A1 Relationships kids have to believe in what you are telling them and believe that you are there for their well being. Also positive interactions with all stake holders and players at all times. #txhsfbchat
A1
Have to create a culture of strong expectations
Have to build connection/communication between players/parents/school/community
Have to delegate tasks & teach your coaches to improve their methods
#TXHSFBCHAT
A1 Character. You have to make time to reach these athletes how to become men. If you can get their hearts right then the stuff on the field will take care of itself. #txhsfbchat
A1: Build trust between coaching staff and players, teach character first, do not EVER neglect the sub-varsities (ideally we need all coaches in all athletic periods). #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: Building relationships and being consistent in everything you do! Focus on the development of your kids as people and football success will happen! #TXHSFBCHAT
A1:To me it starts with building the program around great people. Asst Coaches, support staff, parents, teachers, admin, players etc. Build on a foundation of trust and a group of people with a common goal and you'll be successful. All about people and relationships #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: You have to find what makes the kids tick! Check what has worked in the past and what hasn’t. Whichever you decide, be 100% sure every single person in the program is heading the same direction and have the end goal in the forefront of their decisions. #TXHSFBCHAT
#txhsfbchat
A1-The 64k dollar question right out of the gate. Create a system with measurable goals. Make sure it is one you believe in because you may die on that hill. All stakeholders need to know the expectations and why they are necessary.
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachSwag08: txhsfbchat A1 Character. You have to make time to reach these athletes how to become men. If you can get their hearts right then the stuff on the field will take care of itself. #txhsfbchat
A1) It has to be somethingthat is built in multiple areas. Have to have a program with pillars that can support it with the academics, community and athletics. If you have a program that is only built on one of those pillars, you can have intermittent success only. #txhsfbchat
A1) I would say building relationships and being consistent. Relationships w/ players, coaches, administrators, teachers, & everyone in between. Consistency in your words and actions. #txhsfbchat
A1: 1)Create an atmosphere or school marketing campaign to attract as many student-athletes as possible. Make being a Bulldog something fun and special!
2)Evaluate and Establish a Strength & Conditioning Program that the student-athletes are excited about continued #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: 'Culture' - who you are. I believe that is built in the weight room in the off season. Relationships can be built there. A coach gets to see and mold individual and group mindset (and see what he's got to work with, correct.) #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: about participating and investing in.
3)Create a Staff that is in it for long haul and then create a Bulldog Football Handbook that will serve as the program’s “blueprint” for sustained success, covering everything that is Bulldogs Football from a #TXHSFBCHAT more!
A1; Bulldogs Football from a DFO position in creating economic component to program to what a players locker should be organized like. #TXHSFBCHAT right from an interview I did 8 years ago Coaches
Barry Hoover DC Vernon HS
A1) I think you start by laying out what are your standards of excellence that we will live up to by holding each other accountable. #txhsfbchat
A1:To me it starts with building the program around great people. Asst Coaches, support staff, parents, teachers, admin, players etc. Build on a foundation of trust and a group of people with a common goal and you'll be successful. All about people and relationships #TXHSFBCHAT
It is always good to go back to the basics every few years. Same thing in the middle of a season. Often a good idea to hit reset and have a basics focused practice with the kids. #txhsfbchat
Significant not success. Wins and losses are how success is measured, significance is impact with a specific goal, not by chance. You can win because you have more talent, it doesn’t show quality. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2
Build accountability into their academic day-to-day experience. Our school has an athlete study hall twice a week. Players are expected to show up. We monitor grades & address issues before it’s too late.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A1- O/D/ST schemes are flexible based on talent but the core of who and what we are should not be as flexible. A good sword blade is flexible, a good man must be adaptable but we have to have a rudder to guide us. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Constant supervision. Assign a coach as your academic coordinator to check the grade reports and set up appropriate team tutorials. Each coach is also responsible for his position grades. Build positive, trusting relationships in the building with teachers #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) For me, this is where the "stick" part of the stick and carrot come in. Academics are checked bi-weekly in the off-season and in-season to make sure we are on the right track. If not, it needs to be addressed and answered as to why. If not, time for the PIT. #txhsfbchat
A2 our HC assigns homework room and extra running for kids on the failure list. Has a bit of a competition with the football team versus the school. More than anything, it's the culture perpetuated by coaches. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: You cannot be a great teammate and a champion on the gridiron if you are okay or accept poor grades academically. Being a champion is NOT a light switch; champions give their best efforts in everything they do. Gain an understanding San Rafael’s Administrations’ #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: set clear expectations for players. Teach them how to take care of business in the classroom and show them that going to the teacher and asking for help goes a long way. Not following the masses is ok #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: again, I this one comes down to standards. Set the expectations, track grades, and provide the assistance needed to your athletes. Whether that be study hall or tutoring sessions. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 grade checks every two weeks start study tables at mid term. Anything under a C qualifies for study tables and your on it till you get grades up also it’s a fluid list every two weeks #txhsfbchat
A2: I suppose above all else the kids want to play in the game so taking that away for not maintaining a certain grade average may be the easiest way to accomplish this daunting task. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Each coach will monitor their players. If your position coaches treat their job as a “head coach” they will ensure academic success. Accountability is key and each student/athlete must always understand that “student” comes 1st for a reason & that won’t change. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) What gets measured will improve. Have to stay on top of grades and monitor regularly. Split up into off-season teams and compete with gpa. #txhsfbchat
A2: your program is ultimately a reflection on what you value. Reward and acknowledge achievement in the classroom. Speak about education positively and not just as something student-athletes need to do to stay on the field. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Celebrate grades. Reward athletes for performance on the field. If you have a position player of the week, you should also have an academic athlete of the week #TXHSFBCHAT
A2
Build accountability into their academic day-to-day experience. Our school has an athlete study hall twice a week. Players are expected to show up. We monitor grades & address issues before it’s too late.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A2 during season weekly grade checks we run them for failing classes and do punishment for having 0s. Spring accountability teams and now they will gain or lose points for their team based on grades and also other things. Now they have pets holding them accountable #txhsfbchat
A2: You have to preach academic wins as much as you do winning on the field, along with study hall, class checks, progress reports, etc. Praise publicly those doing things the right way, like you would something on the field. Make it a priority, most kids will too #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: set the expectations, players must also know that part of being selfless (one of our covenants) is helping struggling students. We check grades weekly and reward good grades with award stickers. #txhsfbchat
A2. Promote academic success in the classroom. Make sure our upperclassmen set the tone and lead by example. Weekly grade checks in position meetings #TXHSFBCHAT
Most school have a student information database that can run daily grade reports and automatically email a report to the coaches. Just have to ask, as one of the schools IT guys, that is how I monitored he roster. In and out of season. #txhsfbchat

Q2: Have all coaches involved , constantly monitoring progress & rewarding academic success and reaching out to teachers...make them part of the team, after all, really we are one. #txhsfbchat
A1: Unified vision and beliefs by all. Staff chemistry feeds over to your team 10 fold. Coaches that are sold out to a greater cause for the betterment of the young men is something that can't be replicated. We try to out love and out care everyone as a team! #TXHSFBCHAT
A3:
Integrity.
Speak your truth. If nothing else, you’ve shown people who you are. If you’re a fraud, they’ll know it and can move on appropriately.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Integrity. My dad always says there is only two things a man can’t take away from you...your faith and your integrity. If you lost them you gave threw them away. A man with integrity will most likely be loyal. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) lip service is one thing but building bridges is equally important (classrooms , cafes, before practice) once or twice a week should do it. Starting practice later to fit teacher team work as well. #TXHSFBCHAT
I think it’s importanttomhold your high achievers accountable. If you get a 3.8 and it should be a 4.0, then you are underachieving. Some dudes have to grind for that 2.8! No difference Greatness isn’t a part time job. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) I may be misinterpreting but in my mind with integrity would come loyalty or at least someone who isn't going to put others down just so they can move up #txhsfbchat
A3. Integrity. Loyalty is important, but blind loyalty can be a negative if you are loyal to someone who is getting off track. Integrity means you do the right thing, regardless of the outcome. With integrity, you can still look at the person in the mirror. #txhsfbchat
A2) implement checks and balances that keep kids accountable. Do not accept less than their best. Stress the importance of grades and an education. No grades, no football! #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) Integrity is paramount. If you have Integrity, you can fail in other aspects of your life, but others will work with you and will forgive you and push you to improve if you are a person of integrity. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Loyalty can fail you if you’re not smart enough to know when to “get out” of a sticky situation Or faulty relationship. You can be loyal to the wrong thing/person/mindset. Integrity will never fail because doing right will always prevail!#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Academic Monitoring/Trust. We are coaches and often parental figures for young men. The saying "They don't care how much you know till they know how much you care" rings true. We try to use life lessons and real world examples (coaches/former players) to mentor. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2- Most important ability is availability. If you cannot make the grades then you could be the next Brady, Lewis, or who ever but it will not matter. Plus imagine that the first purpose of a school is to educate and create good citizens. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Integrity 1st- kids must be honest with themselves about their preparation and daily effort. Integrity ensures you are doing things for the right reasons/the right way, without selfish intentions. #WEnotme#TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Integrity. I don’t think there is anything more valuable then teaching young people to be honest, genuine, and always striving to do the right thing. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Integrity. I don’t think there is anything more valuable then teaching young people to be honest, genuine, and always striving to do the right thing. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Whether or not the scheme can be executed you our personnel! Is it simple enough for them to be able to explain it back to me? Is it a long term solution and not just a short term fix? #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Can I adapt my system to different sets of kids. My jimmys from this year may be different joes next year. My system must be flexible enough to handle that! #TXHSFBCHAT
Primary concern is athlete comprehension. “What can we do that they’ll understand and be successful with?” The goal is for them to have on-field comfort in what we’re doing.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A4) Should be, what will put my kids in best possible position to be successful. Too often it is, this is fun and new and exciting, the Facemelter Offense cannot be stopped. I am guilty of it as much as anyone. Get back to what you need to be great at -> Then Focus! #txhsfbchat
A4: O first - •The development of a physically dominate offensive line is the most important aspect for my team to be successful.
•A program that I try to emulate DLS believes that a great offensive line, is or will be the key to a successful team, because they #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Keeping things simple so my kids can play fast but making I️t look difficult to opponents. There are times when I️t looks really good on paper or on Saturdays but not on Mon.- Thurs. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Primary concern is can the players internalize the scheme and execute. Are we as coaches, giving the players in the best chance to be successful in all 3 phases of football. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Integrity. In a culture focused on instant gratification and self proclamation, that trait is seen less and less. Football when treated 5he right way teaches selfless life lessons. It takes integrity though to withstand the trials that can teach those lessons. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Making sure everything has a purpose and that all things fit together well. Also being as simple as possible with out limiting “answers”. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: O Still - control the tempo of practices and games.
•We will run the ball and be physical doing it
• To pass is a valuable weapon but it can be difficult to build a high school team around as a primary weapon. #TXHSFBCHAT
Personnel. What are our strengths. LINE or SKILLS maybe QB. Build your system around what u have but choose a versatile offense that allows u to be simple and utilize your advantage. Defensively play speed at all costs. #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachGarf: txhsfbchat Loyalty doesn't mean you cant disagree, can't challenge, can't make each other better. Groupthink can be as dangerous as anything #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: We have a "Scholar-Baller" program and use Periodic Grade checks throughout, praising the achievers and getting help where needed. The hardest part of it is the kids who don't make good choices - don't respond. we can't accept it - but in many cases can't chg it. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: D- Now •Multiple front scheme based on GAP control
•Everything starts out of an even look with the ability to stem to several odd looks.
•Prefer zone coverage over straight man, but really like combination coverage with the ability to isolate the #TXHSFBCHAT more !
A4: Keeping things simple so my kids can play fast but making it look difficult to opponents. There are times when it looks really good on paper or on Saturdays but not on Mon.- Thurs. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: More D - opponents’ best receiver.
•Fundamentals before blitzing, too often blitzing takes the place of coaching. Coaches need to coach fundamentals first.
#TXHSFBCHAT
It's personnel. Run a system that plays to your athletes strengths. Then make it simple so it is as efficient as possible. Get rid of the muck that slows kids down. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4 (cont.): since this is an interview question, a concern would be "what would make this transition easier?" I changed my terminology on this last coaching move, easier for one man to change than a team full of teenagers. #txhsfbchat
A4) Have a systematic approach to countering any type of problems the other side of the ball might give. Yes, most weeks you might add a wrinkle or 2 but ideally, they fit w/in the rules of your system. Also, does your system have ways to put players in best position? #txhsfbchat
A4: 1. Personnel (Speaks for itself). 2. Knowledge/Belief in answers (Every Offensive Scheme or Defensive Philosophy has won championships in some capacity. They can all work when executed. Being able to adjust and give your team answers is what set schemes apart.) #TXHSFBCHAT
A4- Building in concepts that touch more than 1 play or series. A passing concept that works as PA, Sprint, or 5-step for example. Saves time and lets the kids play faster. #TXHSFBCHAT
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachRikStewart: A4: It doesnt matter what coaches know, matters what kids learn. Can they play fast without thinking? Make learning simple. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 We have an Academic Top 10 posted every semester for our football players. Lowest on our last top 10 was a 3.7 GPA
Team GPA is also listed. 3.2 was our team GPA.
Also recognize highest GPA at awards night. #txhsfbchat
A4: First if you think they can't they won't. Don't limit yourself bc you think they can't do it. But don't do too much either. Find that happy medium that challenges the kids but is still easy to remember. Most importantly put them in a position to be successful. #txhsfbchat
A4-I've never been an HC/ coordinator, so haven't gotten to develop any systems, but I would think the primary concern is building your system around the athletes that you *have*, as opposed to forcing your athletes into a system that they may not be able to do (yet)#TXHSFBCHAT
A5
Constant self-evaluation. Quite frankly, I may not be ready yet. But I’m willing to bust my ass to learn & get better every day. A background in the principles of education and learning doesn’t hurt, either.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A3 Integrity. You can be loyal to the wrong people and head down the wrong path. Make an effort to do the right thing and then the next right thing and you will be working towards being as close to perfection as you can get. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5) I have failed and therefore I have learned. I thought I was the smartest coach there was, until I met others smarter and learned how much I didn't (and don't) know. But I now have the ability to look at that as an opportunity and pass on that lesson to others. #txhsfbchat
A5: One of the top things that qualifies any Coach is the willingness and passion for helping others. You are the one to set the standard and be the walking example of what your program culture represents. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: I’m a servant who desires to see all people who are in my circle succeed. I lead with an undivided notion and will confront every situation (positive or negative) head on with the player, team, school, and community all in mind. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: "What's more important, your right hand or you right arm?" Just as the hand is a subset of the arm, I believe loyalty is a subset of a person with integrity. Teaching my dudes integrity - honor and virtue (and loyalty.) ⚒️🙏👨🎓⚒️ #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: My ability to build relationships with my players, doing what is right, holding kids accountable, and putting them in a position to be successful. #txhsfbchat
A5- I have a passion to help keep kids learn and grow into strong productive members of society. I have done nearly every job and held nearly every title in a program. That gives me insight into how the structure should work. To be continued #txhsfbchat
A5 patience and ability to relate to players on a level more than just football. Strive to be better every day and work towards the goal everyday #txhsfbchat
A5: First and foremost, a passion for helping, leading, and witnessing young people succeed. The ability to bring together people to perform to their best behind a common bond and goal. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5 - When you have done everything you can to prepare yourself*AND* you are doing it because of your desire to develop the young people in your program, not just to satisfy your ego. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: never truly ready the first time but I’ve been fortunate enough to work under a HC that has let me develop and grow as a coach. He gives me any responsibility I ask for and can handle. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5) At this point in my career I am not qualified to lead a football program. Right now I am mainly concerned with developing into the best OL coach I can be. #txhsfbchat
A5:Leading a program is about more than winning games. Although we love winning...giving back & sharing the knowledge & experiences we have had as players & coaches with our team is what its about. Affecting lives positively, better sons, brothers and someday fathers #TXHSFBCHAT
A5 cont- I want to elevate the kids, school and community to levels they did not know they could attain. It can be measured in wins, yards and championships but also in graduations, families and a new understanding of who they are and what they can do! #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: my least favorite question in the interview process, because I really get uncomfortable "bragging" about myself. So, for all you youngsters out there....study up and get ready to answer this question, because it will be asked! #txhsfbchat
A5: having a vision and having the knowledge and resources to carry out that vision. Knowing how to delegate. Being able to choose the quality people to insert with in your program. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: High character, diligence, and a plan in place for success. Experience in every aspect of a football program and following my greatest passion #TXHSFBCHAT
Q4: Two-fold: What part of our system can our kids do & how do we develop sub varsity athletes so we can implement our scheme better every season until we are operating on all cylinders #txhsfbchat
A5 prepared, intelligent, pragmatic, humble, patient, consistent, optimistic, confident, enthusiastic, loyal, competitive, anticipatious (one of my boys made that up)#TXHSFBCHAT
Q4: That it's a 'system' - plays built off / setting up related plays. And that it's relatively easy to teach (and UNDERSTAND.) These are high school kids who want to please. Throwing continuous, inconsistent complexity at them week in and week out will not work #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: No past administrators, co-workers, assistant workers or opponents can accurately qualify me it is all guess work. - My past players through their life's & feelings towards me and our journey together #TXHSFBCHAT oh and @MARIAHRSWIFT
A5: Every Program decision is made for the betterment of our 80 young men. Lead and develop other leaders on a day 2 day basis. Understand the greater meaning of the opportunity I have to coach. Never being afraid of advice & not having every answers. A Purpose. #TXHSFBCHAT
