Good evening! I'm Heidi from KY. Tonight I'm honored to introduce @darrenhause our guest host, who'll lead our #DeafEd discussion in teaching in content areas.
Cara from FL. I am the Deaf Education & Transition Coordinator for @rmtcdhh which provides outreach PD and Tech Support for TODs in FL. #DeafEd#RMTCDHH#deaftec
Q1: What are some of your favorite ASL-English bilingual strategies in teaching in a content area (i.e. social studies, math, science subjects)? #DeafEd
Hello all, Lauren here from the Los Angeles Unified School District as a transition teacher & on the board of @CaledOrg Looking forward to tonight's chat! #DeafEd
Shelena Marsh, teacher in Vancouver, Canada at @bcsdburnaby, @caedhh board member, @csunorthridge alum. Happy New Year everyone! Hoping to get some more Canadians in the loop about the chat tonight! #deafed
A1: Flipped classroom is my favorite strategy. Have #DDBDDHH view content videos in ASL at home, and come to class for enriching activities and support in reading/writing. #DeafEd
Q1: What are some of your favorite ASL-English bilingual strategies in teaching in a content area (i.e. social studies, math, science subjects)? #DeafEd
I've done a modified flip to help support Ss who can't watch at home/dorm 1 center w/ "view", 1 small group w/ me, and 1 center for ind. application #deafed
A1: Have students discuss and research about civil right movements through ASL and English resources, which then turns into an ASL/English script and shown on stage. Stories coming to life are the best! #DeafEd
Flipgrid and voicethread are great interactive tools where the student has multiple options to respond: ASL, spoken language, or typed. #DeafEd#rmtcdhh
A1: Using visuals (photo, video, an object), along with the sign and written word SO effective. My kiddos write a daily journal about their day. First we reflect and discuss, record/copy the vocab, then they write a response. It connects written vocab to content EVERYDAY #deafed
A2: #DeafEd credentials place less emphasis on teaching in content areas. My challenge was learning how to teach social studies, which is completely a different ball game despite my BA in Political Science & Geography.
A2: There is a plethora of videos for content areas. However, many are not captioned. I will keep saying this and writing about it again and again until it happens. We need a ASL version of @khanacademy#DeafEd
I wrote about it here. When Plain Video is Not Enough. How educational videos fail teachers of the DHH and their students. https://t.co/eO4bTHGofU#DeafEd
Hi there! Take a look at our How to join a Twitter chat in #ASL. Really you just use the search of #DeafEd. Then follow the conversation and answer questions making sure to add in #DeafEd after your answers. https://t.co/UFEm2UZvkt

A2: finding resources that match my kids reading level. I often have to be very creative in finding early grade level resources, and then adapting them to higher level content. It works but can take a lot of time. #deafed
A2: Curriculum not designed for visual learners to begin with. Educators constantly having to translate from English to ASL. And even more so, materials usually from a monolingual/ Eurocentric POV. Not enough stories reflect our students. #DeafEd
YES YES YES! This is a huge challenge. Visuals are so helpful, but because they are spoken and kids struggle to read CC, the information is missed. ASL @khanacademy would be amazing #deafed

so true. #DeafEd training has historically and currently focused on rote education, and our kids are deprived of content-rich instruction because of this.
I know a deaf man, former #DeafEd teacher in WA state who actually had this idea and tried to get a grant to do it. No such luck. It is still his dream.
A3: https://t.co/mbIsuiu5Tk Provides workshops for TOD and STEM Gen Ed teachers in person in CA, FL, TX, and IL. Resources online if you want to do a self-study. #deaftec#rmtcdhh#DeafEd
A2: definitely varying degrees of background/world knowledge. the struggle of leveling up stdnts from hearing/non-signing families w/ kids frm L1 ASL families... tough. #DeafEd
i have noticed my kiddos rush thru Newsela- i feel many articles require lots of pre-teaching, can't be used in the way they are designed to w/ other students. #DeafEd
A3 - I would say conferences are usually the best places. Sadly, a majority focus on general population. Yet, you can modify for #DeafEd. There ARE a few good #DeafEd conferences.
A3: Twitter chats give #DDBDDHH teachers an even playing field, unlike trainings/conferences where we need interpreters/accommodations. Staying at home in pajamas is a plus! #DeafEd
integrate teacher education during the school week- i have a vision of having prof dev curriculum for teachers where we can brainstorm, exchange resources, provide feedback, etc. no more working in isolation. #DeafEd
Another #DeafEd conference coming up is in California, March 23-25, 2018 in Sacramento! We welcome all educators to join us there! Check out https://t.co/kFlHQMO84N for more information. And follow us at @CaledOrg

A4: STEM Education. Content in isolation is ineffective and usually not connected to real world issues. STEM can be and is incorporating all subjects together. #STEM#DeafEd See this site - https://t.co/6YvqK3KjS0
That is fascinating. The question, though, will it be merely interpretations of the videos or actual designing deaf friendly ASL videos? Big difference
@deafkidscode Shireen can you explain? This is Heidi from KY. Same one on microcredential call with Nick, and Ron #DeafEd
A4: One idea I'm stealing from #engsschat Constitution Day last year: have students write a new constitution for the marooned boys in “Lord of the Flies” #DeafEd#crosscurricular
PLCs/teacher collaboration = so important & beneficial! Do you find PLC time becomes dept. mtg. time? Finding it difficult to collaborate sometimes when secondary Ts may be the only T for that content. #DeafEd
My favorite way to teach is thematically. I sometimes go overboard and decorate my entire classroom in theme. I have the hot glue scar to prove it LOL #DeafEd
My favorite way to teach is thematically. I sometimes go overboard and decorate my entire classroom in theme. I have the hot glue scar to prove it LOL #DeafEd
Here's a funny fact about me. In my first three years of teaching, I taught math, science, English, and ASL. In 4th year, I finally got to teach government! #DreamsDoComeTrue#deafed
A3: I really hope one day that conferences like @caled@caedhh@nad can be accessed online! Its financially impossible to travel to conferences, but paying a lesser fee to access online would increase the #'s internationally to exchange ideas and knowledge #deafed
A5: There are many opportunities to link Deaf history & culture in social studies classes. @csdriverside has excellent corpus of primary & secondary sources videos in ASL. #DeafEd#csdr#csdrkindness

Are people reading my mind tonight!?! I was about to say schools need to increase the corpus of materials for their subjects. Start internally! #DeafEd
When the chat is over, please take 12 minutes of your evening to watch this Year in Review video from @behearddc Be moved, be inspired, be motivated by what HEARD has accomplished. https://t.co/QDvTJrnQ1X#DeafEd#DeafEducation
A5: The power of technology allows us to invite a variety of deaf role models into our classroom with tools like Skype or google hangouts. Invite deaf professionals in your class. #DeafEd#rmtcdhh
this is where i say: teacher's value systems & their personal relationships will reflect their ability to create multifaceted resources for diverse DDBDDHH stdnts. #DeafEd
Q5: Asking questions, listening with eyes wide open, inviting authentic role models, and removing own bias to ensure that curriculums reflect the stories of everyone's histories. Incorporate contributions made by different communities if their stories aren't there. #DeafEd
A6: Some #DDBDDHH students do not have authentic experiences growing up. Teachers can provide authentic experiences by going on field trips and making connections to daily life outside of classroom #DeafEd
A6: AEM! We need to start demanding that publishers interpret textbooks and articles into ASL to make the instructional materials accessible like text to speech for hearing students. #DeafEd#rmtcdhh#AEM
This can backfire if there are not great interpreters. Ideally, Ss can get the level of education they need through direct communication in a class with a DHH teacher. #DeafEd
A5: Provide constant opportunities to have dialogues among teachers on how we can ensure #DeafEd pedagogy is culturally relevant throughout. Reflect often with colleagues AND with students.
And this can start at a young age. I would take my class to downtown and just point out and teach them basic things - how a traffic light works, what the different street signs mean, play scavenger hunt to find the tallest building or the store with a table out front #DeafEd
This can backfire if there are not great interpreters. Ideally, Ss can get the level of education they need through direct communication in a class with a DHH teacher. #DeafEd
A6: ensure students have opportunity to apply and experience the content to real life. Community and parent support are key to support students application of knowledge and language to reduce barriers. #deafed
And continue thru high school. So many Deaf role models out there. in wonderful careers from PHD to blue collar. They need to see that success can be attained! #DeafEd
A5: Going to conferences is also impt. I went to @councildemanos national conference back in October, and I learned so much. I've reflected since then and have become much more aware with how I teach. #DeafEd
A7: Share share share! A group of us created a website for teachers to share resources they created. It's just a bit too much time for us to maintain so it has been dormant. Maybe one day we will get back to it. #DeafEd
A7: By making our resources open to public! Thanks to Mr. Behm’s math videos on YouTube, I was able to do flipped classroom when I taught math. #DeafEdhttps://t.co/hO82tyo3Re
A7: Networking! Teachers have the best ideas. In my travels throughout the SE, I have picked up great ideas from teachers out there. They are always willing to share! #DeafEd
This is absolutely incredible! A dream coming true!
Thank you @deafkidscode for sharing this information. I can guarantee everyone in the #DeafEd chat and hundreds of others will be thrilled with this news!
We are collaborating w the brilliant folks at NTID who will take charge of teaching the subjects in ASL. They will not be interpreted, but rather taught/ conveyed in its authenticity. @heidigasl
A7: #DeafEd teacher prep programs shift to this goal instead of allowing theses to waste away in univ libraries. emphasize developing resources to use immediately in the classroom.
A7: We need to start filming ourselves teaching . We need to point out how we use bilingual strategies. One teacher from @FSDB_PD@FLDeaf_Blind have been doing that. We need more. #DeafEd
A7: I would love one day to see something like Teachers Pay T's but for #deafed. I see more schools uploading videos :), see below: https://t.co/7xQ5psC5uLhttps://t.co/VrluhgwWlg
I would love to see more video uploading from each of us to build the pool of resources.
I love watching her videos.Great strategies. More of us need to do that. I found old VHS videos of me modeling different teaching strategies about 15 years ago! We need more! #DeafEd
