Join our Crew at 8pm ET tonight as Guest Moderates on Welcoming Diverse Perspectives.
At my school we run the University Model of PD. I'm trying to make it more efficient and effective.
Good morning peeps. How r we this fine Tuesday AM? Ready to go?
GM dear friends. TL from SoMD. I lead PD on topics of interest and provide follow up/support!
Good morning. John Clements from Nipmuc Regional High School. Checking in for my first . Glad to be here.
Feed them tasty treats and coffee, and let them think that they are teaching others - control of own learning!
Optional PD? Not that I know of.
Good morning ! Tiawana, Assistant Principal of PK-5 Elem. from chilly, rainy, Central Virginia checking in on this Super Tuesday.
Signups in the Fall and Spring for after school PD.
Good morning! Kathy from NY popping in with coffee in hand
In my experience, best way to engage colleagues in PD is to ensure that offerings connect to expressed needs...whenever possible.
Good Morning Happy Tuesday!
Morning! Prof Learning ~ Teacher led: Ts recognize & respect experts in their own bldg. Relevance. Clear connections to S success
Good morning Kathy. Great to have you back
Good morning . Excited for today's topic
Offer PD that matters to them. IE, Don't force PE teachers into a Math session.
Good morning! Oona from NJ here. I teach ELA to 11th and 12th grade.
Some come to opt.PD because they're truly interested while others are just looking for PLP pts.My hope is everyone learns something.
Good Morning! Thank you! Any chance you can tweet my class pics of the babies? I was telling them yesterday.
I guess the next thing I'd ask is: Are there competencies teachers work to meet/fulfill for which PD can help?
Good morning Lori from OH joining in!
What is the University Model?
Been thinking that an Edcamp PD would be better than a University Model. Under our union rules it would force participation.
. Good morning! Susan from the Jersey Shore waking under a Snow Moon....kids should be nutty today! Seat belts on!
Food always gets them there :)
We allow Ts to design their own PD for the year. Has to b new&have a direct impact on their class. Those r the rules
Would love to do it at my school. Get Ts interested in the format so they go to camps outside of school.
. Excited that we've been leaning that way as well. Last week we had this https://t.co/DlIJ3PQKnF It was fantastic!
Also, offer PD anytime, anywhere. We're using OAH, record them and share.
We held a building-wide that helped introduce people to a lot of new ideas. Many now taking PD classes in , , etc.
good morning. I still need mine!
Completely agree. I <3 to share the source of my knowledge to encourage others to do PD. :))
But there's so much math in PE!!!!!! I guess I should put math teachers in a PE session then.
every month myself or other teacher offer sessions. The goal Is to reach 15.
We’ve supported PD by partnering with other schools to run edchats. Connecting educators & building a PLN. https://t.co/sFWL7mNdq3
I hold after school (but before time Ts can leave) training sessions based on T identified needs.
By talking it up and showing the impact it has on me and my students.
I cannot wait to attend my first this summer. Come with me?
Good morning, . PD is a topic dear and near to my heart. I'm Ku, Learning Coach, Argentina
Right now, most of school-based is mandatory & aimed at clsrm. Ts. We have done one style that Ts liked. Want to do more.
I will send some after this chat. They are on my phone which is on the charger at moment.
yes made a difference here even hosting our own in April more Ts involved https://t.co/A8rjjR4AAJ
Would love to do it at my school. Get Ts interested in the format so they go to camps outside of school.
After school sessions by choice run by colleagues.
Morning Amy from MD here!
Ask what they want/need. Be or find the person who can help them grow in it. Assess what they know, take them from there
Good morning . Brian from Mass.
We have held edcamp like PD days during the year.
Perfect! No rush! Thank you!
Good morning friends! Christina from MD
Yes! The interest/need has to be there.
Good morning I offer weekly Tech PD sessions during Ts planning times!
PD particip is 1 thing, implementing in classrooms is another! Write prof growth plan w/action steps & evidence of implementation
Good morning. Steve from NJ here! I try to offer PD that is engaging through our district teacher led PD program
PD at my school isn't optional unless there is a consultant who comes to work w/specific groups or only volunteers can participate.
I see a lot of people saying teacher-driven. Absolutely! My principal asks us what we need and seeks that out for us.
Rich from PA/NJ. Great topic this morning!
We do quick tech tips/best practices during faculty meetings.
I sign up to present at sta
Welcome, John! is the best way to start the day!
. That's disappointing...for your staff. We've mixed traditional & edcamp-style w/great results. ^engagement ^empowerment
Doing T-led PD every week (in Critical Friends), by observing each other via Classroom Rounds, by using a great instructional coach.
Hi Christina! How are you?
Even if every T wants training in the same area, don't assume they all know the same amount https://t.co/kr2PemEpFh
I'm exploring and other ways to excite Ts. Time is never on my side even when we get creative.
Good Morning. Since so many have mentioned here is My Conference page https://t.co/UcFO8CdQYX that has listing of them
. Small district, you sit through what they offer. Not much in way of choices. Need to go outside for specific needs.
Love the model, enthusiasm and ability to choose works to bring new people in and raise level of excitement
PD has to be pull and not push! When it's pull there is so, so much more interest and engagement!
Going to first edcamp in March
Best PD participation has been decamp, moderated in-house twitter chat, and teacher-run pedagogy sessions.
Love hearing about this everytime you mention it! The choice part is powerful
I also put a Tech Tip of the week in my weekly e-mail newsletter.
Currently I am facilitating a PD on Twitter chats. Each participant will participate in 3 chats through the course
Love the edcamp approach to PD!!
and with coffee also ( did you get yours yet ????) https://t.co/B7OwfCDiLm
Welcome, John! is the best way to start the day!
We do the University model and get the same exact teachers every time despite variety.
Yeah! I cannot make that one. :(
I like this. Shows that you in the building are experts in various things.
Best PD participation has been edcamp, moderated in-house twitter chat, and teacher-run pedagogy sessions.
Completely agree. Before we do edcamp like PD sessions we send out a survey to find out Ts interests.
First answer to how was my weekend: Great! I went to EDcamp on Saturday. 2nd answer: finished book I was reading.
I sign up to present at state conferences. Then I encourage them to laugh at me. ;)
It is but its not functioning as it should.
that's a problem. It's hard to get Ts excited when it's forced. How can we reignite passion for learning?
were you at session with Jo Boeler at the NJ conf yesterday?
I'm well, how was your break? Missed you last week
Agree w/ Lori - and how do those plans mesh w/ larger school and district plans? https://t.co/3RDSOLOTD5
PD particip is 1 thing, implementing in classrooms is another! Write prof growth plan w/action steps & evidence of implementation
Indeed! There must be a system of follow-up, evaluation, and refinement. We use this model: https://t.co/nP1J1ZKICa
Our district has been doing a lot of in house training. Training teachers to go back and train others in their building
Our Tech team just hosted 2nd . a cohort taking Visible Thinking via & just started differentiation plc.
What was the topic today?
Nice! I'd love to hear how that goes. Had a lot of Ts show to my Twitter session last week. encouraging.
Actually, the PE teachers at Naperville in IL have to do a lot of math!
yes, we just are finishing our first Staff book club chat group on Twitter also expanded Ts participation https://t.co/MRgabNYzBN
Best PD participation has been edcamp, moderated in-house twitter chat, and teacher-run pedagogy sessions.
Has anyone hear of PD360? They are looking into that in my district.
Good morning- Mia from Central Fla
Ts also get a Diigo message every Monday w/articles I curate for them
Good luck! Met some first-timers this weekend. Enjoyed and learned.
Food is the way to their hearts, on the way to their stomachs...and, hopefully, their minds! 😄😄😄
I'm on the fence on this. I used to think choice was the key, but I don't know if the right info is making it through.
We also have something called SIPs for small doses of PD started last year by . 30 min of PD given by Ts. Options abound!
We have been doing Inquiry Based Learning training with and a neighboring school district.
Love the Twitter chat idea, but not many of our Ts use Twitter....YET! https://t.co/iDWdg2G9CU
Best PD participation has been edcamp, moderated in-house twitter chat, and teacher-run pedagogy sessions.
will that be your first ? https://t.co/eYumdAAy0Y
I'm planning on going to and have invited others from my school to ride with me.
I always have food. It's the least I can do when Ts give up their after school time. https://t.co/EUTMlAXqoU
Food always gets them there :)
- For those that do EdCamp style PD... Is it district-wide or within each ind school?
Something to remember: when we go to conferences, it's not over until we share our learning with our colleagues.
The most challenging PD is compliant listening to speakers for hours without any activity or follow-up.
Was the same for me at former school.
What book did you use for your staff study?
Best moments for me a the side bar one-to-one conversations "let me show you this cool trick". Why I like Edcamp model
Laugh "with" you, April? Not "at," right? :)
Differentiate for staff too! Offer PD sessions/choice: staff meeting time, planning time, after school. https://t.co/ekXxI5j5gY
It's PD all day long on voxer, especially but also flipping edu and genius hour
Lacrosse. Last years was at Ethel Walker in August.
We are going towards the direction of offering more choices. Teachers' natural strengths & talents come out when they love their PD.
At our last PD, I was delighted to put talents to use and teach Ts about . and did wkshps too!
would love to see examples and guidelines.
I co-moderate a district wide Twitter chat for leaders in the county every other Sunday 8PM
The platform for that is often what seems to be missing. Ts return eager to share, but how? When? Where?
for us it was in our upper HS & MS https://t.co/duUnjOjS2a
- For those that do EdCamp style PD... Is it district-wide or within each ind school?
I do same, have yet to get anyone to attend Saturday PD, but district having own "unconference" next month! https://t.co/jHr0OUp4E7
Who moderates the Twitter chat?
like every volunteer situation. Same Ts. Same PTA ppl. Same youth sports coaches. Now, how to change that???
I would love to get badges going here--need Ts to be on same platform. Thought about Edmodo maybe.
Planned on but it was cancelled due to snow.
Podcasts are easy to listen to on drives. Can share by emailing links to colleagues.
Did yest. Ss thought it was funny that it was hot in Australia
A1: Admin model, empower, & encourage Ts. As Ts improve together staff & individual & moral increases. - collective efficacy.
Hey there, Steve. BTW, when you're at be sure to look for peeps attending. I'll give you their names.
My district offers tons of PD after school.Diverse & relevant topics.i wish I could go to everything but I need my family time too!
We r doing a book study right now of DITCH that Textbook! On demand asynchronous learning for our Ts and Admins!
. Love small schools, but with small district comes sacrifices. PD and funding is an example. https://t.co/ZtSNNIsumG
Was the same for me at former school.
Teach Like a Pirate, last chat tonight new one starts in April https://t.co/JpsasDhOeF
What book did you use for your staff study?
BEST PD sessions are the one you find yourself ... they matter to you and your world not fulfilling a district mandate.
Brown bag lunches also spark interest and give Ts a sample of PD programs available in the district.
we just chose . Very excited about the possibilities.
and just did this in our ELA department meeting yesterday! https://t.co/lN5y7yC75e
Something to remember: when we go to conferences, it's not over until we share our learning with our colleagues.
AND, be allowed to update plans along the way! Sorry, where are my manners?! Good morning, ! https://t.co/iXDiQfkzgd
can't wait to see what it's all about.
Yes! Enjoying a nice CaffeVerona with you all this morning!
Wordpress has some nice extensions that do badges
Make PD a collaborative, affirming activity: What can you add to PD? Let's see if WE can make a tech -lab together.
hopefully you will run into some of them through the week loon for and more. I'll be tagging
We are small too. Sometimes we combine resources & do PD with 2 other small districts. Is that a possibility by you?
I usually just find something I'm passionate about and accost them into meeting up during a spare period to show them cool stuff.
I taught in Lake Forest, IL for 13 yrs. Not too far from naperville!
Like ? https://t.co/PGVBN3qVb5
BEST PD sessions are the one you find yourself ... they matter to you and your world not fulfilling a district mandate.
Very hard for Ss to get head around different weather and time zones.
My district offers a wide range of PD for the staff. its god to know we have that support.
excellent a day with out caffeine is well, it's not a day .... https://t.co/EVeL3KfwcE
Yes! Enjoying a nice CaffeVerona with you all this morning!
OK, all: is making breakfast for everyone this morning! :) Food goes with any sort of PD right?
Saw her on periscope yesterday.
ECET2 has been a powerful PD for teachers by teachers
Thanks for asking. We are just starting to brand as a way to share our learning when people travel away for PD.
Your area hit hard this year.
Family first! Chats like this rock for that reason! At my school, lucky to have unit lunch, common time mid day
Twitter is the best PD ever. I can attend what I want when I want with the best educators around Wish I could get Pd credit for it!
The movement has been great for bringing educators to the table - coffee and conversation
I try to find the person at school who knows the thing I want to know and buy them a coffee. PD doesn't need to be formal.
PD Goal: to be more excited about education than before the PD. Personalized, focused on choice topics & with passionate educators.
Am going to begin PD one afternoon a month--starting w/book fair in a couple of weeks. Informal, T-centered & snacks!
This goes back to some of that "culture" conversation we've had here
True. I'm at a very small school, so I can address the whole staff for 10 minutes at a staff meeting or run a PD.
The best PD is NOT 1-size-fits-all. Use this T-led model and more Ts will take advantage. Guaranteed. https://t.co/NEZSJwesKQ
Teacher, like students, get excited about learning when it applies to them ... they can see why it matters.
Will do. I haven't seen much. But I like the individualized learning part.
Love 'on demand' professional learning support...virtual opportunities (like via Twitter and archived videos) are great!
Choice is essential! Every T is a work in progress with different needs and wants!
Did you creat guidelines for the chat as part of the book study? https://t.co/hDCtGayS0p
We r doing a book study right now of DITCH that Textbook! On demand asynchronous learning for our Ts and Admins!
Agreed it's a time crunch during school year, but this helped force it grateful to for staring it https://t.co/mAJsULDUsr
Love this Eric. So hard to get Ts to read. Oops! Did I just say that? Well, it's true. Sometimes feel like a nerd. https://t.co/YrzNxQNqqF
Oh, and I got the idea from at !
Email is surprisingly helpful, too, I've found. Just send out a brief description, and let those interested find me.
That's awesome. My principal does book clubs throughout year but great way to continue convo during summer
It's hard in the huge, huge districts too. There must be a "right size" district for PD Offering 😊
This was one of the first Chats I started with when it first started. Great way to start the day.. https://t.co/riu8U47LvG
I've been away a couple of weeks. So glad to see so many new faces :).
In May, members of my dept will share their genius hour PD outcomes. I'm so fortunate to have that as an opportunity!
need to get admin on board with giving up some control of PD !! Ours did and it worked https://t.co/pQwL4Sut4a
Thanks! I'd be interested in starting EdCamp style PD...just not sure where to begin!
Have a great Tuesday, friends! Great to be back in the fold, even for a few moments. :)
Still do my Summer lrng challenge inspired by but would love more Ts to join and maybe do it during the yr
Only 2 minutes left in this sparkchat and I could keep talking to y'all for another hour solid!
. Been mentioned, but not yet. We joined a consortium, but choices are limited. We shall see! *cross fingers* https://t.co/JfVAkQDIK8
We are small too. Sometimes we combine resources & do PD with 2 other small districts. Is that a possibility by you?
Ditto! We'd have doctorate degrees by now! 😉 https://t.co/kpEhqfQ9tG
Twitter is the best PD ever. I can attend what I want when I want with the best educators around Wish I could get Pd credit for it!
Thanks for a great chat this morning! Have a great day!
yes I have wondered what would happen if I tried claiming my twitter hours as PD credit
Sure. Happy to share. What would you like to know?
and reading blogs, watching videos, talking with other educators, not about learning hardware/software
Obviously the is committed to growth and change, but my f2f PLN resists change and that may be why PD is hard to encourage?
Recentlly my school was invited by to participate in an edchat between schools in diff parts of the state. Great PD!
We are exlporing PD360 (forgot the new name) any thoughts or experience?
The best PD is teacher sharing and anytime we can take it directly into our classrooms.
I think we need to consider the observation process in this. Teachers should be guided towards PD in their feedback. Guide them.
Good Morning, ! We found great success with Unconferences https://t.co/RJ5S1uZrck and want to try "ignite rounds" to share resources
that sounds like fun! I'd love to use Voxer more within my school/district. Such a convenient tool
Tomorrow will ask:
In what ways can MAKING translate into LEARNING in your subject, role, or space? https://t.co/MhUJN6lK2C
Seriously, I have learned so much here. Keeps teaching exciting! https://t.co/SwFsPeK1VL
yes I have wondered what would happen if I tried claiming my twitter hours as PD credit
Tomorrow will ask:
In what ways can MAKING translate into LEARNING in your subject, role, or space? https://t.co/1SCTgDTwbq
Wednesday on We ask the question: How can MAKING translate into LEARNING in your classroom, role, or space? Looking forward to it.
Thanks . Have a great Tuesday!
You all have a Tuesday !! https://t.co/klrbKaYmq3
Obviously the is committed to growth and change, but my f2f PLN resists change and that may be why PD is hard to encourage?
Sometimes you just have to offer PD on your own ... and I do help sessions ... teachers helping teachers
It can and does happen, but Ts need to get in it to win it. Take the risk, self advocate, be the squeaky wheel
We just did building-wide & it went well. Neighboring school did district wide: Split into elementary, middle & HS
We provide sub coverage one day a week for Ts to go and observe others - seeing ideas in action
Make PD meaningful. Survey staff, to see what's needed by whom. Individualized p.d. Model what you expect! Be amazing everyone
R district used it a while back. The experience was not positive
No. Very informal. On a voluntary basis. Ts contribute when they want/can. This is our 1st attempt
That is just awesome! https://t.co/9Gqe3AuaYB
our district offers were we can get credit. It's a great option & I've participated. I
Great point. Staff can get stuck in the rut of being comfortable. Look 4 ways to empower them 2 try new PD https://t.co/MJHoRUgDlI
Obviously the is committed to growth and change, but my f2f PLN resists change and that may be why PD is hard to encourage?
unfortunately that may be the case. Lock them in a room and take away their coffee !! https://t.co/klrbKaYmq3
Obviously the is committed to growth and change, but my f2f PLN resists change and that may be why PD is hard to encourage?
Hoping the new job is going well!
Great to collaborate w/ & his faculty. So much we can learn by connecting through Twitter. https://t.co/qK3dHsM41c
Recentlly my school was invited by to participate in an edchat between schools in diff parts of the state. Great PD!
my bestie has done something similar for the past10 years called SASSY.. Great T involvement, rotate rooms https://t.co/F6cpm6Zh6H
Oh, and I got the idea from at !
Hopefully. I think choice is important but I think that people don't know what they don't know. How to address?
We did have great PD on accountable talk, that actually modeled an accountable talk lesson. Much more effective than "lecture" PD
yeh. I now get ideas from interstate and overseas. such a diverse resource
had a few district edcamp style faculty meetings. Trying to get more conversations than presentations tho
A little slow so far, but about 20 Ts/admins have joined in!
Hey kiddos, the convo continues at Spark chat on Voxer
Get to work on that for us! lol :)
Still figuring out scheduling tweets and buffer. Sorry for the onslaught didn't know it would work and also double.
That's what I'm thinking!!
maybe I had better start documenting hours
Best PD offers a new perspective ... an inspiration ... if your PD didn't excite teachers to try then was it a good PD session?
When we do edcamp-style w/staff-led sessions, admins also join not only the sessions but leading one, too
Well, it's also in how it gets framed. They should be asked what types of PD opportunities they need. Then suggest/design!
I throw a lot of stuff at them. I allow Ts to pick&choose what works for them. We have a good culture of trying new things
Providing leadership opportunities so important to growth and buy-in! https://t.co/ml82fX1JgO
Sometimes you just have to offer PD on your own ... and I do help sessions ... teachers helping teachers
Careful, I nearly spit out my coffee reading this! You are on fire this morning! Hope your energy lasts all day!
Thank you so much everyone. Starting the day with a smile once again.
I find them online through out the week. Save them to Diigo & and they do the rest
Great question. Our Differentiation PLC for example tweeted out big themes from Dr. Tomlinson.
this is a fabulous group!
Thanks everyone! Have a great day
Wishing you a dayof joyful surprises.
yea you should see the crash and burn around 4:30 !!!!!!! https://t.co/aCEk6j6rbN
Careful, I nearly spit out my coffee reading this! You are on fire this morning! Hope your energy lasts all day!
Mindset matters. If T is determined to glean info to impact practice,T will find it.If T is sure nothing will be learned,T is right.
Looking forward to Indiana's 1st this Saturday in a school district I've never visited before. https://t.co/frBslbKlxH
Most important to model/practice what we preach in PD, if it's and then we should do the same when we present for Ts
yes, and sometimes just have to brave enough to step into the role ... see a need ... fill a need
I like to f/u immediately and a few weeks later.
Next, they'll select a book study on differentiation and meet biweekly. This PLC becomes ambassadors.
Yes. the goal is not to promote a session, but to motivate a
Ts need to be invited to work from bottom up. Seek PD opportunities, teacher workgroups to solve real problems
yes also makes it so much more collaborative https://t.co/V3YON43tbY
When we do edcamp-style w/staff-led sessions, admins also join not only the sessions but leading one, too
Agreed! We only have about 55 schools, but we've gone mainly school/classroom-based collaborative inquiry.
I wonder if some just need that one great PD session (of their choice) to change their mind about what it can be
Thanks for a great first BF club! Loved the convo 😊
I also use to do this! Great idea!
Go forth and enhance the day?
Anyone want to be added to voxer chat?
Finally, they'll lead an all faculty PD to share with everyone. We're doing same w/ Visible Thinking.
They can be shown what they need. Tell what you see. Then ask them what they need from you. The change you seek w/ come!
Thanks for another great chat. Off to start my day and get in as many steps as possible.
. Improves overall mutual respect, communication, and morale/culture.
I encourage my colleagues to participate in PD that matters by connecting w/ others on thru groups like
Bye ! Have a great Tuesday!
Sometimes a session is chosen based on schedule but learning should still be the goal! https://t.co/mkK0YbeNHI
Yes. the goal is not to promote a session, but to motivate a
Our district is hmm, medium sized? IMO they do a knock-out job with PD, especially for Arts Ed
I seek Ts out. I ask the ups and downs. The later f/u is to see if they've implemented and if not what the hurdles are.
RT https://t.co/HbKpULio5a Thanks for another great chat. Off to start my day and get in as many steps as possible. …
Thanks for another great chat. Off to start my day and get in as many steps as possible.
go to hashtag, just click and there are links to many that others have made that are free to use.
I think is right. EdCamp model is good way to get Ts believing in value of PD, but follow up after https://t.co/dWFNMjiBzu
Ts need to be invited to work from bottom up. Seek PD opportunities, teacher workgroups to solve real problems
TY 4 another stimulating chat. Gotta feed the dogs, get son out of bed and have BF. See y'all tomorrow. Have a
This is fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
I mean have a . LOL! Freudian slip? Hahaha!
offers semester courses online for 12 weeks. You'll want a team of 3-6. It's more cost effective.
The chats always leave me feeling like I can change the world, you know, the reason I became a teacher in the first place!
Thanks! Let me know if you want support in trying this yourself!
Let's be honest, many teachers will not try something new unless they are pushed/pulled ... excuse "no time"
Thanks Great chat as always - Love hearing what you all are up to
Don't forget to post your blog at .
