Welcome to #EDpiper! Let's get rolling by introducing ourselves. Be sure to add the #EDpiper hashtag & also add an extra hashtag to tell how you're feeling tonight! #readytorockandroll
Hi! I'm Cindy Woody, your lead #EDpiper moderator tonight! Please tell us who you are, where you're from, & what you do. Add a fun hashtag to tell us how you feel tonight! #exhilarated
Fist bump to all of you for joining #EDpiper tonight. I hope you had a relaxing Labor Day. I’m @DrJohnsonEDU Principal from central TX & co-mod of #Edpiper. Let’s roll!
Rachel Edson, 3rd grade ELAR teacher at @CastlemanCreek! We are currently having a family fantasy football draft, grading papers, and tweeting... 😳so #multitasker#EDpiper
Q1: We want to hear specific routines or procedures you use to keep yourself & your students on track. Be sure to add the hashtag #EDpiper to every tweet so we can see your response.
Q1. Tell us about some of the routines & procedures that keep you & your students on track. Be sure to add #EDpiper to your tweets & make your profile public so we can see you!
A1: We have a set of norms that we agree to. Routines are often set in place after the first few weeks of shaking the rust off from over the summer. #edpiper

Yep! This time last year I was sitting in a hospital room dazed and reality was setting in. That and sleep deprivation from being awake 22 hours haha. #edpiper

R1: Routines must be established on day 1 with Ss. Continuing with those rules and expectations the rest of the year are important with consistency. #EDpiper
Good evening! Shari Dawson checking in! Glad to be here but I think the long weekend is going to have me needing my coffee administered intravenously in the morning! #edpiper#letstalkaboutrespect
A1- In the land of Kinder everything has a routine or procedure. It keeps us all sane! For me personally- I like to have a written out detailed schedule posted to keep me on track! #edpiper

A1: I teach the procedures as we get to them. We start with what we need and add from there. The way I teach it day 1 is the way we keep it all year. They (students) eventually start holding me accountable. #EDpiper
A1 - I cherish my morning and dismissal routines dearly! It gets me in my groove ato start the day and end the day consistently. Mornings are peaceful and quiet, and dismissal is fun and full of sharing triumphs! #edpiper
A1- This year my rules and procedures are focused around our school wide discipline acronym P.R.I.D.E. The purpose of my rules is to help my classroom function as a family. #EDpiper
A1: I teach the procedures as we get to them. We start with what we need and add from there. The way I teach it day 1 is the way we keep it all year. They (students) eventually start holding me accountable. #EDpiper
Consistency is very important...I think this is often forgotten in older grades where Ss share Ts...so hard for our Ss to adjust to so many different expectations. #EDpiper
A1: I think one of the most important things to remember is that routines and procedures need to be practiced, adjusted, practiced some more all the time...not just the first few days of school. #EDpiper
Consistency is very important...I think this is often forgotten in older grades where Ss share Ts...so hard for our Ss to adjust to so many different expectations. #EDpiper
Yes! I also think it is helpful to allow the S to help you decide (on some) routines. They enjoy getting to make the decisions and take more ownership! #edpiper
Hi Sydney! I am so glad you're on #EDpiper. I always have to brag and say you are my #1 hire - literally! You will forever be my first hire as a campus leader. I adore you!
BINGO! Some of the best routines I have ever developed have been sort of “on the fly”. Realizing in the middle of teaching that something about our day feels uncomfortable, then immediately stopping and adjusting our routines to reflect something that makes more sense!#edpiper
R2: I communicate my rules and expectations every week with my Ss with my weekly plan for class. I send out my weekly email on Friday afternoon to Ps and Ss with what we are doing weekly. Everyone on the same page. #EDpiper
A2: Visual representations are huge, especially in the younger classrooms. We've also been suggesting/researching a lot of visual reps in 1:1 or high tech classrooms. #EDpiper
A2: The Ss are involved in the creation of these expectations since day 1 & they reference their own expectations regularly. Parents are made aware of these within the 1st week through newsletters & parent night information #txed#edpiper
R1: Routines must be established on day 1 with Ss. Continuing with those rules and expectations the rest of the year are important with consistency. #EDpiper
A2: I set the expectations for the students from day 1. We develop our own classroom contract that encompasses them all. This year we broke down what PRIDE looks like and sounds like and the students are working hard to reach it. #EDpiper
A2: Partner with parents through consistent communication regarding expectations and don't forget to share what that looks like in your classroom and on your campus. #EDpiper
Agreed! I try and teach personal responsibility in the students, but they still need that support system from their parents and reinforcement at home to do well. #edpiper
WOW! I must say, we have some great communicators in this group tonight! We've come a long way in communicating clear expectations, that's for sure! #EDpiper#communication
A2 - I love that in 3rd grade, the kiddos have matured & can handle relaying information to their parents. I value empowering them to communicate their progress with their parents via daily exit tickets going home, showing them their grades, Schoology data, etc. #edpiper
A1- In the land of Kinder everything has a routine or procedure. It keeps us all sane! For me personally- I like to have a written out detailed schedule posted to keep me on track! #edpiper
Agreed. That's why I'm glad Google Classroom has come as far as it has. Parents are able to join and receive e-mails about what we are working on to stay in the know. #edpiper
A2: I just sat with a group of parents this week and they said one of the most important things to them is when the teacher communicates the class expecations. They can help hold their children accountable when they understand the expectations.
#EDpiper
So true! You can always tell how much kids rely on the class visuals when you cover or remove the visual & they still stare at that spot to help them organize their thoughts. #EDPiper
A2: I begin each of my classes with a meeting. During meeting, we discuss rules and procedures. I continuously remind and model my expectations for students. I also have a copy of rules in each students' PRIDE folder for parents to see. #EDpiper
Q3: How do you make your classroom feel like a safe place for students to learn and grow? Reminder: Add the hashtag #EDpiper to all responses so we can see you! #YouMatter
Hank Pendley, Midlothian, TX- 3rd Grade! A1: I think the biggest routine and procedure to starting the year off for success is building relationships first and always! #edpiper
A2: Meet Ss and parents where they are. That means communicating in many modes. Many parents like Class Dojo, others prefer e-mail, and an old-fashioned phone call home is always welcome! Key= communicate expectations early and often to both Ss & parents. #edpiper#getonthephone
A2: I personally love to have a strong relationship with my parents. I’m open to all forms of communications and I am available when they need me. We spend so much time with their children that we are their support lines at times. #edpiper
It is important for S to see that everyone makes a mistake/ struggles with things. This allows them to relax and not stress as much. My S see this from the get- go with my low level artistic ability! #edpiper
Q3: How do you make your classroom feel like a safe place for students to learn and grow? Reminder: Add the hashtag #EDpiper to all responses so we can see you! #YouMatter
A3: This year we started a 95 min "AC Lab" where students can seek out extra help during the school day. Several students have sought me out for school/non-school conversations. #edpiper
A3: I want my students to think of my classroom as their school home. I am clear and consistent with my expectations, rewards and consequences. The kids always know what to expect from me which builds trust and respect. #EDpiper
A1 school wide procedures and routines taught right off the bat. Routines & procedures retaught over morning announcements or during lunch. Ts also have classroom routines that are being taught and retaught during this 1st 6 weeks and as needed #EDpiper
A2: I just sat with a group of parents this week and they said one of the most important things to them is when the teacher communicates the class expecations. They can help hold their children accountable when they understand the expectations.
#EDpiper
R3: allow Ss to ask questions, make corrections, limit letter grades, turn in assignments at the student pace. Also allow Ss to have second, third, and fourth chances. If Ss make mistakes, don’t send them directly to office. Conference w/ them. #EDpiper
A3: We always start our day with something that they want to share w/ me, no matter how small it may be. This reinforces that our class is a safe space for them to feel valued, learn, & that their Ts care! W/ that knowledge, they move mountains! #edpiper
A3: I try to make them laugh, see me try different things, encourage and applaud them in public etc. I also hold us all accountable, set the rules and model them and give clear expectations so they know what to expect & feel safe #EDpiper
A3: Risk free, student centered, a place where they are valued and their thoughts are appreciated. Communication of these ideas are where you hook kids and the authentic learning happens. #edpiper
A3: Building that relationship with the students! I constantly remind them my job is to keep them safe. Even if they come to me with little things I don’t push them away because it’s not “important.” #EDpiper
A3: We all love to know what to expect, personal communication to students and parents on routines and expectations helps them prepare and feel safe! #EDpiper
R3: I agree with @WinkelerD with having time before and after school for Ss to get help. I am also sponsoring 2 (maybe 3) clubs to get Ss involved with different aspects of school. #EDpiper
A3: Students have to see you as part of their learning- you are joining them on the jouney. When the environment encourages risks, allows for mistakes, provides time for reflection, students will discover safety in their learning. #EDpiper
A3: Many learners like to know what to expect each day. Communicating ahead of time what is coming the next day, can build a connected classroom. #EDpiper
A3 my AP & I greet Ss in the morning by opening car doors during AM drop off, greeting & encouraging Ss on morning announcements, followed by checking in on students throughout the day and during lunch duty. #EDpiper
Q4. Ahhhh, patience is indeed a virtue! How do you maintain patience and teach your students to do the same? Tell us all about it by adding #EDpiper to your comments.
Yes...think it is important that we verbalize and acknowledge for our Ss when the schedule or day may change...this allows them to mentally and emotionally prepare for the change. #EDpiper
Loving this idea of video announcements to the parents! What a way to make a personal connection with the families. Especially for teachers who have multiple classes when it’s hard to build a cohesive family community. #edpiper
A3 - Beginning of year, I so desperately want routine and normalcy because it makes ME feel safe to have consistency. It is tough to establish so soon but I definitely think kiddos feed off of my mood. This is why I push them so hard BOY to learn routines. #edpiper
A4: I understand what it is like being in their shoes. We were all Ss at one point. Need to remember they don't know it all either just yet. Have to guide them. #edpiper
The meetings are such a great way to move everyone into the right direction from the beginning. Keep up the great work, Genna. We're so blessed to have you at CCE! #EDpiper
A2: I begin each of my classes with a meeting. During meeting, we discuss rules and procedures. I continuously remind and model my expectations for students. I also have a copy of rules in each students' PRIDE folder for parents to see. #EDpiper
R4: mentioned this earlier. Sometimes instead of getting irritated with a Ss behavior in class, you pull them to the hallway and have a convo with them 1:1. This is a teaching moment for them and allows the S to see you as forgiving. #EDpiper
A4: I keep the quote "mistakes are proof you are trying" posted in my room. When kids mess up, we conference. I want my children to feel safe in my room. I maintain patience in knowing that we are all learning! #EDpiper
A4: staying calm! If it doesn’t work, you assess and try again. Just like our kids need. I have to tell myself a couple of times a week that progress is being made and we are working on the work! And, that Sonic Diet Coke helps, too! #edpiper
A4: Breathing! I used focus breathing when I taught littles and brought it to my 3rd graders. They catch on and eventually realize it about themselves. Sometimes you have to just take a step back, take a deep breath, and refocus. #EDpiper
A4: I practice what I preach to my Ss- when feeling like my patience is on EMPTY, take a deep breath & count to 10. Start again b/c most of the time, it is a misunderstanding. This allows them to see me as human & someone who will ALWAYS come to them no matter what! #edpiper
My Fitbit has a breathing feature that vibrates when you’re supposed to inhale & exhale to relax. It’s crazy! It slows my heart rate every single time. #EDPiper
We do the breathing techniques from @conciousdiscipline in kinder. For me- always reminding myself they are 5 & 6. There is so much “newness” for these babies- they really are trying! #edpiper
Everyone has to know they belong and are accepted by the classroom community. Social contracts, norms, and discussions are great ways to get the message across that displaying any behavior that is hurtful to others is not tolerated. #EDpiper
Q3: How do you make your classroom feel like a safe place for students to learn and grow? Reminder: Add the hashtag #EDpiper to all responses so we can see you! #YouMatter
4th grade math and science teacher at CCE
A3, I literally just finished and posted my collage for a friend and family assignment i gave my kiddos, they share who is in their lives, we post them around the room so that we can always remember we are a community and loved
#EDpiper
A4 - Not gonna lie, I struggle with patience BOY... I thrive in routine and when it is not fully established (esp Aug and Jan) I get a little edgy. #edpiper
Sometimes I ask S to help me with patience. I like when they can tell me their feelings so I practice that too. I also keep things on a pretty tight schedule so we all know what to expect & are aware. Has helped a bunch with less frustration! #EDpiper
A2: Meet Ss and parents where they are. That means communicating in many modes. Many parents like Class Dojo, others prefer e-mail, and an old-fashioned phone call home is always welcome! Key= communicate expectations early and often to both Ss & parents. #edpiper#getonthephone
#EDpiper Q4:Patience is a SKILL! Ts must model this for Ss to SHOW them what patience looks like. Modeling helps Ts to also keep their patience "in check" when a Ts fuse feels short. Model, practice, and then stop and smell the roses! #modelpracticemodelagain
Right?! It can be set for 2 or 5 minutes. It shows a graph with your respirations & heartbeats & tells you to keep your biofeedback below the center line. The 5 min one makes me fall asleep! Need one for interactive boards! #EDPiper
Q5: How can we encourage empathy and kindness in classrooms? Reminder: Add the hashtag #EDpiper to all responses & conversation so we can see you in the chat. #youredoingGREAT
R4: We all need to remember that it is the 2-5% of Ss that try to disrupt our class 95-98% of the time. Focus on the Ss doing the right thing. Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports. #EDpiper
We do the breathing techniques from @conciousdiscipline in kinder. For me- always reminding myself they are 5 & 6. There is so much “newness” for these babies- they really are trying! #edpiper
Q4: Taking a minute and giving a minute. When students know it is safe to take a minute to regroup, and it is modeled by the teacher, it gives them a great life skill. #EDpiper
A2
We make social contracts, students come up with rules and explain why they are important, they sign them so they are taking ownership of our classroom community. I try my best to stay in constant contact with my parents, for all issues, especially positive moments!
#EDpiper
A5: Practice practice practice. Need students to trust in one another. Need them to also trust that we are in a safe environment and their thoughts will be met with positive feedback. #edpiper
R5: When I was an AP, my principal had 5 rules. One of those was “Give Respect, Get Respect”. We must demonstrate this daily. If we don’t give this and show this, how do we expect our Ss to ever demonstrate and show this?
#YouMatter
That gif is awesomeness! My rule was to never punish, scold or anything more than just a low-key redirection if I felt myself losing patience or getting snappy. Forced me to focus on my own choices first. #EDPiper
Q5: To build community in your classroom, give your students chances to help each other. Giving students the opportunity to practice behavior is one of the most effective ways to promote it. Be the nice kid! #edpiper
In my classroom, we read a lot of trade books that promote empathy and kindness. After we read, we discuss the behaviors exhibited by the characters. We then establish ways that we can apply our learning to our own classroom. We are a family! #EDpiper
A4
I model it, constantly. I'll stop and actually say, i need a minute, I'll model taking deep breaths and smile and respond. I have an essential oil necklace they always love to smell, I model using my weighted lap pads and I admit when I've made mistakes
#EDpiper
A5: Really like the message behind the @sandyhook Start With Hello Week...showing Ss that kindness starts with simply reaching out to someone who is alone. #EDpiperhttps://t.co/K0vE1wtAtt
I swear it works. I can even set it in bed and focus on the vibration that says to inhale/exhale. I can totally see it helping kids, too, like @Owl_b_TorresEdu says. #EDPiper
A3: I try to make them laugh, see me try different things, encourage and applaud them in public etc. I also hold us all accountable, set the rules and model them and give clear expectations so they know what to expect & feel safe #EDpiper
A5: I tell them every day we are a school family. We take care of each other and we love each other, even on the hard days. When the kids show kindness, We celebrate it...even if it was a small act! #EDpiper
A5: My friend @justincholbrook shared this poster today...would be great to hang in the classroom to encourage kindness and actions that build empathy. #EDpiper
My mother sent me this picture chart & it made me think about how I can incorporate these ABC actions into my daily practice as a leader & educator. Just hitting a few each day would inspire another positive story. #BmoreEdChat#CelebrateMonday#DadsAsPrincipals
R4: We all need to remember that it is the 2-5% of Ss that try to disrupt our class 95-98% of the time. Focus on the Ss doing the right thing. Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports. #EDpiper
Q5: There are so many books that teachers can read to their students about empathy and kindness. Literature is a great way to model behaviors. #EDpiper

A4 - Not gonna lie, I struggle with patience BOY... I thrive in routine and when it is not fully established (esp Aug and Jan) I get a little edgy. #edpiper
A6: Trust in the classroom is HUGE! Consistency allows for Ss to see that they are all loved equally and held accountable! I model trust for them in their being responsible for important tasks in the classroom as well! They ❤️ that! #EDpiper
A6: I am fair and consistent with my procedures, rewards and consequences. My Ss know what they are going to get from me. They also know that I will always give them another chance to do the right thing! #EDpiper
R6: Trust is established when Ts admit mistakes, admit they need help, and take responsibility for their actions. I remember a T from HS that called me out for something. Never apologized and humiliated me in front of a class of 30. Promised never to do this to my Ss #EDpiper
In my classroom, we read a lot of trade books that promote empathy and kindness. After we read, we discuss the behaviors exhibited by the characters. We then establish ways that we can apply our learning to our own classroom. We are a family! #EDpiper
A5 our counselor gives weekly kindness messages school wide on video announcements. We have our kindness ambassadors through our Kindness Club. As a Principal I ask Ss what kind act have they done for a new S or how have they help include a new student to our school. #EDpiper
That the thing - you still remember being humiliated by a teacher back in your high school days, years ago. Teachers have such power to make a difference one way or another. So glad you’re making a positive difference for your students! #EDPiper
WU: Let Ss have a day in their projects, rules, and expectations. You get more buy-in when Ss have a voice in what happens with their learning. #EDpiper
Thanks for joining us on #EDpiper tonight. It was awesome to get so many great ideas crammed into one hour as we discussed R.E.S.P.E.C.T. in the classroom! Here's the lead-up blog in case you missed it: https://t.co/C3TWWWgR4k
See you next Monday night at 9PM on #EDpiper!
Ss look to us as examples. When we model positivity and respect, our Ss begin to develop those same characteristics. Just as we teach reading and writing, we must also teach our Ss how to respect themselves and others. #EDpiper
Build relationships with your staff and students so that no matter what they feel safe enough to fail forward knowing they are supported along the way. #EdPiper
Hey, #EDpiper fans. Have you ever considered being a guest moderator on this chat? We'd love to have you lead a chat this year. Let one of us know if you feel like hosting a session. #EDpiper
#edpiper Growing respect in a classroom looks like: Ss cheering on other Ss, Ts encouraging Ss when they try and get it wrong the first time, Ts model respect with their words. Nothing sweeter than hearing Ss pick their classmates when they fall. #RESPECT#failforward
