Innovation ... such a buzz worthy word ... it is really in the eye of the beholder. Not all tech is innovative ... some innovation is just hype #edchat

In my SPED classroom, we use adaptive technology for our students but also low-tech solutions to meet IEP goals and Objectives. We spend a great deal of time teaching parents how to meet student needs. #edchat
Hi Shawn! I'm Karisa, a 6th grade California teacher. We are encouraged to innovate at my charter. Some of my favs: flexible seating, collaborative learning, student-led conferences, GAFE, genius hour. . . #Innovation keeps learning fresh for us and our students. #EDUT501Aguda
many will think the #starbucksclassroom is innovative ... but seriously, they're just chairs ... my kids enjoyed learning in my class with crappy desks long before the Green Dragon classroom was born. #edchat
Well we can use Dash and Dot and teach students how to use coding:) and we are also able to use @TeachLivE and practice different scenarios! We have access to iPads and use different apps to enchanted or own learning and teaching #edchat#SSEDMETHODS
Tablets and Smartphones, go a long way to help the communication needs of students with Special Needs, many apps exist to make everyday living easier for them. #edchat
@PrincipalKafele inspired me so much at last week’s #MEAForum2018 that I immediately ordered The Teacher 50 and Closing the Attitude Gap after he finished speaking. Very excited to start these, thank you for all you do to inspire educators across America! #edchat
Education is the only "industry" I've ever worked.
My question is, are we the only field where burnout is such a discussed topic? Do other professions have to deal w/ burnout, or is it only a topic within #education?
#edchat#leadupchat#EduGladiators
Was at a great meeting of museum educators today, and one of them said, "Don't focus so much on innovation. Focus on what works." A good idea is a good idea regardless of how innovative it is. #edchat#RISE2018

This year, we took a skills-based approach with our #english students. Using a knowledge building framework, the Gr. 9 #geniushour projects were 100% free inquiry and cross-curricular. Engagement was fantastic, and students select topics we never even anticipated. #edchat
Innovation is easy to see, identify, create in a sector as sloooow-changing as education. Coteaching was innovative 15 years ago YET no matter how successful a practice it is it is not common place yet. #edchat
#edchat My 4th grade team just did a zoo project with area and perimeter. We turned our rooms into construction zones with barriers, street signs, emergency flashers, etc. The kids had to wear hard hats and badges in order to be "admitted" to the area.
These digital learning strategies don’t require the teacher to be an expert in their function; they only require a willingness to let the students try some new ways of doing things. https://t.co/a6XsNECqH1#education#edchat
We feel fortunate to work in a school that allows for organic change in curricula. The humanities put together a social justice unit w/ 6th graders to produce poetry slam and video on topics: LGBT, modern slavery, indigenous rights, & statelessness. #edchat#socialjustice

I am not sure it has a universally accepted definition in education amongst educators, but it is the buzzword leading many education discussions. #Edchat

I dig 3D printing, we have them ... unfortunately it is a piece of technology that is too slow for all kids to use. 5 hours to print a block ...students create the digital file then have to stand in line for days to print ... #edchat

That is great! We've done some non-traditional projects and ideas. It has been very hard for my Ss who have been structured and worksheeted to death for 9-11 years of schooling to have freedoms- a work in progress #edchat
We started using this learning model in January (in our freshmen English classes) and it has paid off HUGE. Give this strategy a go! Thanks @Catlin_Tucker for making so much info available. Already looking at how to take this to the next level in 2018-19. #edchat
If folks get all their news off algorithms on their phone, "it's just reinforcing whatever biases you have, which is the pattern that develops (B.Obama, 2017)." Please read my blog at https://t.co/NDCPoWO9GE#edchat#KidsDeserveIt#education#k12
Well said. Furthermore, innovating involves creating new methods. Many teachers are using new methods and not actually creating them. Being innovative is different than using innovation. It’s like saying someone is innovative for using the new iPhone. #edchat
Innovation. . . we are all on our own continuum when it comes to innovation in our classrooms. We are just like our students in that teachers are learners and can learn from each other as well. Innovation looks different for every teacher. #edchat
Honestly, I think that is what I have done ... Ed is very political and they are not really paying attention to what is happening in classrooms. focused on district outcomes #edchat I will focus on making the best possible learning opportunities for my kids
Innovation ... such a buzz worthy word ... it is really in the eye of the beholder. Not all tech is innovative ... some innovation is just hype #edchat
Here’s what we know doesn’t work. Large classes, survey classes, student tracking, no vocational classes, lower money spent per pupil, gobs of homework given each night. Yet these practices still persist. Letting go is the first step to progress. #edchat
I don't know if you would consider this "inspiring", but my college professor had us make our own @geniushour projects and it was super rewarding :) #edchat
Technology in education is not the innovation we should recognize. What we do with that tech and how we use it for learning is innovative and ever-evolving to remain relevant. #Edchat
We've noticed that sometimes Ss resist the push to think differently about things. They're to use to organized play, structured directions, and worksheets. #edchat
Our spring fling is ready to roll!! @Leighton_beth and I are personalizing learning by giving teachers voice and choice! Use @padlet and it's voting feature to revolutionize your PD!

#Edchat yeah. It feels fluffy. Get/allow kids to create something meaningful to themselves be it art, writing, a poem whatever and perhaps wrestle with some dissonance. The end. I’m not quite sure why we continue to latch onto words.
We've added a "file upload" evidence type to @BadgeList.
The file upload feature allows you to upload files of *any type* as evidence for #openbadges!
This is a feature of any org level group and allows for a more effective tracking of learning experiences. #edtech#edchat

I started teaching over thirty years ago. I've had a computer in my classroom since the year I started. Is using a computer still considered an innovation? #Edchat

We must adapt to the needs of our students in order to differentiate the instruction for them. The use of tech can help with this, but only if we have a clear plan on how it is to be used. #edchat
We've adjusted our classes to accommodate more choice in learning options. It doesn't mean content lacks, but it provides Ss w/ options for demonstrating their understanding. #edchat
I hear you! Some just look at me like: "Tell me what you want me to do. . ." 🤣 It might take a week or two for them to choose a topic and a lot of coaxing ala "What do you love?" "How do you spend your free time?" "What do you wish you could learn about?" #edchat#EDUT501Aguda
The collaborative nature of using Google applications has changed the Ss interaction with each other. They think nothing of setting up a "G-doc" to share their information. #edchat
I'm not against rubrics per se, but my students consistently dislike the holistic #bced 6-point scale. As a result, I try to use exemplars and, for writing, analytic rubrics that offer more specific feedback: https://t.co/lUGuvp64Lm@stampingout#edchat#bcedchat

I still think it's considered innovation. Technology is always changing and improving. New programs are coming out that are beneficial to students and teachers alike. #edchat
All the furniture is gone, and the kids had to "jump" in to space through my back door using the mini trampoline. I had a "spooky sounds" @SoundCloud playlist created by @NASA playing the whole time, too! #Edchat

In education there are innovations and INNOVATIONS! The former are common and low impact, the later are rare but revolutionary. What are examples f the former and later in your school? District? #edchat
At @TheParkSchool, 8th graders choose a social issue that they’re passionate about and spend the year researching, talking to experts, and devising responses. It’s exciting- so many purposeful, student-designed field trips have resulted, esp. to our state legislature. #edchat
Yes! I also gave the kids name tags saying "Astronaut". One of my Ss who only comes Tuesdays and Thursdays kept his name tag for the next time he came to me! Had a background story that "NASA needs our help!" #Edchat
Aside from teaching, invocation in data collection, using smart devices, google forms, and apps on tablets has been great to help document and collect data on the effectiveness of Evidence Based Practices. #edchat
In fact, #edtech can become a gimmick - just something we have that kids "like". Innovation comes when we use it to elevate engagement, but using it without a clear purpose (i.e. when it is connected to learning) is wasted time. #edchat
I think building the foundation for a great summer reading program is important. See how it could help your students. https://t.co/pARbyl7Suc#edchat#literacy
My 7th science class got a grant to build garden boxes for Life science exploration. My 8th grade got grant to build a structure with multiple forces on and below it for direct experience with physical science. Not going to hit ALL standards this year. Innovative ed? #edchat

Cultural diffusion has changed the classroom. It's no longer an exchange of ideas based on trade, migration, and war. It's technology and social sharing. Tapping into that allows Ss to feel empowered to contribute. That's INNOVATIVE! #edchat

generally, the research shows more variance between classroom in the same school building than variance across schools... lots of Ts doing their own thing, not many doing the same thing. #edchat
Heaton’s Highlights! Enjoyed watching students discuss and debate texts in 5th grade, enjoyed watching students learn to read via Orton Gillingham, & watch 6th graders analyze & make text inferences! #edchat#instruction#kyadmin#mcisrocks
But is that such a bad thing? I think it helps keeps the kids engaged and fresh over years and day when they get new experiences from different Ts #EdChat

Definitely innovative to mix physics with gardening (not to mention physical education with a lot of hard work)! So much real-life learning to be had outside. Good luck! #edchat#EDUT501Aguda
I suspect most school cultures aren’t risk taking environments. Aversion to risk, fear and status quo are all ideas that paralyze creativity. It’s easier to put your head down and be quiet. #Edchat
...depends. If seeking overall gains in learning and teaching then consistency of good practice would be a necessary variable for attaining scale. #EdChat

Actually I have seen more teachers just stick to what they know and keep “covering all of the content” as their main goal. WHY?!!! We teach children not content. Leaves no room for exploration and questioning. #edchat
When teachers communicate, innovation happens. SPED teachers can bring a lot to the General Education environment for students not being serviced on IEP's #edchat
Do you think this is because they are so worn down from the system that they are focused on the standards instead of kids? I'd like to hope so. #Edchat

#edchat Magic....what a great description. This is so out of the box for the kids that they don't realize they are learning and doing the work themselves! #nothingbetter
Of course it’s fear-based planning. Chaos and messy lessons are scary for many. They think if they have failures in class it could lead to kids getting out of control. #edchat THEN they get upset when kids zone out, talk out, and walk out. Not a surprise.
my most "memorable" innovation ... when I bring in my power tools and let the kids use them in conjunction with a project. So many kids 1st experience with power tools came in my social studies class. #edchat great memories.
I love how @gcouros uses the image that comedian Demetri Martin for what “success” really looks and applies it to learning. This is why I think we get stymied with innovation because it's messier than the traditional learning many of us grew up with #edchat

Like I tell my GOTR girls, it's okay to make mistakes and jump out of that comfort zone, it's not going anywhere, but neither will you if you don't take a leap of faith. Be brave, try a new lesson plan, if it flops, it flops. Reflect from that and move on (: #edchat#SSEDMETHODS

#Edchat I empathize with today’s admin. They have to lead, teach, administrate and try to build culture in an atmosphere where people don’t feel valued/secure. All while getting pressure from above to make change.
That's really awesome! I'm sure students benefit from being able to have a creative work space. How does the Makerspace room work in your school? #edchat
