Good Morning my fellow early risers
I really happy about this question.
Goodmorning ! Jessica Gake, instructional designer from KY and former MS teacher (choir and technology)

The Q https://t.co/C5SWvOpogH
Happy Monday ! Today's question: We are said to live in an "age of distraction". How do you promote student engagement?
Good morning ! Stacey from NJ.
Ill go with the easy answer: if you don't make content relevant, why bother teaching it?
Good Monday morning friends! Where did the weekend go?
Good morning . Love the question today!
Work harder than ever to present material with lots of movement, S interaction, and peer discussions https://t.co/I0k5emTWq4
Happy Monday ! Today's question: We are said to live in an "age of distraction". How do you promote student engagement?
Congratulations to her and you Carl! https://t.co/gdXEvnsA6D
Hi
Tomorrow is my daughter last day of high school ever. (before final exams)
Love this Q! Not doing traditional classes...instead doing full : Co-taught, cross-grade teams, competency framework. Love it!
Great question! I think the reason for distractions can help provide great engagement if embraced.
same here- 2 PD days, a few after school appointments and a family weekend out of town- crazy busy!
Good morning .
Brian, HS principal from Massachusetts.
Good morning and welcome to ! Best PLC around! https://t.co/uXBAUaCWHL
Goodmorning ! Jessica Gake, instructional designer from KY and former MS teacher (choir and technology)
Good morning Tracy from MA happy to be here today
Agreed. this is what pedagogy means today.
Good morning, looks like is going to be a busy week for me, ready for the challenges
So many great tools & resources it can be overwhelming. But it can also provide options for Ts and Ss which can help engage.
This questions is the reason we need actual human beings as teachers. It is not enough to just deliver content.
Agreed. And if you wouldn't want to be a Ss in your own classroom, then you've already set the bar too low for your kids.
I'm sorry what were you asking?
Good morning, . Jennifer in NC. We are organizing today to welcome students back tomorrow after full week out due to storm aftermath
Michelle grade 1-2 from Ontario. Finished my first 5k charity race with my husband and son… https://t.co/yywNIJgHtd
GM make room for peer opinions, refer back to essential question, tight timeline with a breather or reward built in the end
I would love to hear more about your model of instruction. I want to bring more PBL to my school
My Motivating Students-Engagement page https://t.co/T5EtJBWTd4 Find student interests & start from where they are at.
Student engagement in early childhood revolves around interactions as well as content!
Cant allow tech to be the only way we reach out to our students. Sometimes good old fashion discussion is more authentic
Good morning! Look for my blog later today for how our teachers promoted teen reading!
good morning! I hope it wasn't too bad where you are.
agree, especially not traditional, students get bored, they want hands on activities
Happy Monday 🤗 Caiti from Canada 🇨🇦 great to be back!!
Awesome! I'll be there! Can't wait to hear everyone's ideas!
Provide rich lessons with short breaks, make content relevant, be unignorable, know Ss limits & interests https://t.co/7ms98nW4Fz
Happy Monday ! Today's question: We are said to live in an "age of distraction". How do you promote student engagement?
Adult or student, if we are to engage others we must make our lesson relevant to them
Hi - checking in from my bike this morning. To answer the question, you got to make it relevant at the very least.
I think showing Ss a passion for learning
One key to effective engagement is a carefully designed seating plan created after getting to know your students well.
Student engagement has much to do with choice, voice, effective use of tech, play and collaboration.
Good question. https://t.co/6sneCD0jKm
Happy Monday ! Today's question: We are said to live in an "age of distraction". How do you promote student engagement?
Good morning ! AJ, elemed, central NJ.
Good morning ! I'd say I try to have my teaching practices/style mimic those of the "distractions"
More and more student led learning opportunities.
We are 90-min blocks. Keep them moving& thinking. Chunk it. Embrace the disruptions. Ss need how to deal with them.
I love reading to my students! They fall in love with books just as much as me 😍
I flat out say "If your eyes aren't on me, I don't know if you're listening". I'm not a psychic so I can't really tell
Prioritized relationship building w/in a school will help lay the foundation for classroom engagement. One connection benefits many.
Love to pose a question and have teams/partners/groups discuss, act out, answer. When only 1 S answers, often Q is lost on others.
I see the need for teachers to make the content relevant and applicable so students are doing more than sitting
Agreed! If we don't have a passion for it, how do we expect our students to have passion!
I think in HS we forget to utilize discussion as a tool to aide learning.
Great chat! Gotta walk the pooch. see you tomorrow morning at 5:30am! Have a perfect day! MORE >> https://t.co/vy60INL1pQ
teacher stage presence is essential .
Movement is key in first grade:)
Not enough. That much I can tell you. Not. Enough. https://t.co/zzwl5yC0oW
Happy Monday ! Today's question: We are said to live in an "age of distraction". How do you promote student engagement?
Pretty freaked out but she still has her exams which she is stressed about. Tomorrow is a special assembly
I try to make my lessons exciting. Make them "drink the kool-aid" that school is the best place to be.
thats a thing we tend not to admit but its true.
great, I'll check into that
Sure thing! Here's a bit about my school...https://t.co/VIR27OioDk Feel free to DM me for follow-up Qs. Or visit! :)
Give difft options for showing learning - some like tech, others like hands projects, others like writing. Choice and voice
Good Morning ! Gotta self-promote here. My book Instant Relevance USES distractions and external connections… https://t.co/XDqwDaRHrf
And using interactive lessons such as to spark engagement 👍🏻
Best wishes for a great re-launch! https://t.co/OQVjcmCdbB
Good morning, . Jennifer in NC. We are organizing today to welcome students back tomorrow after full week out due to storm aftermath
This pic was perfect for us:)
is now trending in USA, ranking 20
Be present. Look each child in the eye, listen and be present.
Wow! Best wishes with that. I remember what it was like after Sandy up here in NJ
Also encouraging problem-solving and peer discussion
Hello Diane! Welcome to a new week!
She still has exams. they determine Uni place ranking (ATAR score)
Interest is key. Student choice helps with this. If the material isn't all that interesting, the activity could be.
by establishing relationships with the Ss as individuals. Help their buy in
Valuing the S as a human. Relationships. Too much lip service for that. More action.
Good morning! Bonnie from CT checking in while I walk my dog this beautiful morning
Exactly! We tell Ss that if we can't connect to something in the real world they care about, we don't teach it.
That's perfect, Cleutus! Hope you are well:)
Works in the lower grades!
so agree with you especially on the importance of play. Does not matter age of the student, play is vital
Jumping in. Dr appts this am, mtg w the sup this afternoon, BOE mtg, tech showcase Thurs pm, + shadowing Ss
By collaborating with students to come up with tasks
tweeting from your bike? I'm impressed!
and student creation too. What will they create?
You are truly a model of 'how to engage' for all of us!
Goooood MORNING, ! I'm excited to talk with parents this week about their children during confs.
Hands-on, group work. Student voice & choice. Working on making it more relevant.
Talking up the material, the goal, the student, the group and the usefulness of the skill for the future helps while teaching it
Great, although the weekend felt a little short. How are things up there?
A little sore but had a blast. I was on a team supporting a student in my class who has Hunter's syndrome. MPS 2
I like that- choice and voice https://t.co/5wDggFmTaY
Give difft options for showing learning - some like tech, others like hands projects, others like writing. Choice and voice
Choice within topics promotes respect of students and engagement in the material.
We use peardeck for a distance learning course. Does it work pretty well in person? What sort of devices do you use?
I use strategies. Call on students randomly and mid-paragraph when reading as a class. That's just one idea.
Have a student driven mind set, not content driven. If you have student's attention, content will follow, the other way, not so sure
Same to you! I hope your week goes smoothly
as always, if I can't tell them why I am teaching something, I don't
So the nitty gritty of this is to plan with the audience in mind. Consider the kids at every level.
This! https://t.co/zewceYpB55
Student engagement has much to do with choice, voice, effective use of tech, play and collaboration.
3 things: Make it relevant, make it interesting a& embrace the distractions & use them to ur advantage! They r not going anywhere
tech showcase? Tell me more?
Ok. so we have a little support group here.
absolutely, referring back to the essential question is powerful, Ss take ownership of their learning
We made a neighborhood recently. They loved it. I have more boxes to take in today.
Good luck. Hope that everyone is ok.
By making the delivery and content relevant. https://t.co/K6Gwdk2yVH
Happy Monday ! Today's question: We are said to live in an "age of distraction". How do you promote student engagement?
#2413 The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall. — Che Guevara
https://t.co/e6xVKkyWcM
Practical tool: I provide for Ss to listen to help tamp down distracting noises during independent work. They love it.
it works amazing! We have the Ss use Chromebooks, but it works just as well on phones and iPads!
Do not "I don't know" stand as the final answer. Follw up, have another student explain, have 1st student restate. So
Shouting out the kids who lead the trail of distraction before their energy becomes contagious
Ditch the worksheets and the lessons of the past and get the students up and moving. Hands-on and creative lessons are key.
Lucky in Clayton but Smithfield saw flooding & southern areas saw wiped out roads. Getting back will be good for all!
Have you seen a change in level of S engagement? Difficult for T to implement? https://t.co/3wA1fJgdYV
Love this Q! Not doing traditional classes...instead doing full : Co-taught, cross-grade teams, competency framework. Love it!
Sounds like a great read! I’ll definitely look into it! Thanks!
agree, in my History classes all assessments & assignment revolve around the essential questions https://t.co/6Vsd2aJAde
absolutely, referring back to the essential question is powerful, Ss take ownership of their learning
"do not let anyone take away your learning. Participate" Said by me over and over again in class.
Thanks! We chat about relevance every week on Weds, 9:30 pm est for 30 min at Join in!
Love this! Ss need to know we care about them and their learning. https://t.co/HZ7np8US7d
Be present. Look each child in the eye, listen and be present.
You need to have passion for your content! Take it if you have to... Your Ss feed off of your energy.
I'm sure it will be. We all know how much kids need that routine and those connections they have at school.
good to know! Sometimes it's important to remember everyone else takes too much from the "all the things" buffet
engineerteacher I would love to hear more about your model of instruction. I want to bring more PBL to my school
Will do! Working on a blog now that I hope to get into EdWeek Teacher this fall.
Ss moving around with a cut up worksheet asking each other questions is much more engaging than each S filling out the worksheet.
thank you. We are used to hurricanes but this time it was much different
so true, if we don't have the passion, you can't get Ss trust
good morning - Marifran, hs librarian from NY, catching up on the last few minutes' posts after an early morning dog walk
If you don't love your Ss, they will know. They will never perform as much as they could.
I like that, that's what it gives the meaning, real life experiences
I'm interested as well. Good to talk w/someone who has made the shift.
agreed! when possible, give Ss choices in their learning! Answer the “why” and then provide options to meet objectives.
My promising to "drop the Mic" when we have reached our daily goal helps them focus and keeps them on track when we are done we done
I took away some mobile phones from class today - talking about taking away distractions
. Reply: Identify distraction, relate, if possible utilize positively Ask ?s: Why are primate experiments limited to Kenya?
yes! Show them their ideas and thoughts are important!!
Wish you lived closer. Would love to your school in action.
Ss are presenting/sharing their projects/work created in the 1:1 setting.
Age of distraction is a mischaracterization. We just haven't yet learned how to incorporate it all.
Is it too simple to say get out from behind the desk?
Thanks. Looking forward to seeing my kids get off their buses 🚌🚌 tomorrow
Yes! I'll be checking in.
yeah Ts need to understand Ss need to know purpose, where are they going

Year 10. Texting while they should have been doing maths
yes. it makes a big difference
good morning, Denis. I didn't even see this post until after I posted my own comment about relevance.
Start with rich questions but no matter what you do with 6 year olds eventually you get.... https://t.co/WLqu2zlZZi
That's an interesting thought. Have to chew on that one. Thanks for sharing
like parenting, please don't say "because I Said so !! "
All this time, I thought you taught young ones.
sounds like the kind of projects others would love to watch in the future!
Awesome! Might be something we look into more. Thanks!
All great ways to provide engagement! https://t.co/sbJSch3wO6
Hands-on, group work. Student voice & choice. Working on making it more relevant.
I've started teaching my Ss about . Can help them stay engaged when they need to hear something (& helps w/memory).
No. I am still completely surprised at how many still do this! Maybe we should get those Ts a fitbit!
thanks. always consider that you arent on solid ground when thinking about a problem.
I teach Year 8, 10 and 12
Glad u guys r getting back to a sense of normalcy at least. Hopefully normal is around the corner
Love bottle flipping in class! Used it last week to review subtraction - using again today! https://t.co/ztzFObiEtQ
Truth is we all need it:)
Nope! That's a great start! 😉
I completely agree! Ts need to respect their Ss needs & be aware of their Ss so they can utilize strengths
Lol!! Thanks for the morning laugh
Listen to students. They can tell you so much about the best way to engage them.
That's a solid first step.
Listening is key to engagement!
Agreed. And it quickly changes and adds to itself constantly.
Movement and peer discussions should be embedded in lessons. Worksheets do not create life long learners. https://t.co/BA81EBLHzT
Ditch the worksheets and the lessons of the past and get the students up and moving. Hands-on and creative lessons are key.
thx 4the kind words. Certainly has been a year of growth. Difficult &challenging but positive growth. Good 2b back!
These chats are so dang fast! I'm hate to think of what I miss each week
Ah, but isn't it the best place to be?
Whoops, and always make sure people spell "follow" correctly.
https://t.co/iI415DY12L
Do not "I don't know" stand as the final answer. Follw up, have another student explain, have 1st student restate. So
Questioning is so important and a skill that I feel new teachers don't discuss.
Thanks! I will try to join sometime!
Have a great day everyone. I'm starting my day thinking positive... hoping my ride home feels the same tonight🙏
Awesome! Engage students where they're already passionate!
Agreed. The more relevance, engagement and meaningful movement the fewer behaviors I see.
Bottle flipping is all fun and games until a kid who forgets to tighten up the cap LOL
Monday Monday Michala! Glad sheet mader it https://t.co/wlanMioToI
Popping in late...HS daughter having a Monday. She forgot to set her alarm so it's been a race but she made the bus....
Explicitly teaching self regulation is key too-turn responsibility of the majority of the learned over to the students.
Have a great day! Thanks again for the ideas, lots to check out today.mMonday is calling, I need to answer with some coffee!
Modeling intent and deliberate action: focus on a single act, convo, purpose and actively avoid distraction
Relevance is key! "Who cares. We won't ever use this in real life." Don't let those be true! https://t.co/cZgZZYYzdF
By making the delivery and content relevant. https://t.co/K6Gwdk2yVH
Happy Monday ! Today's question: We are said to live in an "age of distraction". How do you promote student engagement?
the whole rigor moment was just insulting.
I have seen some pretty awesome projects in the past few years. I'll report back after Thursday.
'Purpose' makes for meaningful, relevant learning! Agreed!
Good morning, . I'm Ku, Learning Coach, Argentina. Trying to get back into the swing of things after a week off.
Morning ! Melissa, 3rd grade teacher CT -- jumping on late after a bad night sleep but ready to rock & roll!
exactly, if you don't ask the right question ( & follow up)you don't get the right answers & discussion https://t.co/dAc9EJ3bTc
Questioning is so important and a skill that I feel new teachers don't discuss.
Have an outstanding Monday friends!
We had that happen! I provided the bottles and was prepped for this eventuality. Worth the engagement. https://t.co/bwZUCKTkrS
Bottle flipping is all fun and games until a kid who forgets to tighten up the cap LOL
No! Not too simple! Such a temptation for Ts but so important for engagement to be up and interacting with Ss.
or the same chair the Ss use 😀

Thanks for the great ideas for engagement this morning . Remember to !
Use the "find the match to this" index card trick. Gets the out of their seats for a few minutes. https://t.co/sLaAsW8HnQ
Ss moving around with a cut up worksheet asking each other questions is much more engaging than each S filling out the worksheet.
It's asking yourself if you would want to be in your own class. Knowing that connecting is purposeful & balanced
Thanks for a great chat about relevance this morning! Have a great day all!
Thank you. Getting back to school will be a big part of that "normal"
Start small w/ a group of Ts that are passionate to make the change. Build w/ grit from there doing true (per ).
Hope you have a great day! 🌝⬅️has given me grief this weekend!
It was not easy...but it was way, way worth it! Changes everything!
Gotta run gang. Today we are inquiring all about 🎃. We have 4 to measure, weigh, draw, gut, estimate &a count seeds
I think the best way to keep S engagement is finding ways to hook them with what they are interested in
Now that's engaging! https://t.co/kt08vdlTv9

Hi, Steve & . All quiet on the southwestern front.
true that,, tech can be the way to introduce the information that promotes class discussion & interaction https://t.co/diLYfTgdjK
Cant allow tech to be the only way we reach out to our students. Sometimes good old fashion discussion is more authentic
