#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
The other day my colleagues and I were discussing the rise in the number of “canned curriculum” given to us. Do you find that you have expectations to use this type of teaching material? #kinderchat
Total sidebar, and I will remind you again at the end of the hour: Next week is annual #kinderchat holiday party! Sign up for virtual tacky teacher gift exchange is here: https://t.co/TREqMNy59D
Yes in many ways. Some are the school expectations and parents response to behavior. #kinderchat Not something I would do now everyday. Kids are delightful. I see more issues..
We’re finding that we have a Readers Workshop curriculum, a letter/wordwork curriculum, and now there is a new math curriculum headed our way. It seems that is all we are given #kinderchat
There are some benefits to having scripted curriculum. It takes pressure off the teacher, gives classes a common language that can travel with them to the next grade. Can you think of any other positives? #kinderchat
I stayed home with mine until my youngest started school. It was worth it for our family. If I had the opportunity to go part time though, I think I would have jumped at it #kinderchat
To me, the prob is not canned curriculum. Prob is when teachers are given no professional autonomy to adapt curric to needs of students/context. #kinderchat
I do think we have to be careful with these type of programs - we need to respect the children, their interests, their inquiries and not get stuck in a script #kinderchat

You raise an excellent point Amy! My off and I were discussing Lucy Caulkins (not to disparage or discourage, just as a reference). She hates it because they are given no autonomy in how to implement and use it. I like it because I use it as I see fit. #kinderchat

Right! At my old school, we had a huge comprehensive canned literacy curric to use as guide & resource. It was GREAT! Use this stuff! How you want! Here is suggested pacing! #kinderchat
IMO, insisting on mass implementation of canned curric, w/ "perfect fidelity" is about controlling teachers & making $$ for publishing companies. #cynical#kinderchat
Does anyone here teach in the Chicago Public School system? I’ve heard horror stories that all their curriculum is scripted, but I am not ready to believe that is true. #kinderchat
In the name of transparency, we are implementing HWOT in my K classes this year, using it "as written" for this 1st yr, w/frequent stops to reflect on how it is going, what we would change next yr. #kinderchat
And that’s what I’m seeing. And I find it so sad. We are constantly assessing young children, instead of giving them time and space to grow. It’s a constant push and pull with me #kinderchat
WE just decided: what the heck, let's do it their way this yr. It was developed by OTs, they know what they are doing. Let,s not overthink. #kinderchat
We have a whole day of inservice for a program we will be piloting, plus we have 1/2 hour “Learning Monday’s” once a month for our writing curriculum #kinderchat
Will have to check back later. Don’t think I’ll be making it to the #kinderchat soirée. Airport runs will keep me busy. Wishing you all a great holiday season. 🎄🕎❄️🤗
We’re piloting a literacy intervention program “Fundations”. It will be interesting to see where it takes us. It looks like a lot of drill right now though. #kinderchat
That’s really good to hear. A lot of our Ks are coming straight from home, and about 1/3 of our Ks this year are ELL It sounds like it will be useful #kinderchat
