A1: Incorpating computer science into K-8 curriculum provides early access and exposure. With continued use and growth Ss become natural digital learnersand producers, prepared for HS and beyond ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป #lcpsedchat

@BrendaHomer_GPE Glad to have you with us tonight! #LCPSEDchat
  • MiriamCheuk Dec 6 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: Integrating Computer Science into the curriculum for students in grades K-8 is beneficial as it enhances critical thinking, logic, collaboration, problem solving/innovation and other 21st century skills. #LCPSedChat
  • BrendaHomer_GPE Dec 6 @ 8:08 PM EST
Looking to embedded Computer Science into PBL #lcpsedchat

Q1: Behind our selection of digital tools in the classrooms is the purpose of use. How are you using digital tools so students can access information? #LCPSedChat
  • attipscast - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: The power of digital tools is in the options it provides. Not everyone has to do the same thing the same way. With CS being integrated early, students learn this power first hand & from the start! #LCPSEDchat #NotAnAfterThought #designthinking
  • onyxviper Dec 6 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1 I think that when we integrate coding and curriculum that the thinking / skills that one needs to be successful as a coder become a part of the culture of the classroom. #LCPSEDchat
  • jbreynoldsTRT - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: Having students start thinking in steps and problems solving will enable greater growth in HS #LCPSedChat
  • onyxviper Dec 6 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 Its is those habits of thought that we really want our students to internalize and apply across a wide range of problems. #LCPSEDchat
  • jbreynoldsTRT - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:12 PM EST
Q2: How do you distinguish Computational Thinking, Computer Science, and Coding? #LCPSedChat
  • TheRealPAwesome Dec 6 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: Computer Science in the K-8 curriculum is the opportunity for us to provide true opportunities for creativity and innovation which is going to make a huge impact in the world as these Ss enter the future workforce with those skills. #LCPSEDchat
  • attipscast - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: Logic is fundamental to critical thinking. You can't do computer science without using/learning logic. Practicing/learning computer science = practicing/learning critical thinking skills. #LCPSEDchat
  • onyxviper Dec 6 @ 8:13 PM EST
@jbreynoldsTRT You are right, having students come into their high schools ready to and equipped to tackle computational problems would be awesome. #LCPSEDchat
  • SusZanti5 Dec 6 @ 8:13 PM EST
A2: They are interrelated and somewhat interdependent, Ss need to be computational thinkers to effectively learn/implement coding and the skill set emcompassed by computer science #lcpsedchat
  • attipscast - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:14 PM EST
    Totally!...and beyond! #LCPSEDchat
    In reply to @jbreynoldsTRT
  • onyxviper Dec 6 @ 8:14 PM EST
I like the focus on creating. If students don't know the "language" of coding they are denied the opportunity to create using that language. #LCPSEDchat
    In reply to @TheRealPAwesome
  • MiriamCheuk Dec 6 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: Computational Thinking is a strategy that breaks down into smaller pieces, identifies patterns, abstracts & defines the steps to solve problems (algorithms).Coding is the computer language & Computer Science= study of computer hardware & software design. #LCPSedChat
  • onyxviper Dec 6 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: I am not sure I can draw defined lines between computational thinking and computer science and coding. That is making my brain hurt this evening. #LCPSEDchat
  • jbreynoldsTRT - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2. CT is required to truely develop in CS as a coder. Coders can write the programs. for CS you get into what is going with the systems and how they relate. #LCPSEDchat
  • onyxviper Dec 6 @ 8:18 PM EST
That helps me a bit to see how they are facets of each other. #LCPSEDchat
    In reply to @MiriamCheuk
  • attipscast - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: Most anyone can drag blocks around to make a random product. This could be considered coding. This doesn't mean you are necessarily using computational thinking. Designing & problem solving to get to a desired result would be a part of computational thinking. #LCPSEDchat
  • jbreynoldsTRT - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:21 PM EST
Q3: What are some of the programs or platforms that you use in your classroom to integrate computer science into your lessons? #LCPSedChat
  • SusZanti5 Dec 6 @ 8:21 PM EST
A3: The answers to this are as varied as voice and choice, seems that Ts & Ss gravitate to those programs that meet their needs for curiousity, critical thinking and engagement! #lcpsedchat
  • attipscast - Moderator Dec 6 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3: We used Blockly & Path from @WonderWorkshop this week to help students w/ autism learn vocabulary words like GO, TURN, & PLAY. #LCPSEDchat
  • TheRealPAwesome Dec 6 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3: @scratch for sure! There are so many more, but I love me some scratch. Oh, and Flappy Birds on @hourofcode ! Wait, I think maybe I'm supposed to be talking about Ss and not programs I enjoy tinkering with. #LCPSEDchat
  • onyxviper Dec 6 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3 I have enjoyed watching my own kids play with Minecraft Edu and the built in coding mechanism. They enjoy being able to manipulate and automate the world around them with block coding. #LCPSEDchat
  • TechyMargaret Dec 6 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3 I think we automatically think programs and apps - but there are offline lessons to develop computational thinking. You can find a whole list of unplugged activities here #LCPSEDchat https://t.co/idm4PulTWG

  • TechyMargaret Dec 6 @ 8:28 PM EST
This was our topic for #novaedchat last night too! What I learned and love sharing with students who are new to coding and computational thinking is this #LCPSedChat
  • SusZanti5 Dec 6 @ 8:28 PM EST
A4: PL and PBL are the perfect vehicles for Ss to connect to their computer science skill set, critical thinking, collaboration, exploration, relevant purpose, and creativeity meld PL, PBL and CS to produce Ss authentic learning #lcpsedchat
