
Though most of my mentors are older, I have also found awesome mentors in those younger than I am because they are more experienced in an area where I need that mentorship. For example, I would consider @AVTHEGREAT a mentor at times when I needed guidance in hip-hop #HipHopED
Q: What are some of the ways y'all have found to maintain openness and authenticity while also maintaining healthy boundaries (for yourself and for your mentees)? #HipHopEd#NationalMentoringMonth
This is probably the secret to all the successes I hopefully have had as a mentor....knowing, showing & sharing...what NOT to do is the #SilverLining of all our struggles #HipHopEd

Young kids mentor me everyday in the classroom because I take the time to ask them questions about their experiences that I may not understand. A HS student put me onto a dope mediation app. #HipHopEd
As a first year teacher, Just got my job in January, a mentor is so important not only in dealing content and classroom management but also with the little things within the school such as the grade book etc. #hiphoped
In 2019 or 2009 or 1999 Good mentorship for urban Black & Brown youth cannot exist without #HipHopEd#RealTalk HipHop is the #supersonic that connects us all
A: Remain consistent in your role but over time the approaches within the role will evolve. I have adults who I've mentored since they were teenagers, #HipHopEd#NationalMentoringMonth
Yes, good mentors are real!! They find ways to make genuine connections...Relationships should be built from a place of genuine love, understanding and mutual respect not judgement... #HipHopEd
As a Teaching Fellow in SC we receive a mentor as a freshman from the sophomore group of fellows. Then we get a mentee our sophomore year. I am still in contact with my mentor! She has been so helpful, and my mentee has also helped me become the teacher I am today #HipHopEd
I think it is almost impossible for someone to be an effective mentor without being an effective mentee. Lessons learned are mastered through teaching them to others. #HipHopEd
A. Knowing what's Understood, doesn't have to be Said...youth are intuitive and perceptive...you don't have to state your resume for students to know you know what you're talking bout #HipHopEd#RRR#RealRecognizeReal
Dear new teachers, Your appointed "mentor" can poison your passion for the work. Find who is aligned to you even if they aren't assigned to you #HipHopEd
So true! My own mentor @tedancy is chronologically younger than I am, yet feels decades wiser to me. I have also learned a great deal through observing @Kenny_D_PGH as he mentors folks who are serving as mentors themselves. #HipHopEd#NationalMentoringMonth
In reply to
@mathsmarti, @AVTHEGREAT, @tedancy, @Kenny_D_PGH
Real talk since I got involved with this community all y'all have been like mentors to me consistently every Tuesday night. I appreciate the guidance and support, fam! #HipHopEd
Shout out to the local mentors behind our young folx on the 1's and 2's, on the mic during poetry slams, and anywhere else that's giving others a creative outlet to be themselves while learning the power of the counter-narrative. #hiphoped
This is important. We gotta stop just tryna be mentored by those with more traditional experience than us. My classmates/colleagues mentor me and my old students used to too. #HipHopEd
Young kids mentor me everyday in the classroom because I take the time to ask them questions about their experiences that I may not understand. A HS student put me onto a dope mediation app. #HipHopEd
Some of my best mentors were great, not because of their ability to offer a bounty of suggestions, but because they trusted I had the tools to figure some of life out on my own. I try to emulate that approach for students that seek me out for a mentoring relationship. #HipHopEd
It’s also important that many educators step up & let their students mentor them when it comes to using social media. That collaboration wd be powerful #hiphoped#hiphopdev
We can't get caught up determining who is qualified to be a mentor. Mentoring can be a form of redemption for one and responsibility for another #HipHopEd
Creating music with people of all ages is mutually beneficial for all ages involved. The 'generation gap' is a Mandela Effect. Hip-hop is the tie that binds us...😏 #HipHopEd
This is why #mentoring and #induction are so crucial to T success. Especially novice Ts that sometimes have the toughest settings. Your mentor only be a person that gives you the procedure, but not the pedagogy. #HipHopEd Love this sentiment!
Dear new teachers, Your appointed "mentor" can poison your passion for the work. Find who is aligned to you even if they aren't assigned to you #HipHopEd
Sometimes Great mentoring is knowing you ain't the best mentor for a student/young educator but pointing them towards the right one that AIN'T you #HipHopEd
#hiphoped Mentoring is a manifestation of the African American proverb “each one teach one” which has also been adopted by HH culture w traditions such as carrying crates and other “apprenticeships”
I personally stayed away from the term "mentor" I've believed in organically giving and receiving through great relationships I've been blessed to have and cultivate along the way #HipHopEd
Akinyele to Noreaga, Dre to Snoop, Jay-Z to J Cole, Erik Sermon to Redman, Kanye to Cudi, Kool G Rap to Nas, Nas to Dave East
There is a clear difference between mentoring somebody and "puttin' someone on."
#HipHopEd
I agree! I particularly appreciate all the times @tdj6899 and @amilcook have answered my totally-newbie questions on here over the past ~18 months, and done so with compassion and a genuine interest in my learning. #HipHopEd#NationalMentoringMonth
Thank you to @chrisemdin and the #HipHopEd family for mentoring me through student teaching, and I hope to learn so much more as I begin my journey as a #HipHopEd teacher!
Building off the chat from last week on MLK's essay on the purpose of Education..."Intelligence + Character = true education" we need women + men that communicate & embody that ethos 4 our youth #HipHopEd
Some combo of "liberation" "guidance" "listening" -- I am *sure* that there's a word for this in a language less restrictive than English (Twi?). #HipHopEd#NationalMentoringMonth
#mentoring is a word many folks in the #hip hop community tend to stay away from, too many folks outside of the community have defined it for us. My work is intended to reclaim the word for us as it’s been part of our ancestry forever. #HipHopEd

Shoutout to @DrJamaalyoung who was an awesome mentor through my dissertation journey and continues to be an great mentor as I figure out my next steps #HipHopEd
Please u sweat and how important #mentoring is to the passing down of our traditions and movements! Young folx just hear from us, we must provide them with our guidance and wisdom. Hip-Hop been doing that! #HipHopEd
Shout out to my Brother @chrisemdin for making sure I was on tonite! Won’t be no future of Hip-Hop without the intergenerarional dialogue that is mentoring. #HipHopEd
Please understand how important #mentoring is to the passing down of our traditions and movements! Young folx need to hear from us, we must provide them with our guidance and wisdom. Hip-Hop been doing that! #HipHopEd
Can’t wait to bring #HipHopEd workshop to @BGCWPA in a few weeks with @tdj6899 where we will re-influence ourselves... the start of a beautiful teen program.
Your credibility as a mentor isn't the fact that you've walked the path of your mentee, it's based on your willingness to learn to understand (not judge) their path #HipHopEd
