Tonight will challenge your thinking a little but hopefully give you more direction on how to teach and assess with a standards-based program. #espechat
Welcome to tonight's #espechat! Tonight's chat will be a 'Standards-Based Activity' extravaganza! We will move fast tonight with a new question coming every 5-6 minutes! We will follow the Q1/A1 format and don't forget the #espechat hashtag in your responses!
I am your guest moderator Jason Steele from Minot, ND I teach K-5 #PhysEd. Who do we have with us tonight? Where are you from and what do you teach? FYI - tonight's chat will be graded and GIFs will receive bonus points! #espechat
Q1) Standard 1: Share an activity that would be used in covering S1.E6.3 - Student performs a sequence of locomotor skills, transitioning from one to another smoothly without hesitation. #espechat
A1 put GIFs on the wall of a different locomotor skill for each suit of cards and ss pick up card and perform that locomotor skill around the gym until time to select next card #ESPEchat
I do this as a projection as a part of different locomotor challenge routines to music, but you could totally turn this into a task card type of rhythmic activity with different Ss doing different cards/combinations at the same time! #espechat
A2: With my littles, I use follow the leader. It is always a hit, and can be changed at any moment for you to be able to see what Ss can do or still struggle with. #espechat
A1: Cindy from Alabama here. Four corners using various forms of locomotor traveling and transitioning between the skills. @PhysEdDepot has a nice cartoon locomotor journey that is great for transitioning from skill to skill. #espechat#espechat
Q1) Standard 1: Share an activity that would be used in covering S1.E6.3 - Student performs a sequence of locomotor skills, transitioning from one to another smoothly without hesitation. #espechat
@PerkettPE A1: We utilize 5 cone agility drills. With cones set up like a dice. Make up a ton of different patterns and movements. Ss run through the agility 4-5 times and then get a new one.
A2) Challenge 1: Round Shape Balance (5 secs)> Travel at a Low Level (cone to cone)> In a Curvy Pathway //// Challenge 2: Twisted Shaped Balance (5 secs) > Travel at a Medium Level (cone to cone) > In a Zig-Zag Pathway...etc. #espechat
A1 today as a warm up the kids had to do a four count loco movement and then switch to a different loco movement. Ex 4 galloping steps and then 4 skipping steps. Also changed it to 8 counts/steps. #espechat
#espechat we do a four sided warm up--each side of the gym is a different movement pattern, so students transition into the next movement. Movement in open spaces and a skill is called our or projected on the screen when technology wants to cooperate--:)
A3) Create an opportunity for Ss to change an inactive moment with an active one. Worksheet would be easiest to show learning but could work in small groups/partners before sharing as a whole class. #ESPEchat
A2 also I used @JoeyFeith direction cards and allowing my Ss to understand the difference between straight, curve, around - then make connections with real life experiences etc #espechat
A1) weโve played locomotor tag, a game where 5 movements are projected on the wall and when you get tagged you switch to the next movement and continue traveling. K-2 handles it pretty seamlessly. #ESPEchat
A2: We use floor tape or long ropes connected to construct various pathways and then students practice identifying the pathways and traveling them using different body shapes.
#espechat
#espechat A3 By having Ss using their chromebooks and charting and graphing their pedometer steps over a course of time. Ss begin to see increased steps. Reflection ?: Why. Ss responding privately on device.
A3 could be a plagnet question, where the question is โwhatโs a way to become healthierโ with one choice being PA. โIdentifiesโ is the key word here #espechat
A3 - a simple active v non active chart - what happens to our bodies when active and what happens when not active - connect these to our โstrong organsโ students then discover different activities that promote physical activity #espechat
Q4) Standard 4: S4.E6.2b - Student works safely with physical education equipment. This is obviously a HUGE part of our classroom. How do you assess this standard? #espechat
A3) I use plickers questions to review HRFCs and match activities that correspond with each component. Try to review this as often as possible. #ESPEchat
A4) Running tally safety assessment based on teacher observation while using equipment. Mark a tally anytime a student needs a reminder and make a rubric based off of this #espechat
A1) I do a song for my little kids as a warm-up at times. Song gives cues and then when all locomotor skills are named, the song goes now lets see if you remember the sounds and they go by sound for each locomotor movement #espechathttps://t.co/KXal0uSbxY
#espechat A4 Before 8th gr Ss can use wgt rm they must show me proper two person and one person spotting techniques. Along with proper lift technique. Observation and yes you can do it or no you cannot not. When they feel ready to show me they can try again.
A) Just like Matt I talk to my kids all the time about being safe and making sure students are aware of the proper use of the equipment they are using in the class. #espechat
Q5) Standard 5: How would you have students demonstrate their knowledge of S5.E2.5 - Student expresses (via written essay, visual creative dance) the enjoyment and/or challenge of participating in a favorite physical activity. #espechat
A4 - are Ss able to correctly use the equipment safely - using GIFs and for people who know me I use them every lesson for everything. Example (GIF) of how we use 2promote using equipment safely - students discuss A&B and then do both and see why the correct one worked #espechat
A4: For me, I just use an observational checklist and instead of marking those who are safe, I would mark if I saw a problem - perhaps simply for the purpose of speaking privately with them about it at the end of class, or, obviously if potential of injury, immediately. #espechat
A4 - I've done lots of talking and modeling with correct use of equipment....which often leads to several reminders at the beginning for the younger kiddos. :) I've also asked students if that use was expected or unexpected...our schools uses this vocabulary often #espechat
We just recently started using @PolarGlobal HRMs and itโs been INCREDIBLE to see Ss manipulate their exertion to stay in the green/heart healthy zone. It makes talking heart rate/cardio health sooooo much easier!! #ESPEchat
A5 this assessment doesnโt match the standard, but Iโd go with a listing activity. List activities you enjoy. List activities that are challenging. Could expand to why off of the list. Just not enough time to write an essay. #espechat
A4) have students practice procedures (where to put it when I'm talking, how to put it away, etc.) with fake, imaginary equipment. It works! Also have a couple students demonstrate procedures using real equipment for others to watch and learn. #espechat
A5: I looooooove exit tickets!!!!! OR! Give students a question and have group discuss, come up with answer and have them verbally tell me as a group. #espechat
A5: You could use this: https://t.co/FG9UjpAgWf and have students create their own dance or a dance in partners or small groups. They could add their own move and a set number of the moves shown here let it be totally open! #espechat
A5) I talk to my students & at times I give into the requests of my kids and use the activities they love and modify them if needed. I am doing dance for my SMART goal & my students are asking me if they can choose the song and if the song has to be in English #espechat
A6) Could use the build activities in this video. Just swap out stick handling for dribbling while shielding/protecting #espechathttps://t.co/Nu0eyOvBXH
5th gr Ss have been learning about the concept of protecting/shielding through the lens of stick handling. Thanks to @physedreview's for "Toilet Paper Tag"...perfect warm up to the scaffolding of activities we used later in class highlighted in the video below! #physed#S2E5
A5) Iโve had students keep journals where we have a handful of written assignments, but the one daily question is โDid I enjoy todayโs activity? Explain your answer.โ Youโd be surprised how much you learn about Ss and their relationships from this simple question! #ESPEchat ๐คฃ๐คฃ
A5: I had Ss create personal fitness plans where they could self select activities based on a rubric. Ss picked karate, dance, various fitness exercises. Ss drew pics & recorded videos of themselves doing the activity. Kennedra checking in from MD. #espechat
Q5) Standard 5: How would you have students demonstrate their knowledge of S5.E2.5 - Student expresses (via written essay, visual creative dance) the enjoyment and/or challenge of participating in a favorite physical activity. #espechat
Q7) Standard 2: What is your favorite or student's favorite fleeing activity? - S2.E5.3b - Student applies simple strategies in fleeing activities. #espechat
A6: Maybe not quite what this means, but you could pair up kids and think of ways to use these BB fitness activities from @drweberfit: https://t.co/vaqqcxaExn There are 4 Slides files filled with BB fitness activities. Have students put them together to create a w/o.#espechat
A6: During my team handball unit, I used Dribble tag! I know it is not a 1V1 but after a few rounds it turns into 1V1. #espechat I've also done SS dribble to defender and either pass, shoot, or make a move!
I'm so glad you used the term "littles". I wrote a post the other night and used it, and then thought... hmmm. Do folks other than in the EdTech world use that term for our youngest students? Not sure, so I switched it out! #espechat
A7: My favorite was something I called "Rescue Me." Select Ss to tag others. Ss who are tagged freeze & put both hands up & out over their head. Unfrozen Ss comes & makes a bridge w/frozen Ss (hands to hands). Another unfrozen Ss goes under bridge #espechat
Q7) Standard 2: What is your favorite or student's favorite fleeing activity? - S2.E5.3b - Student applies simple strategies in fleeing activities. #espechat
A7) Ss loovvvvee RPS tag. Ss line up at midcourt and play RPS. If you win youโre the tagger and if not you must retreat to your baseline. I love watching 1 v 1 tag. Each S has a scarf in their pocket and simultaneously try taking from their opponent. #ESPEchat
A7: two person tag! Get a partner. Partner A counts to 10, while Partner B walks away. When Partner A gets to 10, they chase Partner B. When they get to them, they tag them and then switch roles #espechat
A7: Ss would dribble and flip cones and try to get the cone to land on it's flat side. Did this with middle schoolers too and it was a challenge. #espechat
Q8) Standard 3: How can you assess S3.E3.1 - Student identifies the heart as a muscle that grows stronger with exercise, play and physical activity. #espechat
A7: My students love scooter tag. It is a great fleeing activity and awesome workout. Get tagged, do 10 reps of an activity, and return to the activity.
#espechat
A7) #espechat We have a couple of favorites: Dog Catchers & I play "who let the dogs out?" If caught by a dog catcher, stu heads to dog pound to perform an exercise that will help them to become stronger to out run/dodge catchers! Everybodys it tag where everyone is it. if caught
The first person I ever knew that used it and now uses it as her "brand" is Christine Pinto - Gafe4Littles. She is a Cali girl too, so maybe that's just a West coast thing! When I've used it in trainings here in the midwest with classroom Ts, none of them are familiar. #espechat
Absolutely! Collaboration is why it's my favorite. I tell my students it takes 3 of you to rescue one. I also tell them to call for help when their frozen and explain the importance of helping a friend in need. #espechat
A8) Spend time teaching about the heart muscle, the activities that make it stronger. Have students share their own list of activities that makes the heart muscle stronger. #ESPEchat
Thanks! I loved learning more about my students from their drawings and pics. Did this at the middle school level too & asked Ss to set fitness goals for themselves. Ss turned in power points w/videos of them doing all kinds of activities. #espechat
A8) Discuss the importance of what our heart does & why it is important to keep our heart healthy & happy. students identify heart activities/food/behaviors vs non healthy activities/foods/behaviors #espechat
Turkey tag. Turkeys are in the barn right before Thanksgiving, I save them and let them out. The farmers have to tag them and escort them back into the barn, the vegetarians live next door, sneak onto the property & rescue them one at a time to become โfree rangeโ turkeys again.
A6: modified patintero with dribbling. Here is a video of patintero. https://t.co/ioKZH7YZtD I expand the space and have students dribble trying to avoid taggers while maintaining ball control. #espechat
A9) Peer feedback is great! Need to provide how to give feedback and the 1 (maybe 2) things they can look for. Need to guide a lot, especially younger. Also, Ss need to know that giving 100% to their friend is not helpful if they need help improving. #ESPEchat
A7) I've shared before, but mine is "Hug Tag" and it's not close. So good for class morale. I also like "Scarf Tag" where Ss slide on scarves (skating) When tagged, 3 tosses and catches with scarves to improve hand eye coordination. #espechat
A9: Yes! Peer Check-lists! Peer observations, and task cards/challenges. This also gives an opportunity to SS to IDENTIFY movements, skills, or points of performance. #espechat
A9) Absolutely! Very powerful tool! @OPENPhysEd has peer assessments for many of their modules. Also can use simple checklists and/or video analysis on an iPad to peer assess. #ESPEchat
A9: Almost every one of my lessons involves some form of peer feedback. I can't imagine trying to give my Ss useful feedback all on my own. #espechat Some times it is as simple as a thumbs up for a certain skill used. (pt 1)
#ESPEchat I'm getting hungry so I'm going to duck out. Thanks @PerkettPE for moderating tonight! Great job with the topics and the @SHAPE_America standards!
Q10) Standard 5: How do you have students explain/demonstrate knowledge of S5.E1.3 - Student discusses the relationship between physical activity and good health. #espechat
A8: Just had a thought of showing Ss a video of 2 people...A.) person lacking energy after eating some junk foods/sitting on the couch B.) person vibrant after physical activity. Ask Ss to circle which of these makes your heart stronger? A or B #espechat
Q8) Standard 3: How can you assess S3.E3.1 - Student identifies the heart as a muscle that grows stronger with exercise, play and physical activity. #espechat
A 9: With tag games right now I split the class in half. one half plays and the other half is coach. They are looking for the on strategy agreed on before the game. While they are coach they tally what they say. The discuss w partner, then switch roles. #espechat (pt 2)
Yes, I will project questions on the screen and we have partner walk and talks. They give constructive feedback to peers and then discuss how they can personally improve.
#espechat
A9) Yes, with rubrics and BAM. I have them self assess then have their partner assess and compare their viewpoints collaboratively. They love it. #espechat
A9) #espechat peer assessments yes! Not as much as I used to do, but when I do peer assessments, I am AMAZED at what the ss pick up on & what they learn from watching others. I do have those few ss who think their buddy can do no wrong
Thanks, Mike! Happy to help fellow #physed teachers. I learn a lot from you and other @OPENPhysEd teachers like @alexobrien as well. Keep it up! #espechat
In reply to
@PhysEdFreak, @OPENPhysEd, @alexobrien
#espechat A9 VBserve small groups of 3-4; 3 groups/net. All serve same side of net, 1 server; 1 retriever; 1 peer evaluator w/ teaching cues, checking off as server serves. Set # of tries be4 rotating. Evaluator reviews w/ server in transition. Find Ss harder on each other than I
A9: Absolutely! At middle school level we did fitness sheets for exercises. Ss had to check & explain the areas their partner need to improve. Example...doing a push up-Ss had to check if the body was in a plateau or had a hill (bottom up) #espechat
Q9: This folder of "Self/Peer Assessment" might be useful: https://t.co/63gKZb9d70 even if only as templates 4 something you want the students to peer assess. If anyone has some to add, I'm happy to convert to Docs format & add if you're willing to share. Would luv more.#espechat
