Hello tweeps. Welcome to . Paula here joining in from New Orleans.
Hello ! Heidi from TN. Looking forward to talking tonight :)
Tongiht’s topic is - BYOD/BYOT Bring Your Own Device/Bring Your Own Technology
Hi friends - So glad to be back for another
Hey yourself. How are you and the family doing?
Hey Billy - Missing you! Hope all is well.
Hi Heidi! How are you doing? Are you state testing yet?
Have fun and check out the archives later.
Family good .. Getting ready for testing this week at school let the fun begin!
Hi Heidi. Glad you are joining us for .
Hmm…well…it was rescheduled for next week :)
Looks like a great night for soccer!! Will miss you!
Hi ! Looking forward to talking BYOD/BYOT tonight
Hi Nancy. How was your Spring Break? How was your Monday?
will do. Have a I will check the archives for the
Are you doing PARCC? Our first time for that this year!
Hi, Jenn!!! Yay the gang’s all here.
JODY!!!!! Yay - you are here! Can’t wait to learn from you!
Hey, Jody, how are you doing?
Spring Break was relaxing - gr8 weather! Today we are right back at it! Fun to see the kiddos and hear what they did.
Doing well, heading into busy time of year, but under control (mostly). How are you?
We had our first day of state testing today. We are no longer PARCC, but back to LEAP. 90 minute ELA and 75 minute math today.
Q1: is your school/district ? If not, is it considering it? Why or why not?
Hey there ! How are you tonight, Heidi?
Doing great. State testing this week and then 4 weeks of school left this year. Phew! It is flying by.
Wonderful and you? How’s treating you?
A1: Our district is rolling out Chromebooks 1:1 5th grade and up, so they are busy with that!
Q1 is 1to1 3rd-12th. Middle school on depends on the teacher.
A1: We are not BYOD, but I do some BYOD days with my kiddos.
A1: District is rolling out 1:1. Started last year & adding on each year. Hoping to have an iPad cart for my team next year.
A1: We’re NOT district.I think it has alot to do w/ security. However, I think things are changing & making small allowance.
I’m doing really great. And the kids LOVE Seesaw. Trying to keep them from oversharing!
A1: we aren't but a few classes do BYOD every few weeks for specific activities, probably not due to bandwidth etc
A1: In fact, we’re having a BYOD Day to celebrate the end of state testing this Friday.
Just 4 weeks? Yes, the pressure must be on!
Most took it seriously, and I think all finished both parts in the allotted time frame.
Do you have bldg. admin. permission for those days? It’s a no go for me right now. Concern of breakage.
Wow - it just seems so strange that you are done so early! But you also go back early! lol
State testing on computers today and our building internet went down! More stress!!!
Heard an interesting idea last week, good to test how BYOD goes: Have every Thursday morning be BYOD - regular but short to manage
Permission? Not actually, but she knows I do it. LOL
I’m worried about them typing their Open Responses - we have not really practiced that part as much as we should have.
Q2: What are the benefits of going ?
I think that’s some concern in r district - I know some Ts have gotten permission slips from Ps.
Oh NO! That’s what happened to us. Now taking test on paper. Has been rescheduled 2x.
So what happens when the internet goes down? Do you sit & wait? Someone come to the rescue?
Yikes, that’s not good. Now what happens? Do you have to postpone?
No way!! We did that 2 years ago, just pushed schedule back for this time.
A2- One benefit of BYOD is each student can use the device best suited for them - build student agency & knowing self as learner
I send home a letter to Ps stating that our school is not responsible for any damage or loss.
Just pushed back schedule…they thing a squirrel chewed a wire. No kidding.
This sounds like a good plan for those just starting out. I think many wld be comfortable w/ a clear plan https://t.co/Asiltbz8cT
Heard an interesting idea last week, good to test how BYOD goes: Have every Thursday morning be BYOD - regular but short to manage
We had one week of tests in Feb/Mar (LOTS of writing to text) & now gearing up for another week next week.
A2: Tech device is familiar to student. Less money drain on school.
My class wasn’t in there at that time. Our test was postponed until tomorrow. Poor kids...
A2: Allowing Ss to work on their own devices makes them more comfortable I believe. Also can do 1:1 activities in class.
A2- Another benefit of BYOD is getting Ts away from whole class lockstep work and into student driven projects at own pace.
We had to go to paper and pencil tests. Hard when you’ve practiced for computer answering Ss are great!
A2: BYOD would free up school’s tech budget for other things rather than devices which have short shelf life.
They do roll with it if the teacher does! :)
Q3: What are some of the challenges of going ?
A2: Some benefit of Ss wld most likely know HOW to use their own devices. Increased engagement; cost effective
A3: Outdated devices/software, some sts without, photos that come in with the device..
A3- BYOD Challenges incl. giving up all Ss same in lockstep, finding comparable apps/software, tech trouble-shooting a nightmare
A3: BYOD challenges include drain on bandwidth, Ts not knowing all the devices, having policies and procedures in place.
Do you ask them to have certain apps installed? Like
I’m sure this is anxiety-provoking! Should be no delays. https://t.co/NSxGFOSru1
My class wasn’t in there at that time. Our test was postponed until tomorrow. Poor kids...
Might debate this. Many will come with devices expecting T to teach now to use. T must acquire passing comfort with all
A3: Games and other distractors that are loaded on their devices. Also inappropriate music.
Our Ss are masters of the devices we deploy, so games & music are not just BYOD issues.
Ohhh - I hadn’t even thought of THIS!! Good point.Ts wld then have to be flexible & model using new tools. https://t.co/31lkg5JXSQ
Might debate this. Many will come with devices expecting T to teach now to use. T must acquire passing comfort with all
Funny should should ask that. We are finally just getting started with Seesaw this week so I will.
Previously, they all installed the app since we use that as our LMS.
Oh, Paula! You are going to love it! Heidi is an expert at inspiring!
Hope they enjoy it as much as my Ss! has wonderful app suggestions every Sat on periscope
Hmmm...paid apps. How manage if don't own device & cross platform so no vol purchasing. Cost to parents?
A3: I don’t believe Ts needs to have knowledge of all devices, but what better way to learn than letting Ss show you theirs.
Q4: What policies should be in place before your school/district goes ?
I would think paid apps would be a stickler. is free & so very versatile :)
Kids jump in to help each other so quickly, it’s not necessary for teacher to know it all!
These are some real issues. We have enough outdated devices. Who becomes responsible for updating/care? https://t.co/feEWFIgMvv
A3: Outdated devices/software, some sts without, photos that come in with the device..
Thanks for sharing that. I will check it out. Excited about using the blog.
I have not explored yet, but it is in one of my open tabs to look at in the next few days.
A3: Possible inappropriate games/images. Possible breakage & blame others.
Think the “Plan/Policy” part shld be thought out/explained before implementing a consistent https://t.co/7x9DvXPFb7
A3: BYOD challenges include drain on bandwidth, Ts not knowing all the devices, having policies and procedures in place.
My Ss LOVE it. Like Facebook but SAFE! Parent connection is
You have had days - have you run into this type of problem often? https://t.co/MtfG03q0xt
A3: Games and other distractors that are loaded on their devices. Also inappropriate music.
A4: We have done lessons on before any so they know what is expected.
Agreed. Passing familiarity similarities & diffs helps when planning. Most imprtnt is plan ped. sound lesson
Let me know how you like it. My Ss aren’t “hooked” on it yet. Need to make more time to let them explore it.
A4: Also because we don’t have a dedicated student wifi access, I don’t share code but log each device in myself.
Me too! I need to give them challenges to complete!
Would be so much easier if I were 1:1…and had an extra hour in the day to get everything caught up :(
What a great idea! Let me know when you get that all worked out!
A4: Your school’s AUP should be updated to include a section on BYOD policies and procedures.
A4- Good PD to support planning & class mngment struct. --> success from day 1. Once in place, will survive inevitable tech bumps
A4: Digital Citizenship, insurance fees, info + classes for kids & parents.
Just getting into it! I need to give more time too & give Ps sign ups. Kids love it https://t.co/FIWhRYqoWw
Let me know how you like it. My Ss aren’t “hooked” on it yet. Need to make more time to let them explore it.
Hhh….I will have to check on that!
Have had one or two Ss try to “push the envelope” but after they lost privileges for an hour, they followed rules.
Absolutely agree. And in Student friendly language so everyone on same page & referred to often
Q5: How can teachers plan lessons that account for the variety of devices that enter the classroom w/ ?
I find that Ss are so willing to help one another-even if they don’t know - lol . https://t.co/sy00d6Ch4P
Kids jump in to help each other so quickly, it’s not necessary for teacher to know it all!
A4: Digital Citizenship, insurance?, info + classes for kids & parents.
It only takes that one time & they realize that you mean business. https://t.co/uUJUYkI39d
Have had one or two Ss try to “push the envelope” but after they lost privileges for an hour, they followed rules.
Same here, Paula. Doesn’t happen often bc they love using own devices! Hoping they use it that way at home!
Lol. 99 times out of 100, they figure it out one way or another!
A5- Plan lessons around ped goals & allow Ss choose best tools to show their thinking & learning. Makes particular tool irrelevant
A5: Check out apps & sites that have multiple device platforms… Upload final product to 1 place
Let’s try for Sunday Night for a GHO!
A4: Ss need to be adopters of Good Digital Citizenship practices. Ts need to work on that.
Truly - their works when they are motivated! https://t.co/wHp5BrB1qx
Lol. 99 times out of 100, they figure it out one way or another!
Needs to be about the “Lesson” not the device! Good point. https://t.co/wHqPOM6Cg4
Agreed. Passing familiarity similarities & diffs helps when planning. Most imprtnt is plan ped. sound lesson
Thanks have to bug out early! Great chat and topic! Looking forward to connecting through Take a break from testing & Tweet
LOVE the idea of having a challenge for them. https://t.co/w1LjChn6gj
Me too! I need to give them challenges to complete!
Q6: How can schools/districts handle the “have vs. have not” dilemma with ?
Ours is the Student Code of Conduct for tech. Building a Breakout EDU on rights & responsibilities involved in tech use
A technology night for Ps would be more meaningful if . Keep saying I’m going to do it but haven’t :( https://t.co/0Md5p9NBJc
A4: Digital Citizenship, insurance fees, info + classes for kids & parents.
A6: If not enough devices for all, I supplement. If still not enough for all, we then partner up! Never had a student complain!
Hello . Can never seem to catch this whole chat on Mondays. Miss everyone. Hope all is well besides testing season ...yuck
Q6- District needs be ready provide access/devices to "have nots"- challenges: changing year to year & "haves" choose not BYOD
A5: I’, planning a smackdown with my Ss. Each one will have 4 minutes or less to share a tool or site with the rest of us.
Bye Heidi - great connecting with you! (As always!!). Need to get back to
A5: Also can have all Ss working on their blogs, playing , watching or BrainPOP videos about their interests.
My kids love quizlet this year. Using for math science and social studies.
Love the smackdown idea. What are odds you have internet posting permission for all and will livestream on GHO on Air?
As a future teacher, what are some benefits from you all have seen in your classrooms?
A6: Very first BYOD day, a Ss asked if they could bring in 4 devices. I asked why. Ss said so she could share with others.
A6: For those Ss who don’t have a device-they can use the device we have at school. Hopefully, there’s enough to go around
Partner up works on so many levels. Great idea. https://t.co/BSPIRHNFmT
A6: If not enough devices for all, I supplement. If still not enough for all, we then partner up! Never had a student complain!
A6: I work in a high poverty school (almost 90% f/r lunch) and most have devices.
Especially when they realize the alternative is to not do the activity!
A6: For those who don’t have a device or forget to bring one in, they use one of our class Chromebooks.
Q7: What security measures need to be in place for the Ss devices when not being used?
Same for me! So many iPhones for 4th graders! https://t.co/rg3gNlAREi
A6: I work in a high poverty school (almost 90% f/r lunch) and most have devices.
Many high poverty Ss have newer devices than I do. LOL
Some Ss broke/damaged machines we provide last year & family refuses to pay repair deductible so don't get one this year.
Hey, David. I use , , and Ss love them all.
Maybe BYOD they would value it, look after & bring it to class more than one we provide
Sorry, can’t do GHO on Air because we don’t have access to YouTube. Yet! Maybe I could talk to IT dept.
I think it will still record though.
It would be a great reason to open it up - sharing expertise with the world!
I’ll have to check it out. I have posting permission for all of my Ss. I’ll get on it and let you know.
great job moderating tonight!
A7: I lock all devices in my classroom for lunch and PE.
A7- Security: Safe location in class (not bumped/knocked around), locked classroom door when T not present. NOT stored in lockers!
Great way to handle Security Also make sure they don’t go out to recess with them. https://t.co/V5CrlEdGZY
A7: I lock all devices in my classroom for lunch and PE.
Thanks for these great resources.
Wow, lots of great resources to check out! Thanks, Paula!
Q8: So who among us is now fired up to at least ask to pilot a couple of BYOD Days before the end of school this year?
Have I mentioned lately how very much I love to with this incredible PLN?
Hi Paula - I’m going to keep pushing for it! Thanks for all the gr8 ideas & resources!
A8: I’ve already taken the plunge on BYOD Days. Now I’m striving to pilot BYOD full-time in my classroom.
Q8- I'd go for frequent & rich use of our 1:1 iPads, but maybe I'll try and do something in a HS class with BYOD to check it out
Thank you for a gr8 night of &
Thanks y’all for another rousing discussion on . Thanks my wingmen (winggals) and .
Gotta run! So glad to have a chance to learn with the gang. Thanks
To all our tweeps - Go forth and be awesome.
Nancy, David, let me know if you want to do a game via GHO. Great fun.
is over, but the convo doesn't have to end! For transcripts, resources & chat analytics head to https://t.co/E0P4LAO2xr
That would be awesome! :)
Now that has team play it is easy to compete against other classes.
