#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
@KeeneeLou hello! My name is Melissa Stucky. I am a school based speech language pathologist in South Beloit, IL. My favorite board game is chutes and ladders #Kinderchat
We are going to play tonight! You are going to need a piece of paper and something to write with! BTW, here’s the link to the article we will be referencing tonight!

Hi all! My name is Amanda Arnold and I am currently in college for behavior analysis! Hope to be working with little ones once its all finished :)

Okay #kinderchat friends,
are you ready!!
At the beginning of the article, there is a quote from George Bernard Shaw. Here’s the last part of the phrase:
“…we grow old because we stop playing”.
In the spirit of play, could you please get a piece of paper and a pen or pencil or marker or crayon.
Take the next 5 minutes and play around!
At 7:20 MST, if you would like, take a picture of your playful creation and share it with us all.
#kinderchat
I would 110% be all over this, and would even get multi-coloured pens to really get into it, if there was not a dog sound asleep in my lap at this moment! #kinderchat
Okay here's the first question!
Q1: This article states that play supports “the complex process of creating crucial life skills”.
What skills did the paper/pencil activity support?
#kinderchat
Well. It's my pastor, the kids, and I playing basketball (as we do a lot!) at our youth ministry I volunteer with 😂😭😂😭 Only thing I could think of drawing 😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀 #Kinderchat
Anytime we put our hand to a writing utensil and allow it to create, we wake up synapses in our brains. the hand is directly connected to the brain, so at the very least we’ve woken up a portion our brain that was asleep #kinderchat
I think that this activity was a great way to stimulate creativity, and overall inventiveness! Something that I think is really challenging for adults and kids alike many times. #Kinderchat#edu435
A1: Paper/pencil activity supported so much creativity and fun! I honestly can't remember the last time I just doodled for fun! It can help come up with new ideas and projects fro their classwork or studying. Theres so many possibilities! @barbersclass#barbersclass#Kinderchat
Q2: Seymour Papert is quoted in the article:
“Rather than pushing children to think like adults, we might do better to remember that they are great learners and try harder to be more like them”.
How do you support this idea in the classroom? #kinderchat
"By playing, children discover the world around them & how it operates, how things work & the way ppl function...develop lang. skills, learn how to coop. w/ others, discover emo. intell. & how to think creatively as well as find solutions to problems." #kinderchat Let them play!
Oh yeah, I use to color a lot growing up, when I have the spare time I still do in one of those crazy books. It can be super relaxing and get your mind off of things. @barbersclass#barbersclass#Kinderchat

I am working with educators in Yellowknife NWT and one is look for ideas on "Play-Based Learning" in Kindergarten. Any ideas? Links? People to follow? #Kinderchat
A2: I don't have classroom but I want to say that I stopped doing what kids should do to try and build up a career for when I'm an adult wayyyyy too early as a early teen and honestly -- I'm feeling the effects of it still. #Kinderchat
A2: this idea can be supported in the classroom by allowing them to make mistakes! We are so quick to stop kids b4 they make a mistake. As long as they aren’t going to hurt themself or someone else, what’s the problem with not using enough glue, for example? #Kinderchat
A2) I have taken the time to listen to what my students are talking about during free choice and writing time. I've also worked on giving just enough information to give ideas but not so much that takes away creativity #kinderchat

Q2: As a student, I am very curious to see what some of responses It saddens me the number of kindergarten classrooms I have observed that have very little play. Teachers have so much curriculum to get through and "no time" for play. Whats your take? #Kinderchat#edu435
A2: I think the best way is to allow students to be individuals. To actually seek and listen to their ideas. Letting them know that their thoughts are valuable.
#kinderchat
Yes! I wonder this all the time as an observer in many classrooms. Kids learn more from making mistakes than getting things perfect the first time around. #Kinderchat#edu435
This is often the bane of teaching. I would say that the more deeply you know the curriculum, the better you are at embedding it into playful inquiry! #kinderchat
A2:Kids grow up so fast & life is so hard as is you need to try to make things childish as long as possible! I would encourage play, doodling, making mistakes & ask them what they think, maybe make up some learning activities! @barbersclass#barbersclass#kinderchat
And it's something that I'm not even gonna be paid for in my adult life anyway. Sports journalism is an awesome thing to be around as I enjoy the relationships and such that I have but the paid environment of it is quickly diminishing #Kinderchat
Ah Seymour! Great guy! Fun Fact: He was instrumental in 1:1 computers for students in the state of Maine! He was a fascinating man. ANYWAY! As a 21st Century Teach I am always mindful that my students and I R co-learners in life. They teach me as much as I teach them! #kinderchat
A2. In the classroom I think we need to allow children a chance to get it wrong, to learn how to play and learn from their play. I think we as adults want right answers and don't allow children the opportunity to explore the wrong answer #KInderchat
A2 Love the doodling! Sorry I'm late. Having taught at an inquiry-based sch for 20 yrs, I constantly remind myself to let the Ss be the Ts. Anytime I can share thg responsibilities with them, we all grow! Now, they're tchg from their photos of counting collections. #kinderchat
A2: Since the beginning, I was shocked to see how little time Ss have to play in many K classrooms today compared to what I experienced 20 years ago. Human brains haven't evolved that much in 20 yrs, so I make it a priority to incorporate play as often as possible.
#kinderchat
Risk taking is the flip side of play. Play is how we learn and how we synthesize life. If we aren’t risk taking in play, we won’t be risk takers in the classroom, in life, etc. Did you know all mammals play? It’s how we survive, literally and figuratively #kinderchat
Nope, not necessarily! Risk is just doing something that scares us. Could be big- like jumping out of a plane, or small, like going up to someone and saying hi! Risk taking in play gives us confidence in life #kinderchat
I love risk taking activities!! As you both know -- I didn't risk take enough as a kid so I've done numerous things over the the last four years or so that I thought I'd hate as a kid #KinderChat
A3: There's a freedom of being a risk taker while playing. Mistakes are not a concern, because you know that you have an opportunity to try again. It's a chance to learn to be adaptable and have a willingness to try new things and new ways of problem solving.
#kinderchat
Q3: Risk taking in play is the safest place for students to figure things out for themselves. I love how so many people have acknowledged that risk taking doesnt necessarily mean risky. #Kinderchat#edu435
@eduwearonline provides educational clothing designed to focus on the child’s intellectual, social, and emotional development.
Patches are REMOVABLE and interchangeable. #kinderchat
A3:Risks new what keeps things interesting and keeps things fun and new. If you take a risk, yes you may fail but you always have the opportunity to try again! Taking risks ensures you learning and experiencing new things in life. @barbersclass#barbersclass#Kinderchat
Q4: The article says that, as adults, “being playful makes us happier, more open-minded, more creative, better able to bond with other people…”
As an adult, are you playful? (Thanks for keeping this completely G-rated) #kinderchat
A3) Because we have to try new things in order to grow and learn. We also have to learn to collaborate and try new things as adults in our careers. #kinderchat
The article says companies are desperate for employees who can be risk takers and for problem solvers who come up with new and innovative solutions.
Q3: Why is being a risk taker so important when playing? #risktaker

Did you or did you not say keep it G rated ;)
Seriously though, I love to play. I love hanging out with the 5-6 year old crowd. Keeps you young. #kinderchat
A4: Definitely! It really helps when you have a 3 year old in your life (nephew). As well as friends and partner who are all just all 4 yo. It really helps when it comes to bonding with each other and it just creates a happier environment @barbersclass#barbersclass#kinderchat
A3: The more we (both children & adults) become accustomed to risk-taking, the more confident we become in a variety of situations. Play is one of the first introductions to risk-taking that children will have.
#kinderchat
A4: YES!!! I go over and shoot hoops over at this basketball/tennis court about three times a week. Also do whatever the kids do at the youth ministry. I also enjoy indoor rock climbing, swinging, running, swimming, dodgeball, etc. #KinderChat
