#Satchat is a weekly Twitter conversation for current and emerging school leaders that takes place every Saturday morning at 7:30 EST. Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
Good morning and welcome to #Satchat. Today we talk about designing collaborative PD programs. Guest moderator: @participate. Please introduce yourself.

A1: I think we could improve on the culture for collaborative learning in our schools where professional reading, writing, talking, coaching and collaboration are simply part of the norm. More time for such work wouldn't hurt either! #satchat
Good morning! Amber from Cary, NC. Title 1 blended prek teacher. Looking forward to learning with my PLT team this year, especially @JuneHaggy and @mrslewitt

Good morning #satchat crew. Latoya, checking in from SC this morning. Will be in and out as I am attending and presenting later at @The_SCAMLE conference. Excited to hear @casas_jimmy this morning!
A1: Disconnect or lack of ability to have something to take back immediately are some of the biggest issues I see with current PD. Also there is rarely time for me to plan how I might use it with my Ss. Need reflection time #satchat
I would love if you could add #preservicelit to your list! The first Saturday of every month at 9am EST! Preservice teachers, education students, teacher educators and mentors come together to lift up the profession! #SATchat
A1) Many struggles I see with current PD systems is that many of them aren't interactive. Just like students, adults need to be motivated to learn as well! #satchat#edu5720
A1: I think we could improve on creating a culture for professional learning where teachers read, write, talk, coach and collaborate together as the norm. More time for this work wouldn't hurt either! #satchat
Sure is. The Dream Big and Collaborative pieces drew me in. Excited to hear what folks have to say about this. We need to dream big here...and collaborate...with ALL stakeholders. Including the most important: our students. #satchat#howiparticipate
A1 there is a disconnect between what teachers need and want versus the PD providers expectations. Workshop facilitators do not gauge what their participants know and master #satchat
A1. One size fits none. Most traditional PD is a one-off lecture to a large group with a well-intentioned PowerPoint. Assuming all learn at the same pace. Using the same low-impact pedagogy in an attempt to encourage teachers to evolve their own. Telling, not showing. #satchat
A1 Current PD often provides training on new initiatives, from division level admin down to schools then down to teachers. Little room for choice of topic or pursuing areas of need or interest. And it's all one way, no feedback loop #satchat
A1 Many current PD involves spending money to bring in a guru. Teachers listen to a presentation rather than interacting with each other, learning experientially, or making stuff they can actually use. Or there’s no follow-through. #satchat
We are so used to the idea that PD means sit-and-listen, that it can be difficult to disrupt old habits with collaborative and experiential learning for teachers #satchat
A1 Technology gives us the ability to collaborate easily with others to create meaningful PD. Need to use it more for PD. My Professional Development page https://t.co/EYf2WP39Rn My Professional Learning page https://t.co/8Guh722Y3Q#satchat#edchat
This is a big issue. This leads to lack of participation and desire to implement in the classroom no matter how good the material/structures are. #satchat
A1: When PD is mandated, we don't give teachers the same respect we offer students when we encourage choice and self-directed learning- seems absurd when we know the amazing effects owning our learning can have on students #satchat
A1. Interaction! The way we interact with students is way different from how a mentor would interact with educators. Educators are just as much students of the world, continuously changing and evolving as new methods are introduced in order to keep up. #satchat
A1: Current issues with PD is that topics/activities are too overwhelming and it's not relevant. Just like in a classroom, relevancy plays a factor in motivation. #satchat
A1: Too often PD is driven by trends rather than the individual or collective needs of the receivers-PD must be tailored to the needs of the learners in the room, specific, relevant, high-interest, and most importantly, necessary for growth! #satchat
A1: Is love to see more of a@commitment to long term PD. Many one and done workshops out there, which are sometimes okay, but longer series of workshops often make the most change #satchat
A1: In person, it is SO hard to find a time that busy educators can meet and do in depth PD. And to improve practice, there is a need for follow up meetings to discuss what is and isn't working. Not enough hours in the day. #satchat
A1- the biggest struggle that I see is that there is no/very limited choice. PD is always chosen for teachers. We want teachers to provide student choice in learning, we must model that same practice. #satchat
Yesterday, one of my "difficult" students was upset. I tried for a few minutes to find out what was wrong. He would not even make eye contact. Since he was doing his work, I let him be. I went to my computer and typed out a note in Spanish to him.
A1 current PD opportunities generally do not allow for enough choice, active involvement, and product at the end of the PD. Something that you can use immediately the next day in your classroom. #satchat
Kathy, Principal in NJ usually home with 3yr old watching Mr. Rogers & missing satchats, is joining from the TCNJ parking lot waiting to start a weekend @ECET2NJPA conference! #satchat
A1: Seeing more voice, more interaction, & less sit & get, but still lacking great personalization. Ts want to customize their growing process. #satchat
A1: Can be expensive, doesn't meet the needs of individual learners, not enough support in terms of time and money to attend, and follow through. #satchat
A1 Many times focus is on breadth not depth within a school. Attending conferences doesn't always result in sustained application, and educators are all strapped for time to engage #satchat
A1: They aren’t personalized. They often push an agenda by administrators without polling or seeing what teachers need/want/wish for. IF you have an agenda you need to push, no worries bc I get that. My advice: open PD with a group theme/tagline to unify ur message #satchat
We keep telling teachers they have to teach differently, but we train the same. Change and innovation can’t be fully realized until we change the way we model- the way we PD #satchat
A1 please don’t do death by PowerPoint. I need interaction I need to sit with people from other schools and learn from them. I want my WSL to ask hard questions that make me think #satchat
A1: It starts with the mindset. There needs to be a recognition that Teachers collaborating with Teachers (kind of like what we are doing right now) is the best form of professional development. Top down is to limited and can't keep up. #satchat
#satchat A1: This one isn't a surprise: One size does NOT fit all. As a KNG teacher, I can be stuck with PD content that is much more relevant for others.
A1: Not everyone attends PD given by the professionals. Send a few teachers and they come back to train the rest of the staff. 1/2 day training does not make anyone an expert. #satchat
A1: The fact that a) pd is not tailored to needs of individuals or small groups and b) current pd creates a negative attitude towards growing are ares to be addressed. #satchat
A1 Stakeholders must share a vision of teaching and learning; PD provides conversation and practice toward advancing that vision; without shared purpose no one is growing #satchat
A1 Technology gives us the ability to collaborate easily with others to create meaningful PD. Need to use it more for PD. My Professional Development page https://t.co/EYf2WP39Rn My Professional Learning page https://t.co/8Guh722Y3Q#satchat#edchat
PD reminds me a little of bad tech integration in terms of separation. 'Today is a PD day' or 'I'm doing a tech lesson today'. Should be PD (growth) all the time, and tech should be invisible. #satchat
#satchat A1: I like the way we do PD at my (fantastic) school -- it's most often personal choice. Around the US, it's often state or district mandated PD. That's the struggle.
#satchat Morning y’all. Emily from still dark Houston, TX. Elementary music (K-5) and tech junkie. Up early with my toddler and was intrigued by this chat.
A1: The biggest struggle is the lack of collaboration. If PDs were as collaborative and engaging as these twitter chats, they would be much better. #satchat
A1: Current PD systems are not tailored to the needs of educators. Some districts and organizations have caught on and give educators opportunities to enhance their effectiveness in unique ways. Unfortunately most have not which ultimately hurts students #satchat
A1: Oftentimes teachers get general, overarching PD that is touchy feely, but does not have teeth. Nothing to really dig into and use immediately. #satchat
A1: Sadly, our teachers far too often receive "sit and get" PD. T's are asked not to teach this way but often times they still receive this type of professional development. We've got to change our approach. The @EdcampUSA model is very effective. #satchat
A1: PD doesn't always model the best practices we are asking T to use: need to: flip, make interactive; focus on goals; ask T for feedback; personalize
#satchat
A1: Sustainability- educators need the learning to happen in the realities of their classrooms, not necessarily a workshop. I echo more choice and collaboration as well. #satchat
Follow through is the biggest thing for me. Attend a staff meeting, conference, or workshop - get that buzz of excitement, but what happens a day, week, month later? We have to build continually #satchat
This is a good idea. We do this at staff meetings after Ts return from a conference. They have time to put together a quick presentation/activity and show how diff. subject areas can use ideas. #satchat
A1 Like anything- time! Having a PD day here, a 1/2 day there, a faculty meeting a month, etc. - I'd like 3-5 days a week 4 at least 1 hour w/educators w/out students. Then specific goals, relationships & results may occur. PLC is a mindset & built on relationships-time! #satchat
A1) Lacking an alignment (laser focus) with school goals and the understanding of "why" with collaborative planning involved of staff - "All In" #satchat
A1: I think time is the biggest issue and getting people to be interested in a new idea. My goal is to find ways to get colleagues to share their ideas more with each other. People are more willing to do something if there was success already. #satchat
A1: they’re focused around standardized testing instead of the whole student. Instead of PD empowering educators, it usually makes them leave feeling deflated. #satchat
A1 1) we seldom apply what we know abt adult learning 2)deep learning & transfer into practice isn’t the end in mind 3) time for teachers to learn is not a value proposition in US school schedules #satchat
A1: the PD is meaningful and quality but dispersed is chunks without time to collaborate on the preparation and integration outside of individual practice. #Satchat
Struggles with PD are not unlike challenges with teaching and learning in schools. Neither can be treated as "events". Learning of any kind is a process. #satchat
A1: When PD is mandated, we don't give teachers the same respect we offer students when we encourage choice and self-directed learning- seems absurd when we know the amazing effects owning our learning can have on students #satchat
#satchat a1 Not giving Ts time to absorb & apply the learning. Budget timelines & consultant avail. kind of dictate PD timelines which can lead to overload. All awesome PD but nd time to digest...
A1. We forget all we know about teaching and learning when it comes to PD. It isn’t one size fits all. It needs to feel connected I the learner. Differentiated. Interactive. Engaging. Timely. #satchat
A1: Relevancy to their own classroom and interests; feeling like you have to start something completely new. TIME! Need more time to take in relevant PD #satchat
I never liked "mandated" training. The difference between a room full of people who need to be there vs a room of people who want to be there because they are interested, curious, want to know more, ready to use it in their classrooms... #satchat
A1 I see a need to purposefully structure follow and reflection, differentiation is lacking, as well as choice, and most of it is still sit and get. #satchat#CollaborativePD
A1 - Traditional PD can be disconnected from reality. It is usually planned from the top down, and it's unknown if it every makes an impact on instruction or student achievement. #SATCHAT
A1. Hopefully many have read the valuable aspects mention in @RACzyz book and are beginning to put them into place in their schools/Districts? #satchat
Professional Development also seems to be a fire hose solution hoping the blast effects some instead of a concentrated spray on a tool or info teachers actually need #satchat
A1: Having to drive after school to go to a session that you just don't have the energy for, and sessions created for content to be shared - not as a learning experience. #SatChat
A1: Also, much of current PD lacks a consistent focus for a school year...and if it stays consistent, it is often repetitive and doesn't build into something greater. #satchat
A1: Current PD Issues = balancing the need to get in mandatory PD with the desire to infuse more choice for educators. The balance is definitely a challenge.
#satchat
A1: PD that follows trends rather than meeting the needs of your school community. There is also lack of follow through...do it once and never revisit for review or concerns. #satchat
A1 troubles with current PD days, in most cases, is lack of choice. It’s all sit and get. Let’s model what we want to see in classrooms—choice and voice. Why I think EdCamps and conferences are so popular. #satchat
morning is a wonderfull theo from God, if still recognised it means you are blessed! then have a massive day with family and friends too …. good morning
#SaturdayMorning#satchat
The problem is we rely too much on the system ... we need to be learners instead of complainers. ... many teachers are what we complain about our students. "They can't do anything without being told." #satchat
A1: TIME! As in a classroom of students, there is a range of needs and interests within a faculty. We want voice and choice within some shared outcomes! #satchat
Hi! I Am Faith, and I teach technology in Alabama. PD was something I have spent a lot of time thinking about the past few months. The way PD is delivered most of the time, needs to change! #satchat
A1: More teacher voice and choice! I want to be able to use twitter chats, Voxer groups and things like the #IMMOOC for renewal hours! Neded to work with the PD department at my district to #makeithappen#satchat
Good Morning #satchat I see you #bfc530 tweeps:)
I had forced PD for 2nd yr Ts last week in district. Such a waste of my time. We were all lumped together vets & noobs alike:(
PD needs to be individualized. You know like we do for our Ss.
I think tech use is key as it allows for just in time PD as well as PD which fits in with teacher interests, workload, etc. Twitter is part of this. Am not sure what I would do without twitter these days.
#satchat
A1. Are we truly being responsive to our learners most urgent learning needs? Or are we being responsive to their learning needs 6 months ago? #satchat
A1: Current issues with PD is that topics/activities are too overwhelming and it's not relevant. Just like in a classroom, relevancy plays a factor in motivation. #satchat
A1) Not content specific. With about 1,000 kids running through my room, need things that work with my type of classroom, not standard classroom. Need reflection time to process! #satchat
A1: PD that isn't customized to teachers who may be the only ones in their building teaching their content area. Sometimes you need content-specific'tns PD and that is hard to get an administrator to invest $$ for just one or two ppl. Thats something our members face! #satchat
Struggles with PD are not unlike challenges with teaching and learning in schools. Neither can be treated as "events". Learning of any kind is a process. #satchat
#Satchat A1 agree that voice makes a huge difference. I like to think about who benefits most from our PD, Ss and Ps, and what do they want and need from us and how does our PD help us improve for them.
A1: There’s not always follow up or follow through. It’s great to bring PD aim to share new practices or ideas but just like kids you can’t share something once and hope it sticks. There needs to be a thought out plan for continued support. #satchat
We want students to have a say in their own learning, why wouldn't we ask teachers to do the same? We must have a collaborative plan and investment from all. #SATchat
A1:
1. Often one size fits all
2. Focused on testing & mandates
3. Lack of funding to travel
4. The PD credit system for certification is outdated #satchat
A1: PD that follows trends rather than meeting the needs of your school community. There is also lack of follow through...do it once and never revisit for review or concerns. #satchat
A1 We're stuck in the middle. Progress seems to be happening in pockets. I like where things are headed. We're listening to needs and working towards a system of personalized PD. Love what I'm seeing with microcredentials. It was big at @NYSCATE 2017. #satchat
Hi Suzanne Dir of Assessment the problem with PD structures now is that they are separate from day to day & many don’t see the value nor do all realize that they are lifelong learners #satchat@goAEFIS
A1 Passive PD that never models what is expected of Ts in the classroom + very little time to collaborate w colleagues. Lots of sitting, sitting, sitting. #satchat
#satchat Great visual- wish I could find one that includes "self direction" as well. Being told what we should learn doesn't often address what WE feel we need and want to learn.
In reply to
@ChrisQuinn64, @participate, @JenWilliamsEdu
A1: Time and follow through. Time to meaningfully plan and collaborate, time for educators to attend. Time to continue the learning. Consistency of vision (sticking with current initiatives/needs long enough to be effective). #satchat
Current PD systems are often lacking an anchor in a clearly articulated PD plan that supports a vision. I’ve seen too much “Wacko-A-Mole PD” that jumps from topic to topic (reactionary PD) & that doesn’t impact practice, behaviors or thinking! #satchat
A2: Poll the Ts for what they want/need to allow for a variety of choice. Have Ts present their own ideas. What has been working for them that they want to share. #satchat
PSA
SPAM REMINDER FOR #SATCHAT PLAN
During all @Twitter chats you will see some spam. You have options. You can block or you can report and block. When you block it the spam is out of your stream. When you report it helps everyone.
A1: My district (@Urbana116) does a great job of offering a wide variety of PD and tailoring to the needs of the adult learners. The challenge is getting those present, especially new-to-the-district, to be active participants. #satchat#TeachUrbana
Support systems are crucial. It would also be nice to have teachers visit classrooms that are actively using the technique that was presented. #satchat
A1: Ts want PD on something they can apply immediately. Not Too much philosophy or too much repetition of theory they have already heard and have considered. They also want time to discuss how it applies to them. #satchat
Truly feel the same, Gary! Twitter has been the entry point for me for the best PD of my career. What other types of PD are you finding with use of tech? #satchat
I am digging how @POLKProfLearn is doing business ... they are listening to teachers and trying to give us what we want/need. PD is not all about directives ... it can inspire. #PolkLearns#satchat
A1: I am a Ss learning to be an Educator but I have some great leaders (@JuliePJones) who are helping to open our eyes to new ways of not only learning for ourselves but initiating change within our future schools. #PD#satchat#conversechat
A1 I see a need to purposefully structure follow up and reflection, differentiation is lacking, as well as choice, and most of it is still sit and get. #satchat#CollaborativePD
A1. I believe we are still struggling with asking this question BEFORE we begin. Does it actually impact the students? #satchat@aaron_hogan understands that important aspect
A1 Joining these chats from the other side of the world, there appears to be a huge continuum from PD to PL. When I plan PD/PL I take the view it should be Prof.Learning. Then the Qs: How does this align with 🇦🇺 Prof.Standards for Ts, or System or School priorities
#satchat
Students buy-into curricula when they have a purpose for engaging - teachers are the same with PD. I am invested when I understand why I am participating and agree that I need this experience #satchat
I love our PD offerings at #fwsu@Educate4ward We have worked hard to make them a better fit for all with lots of choices. Including micro credentials this year #satchat
Good morning to the US teachers and good afternoon to EU teachers. The main problem today in EU is to find the proper methods for achieving main goals of education. #satchat
A2- Start backward: 'What do you want to know?' 'Why?' 'What do you envision occurring as a result of this learning?' 'How can we help you get there?' #satchat
A1: Professional Development seems most effective when both the intended development receiver and development giver’s interests are aligned. And the development time is valued and protected by superiors. #satchat#CollaborativePD
Hitting a key point..... Measuring effectiveness..... Hard to measure- understand I'm going to spend money for an outside speaker to come and speak and you listen. #satchat
Making that happen takes trust from the admin. If Ts say 'we're going to work on implementing more guided inquiry', then give them the support/resources they need & step out of the way. Don't make them sit in a room so admin can take T attendance. #satchat
I agree. When teachers embrace lifelong learning, then this doesn't become an issue. But how do you cultivate this kind of mindset? Over time with authentic, personal experiences that remind teachers what learning can be. #SATchat
A1. Traditional PD problems are often the same as traditional classroom problems: lack of choice, “one-size-fits all”, spray and pray, lack of authentic examples/modeling, no follow-up... #satchat
A1: I think the tricky part is balancing the mandated federal and state PD requirements related to security, medical situations, bullying, suicide, dyslexia, etc with addressing the needs of educators to really create learning environments that work for kids #satchat
A1: It starts with the mindset. There needs to be a recognition that Teachers collaborating with Teachers (kind of like what we are doing right now) is the best form of professional development. Top down is to limited and can't keep up. #satchat
A1: If we want 2 EMPOWER students we have 2 EMPOWER teachers! When teacher teams engage in their own inquiry cycles based on their needs, they r more motivated 2 learn & more importantly INNOVATE & take risks! #ImpactTeams#satchathttps://t.co/oP7apPdhHP
Q2: Playing to peoples strengths. PD ought to be like pot-luck dinner, everyone should bring something to the table and then you consume what fits your need. #satchat
A1: I see many educators drowning in Initiative Fatigue. So much going on with demands of time and learning it’s hard to go deep for transfer. #satchat
Via twitter am finding various blogs and specific blog posts, as well as resources, podcasts, etc. Am also finding book recommendations and ideas.
#satchat
A1: I completely agree with the personalization, but it is also imperative as new teachers are brought into our schools that there is a culture that values improving our profession and ourselves as educators. The best PD is when I devote my time to it willingly #Satchat
A2: Relevance to the learner, need for the learning community, relevant (why), a goal and plan (how), supports in place to transfer new learning together! #satchat
Struggles with PD are not unlike challenges with teaching and learning in schools. Neither can be treated as "events". Learning of any kind is a process. #satchat
A2. Peer to peer. Instructional rounds, @EdcampUSA. Ts observing Ts & dialoguing on the shared trends they find. Also: teacher PLCs BLOGGING about their off-cycle successes and struggles. Dewey: “We do not learn from experience... we learn from REFLECTING on experience.” #satchat
I'm actually going to meet with our Curriculum director next week and give her feedback on how I think it could be so much better. No one wants to tell her. I'll do it. It needs to be done.
#satchat
I had a similar expereince. Was discussing with a coworker that asking us what we needed to work on would have made the training so much more effective. Some needed curriculum support, some needed tech support and some just needed time to get paperwork done.
A2: Finding a like-minded niche I think is super helpful. I've found so many great ELA teachers on twitter, and the discussions have been invaluable. #satchat
SO true! It can't be a one-and-done. This week I taught 30 teachers about TodaysMeet, Padlet, and Flipgrid. I have to make sure I follow through and support them during the next 30 days as they try what they've learned. #satchat
Some of most effective PD is when similar topics are explored each month in class meeting format. 60-90 minutes Gives teaches opportunity to learn, then practice, tweak, and return to discuss what worked & what didn’t. #satchat
A1: I’ve noticed they only teach to one kind of teacher. Not differentiated to what each teacher needs. Just like our students, each teacher needs something different. Support with tech, support w/behavior, etc. #satchat
I agree in part. PD is rarely one size fits all. But I'm curious about how content PD can justify $$ when there are so many free content resources now #satchat
Even when choice are given for PD sessions, the sessions may still not reflect T voice on relevant topics such as personalized learning, PBL etc but on topics the district has selected as worthwhile. #satchat
A2: Allow time for Ts to use it and then come back and share (especially if implemented school-wide). Let them become the presenters on the topic. Ownership is key in learning. #satchat
Agreed! A while back I wrote about how we can organize PD into units, the same way we organize our students learning into units: https://t.co/3xO8C5atrM#satchat
A2 1 hour daily for entire staff w/out students. Backwards design as a team a vision for the year, SMART goals to guide the work and a calendar. Model 4 our students- teacher voice in the process leads to ownership & better results. #satchat
A2: Necessary elements for successful PD include teacher voice, teacher choice, and a way for the administration to capture and circulate all of the learning that takes place. @RobinFinberg at ABSS in N.C. is hitting it out of the park with this. #satchat
The striking teachers in West Virginia are to trying to shrink the distance between the state and the more prosperous parts of the country. https://t.co/sFJ3VSGc5K
.@TheBradCurrie A:1 In NY, PD systems have been hyper focused on tchr evaluation red tape, at the same time we had brutal funding cuts which forced many to cut PD budgets to $0. Teachers' Centers, which often pick up the slack, are also hanging on by a very thin thread #satchat
A1 Background: all of our big new users now want indepth PD to "develop how teachers teach", not just the apps. BUT, even with hyperefficient approachs, time is always a THE PD problem. #satchat
A2 Time, relationship building, and preparation are key elements. There has to be direction but an established culture of collaboration among ALL, not just the teachers. #satchat
True, we do need to keep in mind that there is some training and info that everyone needs, but often that can be done online. Everyone in a room together is an opportunity that should not be wasted. #satchat
In reply to
@HeatherLieberm2, @JenWilliamsEdu, @TheBradCurrie, @wkrakower, @ScottRRocco, @participate
A2: Content for PD should be individualized, not given through a silo. Find the strengths of your staff members and have them run PD sessions. Ask your staff what types of PD they desire.
And my favorite: Observing teachers at other schools! #satchat
A2 In #CollaborativePD teachers learn from and with each other. Here are four structures for peer-to-peer learning: teacher-presenter as expert, teacher-presenter as learner, All as experts, and all as learners. Read more: https://t.co/khtQZ6Ya9X#satchat
A2: the ultimate PD program is one that allows Ts to attain badges for building expertise, add these badges to their portfolio & above their doors & sharing out their learning as PD #satchat
#satchat Ts with their teams w/ st. work/data bf them making sense of new learning w/meaning. Ts nd time to plan w/ new learning in mind. Once clsrm life starts postPD- where’s the time to plan w/ new learning?
A2: Critical elements? Time, a culture of learning, relevant content and practical application, inspiring and innovative methods to model practices for the classroom, connected, authentic and personalized. #satchat
A2- I’ve had a lot of success with ala carte, teacher led PD. Give the choice, a deep menu, and gives folks ability to see their peers strengths.
#Satchat
A2: Voice and choice are 2 biggies for participants for all ages. Let Ts choose how & when they do PD, where they do PD, & choose the PD most relevant to their positions. #satchat
A2: I think choices for educators. Has anyone here done #IMMOOC with @gcouros and @katiemartinedu?! It is an AMAZING opportunity to connect with educators around the globe. I LOVE it. Something similar could be duplicated for sure #satchat
Did you guys participate in #ditchsummit with @jmattmiller It's such a great way to provide PD! I want to model that for our T's, but that will be a spring break project. #SatChat

Agree. Should it be driven at school level or at individual teacher level? For me I think it works better at Teacher level however this requires all teacher buy in and find an area to focus on, plus have access to relevant PD. Tech can help with access.
#satchat
A1. There is not often any follow-up. Without follow up, the topic seems unimportant. Teachers need time to digest it, try it, adjust it, revisit it and have someone to support us along the way. #satchat
We are encouraged to visit each other's classrooms and observe. Admins will even watch our classes for us while we visit. A culture of collaboration and comfort with observation is necessary for this to work. #satchat
Maybe. But who or what system are we complying with, that dictates the teacher stands at the front of the room and is the "sage on the stage"? What happens if he/she doesn't? #satchat
A2 have something like @engageonQ .... I can watch a video interact with the speaker, and others in the PD... I don't even have to be in the same room, same region, or same country. #satchat
A2. It has a throttle to go as fast or slow as people need it to. It has practical applications that can be used immediately. It’s reasonably priced. It causes reflection and change for T’s and ultimately helps S’s. #satchat
A2 Each teacher structures their own plan. Will some "go thru the motions", yes, but that is always the case no matter what. Freedom to those who want to grow is better than forcing them into PD in order to provide opportunities to those who dont appreciate it anyway #satchat
A2: Self-paces courses + group discussion + choice of topics/themes. If teachers aren't finding the PD they need then support for them to create it or find it outside of the current "system" (whatever that may be!) #satchat
#satchat re: A1: Hello, fellow SC edu! The culture is absolutely important, and there are always going to be complainers. The key is to surround the new edus w/folks who seek out PD outside of the district.
That is not the kind of PD we usually invest in at our school. In-house PD is led by eductors in the building. We tap into experience and expertise of our staff first. #satchat
My peeps at work all say we want to be grouped by departments and work together in our department to develop our own curriculum. Business does not need PD on Math...
#satchat
PD: start with the pedagogy (i.e. know your learner, embrace them - don't resist them), infuse with technique, layer in the content; it always starts with understanding the learners #satchat
A2 Staff input on the PD, but also intentionally centered around the vision for teaching & learning at your building. Consistent accessibility and follow up coaching opportunities for all #satchat
A2 If we want PD to be collaborative, we need to build in time for people to discuss new ideas, try things out in classrooms, return to the group with opinions. Ultimately, if PD is coming down to teachers from admin or the division, there needs to be a feedback loop. #satchat
A2. As I mentioned earlier, Interaction needs to be improved. The environment in which you conduct such sessions influences learning in some or the other way. The amount of time allocated to PD is a factor as well. It mostly depends on the content though. #satchat
A2: Ultimate #collaborativePD allows for educators to focus on an area they want to learn more about / improve in... give them choice on how to do it and then present their success to other educators - Learn Together & Share with Others opportunities
#satchat
A2: There needs to be PD aligned to your own goals. And there should be opportunities to grow in connected goals. The “P” in professional development doesn’t stand for potpourri!! #satchat
A2 - start with a proficiency based model. We ask for evidence from students of their learning everyday - why not the same for us? If you can shop at Amazon or knit a sweater is it really valuable PD? #satchat
A2: willingness to share. Schools are communities designed to educate Ss. We cannot keep our best practices secret from others. We need to be willing to share with all...secrets don't help the education field. #satchat
A1. PD is often accountability for sch admin. Sign form that you’ve listened. Often not in something you will use. No choices, no assessment, no interaction, no follow up. #satchat
A2) The elements that are crucial are highly engaging, interactive, easy to implement (with the idea that it takes around 3 years to implement), relevant, data-focused, teacher choices (including EdCamps), something that can be revisited and assessed, etc. #satchat
A2b.: Admin, PD should be the way you want us to teach our students. Not the way you tell us not to. Maybe Ts should give formal evals of PD sessions? :)
Your glows include: You're a great leader and a good talker...
Your grows include: differentiation. :)
#satchat
Choice is key. Pick a topic, then diversify the delivery: conversations, hands-on, conference, PLNs, etc. And build in time for reflection and implementation. #satchat
A2: Love to see a school based #collaborativePD system where teachers can add and access methods, ideas, and resources that their colleagues could utilize #satchat
Absolutely agree with this. There have been so many times I’ve been taught new systems, software, tech to use in my class but never actually implemented bc I didn’t get the time to fiddle around and figure it out #satchat
A2- the perfect PD would put the learners in charge. They would have to be part of the brainstorming, planning, execution, and reflection seasons! Also should provide food. Keeping everyone together with food keeps the conversation...therefore the learning going. #satchat
A2: Love to see a school based #collaborativePD system where teachers can add and access methods, ideas, and resources that their colleagues could utilize #satchat
Ugh! This enrages me. If our country screened every child for dyslexia before 2nd grade, and then implemented the teaching methods dyslexics need, they’d be at grade level reading within 1-3 years. No help = people/teachers assume kids are lazy/dumb = drop out of school. 😡
"I don’t mind if you don’t completely understand cellular biology or Lady Macbeth’s psychology; it matters that you leave this building empowered, valued, resilient, respectful, healthy, empathetic, and loved." #Culturize#EdChat#IaEdChat#SatChathttps://t.co/mHSElUaRx5
I often get tapped/asked to help many teachers and through my conversations I see the magic in them, but yet they do not feel what they do is sharable. #satchat
A2 staff sends in ideas for what they hope to learn more about. Some staff leaders present and other “experts” can be brought in when needed. Crucial for success? Good snacks and enthusiastic/engaging presenters! Prizes help too! 😉 #satchat
A2a: The best PD will have regular, frequent follow-up! I was given a level 1 training for a specific initiative 7 yrs ago and have never once been offered a refresher or a chance to do level 2 or beyond. #satchat
Collaborative PD should begin with a PD plan that is developed by all key stakeholders in a district/school (teachers, admins, students, etc) to ensure that there is a clear focus that supports “who we want to be!” #satchat
Sessions that have been most meaningful for me have contained modeling of the practice being shared and time to try it on the spot "DO and understand" #satchat
#satchat Agreed, Chris! I'm finding that as I learn to create my own visuals, I'm questioning how parts of their message or content might be missed because it's inferred by me (or others).
In reply to
@ChrisQuinn64, @participate, @JenWilliamsEdu
A1: We "teach" them. We don't allow them to feel empowered during their professional growth process with voice and choice. If we want teachers to shift their practices we must engage them in learning the same ways we want them to engage our students. #satchat
A2: If your not looking for a country wide or world wide PD option like I mentioned with #IMMOOC , then providing a platform for people to share, learn, collaborate ALL year long is huge. Have an LMS at your district?! It could hold ALL your PD materials!! #satchat
A2 Even individualized PD can get old if it's always the same. Change it up with edcamp, PLAYdates, classroom gallery walks, breakoutEDU sessions #Satchat
A2: I like this cycle, because it honours learning as a process over time. It is difficult to jump quickly, sometimes, to full collaboration...we need to ‘set the stage’ first...growth mindset! Crucial elements for PD success... #satchat@participate@JenWilliamsEdu
I totally agree! For some reason, I've been getting along swimmingly with traditionalist teachers from the UK. Odd, but interesting and very useful! #satchat
A2- the perfect PD would put the learners in charge. They would have to be part of the brainstorming, planning, execution, and reflection seasons! Also should provide food. Keeping everyone together with food keeps the conversation...therefore the learning going. #satchat
Some of the best PD I experienced was as a coach-after a game over a pizza & soda. Collaboratively bouncing new ideas, assessing our practice & relentlessly & collaboratively improving our craft 4 the kids. All on napkins :) #satchat
A2: The best PD would be something you can apply or implement right away. It has to be interesting & relevant, just like your teaching should be! #satchat
A2: Time for practical application of skills, reflection and collaboration are a must. There also should be a follow-up session and a focus on next steps is essential. #satchat
A2b: Book studies are a great example of how PD can keep building on ideas with regular, frequent follow-up, but the model can be used with other PD. #satchat
A2: relevance to the individual Ts, a long term focus, observation of PD in practice, facilitators that are practicing experts in area of PD, valued time to learn and practice #Satchat
A2 Each teacher structures their own plan. Will some "go thru the motions", yes, but that is always the case no matter what. Freedom to those who want to grow is better than forcing them into PD in order to provide opportunities to those who dont appreciate it anyway #satchat
A2 - The biggest part of making collaborative PD work, is building a culture that's open and receptive to it. Don't take Ts who live in silos, hand them a Pineapple chart, and expect miracles. #satchat#Culturize
A2. Dream world: PD is being lead by educators/admin who are currently in classrooms applying it... Formative assessments for teachers ahead of time so they can learn in groups with similar needs/wants... Clear, manageable “first steps” with follow-through & support. #satchat
A2: I agree with a lot of other educators/admin here that relevance, choice, collaboration, and time are crucial. Also, for PD to be really effective in the long-term, teachers must be recognized for their PD. Credentials are crucial #satchat
A1 When PD is for the admins and not the teachers, morale suffers and implementation is doomed. For admins means so they can check it off the list, saying they did it. For teachers is when they develop the need, delivery, and implementation meeting their needs/choices. #satchat
A:2 Teachers (aka highly qualified and successful practioners) teaching teachers. Nothing is worse than sitting in a PD session with a presenter who has never been in a classroom (or only taught for a few years). #collaborativePD#satchat@TheBradCurrie
A2 Give Ts embedded PD during the day. Provide time for Ts to learn together and from other in their classrooms with their Ss. Bring the learning to life and see it applied in real time with real kids! #satchat
PD: Don't ask me what I want to learn (I don't know what I don't know); ask me what obstacle I am trying to overcome, don't just hand me a new app, help me unpack the issue and understand why it exists, then I can participate in learning how to solve it #satchat
Time built into every school day, that is not for grading, parent mtgs, lesson planning, or anything else for T's to collaborate, seek out best practices, and learn together! Learning needs to happen every day, not 2x a year. #satchat
We had one last year. Loved it. Many complained because they just want to be told what to do. They kinda acted like the kids when you actually make them work...
#satchat
A2 Our best PD sequence, which is often done by our Science4Us people, is a live hands-on (science demos, not hands on softrware) session with teachers followed by a few times where we model lessons and teach in the clasroom. So we PD pedagogy with live people. #satchat
i got put in a box because i have dyslexia. i was always considered stupid and was always put in classes below my grade level. i never had a say in my own education.
Amen! I like the follow up aspect. This would be a great thing for a cohort to do - several teachers who have chosen to work on the same thing having the ability and expectation that they will work to encourage eachother! #satchat
Our @BeaverCountyILC professional learning this week was led by teachers, included building challenges, rich disvussions, and visits to innovative learning spaces. #satchat
A1: Just like we use data to inform instruction, I think teacher evaluation and walkthrough data should inform PD. Teacher choice and voice is important too. #satchat
The best PD might come of what happens in first two-three sessions. As the leaders take a look around the room. Which teachers are being consulted for more information or clarification. These are potential presenters in the future. Nurture them. The group looks to them. #satchat
A2: When teachers engage in collaborative inquiry w/ a focus on EXPANDING student ownership they can't go wrong! Developing assessment capable learners = 1.44 effect. All #ImpactTeams can be focusing on a different inquiry w/ the same goal! #satchat
A2: #satchathttps://t.co/TzUZvXGdJA Has some good ideas! "Self-reflection, professional development, experimentation. Self-reflection, professional development, experimentation … and on and on until retirement."
Test pressure tend to make administrators cantankerous and their teachers tend to catch the wrath. However, if you have been teaching all year long your test results are simply the bi product. #edchat#iteach#satchat#growthmindset
Yes! Professional development and training and two completely different things! Training masquerading as PD does not necessarily support teacher growth. #satchat
Yes! Will never cease to be amazed at the irony in so many teachers BEGGING for choice in their own PD, yet swearing by an antiquated system where our students should be denied the very same opportunities. #satchat
A2: Ultimate #collaborativePD allows for educators to focus on an area they want to learn more about / improve in... give them choice on how to do it and then present their success to other educators - Learn Together & Share with Others opportunities
#satchat
#satchat A2: Don't forget "brain breaks," too! Walk on the track for ten minutes, toss a ball in the field, shoot hoops in the gym. Chat and catch up over coffee & treats in the commons.
A2: Let's not forget FUN. Add Raffles, Ask staff to wear school colors. HAVE Music. Badges for task completions and lastly, Round table discussion areas for opportunities to talk about sessions #satchat
A2 - Igniting each adult's passion for teaching by engaging them in the entire process; providing autonomy and creativity around strategic goals. Having fun!! #SATCHAT
Ha. Interesting point. Perhaps the problem is the "test." PD learning can be demonstrated in so many ways - reflective writing, integration into classroom, re-sharing the PD with colleagues #satchat
A2 I like looking at @ibpyp workshops. There’s always a mix between direct instruction and participant led activity. I especially love their #makingthePYPhappen workshops #satchat
A2: The ultimate PD starts with a collaborative culture focused on growth and development. Always driven by needs, offers choice, is relevant, can be used tomorrow, isn’t always the same delivery method, on demand if needed, and is true development not training! #satchat
Choice is key. Educators need to be able to follow and build their passions within a framework of what the needs of the school/system and students/families are.
#satchat A2: Teacher voice and Choice but still aligned to school Improvement Plan. Teachers understand the need for standard but just like all learners want know The Why, want voice, & opportunity for choice! Best PD is either led by or done in collab WITH teachers; not to them
A2 As others mentioned, we need involve our campus bases experts to share their strategies, tips and tricks- other Ts respond very well to someone in their shoes who can prove it can be done successfully. #satchat#CollaborativePD
A2: Get staff up and moving. Staff share best practices that are working in their classrooms. Allow time to collaborate and create based on the pd. Build in time to watch the technique in an actual classroom. Take feedback from teachers and act on what they need. #satchat
A2 Crucial element-not always making PD about new initiatives being added. Make PD about things already being done. Don’t add to our plates, instead, help us make our plates the best they can be as is, with perhaps a little garnish. #SatChat
A2) I also think effective PD should be thoughtful. We should strive to make sure we know how it fits into our school mission, and it isn't just scattered, new, interesting, or flashy. #satchat
A2: The element of surprise is not a good element of relevant PD. Tell us what we're doing before we get there to begin our own Depth of Knowledge thinking. #satchat
I hate it when I have to fill out a form after PD stating how I used it in order to get PD points ... what if you wasted my time with something that was not applicable to me? #satchat
A2 @FutureReady-build upon inquiry already taking place, allow space & permission to fail through experimentation from different resources & contexts.
It’s about empowerment, self-discovery-expansion of pln, the ability to blend in voices, concepts & tools from all over” #satchat
A3 ed tech companies should take into consideration local contexts and also the infrastructure to support apps or programs they want to implement #satchat
I love this idea of "backchannel" for PD. Archive-ready. It really speaks to need for some members of the group to "incubate." Yes, there are those who are capable and comfortable with the one-off comment, but what about deeper thinking that comes of time? Reflection? #satchat
In reply to
@markbarnes19, @participate, @Flipgrid
So important, to create opportunities for such discussions and open sharing of ideas, etc. Too often we are busy and therefore these ops either are missed or dont exist.
#satchat
Ugg! I embrace those times when I get to hear ideas from my colleagues, but very few volunteer, and most see it as a waste of time, so I know what youre talking about #satchat
A1/2 (😉) I think PD or PL (I like L better) could be improved a few ways- when “held” - I think it could educators could be better served by a format more like EDCAMP structure- I can share this. I wanna learn this. #satchat
A1: My recommendation would be to begin PD sessions with an activity for participants to connect & build relationships prior to beginning the learning element to build community. Also, engagement increases when learning is experienced vs. presented. #satchat
Q2: The ultimate collaborative PD would involve a group consensus in deciding the area of engagement. My most memorable PD involved staff deciding on a division wide focus & implementing diagnostics. Then bringing work samples and together moderating them as a division. #satchat
A2 Great PD is driven by staff to fit their needs, collaborative in nature, easy to implement in stages, and supported with time and resources by district. Ts need to hold up there end of PD too. #satchat
A3: Differentiate, don't patronize. If it's a kid-facing tool, let teachers just dig into it and figure it out for themselves- if the least tech-savvy teacher can't figure it out, the least tech-savvy kid can't, either. #satchat
A2 It's like an ongoing EdCamp. Accessible for all, choice, fun, discussion, many voices, and prizes of course (maybe microcredentials). Archived convo and content would be great. Also diverse with participants globally to gain new perspectives. #satchat
A3: Be available for support w/out breaking the bank for "coaching" time. #satchat#edtech4good The ones that have a "ask" section for self guided tours are awesome!
A3. They could begin by understanding a model, such as this one, that clearly explains that educators break up their learning into small chunks each day. It isn't a few days a year gathered with 100's of others. #satchat
Q3: Connect at the grass roots level, offer the supports and materials that will be needed to implement the PD with fidelity after it’s been shared. 😊 #satchat
We did a modified EdCamp PD and teachers asked for more time with each session. More Time?!? When do Ts ask for longer PD - it was awesome. https://t.co/wdQGfjGwXb#satchat
A2: Would include teacher reflection but also admin input with conversation on individual paths. As a building principal for many years there were lots of conversations to assist and find the right support, hey this great book, workshop at BOCES, visit this classroom! #satchat
Definitely! The support systems that individual teachers need may vary widely depending on their content area, support system within the building and their goals for professional growth. #satchat
A3 Helping Ts connect and collaborate. Every teacher in my school is a level 1 Google Certified Educator. We collaborate on many different topics using google drive. It's a great way to learn what is going on with other Ts in my building and to share my knowledge. #satchat
So so true! Added benefit - increased trust & pride among staff, plus the feeling like there is someone just down the hall if you have followup questions. #satchat
#satchat A2 coherence can be very key. A case that comes to mind is an elementary principal who was running her school as a "turnaround" (it was an F). She cancelled all outside PD and took it all inhouse. BY HERSELF! The Ts got one coherent message!
#satchat A2: Teacher voice and Choice but still aligned to school Improvement Plan. Teachers understand the need for standard but just like all learners want know The Why, want voice, & opportunity for choice! Best PD is either led by or done in collab WITH teachers; not to them
A2 Essential to success is to have an understanding of either Androgogy-Principles of Adult Learning (see https://t.co/cx1yhAB5mV) or Heutagogy-Adult learning as life long learning
(See https://t.co/Xc1M771ZiL)
#satchat
A3: Continue offering virtual, digital PD. Convinced admin to allow Ts to use @edpuzzle's PD courses for Act 48 credit. Has been a huge hit with Ts, as they can do it on THEIR time. Offer credentials too! #badges#satchat#edtech4good
A1. I believe we are still struggling with asking this question BEFORE we begin. Does it actually impact the students? #satchat@aaron_hogan understands that important aspect
#satchat
A3) Realize that we don’t always have easily accessible (and functioning) technology at our disposal. I see lots of stuff I’d love to use, but have no way to implement with the tech available. #satchat
To be honest, I turned to Twitter for educational conversations (both as a participant or just ingesting) that people I work with either dont have time or are unwilling to have. And in the end result, maybe that is what I want out of Professional Development that I lack #satchat
A2: A good element would be not everyone has PD on the same day. This would provide time to observe what our AMAZING colleagues are doing in their classrooms - learn from the experts! #satchat
A2. A plan to build the capacity of our Ts. Allow them choice and voice in selecting relevant learning topics and give them opportunities to lead. You build human leadership capacity. You build opportunity to better serve kids and each other. #satchat
Our students taught the faculty different social media platform of their choosing on Tuesday. T’s loved learning from students. They had learning targets for the T’s and then developed Kahoots and Quizziz to assess their learning. #Satchat
A3. This graphic continues the same theme that clearly shows what we tried in the past that never worked and how we are trying to improve with out PD now (still room for growth) #satchat
A3. Hands on product demos in small groups of = 12. Time to “play” in the sandbox. I’ve personally run hands on sessions where teachers had the chance to take @EquityMaps, @quizizz, @usekamiapp@GetKahoot@breakoutEDU & @Flipgrid for a test drive, and they’re a big hit. #satchat
A3: #edtech companies should survey educational staff & leaders to meet their needs and provide a variety of options, choices, modes of delivery for professional learning. #satchat
A3: If an edtech company is not helping educators achieve PD goal then you have to question why you are its tools and resources in the first place #satchat
A3- #edtech is a business. Despite how much we may want true collaboration, or cheap coaching prices, at the heart it’s a business. As a consumer we can take our dollars elsewhere, and always seek for the startups... but expecting altruism is a bit much.
#Satchat
A#: #edtech can personalize the learning journey for teachers and students, connect classrooms together, open classroom doors and blur the lines of traditional bounded learning. #edtech4good#satchat#satchat
#satchat A2: Also, ultimate collaborative PD needs to be educator driven. Educators who need support should have that support matching them w/an edu who is more assertive.
A3: As far as teacher-facing edtech solutions, mostly those seem to be ways that administrators can "keep tabs" on who's doing work, rather than ways to actually help teachers meet goals. So figure out whose goal is being supported and own that. #satchat
A3 start with what we want to do, then show us how the tech can get us there
How is the tech a tool for collaboration?
How is the tech a bridge to connect classrooms?
How does the tech allow authentic engagement?
If it’s more test prep in a sparkly package, no thank you. #satchat
Exactly! Develop has the sense of the facilitator doing something so a better practitioner goes back to school, learning suggests inquiry, sharing of knowledge and a life long process. As one who delivers programs for Ts I prefer the second to the first. #satchat
A2 people need mindful understanding of why change a practice, to know what the change is directed to accomplish, what simple action they can take as a first step #satchat
A3: I'm wary of #edtech companies sometimes. For PD they really need to answer the question "how will this redfine, rather than just substitute?" Use the SAMR model and don't assume flashy = good #satchat#SAMR
Psalms 84:10
'For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.'
#Jesus#SaturdayMorning#satchat
A3: Continue offering systems and programs that allow Ts to connect all over the world, share ideas, and learn. Track learning for District credit. Support collaboration outside of district. #satchat
A3 We use the same tech tools in PD that Ts use with Ss - hyperdocs, Google classroom, e-portfolios. Ts become familiar with them as they apply them to their own learning. #Satchat
A2. Every school has teachers who are experts in one area or another. These people are our greatest resources! Create a culture of teacher leaders. Allow them to lead PD and set up classroom observations. I am inspired most by my peers who are crushing it! #satchat
A3 don’t be afraid to have a sandbox moment. Let your clients play and mess around with your equipment. We’re expected to be just as curious as our Ss don’t penalize us for that. #satchat
A3 ... i am not interested in your sales pitch ... Making is not about buying "Maker Kits" ... Coding is not about "connect the dot" instructions ... tired of seeing Eds broadcast their greatness by simply downloading projects for kids to do. #satchat
I think @Joe_Sanfelippo did an activity where staff wrote on a paper plate everything that was on their plate. This might be a great lead into helping staff identify for us what the feel are the main dishes, side dishes and garnish leading to more personalized PD. Hmmm #satchat
A3: EdTech companies need to fill in the gaps in PD that administration is not able to provide. Edtech Co's should be the gateway to technological innovations in learning @Levelupvillage#satchat
Q1: The struggles I see with current PD systems is that often areas of focus aren’t differentiated enough for teachers who are at different stages of growth. It’s important to share information without expecting teachers to change what they’re doing that’s working. #satchat
#satchat A3: Make products/tools/interfaces intuitive. If a company providing early-childhood/KNG/1st grade tools, know that young learners don't need to waste time logging in with 15 character usernames and triple-coded passwords: stop training me to train them. #rantover
While not always a popular/supported opinion, there is sometimes too much #edtech coming at teachers. Many still want in person dare I say old school. Give options and support both schools of thought. #satchat
A3. If #edtech companies can create a la carte options for PD that would be sweet! Sometimes people don’t wanna buy the whole sundae when they just want the cherry on top. Free training and extended support. And include practitioners voices in the development of programs #satchat
A3: listen to practical suggestions Ts make to improve their programs/tools. Be available to come to schools and train or even observe in classrooms how tools are being utilized. Ts use could be way different than intended design. #satchat
A3 - #edtech companies have the power to connect educators from around the nation/world so they can learn and collaborate together, sharing strategies and best practices. #SATCHAT
A3. Face to face is powerful and personable, but not always sustainable due to geography. How do you create a more personal and intimate virtual learning environment? #satchat
A3: Bold statement: #edtech is far too narrowly focused. There needs to be less focus on content and more focus on skills a creating. Am I learning how to create something or just give a response on a digital platform? #satchat
A3: Involve parents. If students are able to work with programs on the internet, the parents need the #edtech PD as well for problem-solving and involvement in the education process. #satchat
Thank you! Looking forward to reading more about it. I like the idea of "play" in PD generally, to remember to bring joy & fun into PD is so important. How many teachers write in "have fun" as a goal in their own professional development plan?#satchat
A3. I LOVE Twitter chats about professional development and learning with all of you! So glad you are sharing your thoughts and ideas this morning. #satchat
A3 Edtech needs to show Ts how their product will be applied in the class. How does this product make my teaching more powerful? How will my Ss benefit from it? How will it enhance my teaching and make me better, more impactful? #satchat@participate
We ask teachers to differentiate or personalize instruction in their classrooms. We must model the same in professional learning for teachers. #satchat@participate@JenWilliamsEdu
A3 don’t be afraid to have a sandbox moment. Let your clients play and mess around with your equipment. We’re expected to be just as curious as our Ss don’t penalize us for that. #satchat
A3: this is where I want to learn! In my PD, I ultimately want the Ts to play, click around, mess things up, ask questions as they come but I also struggle with "oooo but I want to tell you more" & enjoy talking too much 😬#satchat
A3 I love the way @Seesaw gives users a variety of tutorial videos-which are short, and chunked to answer specific Qs- great for busy schedules! I also loved their ambassador program- content & Qs were great- making sure we really knew how to use all the tools! #satchat
A2 teacher PD should look like good classroom teaching. Model what we want Ts to be doing & using in class. No more sit & get. Focused, active, Engaging & authentic #SatChat
A3: I work for an #edtech company and we offer PD for schools OUTSIDE of juatnhow our software works. I would welcome anyone in the @MyPowerSchool community to share their success with this OR contact me to see how our LMS can be a place for PLC and PD growth!!! #satchat
The best PD would probably lead to each teacher's ability to tell a story of their growth over the course of the year by way of what they received and what they adopted into their practice. The narrative. The story of "I sat through thirty-six meetings" is a short one. #satchat
#satchat In Australia the problem is Principals will not pay for Ts to attend PD so it is left for them to seek in their own time and money. Our new agreement now says its is compulsory we have 4 days a year in school time. This was a massive decision for the Gov to agree on.
All of our sessions are required ones working toward goals hat our educators don’t need. As an instructional coach, I want to tailor my PD to not only what teachers want but what they need. Creative solutions anyone? #satchat
A3: I know #edtech companies are businesses and that is takes money to develop and maintain their products, but I wish they could find more funding from other sources. My school can't afford to spend tens of thousands each year for annual subscriptions. #satchat
A4: Just signed up for @participate and I am excited to learn from this community. It is organized and allows you to get the PD you need, when you need it. #SATchat
A2: elements of #CollaborativePD include opportunities to construct meaning to new knowledge in a team, involves reflection & active learning, is learner-centered, and isn’t imposed on Ts by leader. Basically, it’s good teaching #satchat
A3: provide easy access to resources that support collaboration among educators. #edtech is the tool that educators use to become better for our kids. Collaboration and connections are the road to get us there. #satchat
A3: To often professional learning focuses on tools and not student outcomes through improved pedagogy. Focus on improving pedagogy. #LT8keys#satchat@participate
#CustomerExperience is important in #edtech PD. I'll learn a tricky tech tool, if I can ask questions, give feedback, and get a response to improve the tool for next time #satchat
A2. Every school has teachers who are experts in one area or another. These people are our greatest resources! Create a culture of teacher leaders. Allow them to lead PD and set up classroom observations. I am inspired most by my peers who are crushing it! #satchat
When I talk to #edtech companies I want to hear about student experiences and outcomes first, then tell me how and why it’s great for Ts. I prefer practical tools more than excessive carnival like experiences. #satchat
A3: PD companies need to start tying research to product. For example, taking John Hattie’s Effective size list and matching it up to what the product has to offer in helping teachers teach and students learn #satchat
A3 if we bought a 3D printer from you, please don’t tell us to keep using it just so it could be “maximized” when it’s pretty obvious the novelty of 3D printing is done and over with #satchat
A3: By making their services user friendly and providing accessible support. Also, by considering user feedback to improve product efficiency. #satchat
Dear #edtech companies, your product pitch gets my attention when teacher shows me how use of it expanded a student's ability to grow and show that growth; You need progressive educators on your team #satchat
A3 #edtech companies can help with PD by allowing more opportunities to try, implementing feedback quickly, and regularly engaging with Ts. The most valuable products are the most responsive and flexible.
#satchat
Jumping in! A3. I think when #edtech companies use ambassadors of Ts in the classroom who can use real world experiences and share that with others is most beneficial. We know how to get the word out about things we love. #satchat
A3: Edtech must be built into #ImpactTeams inquiry cycles. I have seen some great #ImpactTeam Inquiry cycles that use edtech tools to expand student ownership! We love @sowntogrow to support student reflection and student goal setting! #satchat
This is exactly why I view it as my responsibility as a building leader to ensure that people want to engage in these conversations. Culture of learning is a real thing for teachers as much as it is for Ss in the classroom. #satchat
A little late to #satchat but am following along. Great topic! I definitely recommend #edCamp style PD offerings - to date, I’ve learned so much more and have engaged with so MANY more!
A4: The collections to easy collect and curate are one of my favorite things, especially since we can collaborate with others. You can tangibly feel the energy on this site! #SATchat
A3. Educators are mostly lacking in providing a practical perspective to what they teach in schools. Any edtech company capable of providing tools that justify the practicality of learning, is helpful. #satchat
A3: we have a teacher led Edtech team for PD. We share tools and strategies that we use in our classes to demonstate and provide support for other Ts that may see the how that particular tool is applicable to their style and content. #satchat
A3. This graphic is a perfect example of different ways to use Twitter to learn. Not every chat is for everyone. Great to have variety so you can match your learning to a chat. #satchat Share with friends so they can match up their needs too!
A3: Ustd that ed have ltd time so make platforms that are user friendly, customizable and easily applicable to their enviro. It also has to be affordable. It shouldn’t be basic, or frustrating and cumbersome. With time as the most limited resource that’s a huge turnoff. #satchat
A2 teacher PD should look like good classroom teaching. Model what we want Ts to be doing & using in class. No more sit & get. Focused, active, Engaging & authentic #SatChat
I wish I had the vision and creativity to answer Q 3. I do know this, however, I learn a lot each Saturday morning from all of you. Thanks Twitter! #satchat
A3: EdTech companies have to respect educators, understand them and the environment, and support in filling gaps that tech can close. Too often, educators get tech they never use or only use superficially #satchat
The best PD would probably lead to each teacher's ability to tell a story of their growth over the course of the year by way of what they received and what they adopted into their practice. The narrative. The story of "I sat through thirty-six meetings" is a short one. #satchat
A3 ed tech tha optimizes intuitive learning platforms which incorporate collaborative opps, digital media, peer to peer reflection opps, personal customization options #satchat
A3: Stay close to practising educators...ask, listen, engage them in the process of development, keep things authentic and meaningful, don’t ‘assume’, trust practising educators to inform their learning process. #satchat@participate@JenWilliamsEdu
A3. It should allow me to do some of my learning at my own pace in my own time. Why do we all have to meet int he auditorium to listen tome someone when I can do something interactive at a time I am ready to learn #satchat
A3: provide supports digitally or a consultant that is knowledgeable about the product, but also adult learners, and integration into the classroom. I am exploring more of the “micro-credential” concept in having faculty actually use and reflect on a lesson or task. #satchat
A3 Make sure the people doing the tracings still actively participate in real classrooms. Too many times they seem too distant from teaching, seem more like salespeople than educators. #SatChat
A3: edtech can provide models of personalized PDs with guidance on how to use the technology to make those models work for individualized needs #satchat
A3. This graphic is a perfect example of different ways to use Twitter to learn. Not every chat is for everyone. Great to have variety so you can match your learning to a chat. #satchat Share with friends so they can match up their needs too!
Q3: Ed tech companies could support educators more by doing additional fieldwork beyond the initial PD. It’s critical to understand that teachers are at different stages of comfort & knowledge. Some are reluctant to ask for help for fear of judgement. So send people out! #satchat
@realDonaldTrump President Trump, if you go over to GAB to communicate with America & the world, America & the world will follow you there. Many of us are there now anticipating your arrival. Where we go one, we go all. #satchat
I love this PD graphic! Personalized PD is so important, especially in smaller school districts like mine, in which individual teachers may be the only ones in the district teaching a specific grade and content level. #PersonalizedPD#ProfessionalDevelopment#Satchat#edchat
A3. This graphic continues the same theme that clearly shows what we tried in the past that never worked and how we are trying to improve with out PD now (still room for growth) #satchat
#Edtech companies (some, not all) are focused on "the tech", not "the learning". Those that best serve our needs know their product can be a means to an end - meaningful engagement, purposeful assessment, etc. #satchat
A3: I know #edtech companies are businesses and that is takes money to develop and maintain their products, but I wish they could find more funding from other sources. My school can't afford to spend tens of thousands each year for annual subscriptions. #satchat
#satchat
A3: In 2018, we don’t need “PD in our PJ’s”. We need opportunities to network, collaborate, ideate, and learn anytime, anywhere from anyone. #satchat@participate
A4 Great that is is tied to twitter hashtags, recognizing that PD does not come in a wrapped package and needs to include the conversations that are happening in education at the moment. AND THERE’S A LIST OF CURRENT CHATS?!? I’m in love! #satchat
A3: I like it when edtech companies hire former teachers to show us their tools. However, an additional step would be to have an English teacher give me concrete ways to use your tool in my ELA classroom. #satchat
A3b #edtech companies should have a heart for kids, a love of learning, and be actively engaged and supporting schools and teachers beyond the dollar signs. #satchat
#satchat A3 Many teachers need PD on future ready learning. Edtech companies need to find a way to get PD happening in schools and support the lone soliders to find a way to engage the doubters. My school in Aust know nothing about edtech companies and I have tried everything.
A3... @FlipGrid does a great job of using ambassadors and keeping them up-to-date and listening to their needs #edtech and adjusting their product to fit Ss needs and raise voices. #satchat
#satchat A3: Edtech companies can best support edus from a range of campuses -- from high poverty to affluent -- by both consulting them and testing the product with them.
Is your PD part of your compensation? Is it part of your job? Then I’d say yes, showing evidence is important. If it’s on your own than that’s a different story. #satchat
A3 It’s helpful when people designing and explaining the tech really understand teaching, learning, kids, and educators. We have some unique needs and challenges. #satchat
WIth my graduate students, an invitation to meet asynchronously has provided opportunities for these to participate in threaded discussions like #satchat. What if we invited teachers to do "in-the-room" PD. Webinar. Admins could still do walk-throughs and collect various choices.
#satchat provide choices in presentation delivery. Provide lively and meaningful sessions (no sleeping monologues) engage, pump up, get staff wanting more. Then help them carry through on that excitement— on going communication. Build relationships.
I am working with a student whose independent study project for this semester is using AR/VR to hack one assessment in each of his classes. Grassroots change - learn from the students! #satchat
You are absolutely right! Unless your scholars love your subject and are confident that you have set them up for success. After every Bench mark test my Ss are excited about how much they knew on the test and their data proves it. #edchat#Satchat#iteach
Hey Jen thanks for having me. Great topic and one that frustrates me greatly here at home. PD is not available enough to prepare teachers for the future #satchat
A3: #edtech companies can design tools to enhance collaboration & communication between Ts & Ss. There are already so many out there, but collaboration is key to moving forward together. I like @Flipgrid, @padlet, & some good #podcasts like @GTeacherTribe & @PodcastPD! #satchat
Q3: Ed tech companies could support educators more by doing additional fieldwork beyond the initial PD. It’s critical to understand that teachers are at different stages of comfort & knowledge. Some are reluctant to ask for help for fear of judgement. So send people out! #satchat
#satchat A2: Teacher voice and Choice but still aligned to school Improvement Plan. Teachers understand the need for standard but just like all learners want know The Why, want voice, & opportunity for choice! Best PD is either led by or done in collab WITH teachers; not to them
A3.1 edtech companies know districts can't keep up.... Move to cloud based apps, use tech already available, bring your own devices (BYOD)--- parents an option for raising money for tech??? #satchat
A3: YouTube can show us how or we can play with it to figure it out. Focus on why this will make a difference for our Ss and what about it enhances what we’re already doing. #satchat
A3: #edtech needs to be prepared to show how the technology fits in with current curriculum. It's not that I don't like change or I can't adapt, but I can't start from scratch all the time. #satchat
A4: Our mission and aim with the PD portal is to harness the energy and enthusiasm we experience in conversations like this. This is professional development, and should be recognized as such. We bridge the gap between organic collaboration and discovery and formal PD. #satchat
I've mentioned that in groups before when planning for PD. The Q is "what do we need to provide for T's", when really it should be "__ is what the T's said they needed." #SatChat
#even when we buy a car we get to drive it to see if we like it. We get 100 days of a free mattress to sleep on just to see if it works, so why not PD in our careers? #satchat
In reply to
@MeehanDJO, @EquityMaps, @quizizz, @usekamiapp, @GetKahoot, @breakoutEDU, @Flipgrid
A3 - #edtech companies have the power to connect educators from around the nation/world so they can learn and collaborate together, sharing strategies and best practices. #SATCHAT
Agree with you Chris. When you have left the classroom you dont understand the new pushes and pulls of the teacher is dealing with & it may different than the edtech person dealt w/even a few yrs earlier #satchat
In reply to
@ChrisQuinn64, @participate, @JenWilliamsEdu
Great point! The challenges of rapidly changing technology...but we can’t afford to ‘bury our heads in the sand’, for the sake of each and every one of our students! #satchat
I also prefer having opportunities to network and such but we must provide PD of all shapes and sizes for those who are unable to attend relevant sessions. Virtual PD helps reach that audience. #satchat
A3: companies should not be profiting off kids. Take a lesson from curr. developers, don't focus on flashy products, focus on the substance and the needs of the students. How many of us have colorful reading series on the shelves that don't contain any real literature? #satchat
A3: provide time to learn and explore, then allow Ts to design their own instructional materials in the session with scaffolding. PD is only useful if it is implemented. Time to plan and develop what’s needed for implementation allows Ts to use it! #satchat
This! Telling the story of growth- how to authentically use the pd, how it worked, how we might have revised it and made it better. How it made me better. Telling the story- wish I could like this more than once. #satchat
Professional development for teachers is most useful when:
1. It’s practical
2. It’s time efficient
3. It applies to needed areas of improvement
#satchat
A3.2 partner with tech companies... Have a solution to a problem built by your students or staff... teach these folks skills that can pay bills and be Accountable to that. #satchat
This is a critical framework we need to promote globally to move everyone forward in an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can more fully maximize their individual potential. #satchat
Mad props to @JenWilliamsEdu and @participate for a kick butt #satchat and starting my weekend off right!!! I hate to leave early but #demoday is about to start!! To a new kitchen and pray for my safety 😊😁 Have a great day all!! #PLC#satchat
A3: More affordable access! Most teachers spend their own money in their classrooms as is and now we have this added cost if we want to continue to do what we know is best for our students! My district does provide professional liscenses but not for everything I use! #satchat
A3 PD edcamp style gives choices. Everybody isn’t in the same place in acquiring tools for their toolbox. Consider it PD wether you’re taking a session or giving one. #satchat
A5: For me, the need for PD varies. Some topics that come to mind is the collaborative features of tech resources, improving specific instructional practices & data analysis. #satchat
PD: Don't ask me what I want to learn (I don't know what I don't know); ask me what obstacle I am trying to overcome, don't just hand me a new app, help me unpack the issue and understand why it exists, then I can participate in learning how to solve it #satchat
PD: not 1 approach for all situations. One case: a take-charge P is driving a program to get all Ts on the same page. Another: there is no overarching priority and there, the teachers should have choice. But how to balance Ts, Ps, and district priorities? #satchat A2
Very insightful and it’s so true! Thinking about how we can incorporate new ideas into our own teaching practice and style is the ultimate way to achieve success. #satchat
A3 #satchat Good Morning, Sharon in Vermont joining late. Technology for me is about opening doors and creating pathways to be inspired and learn more about what you are curious about. I like the idea of @kmurfitt1 about having companies visit/listen to teachers.
What if an educator is interested in learning about maker spaces and coding? Don't "kits" provide a nice launch point for adult learning? Sometimes kits can be how an educator creates their first commitment to learning one new thing to implement in their class. #satchat
Absolutely correct. This is not a gun issue or the NRA's fault. It's time we started to look the real source of this tragedy, The FBI and local law enforcement.
#SaturdayMorning#satchat#MAGA
Sheriff Tracy Murphree: “What happened in Broward County, Florida is not a gun issue, it’s a complete failure of law enforcement to protect its citizens.”
So true! I also don't get the conferences that cost $1500+ to go to! I'm not sure where they think we are going to get that money from. Districts are on a shoestring budget as it is! #satchat
One of the biggest considerations of Ed Tech is that it cannot promise that it does something for the teacher (better or faster). It's suspect at best if the tech does something for the teacher that is not of benefit to the whole room (the students). Help US be better. #satchat
A4: I like the idea of a PD clearinghouse. What's in place to keep it from becoming TpT, where there are some diamonds, but a lot of "rough." (and rampant plagiarism, too) #satchat
A3: If I'm dreaming, I'd love to have an ed tech ambassador come visit my classroom and show the kids and I some amazing apps for learning in real time #satchat
Problem with education system is unequal funding of public schools based off property tax zip codes, promoting inequality. Republican philosophy punishing poor performing schools funding rather than reorganizing, investing in technology and teachers, dooms our system #satchat
It's true what they say. A lot of life is about perspective. People can see the exact same moment in life and some will see all that's bad. Others all that's good. I want to try to see more of the good more often. #satchat
Yes. He is learning different tools like Aurasma, Metaverse, using our 3D camera; he is identifying one project at a time and proposing an alternate project to that teacher. Our goal: he will offer workshops for teachers after each project #satchat
A5. We cannot stress on this enough: regulating technology. Especially, how gadgets are used in the classroom. As teaching methods change and tech gets involved more often, addiction of students to gadgets would be a side-effect we all need to be prepared for. #satchat
A5) restorative justice, identifying and helping children who have experienced trauma, crisis management, ALICE protocol, differentiation (at risk, EL, SpEd), ed tech tools, social emotional learning, etc. #satchat
#satchat A5: Glad you asked this one. Mental health issues need to be at the top of the list for school and district PD. All of my circles have been expressing the need.
A5 PD that is personalized! Just like Ss, Ts have different interests that need to be met. Not all Ts want to or need to grow in the same area! #satchat
A5: Collaboration! Specifically, how to grow your PLN with tools like @Twitter. I’ve grown more by connecting w/ professionals here than any PD I’ve been to. #satchat
Yes! We all deserve support in our growth. We don’t expect students to grow without feedback and support. It is absurd to think teachers can reach their greatest potential without strong, ongoing support structures. #stickwithparticipate#participatementors#satchat
A4: Project based learning, Project based assessment, Personalized learning, tech integration, alternative assessments, formative assessment...so many topics, so much to learn! #satchat
A5) We need to strengthen our knowledge and skills in supporting students and families experiencing trauma. Also, we need to get better at helping those with mental health needs. #satchat
#satchat A3. By maximizing the resources that are ready and available to them now, monitoring for updates on programs, and having affordable program renewals/subscriptions.
And 4. It shows possibilities for things to use in the future.
AND 5. It provides follow up, key agents to go to for help, and repetition for those who need it.
#satchat
I have grown more utilizing @Twitter@voxer as a vehicle for learning than I ever have from any professional learning session I’ve attended in the 13 years I’ve been in education. #SatChat

#satchat Q3 Hey guys take my lead and challenge the edtech companies. This week with 4700 Ss responding to my #OGC grid I pushed the boundaries of technology globally. Use the tech to support the learning. Its about the whole student not the technology.
Adult Learning Theory - There are striking differences in the way people learn and process information. The most important thing an instructor can do is be aware of the diverse learning styles in the trainee population🎯 #satchat
A3: Press pause on computer-based testing. Demand that the CBT systems are aligned with instruction and student needs. Provide the research that shows kids do better on CBTs, especially special needs Ss whose services often don't follow them to CBT #satchat
A5
Engagement for reticent learners. This remains a fundamental need across the profession. ESL bridge strategies. Emotional health
ENOUGH with the feel good self affirmations masquerading as PD. This just contributes to making the profession look less professional
#Satchat
A3. If someone from an edtech company is leading PD on their tool with a group of teachers, I think it’s time we expect that individual to have actually used that tool with real, live children. #satchat
A5: We continue to need learn more about Blended Learning and differentiation within that model. I also want to do more with digital badging and online learning in lieu of “sit and get.” #satchat
I don'T believe those people whose greatest achievement is to have clicked a selfie (or a photograph) with a celebrity. (deducing from their dp or cover pics) . 😀Como'n live life. #MyFriendsAlwaysKnow#satchat#story
This is one thing I am certain we need to improve on! No more chasing around the carrot or jumping around like a buncha bunnies from one thing to around. #satchat 😊
A5 Equity has to be on this list. We have so mjuch work to do when it comes to addressing systemic bias. Another topic I would include is leadership in and out of the classroom. #satchat
A3: #edtech companies can bridge the gap by listening to their clients & their clients listening to them & collaboratively design solutions that ultimately support learning & outcomes transfer @goAEFIS#satchat
A5. PD depends on the teacher. There is much need for choice. But most teachers need help and support in using #edtech in their classrooms! The best PD is implemented with the Ss. Model this great Tech, strategy, etc in the classroom! #satchat
A5 #satchat I would love to see opportunities for educators about @TheGlobalGoals exploring learning in ways that bridge students and educators globally to collaborate on common needs; water, poverty, etc. Having a #PBL model and outreach in communities for impact.
This is of course the psychological part. The academic part would be preparing students to make more logic based decisions, especially in STEM related subjects. I mean, their foundation is simple and yet students have a hard time having a grasp of the basics. #satchat
A5) I'd love more focus on lesson design, and embedded formative assessment between each chunk of the lesson. Back to the basics, and the pay off is huge! #satchat#Focus
Speaking right to my mind and heart, Kevin...having worked at the district level for 16 years and now back on the classroom for the past 2 years (with 2 years to go to retirement)...you speak an important truth, my friend! #satchat

#satchat For new-to-service Ts, a big WELCOME! For everyone, a discussion just like this one. How do we want to build timely, relevant, helpful PD, and provide & be resources for one another to support students, colleagues and our mission?
A5: How to do tech integration that enhances and empowers, not just replaces a worksheet. Pedagogy strategies that work. Moving Ss to empowerment and love of learning. Collaboration! Communication! Creativity! Critical thinking! #satchat
I keep wondering about PD and how it relates to detailed step by step lesson plans. Is there an inherent conflict? We PD as if the teacher can innovate but we also provide detailed lesson plans. Anyone? Just asking.... #satchat
Want to UNDERSTAND PUTIN MONEY IN THE USA AND THE WORLD ?? Then google this person and do some reading https://t.co/SgPv8XrMCQ

Timeless topics are those we can and should be using every day in every classroom - assessment OF learning, assessment FOR learning, total participation techniques. Layered on top of that is meaningful engagement and the OPTION to incorporate instructional technology. #satchat
A5. Will the core tenets really ever change? Won’t we always be improving in things like: differentiation, SEL enhancement, synthesizing tech, pedagogy, interdisciplinary exposures, etc? #satchat
A5: joining late with my ☕️, but more PD is needed around what to do with the data. Taking information to intentionally address the gaps we see with our students. Short term and long term planning #satchat
A5. Standards based grading. Mastery transcripts. Gradeless schools. Electronic portfolios.
In 20 years, we should look back at rows and grades and see them the way we view chalkboard slates and in-desk inkwells. #satchat
A5 Effective embedding of Technology for student creation and voice. It's time to stop having students curate stuff from Google and create things using tools of their choice.#satchat
A3 Ed Tech can have a role. It is best done via a supportive blended environment. There is value in gathering and debating the issues with colleagues. To follow that up with further information, assessments, blogs, etc online also has value.
#satchat
Essential learning: #emotionalintelligence the behavior, expression & body language you see may not mean what you think it does; improve interaction & lessons & meetings by understanding self & each other @YaleEmotion#satchat
A5: So many great answers on here already. I think that I would emphasize using tools like Twitter to create and personalize your own pd. Teachers should be shown how Twitter can help them individualize their own collaborative pd. #satchat
But it is also not meaningless either. Figuring out how to use a new tool, or learning procedure that is important to the school is no less relevant than a PD on reading strategies. Just don’t call it PD. #SATCHAT
A5 - Cognitive sciences in the classroom -- How do we learn? What are limitations of memory and how are we using this knowledge as teachers and as students? #satchat
A5. Standards based grading. Mastery transcripts. Gradeless schools. Electronic portfolios.
In 20 years, we should look back at rows and grades and see them the way we view chalkboard slates and in-desk inkwells. #satchat
A5 Essential PD topics should include anything that empowers Ts to help develop Ss ability to think critically and become independent learners. I love Socratic seminar as an example of this! #SatChat@participate@ScottRRocco@wkrakower@TheBradCurrie
A5 I'd like to make reflection a topic to spend time with. Ts need time to reflect on prior PD and think about what they actually used from PDs, what worked, what didn't work, and if they didn't use any of it- why? #satchat#CollaborativePD
I believe in lesson choreography which is responsive to the learner -- rather than a tight plan that focuses on students as "robots" - learning experiences and lesson choreography is an artful act informed by science. #satchat
YES FROM THE MOUNTAINTOPS! I am a huge believer in the @EdcampUSA model. Some of best conversations, relationships, PD, etc. Can't say enuff abt it. #satchat#edcamp
In reply to
@ChristinaMLuce, @DCarlisto, @CNYTeacher, @participate, @sharemylesson, @AFTunion, @EdcampUSA
A5: moving forward it is the use of edtech that allows for personalization and variation for our individual Ss needs and how Ts can effectively integrate edtech in their instruction to prevent isolation for other content #satchat

A5 Different ways to empower Ss to take charge of their own learning: student-led P conferences, S self-assessment, enquiry learning, global learning #Satchat
A5: PD about improving the learning culture for all students is always helpful. Implementing SEL into our curriculum is another good one. Brain based learning is sorely needed for T's to assist with planning and preparing. Also alternative behavior management systems. #SatChat
A5: It’s important to give T’s a choice for topics of study. As differentiation has been mentioned earlier, I want T’s engaged with the PD that matters most to them for our kids growth. #satchat
A5 I like 2ask myself - what am I doing personally to improve? Why should it be dictated by others? I can read books, attend conferences/edcamps, learn from colleagues on twitter, visit other schools, have coffee w/colleagues, etc. Take ownership of your own PD to start #satchat
Strategies teachers want to share or learn about- Designing learning experiences using tech, civic engagement/ problem based learning, facilitating student conversations #satchat
A5- All edtech/curricular PD options are secondary if students are struggling with mental health/anxiety/stress- let's ensure teachers know how to recognize kids caught in unhealthy patterns- and also how to engage in self-care- #satchat
A5 Incorporating technology into learning and #PBL101 if they haven’t had it yet. PBL is so valuable a tool to really transform learning. Also G-suite if they are not well versed. #satchat
This is amazing We've been using @BlipparEDU for interactive bulletin boards and the community is excited about #ARVRinEDU Please DM me and share anything you are able. I'm happy to do the same. #satchathttps://t.co/XvtZJhpEIx
Yes. He is learning different tools like Aurasma, Metaverse, using our 3D camera; he is identifying one project at a time and proposing an alternate project to that teacher. Our goal: he will offer workshops for teachers after each project #satchat
More essential learning: #designthinking and applying it to curriculum revision; why are we teaching this? why are students learning this? And, start with the question "How might we...?" @lesmcbeth@fdesignschool#satchat
A5 - I see the PROCESS as most essential; the topics will organically show up as Ts genuinely reflect on their teaching, classroom, and professional goals. #SATCHAT
Honestly, PD topics need to come from teachers based on needs and desires but importantly I think topics that involve teaching for #equity, incorporating #edtech meaningfully, #SEL, teaching #literacy creatively, #projectbasedlearning, applying real world to content #satchat
#satchat Q5 Ts 100% need PD on how to determine the need to knows in the curriculum and that it is Ok to prioritise curriculum areas that will create endurance for students learning in the future. If we teach all the curriculum kids would be at school for 22 years.
I think we’ll have capacity soon so imagine PLN authentic communities of practice gathering in different virtual settings - beyond twitter :) Great Barrier Reef today, NYSCI tomorrow #satchat
Q5: Descriptive feedback is essential in moving students forward in their learning. Teachers also need opportunities to both provide & receive feedback to help us self reflect & #failforward. Bringing a lesson to a PD session to share with colleagues would be powerful. #satchat
A5: Strategies teachers want to share or learn about- Designing learning experiences using tech, civic engagement/ problem based learning, facilitating student conversations #satchat
A5. Will the core tenets really ever change? Won’t we always be improving in things like: differentiation, SEL enhancement, synthesizing tech, pedagogy, interdisciplinary exposures, etc? #satchat
Love this. All PD should be an ongoing conversation. That is how you get educators to not only apply and master what you’re teaching us... but to EXCEED it. #satchat
A4 Great that is is tied to twitter hashtags, recognizing that PD does not come in a wrapped package and needs to include the conversations that are happening in education at the moment. AND THERE’S A LIST OF CURRENT CHATS?!? I’m in love! #satchat

#Satchat is a great example of the power of social media to improve education, and the benefit of expanding an educator's Personal Learning Network (PLN). The premise behind this Twitter chat/hashtag came about when Scott Rocco.

Back in the early 90's I was an avid fan of Saturday morning cartoons and I can remember a time when we were treated to these great "After these messages..." bumpers from ABC. Man, these bring back some memories.....
-💀-
#SaturdayMorning#SatChat
A5 Not easily answered in a few characters. I’ll try....tech for learning, literacy, academic engagement, safety, restorative practices.....so much to learn and so little time. #satchat
A2 Elements crucial for success... knowing that we are learners ourselves! No matter what degree we have we need to keep growing& learning!! If this is missing then you are wasting the presenters time! Could be working w/others who want to grow! #satchat
A5: Growth mindset and Collaboration are key topics. However, it's more about the process of professional development that individual topics. Frame it so teachers choose topics most relevant to them and their practice, and then deliver content produced by their peers. #satchat
Restorative Justice is what my school desperately needs. I have an old-school dean and our students need a new school approach. Punitive is not corrective. #satchat
A5. PD Topics include:
1. having classroom mgmt with technology in the room;
2. how to use the technology for teaching;
3. how to allow for student voice & choice and stay on topic;
4. how to use specific tools;
5. team building
#satchat
And tech could be the platform by and through which that story is drafted and told. And platform is different from program. The best stories are told with a beginning moving through middle and resolving. Programs have a algorithms. Storytellers have a natural rhythm. #satchat
#satchat A5: Teachers need meaningful PD that they can bring back to their classroom and begin implementing with their students. More PD around technology is helpful for classrooms that are 1:1. #gafefsu@csheil@mmarotta
Collaboration and the acoidance of groupthink is necessary! Tolerance for candor! That's a point in the direction of an Accountable Learning Organization. #satchat
A5: PD topics on my list
1. Google Classroom
2. Apps for teaching & learning
3. The latest research on teaching young readers
4. Inquiry based learning
#satchat
Agreed! You might like the book #BoldSchool by @Wes_Kieschnick. It’s all about keeping old school strategies (THAT WORK), but enhancing them with new tech. #satchat
We just surveyed and analyzed the results of all K-12 curricular areas. You have to provide the PD that teachers are asking for...while at the same time reading through the lines to ask: “What would help with this?” #satchat
A5: Global learning is a must for PD in order to adequately prepare students for the global economy, but Ts need autonomy on how PD is delivered @Levelupvillage#satchat
A6: Empowering students through teacher PD and development :) We must give students the lead for our PD, as in we are here to meet their needs, we must listen! #satchat
A5 Different ways to empower Ss to take charge of their own learning: student-led P conferences, S self-assessment, enquiry learning, global learning #Satchat
A great teacher will find a way to use the technology as a tool to help their students learn. The technology is relevant to kids, but won’t help students learn if the teacher is not invested in doing so. #satchat
Fascinating. I am just starting to use @Twitter for my own professional learning (this is my 1st time popping into #satchat!) but find the format to sometimes be limiting. How do you really get into deep conversations? How do you move beyond 280 characters into real growth?
In reply to
@CJCain7, @participate, @Twitter, @voxer, @Twitter
I'd love to see more PD around experiential learning. But there's a catch: if this is the topic, please don't make me sit through a slideshow lecture PD #satchat
Also w/learning choreography - all stakeholders including students, teachers, family members, community members -- are involved in the creation, implementation, results, analysis, forward movement #satchat
YES FROM THE MOUNTAINTOPS! I am a huge believer in the @EdcampUSA model. Some of best conversations, relationships, PD, etc. Can't say enuff abt it. #satchat#edcamp
In reply to
@ChristinaMLuce, @DCarlisto, @CNYTeacher, @participate, @sharemylesson, @AFTunion, @EdcampUSA
A5: Instructional Design. If we are aiming to transform learning we must transform teaching. We must assure the pedagogical shifts are occurring that the transform student task and improve outcomes for all learners. #satchat@participate#JeffcoGenerations
A3 Keeping active Learning Ambassador type programs, hosting in person events, hosting online events, soliciting feedback and acting on the best of it, also keeping costs as minimal as possible for educators. Fell behind here. Breakfast time with the kids! #satchat
Maybe it is perspective? I look at PD as you get better or worse each day, never quite staying the same-proactively learning on your own terms leads 2growth, while waiting for the monthly meeting, PD or yearly in service alone leads to complacency. #satchat
Cool. Reminds me of when I was active in Second Life. Been quite sometime since I was online for it. But VR would be fun! Who says u can't have fun while learning! #satchat
#satchat Q5 All Ts need a copy of Marzano's work will change your thinking about how you teach the curriculum. My new bible had my teachers this week developing proficiency scales are deciding between need know and nice to know curriculum standards.
A1: Our systems are often designed for one size fits all and... they are either faculty update or first year instruction. Research is telling us that there is a gap between delivery models and satisfaction. #satchat
A5. It’s not always something new. Sometimes it’s digging deeper into our never ending list of challenges such as literacy, academic engagement, prevention of bullying, restorative practices, and teaching lessons that include need, novelty, meaning & emotion. #satchat
A5 designing units of inquiry, cultivating an environment of mindfulness and growth mindsets, the learner profile in action, integrating technology effectively #satchat
Q6: REAL-TIME #CollaborativePD SHOW AND TELL! Look back at responses from Q5, pick a PD topic someone mentioned, and share your favorite resources, tips or tools! #satchat
#Edtech is a tool. Relationships and sound pedagogy matter so much more
@googledu does not make a great lesson. The teacher does.
Google doesn’t build relationships, counsel, hold high expectations, or uplift. The teacher does.
#SatChat
A5: integrating the arts and humanities into your classroom. We need to be reminded of the power of comprehensive, Arts-based education. #satchathttps://t.co/zELcplXTUl
Thank you @mitchellvii! You are an important cog in our political machine. Without you we could not get Mr Trump’s misinformation out to his wonderfully gullible supporters. Thank you ❤️ #SaturdayMorning#satchat
A5: we are in the midst of writing tech plan for next 3 yrs, updating PD plan as well, looking at #ISTE stds and #CSforALL, and feel we need our students to be collaborators computational thinkers, & GLOBAL problem solvers. We need to bring staff along! #satchat
#satchat A5: Teachers need meaningful PD that they can bring back to their classroom and begin implementing with their students. More PD around technology is helpful for classrooms that are 1:1. #gafefsu@csheil@mmarotta
Welcome! You're right! It can be limiting - but for me TwitterChats have been a great way to meet new like-minded educators and innovators so that I can develop digital relationships. There are many ppl I've never met in "real life" that I trust for feedback and support! #satchat
In reply to
@ligayabeebe, @CJCain7, @participate, @Twitter, @voxer
A5 #satchat I think about connecting educators who are weaving technology and the @TeachSDGs in meaningful ways. For me, their is no greater purpose than the @TheGlobalGoals So many opportunities for students to learn alongside each other. Lots of ways to connect virtually...
RB Saquon Barkley had 29 bench press reps and a 41” vertical leap at the 2018 Combine.
The only player with 25+ bench press reps and a 40+ inch vertical at the 2017 Combine was eventual #1 overall pick DE Myles Garrett (33 reps, 41” vertical)
@PennStateFball@saquonb21
A5: Digital citizenship, growth mindset, 4 C's to name a few. I think it would be amazing to have some regular must-do "sessions" as a part of an Edcamp style PD day. Make it fun, inspiring, and teacher led as much as possible. #satchat
I agree! The #growthmindset is program that should be equally focused on Ts as Ss. Broader #SEL too. All should be incorporated into PD vision, but rarely is achieved by a sage on a state #satchat
I want to spend part of this weekend in a little quiet personal/professional development looking at @participate. I like the name and the feel. Too many programs make my activity (read "participation") feel passive. This is not the engagement for which we were looking. #satchat
A5: My PD topic wish list: Teaching students the art of questioning, how to live in a world of constant info, and making the most of the time when less is given and more is expected. #satchat
A5 #satchat Use student data to drive PD sessions. Find the gaps and implement PD on what our students struggle with. This can be grade level and as a whole. Equip teachers with new strategies and PLCs to assist in student achievement.
A5: integrating the arts and humanities into your classroom. We need to be reminded of the power of comprehensive, Arts-based education. #satchathttps://t.co/zELcplXTUl
Alice, you should know I heard a bunch of teachers at #ICE18 so inspired after hearing your featured talk. Keep on doing what you are doing, and nice moves @amber_heffner for putting that all together with such a wonderful team. #satchat

Yes. Somehow as an admin we lose sight that we are all learners, admin, Tchrs, students, staff, etc. Having all voice at the table makes the conversation inclusive. #satchat

@alicekeeler, @ChristinaMLuce, @DCarlisto, @CNYTeacher, @participate, @sharemylesson, @AFTunion, @EdcampUSA
Partnerships are game changing. I co-teach with my grade one partner and have done so for ten years. Teaching lessons together and having opportunities to learn new ideas to improve our individual skillset is incredibly valuable. Tap into those around you to learn more #satchat
working on a keynote I'm giving this morning.... way to leave it to the last minute :) Have Twitter open on the side :) #satchat Great to meet you in person!
A6) This is such a good back to the basics reminder of good principals of instruction. By Barak Rosenshine. I reread it once a month! https://t.co/RDoKRJ4kqI#satchat
A5. Next school year - for Principals - joining #BookCampPD in March and learning about "The Principled Principal" and in April "Culturize" - so as a learning leader you could decide if they are books you want to move forward w/ at your school over the summer #satchat
As a very independent-learner, I really like the scales provided by Marzano for self-reflection. It also helps teachers to use the same "vocab" and see that although content might be different they are working on the same thing for their personal PD.
#satchat
A3) There are PD platforms like PD360 that provide PD lessons. I think the #edtech tools are there to make it happen, we just need to put our brilliant minds together to figure out how #satchat
A5. So many pd topics are essential (student engagement and curriculum are my current top 2) but the challenge continues to be to not overwhelm teachers with one topic after another - give time to learn, implement, reflect, revisit, etc. #satchat
It's a process like everything else. You will see after you join multiple chats over a period of time. I look forward to the couple I 'attend' daily & weekly...

A5: Our library is slowly transforming into a collaborative learning environment. No longer the quiet room. It’s awesome to see! Thinking about potential opportunities 🤔. #satchat
Reach out to @SraMcNeilly I’m not sure if she does online PD, but her digital citizenship class and passion project would be an invaluable asset to any school in any climate #satchat
Wow #Satchat ! What a topic. Even though I've been "meaningfully engaged", I'm going to need to scroll back and see all that I missed. That's my kind of "problem"!
A1: After learning something new, we need time to digest it, play it, and experience it. Finding the time right away is a challenge. #gafefsu#satchat@csheil@mmarotta
The connections made on the side take it much further. I have 2 DM's from this chat. We share contact info & continue to build and learn with each other. I've built many strong professional relationships starting w/ Twitter. #satchat

A6: Favourite resource is #InnovatorsMindset by @gcouros It inspires me to be an innovative leader and encourages me to empower my staff to innovate! #satchat
A6: Strategies that work from brain based research: @AceThatTest & @PoojaAgarwal are my go to resources. Love @gttribe for great tech integration of all things Google. #satchat
A2: collaborative PD needs 1. personalization 2. Value added (staying relevant, personal confidence, pay increase, ever learner) 3. Deliberately scheduled/allotted time with no other demands. #satchat
And I think whoever figures this out will change learning possibilities as they exist now .. key for me is not isolating learners from each other #satchat
A6: for inquiry-based learning @OpalSchool has amazing resources; for @Self_Reg check out the work of @StuartShanker - I can't recommend his books highly enough- #satchat
A6: For those seeking to enhance PD around K-6 literacy, my colleagues and I just published a resource we’re excited about. It bridges the research with practical tips about what to actually do in your classroom. Coming in April. #satchat
Absolutely! It’s the first podcast I started listening to and it’s introduced me to so many other things that have helped me grow professionally. #superexcited#satchat

"The Influence of Teaching Beyond Standardized Test Scores: Engagement, Mindsets, and Agency" addresses how Edtech, PBL, etc... can positive impact student agency which covers many of the topics mentioned #satchat
Just read an article in @afronews authored by James Wright. The question I have is what has happened to partnering with Parents regarding truancy? The accountability should fall on Parents. Why is your child absent?#Schools#DCPS#satchat
A5: Modeling & allowing Ts to experience what it is like when you give Ss a participation grade for trying, making mistakes, teaching one another; this is a hard concept in #highered where grades are at the forefront of success & they don't see value #satchat@goAEFIS
One issue that exacerbates the "whack-a-mole" approach is principal & superintendent turnover--issues too often ignored. Both are serious impediments to school improvement efforts. And high-poverty schools have greatest turnover rates. #satchat
Current PD systems are often lacking an anchor in a clearly articulated PD plan that supports a vision. I’ve seen too much “Wacko-A-Mole PD” that jumps from topic to topic (reactionary PD) & that doesn’t impact practice, behaviors or thinking! #satchat
Agree w/you here--there are so many wonderful ways to learn, and it's about creating those learning paths w/Ss that matter, analyzing along the way. #satchat
A6: Already mentioned, but @edpuzzle has great stuff on flipped learning, 21st century & personalized learning. It's a great start. https://t.co/HGklnfE1Tq#satchat
When I coach students doing research I ask them to list everything they think they know about their topic, then turn each statement in to a question (that doesn't lead to their answer), then ask all the questions they can't answer about the topic #satchat
A5 Topics on my radar for this year: Leadership (especially Religious Leadership in the context of Catholic Education), Coaching, Curriculum, Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, all of the how to or how do I questions, especially from new Ts.
#satchat
A5.1- What I want to see more of is applications of teaching self help/ socio emotional skills/ self advocacy / and reading strategies.
Instead we spend 2 hours in a PD about Growth Mindset.
Why?
It’s vapid and easy. Real pedagogy requires experts.
#SatChat
Here's PD from Science4Us. Teachers get to struggle with the challenges and thrills that they are about to guide their Ss through #growthmindset#satchat
Totally with you on this. Need to keep the focus on our students and the AWESOME things they can and will so. Students first! This is my WHY! #MyWhy#satchat

A5: I want to see more PD that allows me to see examples of how others are empowering students to guide their own learning journeys! I want to be able to collaborate with those who are working towards the same goals and learn and grow with them! #satchat
Thanks to @sylviaduckworth for this visual that reflects the importance of a #PLN , that so many of you already work so hard to develop and support! Such an honour to journey with so many of you! #satchat@participate@JenWilliamsEdu
A5) I think establishing your goals as teachers/administrators/districts starts the conversation to designing the PD. PD should reflect what you are trying to accomplish #satchat
A6 The Racial Equity Insitute has great resources and training to help educators examine bias in individuals and institutions and begin to address the inequities our students of color face.
https://t.co/sxMFxTAiUW#satchat
#satchat I have seen teachers use @Socrative to easily gather data and then apply it to struggles students have with parts of the unit. Good warm up tool.
A5 #satchat Use student data to drive PD sessions. Find the gaps and implement PD on what our students struggle with. This can be grade level and as a whole. Equip teachers with new strategies and PLCs to assist in student achievement.
Love how @lookforsun 's article starts: "Lesson intent does not equal lesson employed. Why? Because it involves people--thoughtful, active people with voice and response." For me, an AHA moment! Thx #satchat
In reply to
@lookforsun, @amberabruner, @lookforsun
#satchat Those are great and needed topics. I would get buy-in from your teachers first. Of course, I know that's easier said than done. I'd talk to the progressive & welcoming ones first. I would love it if I were asked to help creatively teach and learn with my peers.
You have some good points. But I think they would mean more if we knew who you were. Being anonymous isn’t a great way to have a professional conversations #satchat
Interesting, Ed. I'd love to explore this further. Thinking. @participate@spirrison Future chat topic? Podcast episode? This definitely is an area in need of addressing. STAT! #satchat

There are really useful Facebook groups created around certain pedagogy where teachers discuss and share tools and approaches - like the Metaverse group and Facebook Educators group #satchat
Here are some concrete examples of strategies to support English Learners including:
*Metacognitive development
*Bridging
*Schema Building
*Contextualization
*Text Representation
*Modeling

Next week Brad, Billy and I are moderating a convo on Summer Learning & Programs for Students and Teachers
Hope to see you then! Enjoy the weekend
A5: Working at an alternative school leads me to say: PD on restorative practices. As the year goes on, it is important to not only “air out” grievances, but to get to the root of behavior issues so everyone can move on and focus on student achievement. #satchat
The rest of my day involves, Grading, Writing a Research Paper, Booster Dad for Badminton, and a B-Day party. Hope to see you tomorrow for #HackLearning as we Hack PD. #satchat
A6: 1:1 conversations are always more effective than remote connections. I enjoy connecting with my PLN, but Listening to colleagues and sharing face-to-face is the best. Can't wait for 3/16 in Saranac lake, talking PD and PLNs #slgrows@DCarlisto@mrpeterkim#satchat
Q6: REAL-TIME #CollaborativePD SHOW AND TELL! Look back at responses from Q5, pick a PD topic someone mentioned, and share your favorite resources, tips or tools! #satchat
A6. Host a #CoffeeEdu or a “speed innovating” session (follows the concept of speed dating but teachers rotate to share something innovative for schools)! #satchat
A5. As learning leaders you often select books that Districts or schools will move forward in purchasing - please - first stop by #BookCampPD and gain an understanding if the content of the book matches the #PD your setting needs at this time. #satchat
A6: I have incorporated @Flipgrid into our advisory time, Ss or Ts respond, Both get exposure as Ss, and I use the resposes to share, even downloading and creating montages through @Animoto. In turn have had Ts using in their instruction #satchat
Yes, so much of this! Admitting there have been times I’ve thought, “They are doing this job because they weren’t very good in the classroom with kids.”😳 #SatChat
PD that is inspired by teachers, co-created by teachers and lead by teachers is often the most powerful professional learning based on my experience! #satchat
A1. Hopefully many have read the valuable aspects mention in @RACzyz book and are beginning to put them into place in their schools/Districts? #satchat
#satchat
Moronic narcissistic tRump consumes people & nation.
Lying Trump, a Russian asset, betrays Nation & God by manipulating the ignorant & uneducated by using warped Christian & patriotic values, & lies from Fox fake news.
Cowardly Congress ignores rule of law & oath.
Agreed! New leadership can change the culture of a school or division, for better or worse. Continuity is important, and building on prior success is essential. #satchat
THAT'S A WRAP!

A6: So many topics were about how to effectively use tech in the classroom. EVERYONE, should listen to @GTeacherTribe! @jmattmiller & @ShakeUpLearning are always sharing great new ideas, but keeping learning as the focus. #superexcited to share this resource! #satchat

Hmmm...we’re going to need a tricked-out conference room, some cots or at least recliners, unlimited strong coffee, and a few weeks/months of uninterrupted isolation! #PDGoals#satchat
We are just bringing it to our teachers but they are so bogged down by the curriculum that are actually looking for support and answers for ways to do things more efficiently. #satchat
Thanks! Will check it out! I signed up for a class that has a Facebook group but haven’t had the time to get in there!!! Need more time or less things in plate! #satchat
Día Mundial de la Naturaleza 2018.
es motivo de celebración para los amantes del medio ambiente, pero también una ocasión única para concienciarnos sobre la importancia de su preservación para la salud del planeta y, cómo no, de nuestra propia supervivencia.
Truth! So many times, I have been in PD and learned something great- then went to the next session and the next session - and back to work. Without time to practice and implement, professional learning leads to “I know about it, but I haven’t tried it.” #satchat
Not meaning to take the focus away from our discussion, but if you can make the time on Monday, please join us for #Admin2b . I am honoured to be serving as guest moderator. No matter your edu role, it would be great to have you join us! #satchat@participate@JenWilliamsEdu
Perhaps a core issue with PD is that teachers do not see things as admins see things and admins do not see as teachers (though since they once were teachers, they think they do)? Perhaps the answer is found in authentic conversation about each definition of reality? #satchat
Explore restorative practices. It has implications far beyond school and classroom. It is a way of helping students reflect, take responsibility and learn from misdeeds....something we all must do daily. #satchat
A6 - @kmurfitt1 shared "teaching Ss the art of asking questions"
Engage Ss in their learning process, they don't have to wait for Ts to tell them how they're 'doing'. Student-led conferences are one powerful strategy for doing just this... https://t.co/oPhqJybJuQ#SATCHAT
-Take a book, leave a book?
-A collaborative journal/guestbook (would need to be lightly monitored but might be awesome)?
-Adult coloring pages and markers?
-Some system where the kids could repaint it occasionally by proposing a mural and getting community approval?
#satchat
