Welcome to tonight's #DitchBook chat!
We'll be talking about some of the most POPULAR #DitchSummit presentations of all time!
For now, let's check in:
- Name
- Role

- Fave #DitchSummit session (if you have one ... if not, no worries!)
Hey there, #DitchBook friends!
Matt here, author/blogger/speaker, 10+yr HS Spanish teacher.
Coming off a fun Christmas (see the Miller gang in this photo!).
Fave #DitchSummit session? They're like my kids. I can't pick one! :)
Hi #ditchbook friends!!!! Karly, tech tosa and computer science teacher from Concord, CA. My favorite #ditchsummit presentation is a tie between my favorite #HyperDocs gals and the incredible @ClaudioZavalaJr this year.
Hey #ditchbook! Evan Mosier, Technology Integrationist and 7th grade LA teacher from Davenport, IA . Fave #ditchsummit presentation has been @tonyvincent and Google Drawings knowledge!
Hello! This is Schies from Pa. I teach 6th grade math and my favorite presentation so far was @kimbearden because I love everything about her school and I desperately want to visit it some day!! #DitchBook
Hey #DitchBook! Evan Mosier, Technology Integrationist and 7th grade LA teacher from Davenport, IA . Fave #ditchsummit presentation has been @tonyvincent and Google Drawings knowledge!
A1. Create experiences for Ss- when we do our PBIS bus lesson Ss create the bus outside. When we studied colonial American we made passports and went back in time. #ditchbook
A1 #ditchbook#ditchsummit . It seems stupid and obvious but beginning with the end in mind -- and making sure what we are making our students do is REAL and has a clear purpose with make it matter to them. Connecting it to something that matters
A1: As much as we may or may not like to, teachers need to step out of our comfort zones, which I am admittedly not very good at. If students see us taking risks, they will be more engaged and know that it's OK for them to take them as well. #DitchBook
A1: Use a relevant "hook." Empower Ss with choice and voice. Offer PBL activities and kill 2 birds w one stone for Graduation Pathways. 😉 Allow Ss to give ideas. Choose best ones that work for your classroom. #DitchBook
A1: Creating an experience can be something big like @burgessdave's "life changing lesson."
But it can be small, too. A trip to the art hallway with "hors d'oeuvres" (little cups of fruit punch) makes for an experience, too!
#DitchBook
I have this FANTASTIC idea! I think it would be AMAZING if you two did a mystery skype. I mean, you both teacher 5th grade, and know me, so it's a win-win right?! You should make it happen!! #DitchBook
A1 Experiences are created in the little things we do. Tap into their imagination and it’s easy! Be a kid yourself! That’s what I try to do anyway. #DitchBook
A1: I think part of it is putting Ss in the center of what you’re teaching to truly give them the experience. Let them figure things out, watch videos, connect it to real life... so many options! #DitchBook
A1) Taking students to far off lands in your own room, allowing them to play a role or take on a career, or even taking them somewhereafter learning about something #DitchBook
A1: We need to make our classes welcoming so that students want to invest in the culture, If they feel that they can own a piece of it and make it their own, then they will engage more readily. #staywoke#ditchbook#ThursdayThoughts
A2: Pedagogy is just the craft of teaching effectively / well.
Finding a powerful framework (depth of knowledge, understanding by design, etc.) and using it to make small improvements can be a great first step! #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A2. Activities need 2b tailored 2 Ss sitting in front of U that day, not yesterday, last year, or ten years ago. Scary but have 2 let go & give Ss choice of tools that suit their needs in that given moment. Might be graph paper, scrap paper, colored paper, or digital. #ditchbook
A2: It has to start with the students! Not every class is going to be the same, so we need to ensure we are consistent in our expectations, but variant on how we present it, whether it's with technology or without. #DitchBook
A2 #ditchbook#ditchsummit Not allowing myself to get too swept up in all the pretty things -- sure making things look like we are inside a space shuttle is exciting, but WHAT AM I TEACHING or more accurately what am I giving my students the freedom to learn
A1: Allow students to come up with ideas for learning. Facilitate learning outside of the classroom: playground, hall, cafe, etc. allow community visitors and parents to be part of lessons. #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A2) I think it is equal parts hype and hook with a lesson and equal part student led or focused. Students love leading and need more opportunities to work in a way that they will in the real world solving problems taking on projects both independently and in groups #DitchBook
A2 Sound Pedagogy is in the planning and the presentation. You gotta be good at both. Strategy based has always worked well for me or if I have had a chance to collaborate with someone who has done something similar before...that helps BIG TIME!#ditchbook
A1: An experience doesn't have to be different content, instead it's just packaging it in a different way. Each year we climb up Mt. Everest. They are just reading a whole class novel, but the frame of an Everest campsite makes the difference. https://t.co/cpl4OCxJfD#ditchbook
Q3: Based on @strobeled's "The Science of Happiness" session ...
How can we help ourselves be happier -- and apply happiness to our classrooms?
#DitchBook#DitchSummit
A3. It is all about balance and taking care of you too and modeling that. If we are not happy Ss sense it. Some days it's hard as we have life too. Yoga, live music, traveling, and connecting to my PLN all make me happy #ditchbook

Comin’ in hot at 18 min late
Becky Simon from Vero Beach, FL
I teach first grade, adore potential, love failure, esteem productive struggle and believe that love and just going to the game can change lives! #DitchBook
I also think that as teachers we need to love LEARNING, DISCOVERY, EXPLORATION and even STRUGGLE #ditchbook#ditchsummit We can't expect them to believe it is a worthwhile part of life - if we don't believe it
A2: Bu being a lifelong learner in order to continuously improve on our pedagogy. By gaining a relationship with Ss to understand how to facilitate learning for them. By communicating with other educators to learn from them. #DitchBook#DitchSummit
A3: Ever since I watched Kim the first time, I almost always meet my goal to leave work by 4:00. I've been so much more productive and I feel more relaxed too! #ditchbook
A3 I think we have to find balance. Too much of anything can be a bad thing. I think we also need to find the positive in each day no matter how awful it seemed. Even if we have to write them down. #DitchBook
A3: Take some time for yourself! It isn’t always easy, but it’s so important. The happier you are as the T in the room, the happier we can make our Ss. Give them a little down time and options throughout the day to make them happy, too! #DitchBook
A2 Pedagogy is just a fancy word for teachin’ what we teach. My goal is to get a PhD in my Ss, to know what makes them tick, how they operate and to find out HOW they are smart so I can teach to their strengths using my own. It’s loving them enough to find the key!
#DitchBook
A2: I think a lot of it is about constantly reflecting back on my learning objectives and making sure everything is enhancing that. I've been trying to cut out a lot of the time wasters that don't help us reach our goals. #ditchbook
A3: I've seen anecdotal evidence in my classroom that supports Shawn Achor's findings ...
People who are happy are 31 percent more productive.
There's something to this happiness stuff! #DitchBook
#ditchsummit#ditchbook . Man, I need to work on balance, but so much of what I enjoy is learning MORE about education. I have started drawing though, and even though I am lowkey terrible -- it brings me joy
A3 If you make sure to have a healthy life/work balance then you are happier in both places. My problem (or maybe issue since it's not really bad) is that I like work TOO much and they overlap quite often. #ditchbook
A3: Take intermittent mind breaks for yourself when you can. For me, that's quickly scrolling through Twitter, or listening to some comedy bits. Always have to take care of yourself first so that you're 100 percent devoted to taking care of your students! #DitchBook
A4. Use as choices 4 Ss. They are currently planning a trip of Colonial America and could use Tour Builder or My Maps. They had never heard of either and are so engaged. They even figured out a way to use Tour Builder collaboratively since there is no option for that. #ditchbook
A4: Collaborative spaces for students such as Google Slides and @FLipgrid provide ample opportunities for a wide range of putting pedagogy into practice. #DitchBook
Yep, and I LOVE sharing my art with my students -- the TRUE artists give me advice and teach me. It's built some GREAT bonds with students who aren't successful in more traditional areas. #ditchsummit#ditchbook#studentsareamazing
I meet with each Ss in the AM. Shake their hand before they cross the threshold and say their name. In that one action there is a lot going on. They also answer a question of the day and meet with me so I get to converse with them all before 8:30 #ditchbook
A4: Use it as a choice, to connect with others, or as a research tool. Tech doesn’t just have to be a quick add on or busy work. It’s a great way for Ss to (safely) see how big our world is💜 #DitchBook
A4) It’s all about finding tools that I Han was lessons you already have or make them better. Too often we find tech and feel like we have to throw out what we already do. #DitchBook
A4: Understand that tech integration isn't simply substitution or using a "$200 pencil" for work. What's in it for the students? How can your lesson be enhanced for them using the tech resources available? Student-centered mindsets produce the most engaging lessons. #DitchBook
A3: Through creating opportunities for success and "hard fun" we can create happiness in our classes. We can scaffold with tools like @wakelet to help Ss curate their own content and invest in their future. #DitchSummit#ditchbook
A4: By allowing students to teach the class using tech in the way they choose. I have learned a great deal about tech by doing this. #DitchBook#DitchSummit

A4. My good friend @nzefeldt gave me some great advice years ago. He said pick 3 tech tools that you can use in many different ways. Dive in and get REALLY good at using them with your students. That advice has not failed me yet. #ditchbook
A4Tech IS vital. I teach firsties and they know their way around tech. Tech responsibility, maneuvering apps, websites and understanding that the freedom has power for good and bad are wise tools. I also teach them about respecting tech — then we work on finding... #ditchbook
A3: Sometimes you have to take the detours with the students, whether it's a great question to discuss further, an interesting story to share, or a random joke. Those moments build community. #ditchbook
