Hi all! Patricia, Dean of Ss, CT
A1: I remember coming back from jogging...turned on the news...was shell-shocked that whole day...
So different than how news is broken now, just 15 short years later! https://t.co/o5x6lXFzp1
A1: National news broke the story...how things have changed.
A1: A colleague alerted us and every TV in every room in the school was on the live feed. Witnessed history - that was the lesson.
A1: I was student teaching at Peet Jr. High in Cedar Falls IA. My Ss entered the room and asked me if I hear what had happened.
I was teaching history in PV and walked into another history teachers class and saw a tower had been hit.
A1. I was teaching. I had an early morning meeting, and then was teaching 7th grade when the co-worker across the hall told me.
I was a junior in high school, walked into class and the TV was on with the coverage -- we just sat and watched in silence
I was at school getting ready to start class. A student told me.
A1: Eerily similar for those Ss to my own with the Challenger, watching it live as it happened.
I was in similar situation. Tried my best to have a sense of calm for my students.
Man, how the times have changed in 15 years with receiving news. Crazy.
A1: Soph at UNI - got a phone call to turn on my TV and was then glued to coverage for 48 hours.
A1: Air Force 1 landed in Omaha and took off for DC. Only plane in the sky that afternoon.
Sitting in lunchroom/study hall when it came across the national news. The silence was unforgettable
A1: I was dismissed early from class at UNI by my professor, came home and saw my roommates glued to the TV.
A1: 4th grade. On tv at breakfast with mom and brother @ home and on at home room during school.
I watched the NBC news clips today, — shivering how real it still is, like it was yesterday. https://t.co/FaECECkISD
2nd period W History II. Announcement came over PA. We huddled around a computer/radio stream listening to reports
Welcome to Mighty Midget ( I assume ELC is what I think it is).

A1: Another English T from NYC originally. Remember being worried for her family.
A1: walked into BLDG 3 basement ready to start another day. Heard the news &watched w/ colleagues as 2nd plane hit 2nd tower

Jerod, Associate Principal, tweeting from Magnolia, DE
Derek, MS Social Studies teacher at South Tama MS! Stopping by a bit late tonight.
Good to see you here, Derek!
A1: School was just getting ready to start and I was standing in the hall. A student told me.
Yes, I was watching CNN this morning, and it all the details are still engraved in my mind 15 years later.
We turned on the classroom TV just after 2nd plane hit. WIll never forget Ss reaction that day. https://t.co/8AkByu6SIU
A1: walked into BLDG 3 basement ready to start another day. Heard the news &watched w/ colleagues as 2nd plane hit 2nd tower
A1: Remembering it feeling like time stopped in the whole building.
A1: Teaching 2nd graders. Went up to office at recess and heard the news. https://t.co/WBAOXjgYXd
Q1: Think back 15 years. Where were you when you heard the news on this day and how was this news relayed to you?
The live feed from NBC is very telling - trying to get any info they could with raw emotion. https://t.co/HP31SeAYkr …
The live feed from NBC is very telling - trying to get any info they could with raw emotion. https://t.co/31AKP7yPDw …
A1 I was in convocation at Del. State U. We were dismissed. I called my mom & she told me what was going on
A1 had a kid at PV who's dad was flying out of New York that morning. It was a scary unknown feeling for all us....
A1: Sitting in my library as a 5th grader...stunned by what I witnessed yet had very little understanding. Remember lots of tears.
Q2: What do or will the conversations with students about this topic sound like in your setting?
Thank you. I'm checking in late, but glad to get back to my Twitter chats for the 16-17 school year
Hello , Michelle TG, Instructional Coach from NWIowa
Awesome! We are glad to have you, man.
A2: We simulated the day on Friday in US History - HS juniors were 1 or 2...
A2: Every year I play the documentary "102 Minutes That Changed America" and the conversations we have are so incredibly rich.
I had the same feeling. So eery. Those images still so engrained. https://t.co/dhklbsQeY7
A1: Remembering it feeling like time stopped in the whole building.
Thanks. I'm glad to be here
A-1: Meeting with our admin team and remember how quickly the focus and agenda for the day changed dramatically.
Thank you! I'm glad to be here
Hi, just joining . Instructional coach from Southwest Iowa
A2: Conversations will begin w/remembering those who died & the importance of safety & security not only in our school but country
A2 Im gonna tread lightly. Hard to do justice with limited amount of time.
Welcome, Nancy. thank you for being with us.
A2: It's strange that none of the Ss in our school were even alive. Fact that tomorrow is 9/12 downplays its discussion, tomorrow
A2.1: Past 2 years have been even more meaningful since the kids I am teaching now were not even alive in 2001. Hard to believe.
So many adults had the same reaction, myself included! https://t.co/gCmT4aM51e
A1: Sitting in my library as a 5th grader...stunned by what I witnessed yet had very little understanding. Remember lots of tears.
A2: CHallenging to make it as relevant to Ss who weren't born yet, or too young to remember. Especially during Homecoming.
A2: I don't remember the specific conversations, just that they didn't have anything to do with my Math lesson I'd planned.
A2: When I taught 4th, we focused on the heroes who lost their lives that day and discussed the word patriotism.
A2: I was teaching middle school, & we were instructed not to turn on the news during the day...we chatted briefly about family
A1: heard on the way to school about a plane hitting WTC. Didn't know h Iw serious until l8r, teaching Title I.
Too bad - that was live history.
A2: My 4th grader has the assignment to interview people who experienced 9/11 & very specific feeling ?s to ask.
not knowing all of the details and the uncertainty made it challenging.
It's hard to believe it was 15 years ago! I remember every detail like it was yesterday. I was flying home from campus
A2.1: Nonetheless, important to talk about to give them awareness. Ss are usually curious to know how it impacted us
A2. For 5th graders this is history. I get a lot of questions about times when we were not at war.
We opened the PV auditorium for students to meet/talk and pray
I agree - sad that it’s downplayed - such important lessons learned that day and the days following. https://t.co/8X4Jucf9jI
A2: It's strange that none of the Ss in our school were even alive. Fact that tomorrow is 9/12 downplays its discussion, tomorrow
That is very true...but we didn't have all the info yet, they asked to err on the side of caution.
When I taught 3rd gr, our conversations always focused on the heroic acts of the first responders and incredible acts of courgage.
I like that idea. That certainly can help Ss connect with those people who remember that day. Makes it more real
Q2: It's hard for kinders to understand, so we talk about 👮🏻🚒 keeping us safe/protecting us so we can be free.
I've got a shirt (that I got from the memorial) that I plan to wear, tomorrow
I agree with Colin. It's important to acknowledge those who lost their lives and loved ones.
A2: Opportunity: How can we compare the feelings about Pub Safety surrounding 9/11 w/ campaigns like Black Lives Matter?
A-2: The importance of making the event relevant and understandable for our students - current 9th graders born in 2001.
Strange to think that our S weren't alive nor have they known a time when troops were not deployed in war zones.
Tough for me to tell the Flight 93 "Let's Roll" story without loosing it.
You get to help them visualize what we have engrained, just age-apropriately. https://t.co/nsxuCQOcju
A2.1: Past 2 years have been even more meaningful since the kids I am teaching now were not even alive in 2001. Hard to believe.
Q3: It’s been said that 9/11 must now be taught, not just mourned. What does this mean to you?
A3 To be able to discuss from all sides w/o being overwhelmed with emotion.
A3: Many of our Ss where 3 yrs old or younger when this happened. Like other historical events, it must be taught to be remembered
A3) in my opinion it means we need to teach the history that led to this moment and the events that grew out of.
A3: Ss need to know more than it was a sad day - teach the American spirit of helping others and the selflessness demonstrated.
A2: Using materials related to The Falling Man photo in AP Lang--https://t.co/J8TDoMhkVL , For The Falling Man poem,...
A3: We must teach in addition to mourning. Ss need to understand the peril we went through in order to unite.
A3: We help Ss understand significance and it effects us today. Many lessons can be learned from this tragic day.
A3: Oo tough ? I'd say we need 2 teach it as a horrible attack on this country & we need 2 be thankful for the country we live in.
A3: We have so many speeches, articles, photos, and more as a result that Ss really engage with for argument, analysis, and more.
Relevance! Yes!
It’s shocking that Ss younger than 8th grade weren’t even born. https://t.co/UEqKi8B254
A-2: The importance of making the event relevant and understandable for our students - current 9th graders born in 2001.
A-3: while we continue to mourn the tremendous loss of life it is also important to recognize and pay respect to the heroes!
A3: Regardless of age, it is imp to understand what a huge event in history this was for our country and what happened after.
Q3 https://t.co/lSixTbl8GX
Q3: It’s been said that 9/11 must now be taught, not just mourned. What does this mean to you?
A3: and Americans need to show pride for where they live and realize that our freedoms do come at a cost.
A3) 9/11 also needs to be taught in the context of current events. They may have been young or unborn on 9/11, but it is relevant
Emotion isn’t such a bad thing. Raw, transparent emotion puts it into perspective.
A3 opport. to talk about who and why
A3: it's a balance between teaching and mourning; opportunity for a lesson in empathy in addition to historical significance
A3: For many Ss relevance comes not in having lived to see 9/11, but having lived to see family go off to fight the resulting war.
A3: One thing is certain, modern technology makes 9/11 resources more available than ever before.
A3:So much of what is happening in the world stems from 9/11...it is the cause as well as effect of history...we need to study it!
That photo gives me chills every time I see it. So raw. So real. So full of emotion.
A3: I think I understood how my parents felt about Pearl Harbor for this first time in my life. Not sure you can teach that
A3: I wonder if we get emotional and mourn 9/11 as Ts because of our experiences with it. Are Ss in a different place emotionally?
A3: How can we do the same with other important events like Pearl Harbor? Maybe the best way is to connect them all...
Teaching empathy is a great take on this subject. https://t.co/iQo2CYGwB7
A3: it's a balance between teaching and mourning; opportunity for a lesson in empathy in addition to historical significance
Q4: What are some key areas of focus for discussions about 9/11?
Teaching empathy is a great take on most all topics...
A3 we don't teach events, we teach critical thinking, primary vs secondary sources, opposing perspectives, culture, diversity
A3. It is teaching about the history of the day and years after, but also how our lives continue on through good and bad times
My grandma gave me a box full of VHS recorded news reels a year or so after 9/11. It’s all found online now.
A4: Decisions. These tough decisions that all individuals had to make that day. First responders, people in the towers, etc...
A4: As an English and journalism teacher? Rhetoric. Symbolism. And so much more.
A4: It is important for Ss to discuss the impact this event had on our country and also very easy to tie into school safety.
A4: How do we care for others and not put our priorities first in situations?
A4: Why? Ss need to realize that their reasoning is never enough to hurt/kill anyone.
A4 discuss the Why it happened, Response, ramifications,
A4: Like with much of history, analysis of reaction to the events of that day and beyond.
A4: We need to discuss patriotism, resiliency, perseverance, unity.
This is a GREAT question! I agree with both of your questions. Is it hard for me b/c I remember it? https://t.co/DnY6TGP0Ty
A3: I wonder if we get emotional and mourn 9/11 as Ts because of our experiences with it. Are Ss in a different place emotionally?
A4. Patriotism, heros, overcoming challenges and difficult times
Love this ! Such an important lesson to take away from this day. So many amazing/tragic examples https://t.co/iQ4Q9oQ2bK
A4: How do we care for others and not put our priorities first in situations?
Truth! https://t.co/AScwjcZ9M3
A4: Why? Ss need to realize that their reasoning is never enough to hurt/kill anyone.
A4: Heroic efforts and how the events within this day have impacted so many things in the future.
A-4: The brave men and women who faced so much adversity and uncertainty, yet demonstrated so many heroic feats as Americans!
At schl planning w/colleague-media asst told us to turn on classroom tv- then explaining to Ss what was happening
A4 unity, empathy, resiliency, loss, understanding, bravery.
A4: Also need to talk about how the word "cool" is inappropriate in describing the events. Many students don't understand that.
We are just about ready for Q5!
Powerful was a visit Firehouse in NY City and finding a memorial to the 12 firefighters lost on that day. Some emotions too much
Keeping it raw and real tonight, ! Keep it coming!
Q5: Many Ss weren’t born or were young. How do we paint a picture keep the legacy alive for heroes and fallen victims?
this is bringing back so many memories and emotions.
A5: Show em victims' faces/families. Ask how it'd be in their shoes. How would they feel and life be different?
And trying to explain so many unknowns to my 6 and 10 YO children. Emotions.
A5 CNN student news had kids that lost parents on 9/11. That got to my S.
It felt horrible with the towers were hit but when they collapsed it just went to a different level.
A5: There are so many great tribute videos that recap this event...it is almost a disservice to our Ss if they are not shown one.
A similar problem for our parents trying to keep Pearl Harbour legacy going? https://t.co/Kq9qwNYUCw
Q5: Many Ss weren’t born or were young. How do we paint a picture keep the legacy alive for heroes and fallen victims?
A5 we need to continue to tell their stories. Their stories of bravery and heroic sacrifice.
Q5
https://t.co/uyEpVfDZir
Q5: Many Ss weren’t born or were young. How do we paint a picture keep the legacy alive for heroes and fallen victims?
This. https://t.co/TgkEbpSjl2
A5 we need to continue to tell their stories. Their stories of bravery and heroic sacrifice.
A5: Ss consume video in mass quantities - they need to see this.
Yes, yes, and yes.
https://t.co/hojFSVUXfJ
A5 we need to continue to tell their stories. Their stories of bravery and heroic sacrifice.
A4 'hate' in history, cultural diversity, does either side win in war or terrorism? Who does terrorism target & why?
MIC DROP!
Boom!
https://t.co/4B3QSdYLQs
A5 we need to continue to tell their stories. Their stories of bravery and heroic sacrifice.
A5 - We can share photos from the day and days after that encourage discussion about patriotism and unity. https://t.co/hhaPKdtpcc
Ditto Holocaust and the attempted extermination of Native American Culture. https://t.co/IjabdtSA0x
A similar problem for our parents trying to keep Pearl Harbour legacy going? https://t.co/Kq9qwNYUCw
Q5: Many Ss weren’t born or were young. How do we paint a picture keep the legacy alive for heroes and fallen victims?
Resources are out there. We can't be afraid to use them. A moment of silence isn't enough anymore. https://t.co/gphJbfyxYc
Yep. Speaks volumes to the power and importance of video as our Ss media of choice. https://t.co/gzgoEVO5Jz
A5: Ss consume video in mass quantities - they need to see this.
A5 show them. Write about it.
My Sept 11th page https://t.co/9JaoVcCDN0 has lesson plans & links to how to teach this infamous date in our history.
A5: Tell their stories. I have been amazed at how much my Ss connect to the stories of these families. Usually hold back tears.
my wife was pregnant with our oldest at that time. It is part of our story that we share with her.
A5: The children born after 9/11 who lost their fathers are the same age as our kids. That's powerful. https://t.co/4ycqRIQwmM .
Q6 is right around the corner!
I think we need to involve as many primary sources as we can. Plus also compare and contrast to other events like Pearl Habor
Q6: What is your go-to lesson or resource you have found helpful when teaching about 9/11?
will be starting in 15m, stop on by
A6: "102 Minutes That Changed America" is by far the greatest resource I have used. The documentary is meaningful & powerful.
A6: I would say sharing my own experience and asking others to share theirs. History Channel helps too...https://t.co/40FDylJPcs
A6: I would say sharing my own experience and asking others to share theirs. History Channel helps too...https://t.co/SdVsHFQkIt
What age level would you say for the 102 Minutes documentary?
A6: Important to understand the culture, lives of the people who initiated attack. Literature, video, news articles speak volumes.
How do we teach it in a way that celebrates the American spirit of grit yet doesn't create animosity or blame against others?
A6: No matter time of year, 9/11 is essential conversation reading Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner & A Thousand Splendid Suns.
Great question! It seems like even if you just want to share unity and grit, blame always gets thrown in. https://t.co/ltELMK0rTW
How do we teach it in a way that celebrates the American spirit of grit yet doesn't create animosity or blame against others?
A6: I think I will share my experience and a video. Ss respond with a quick write. https://t.co/nIxMkMfOjq
A6: I would say sharing my own experience and asking others to share theirs. History Channel helps too...https://t.co/SdVsHFQkIt
A6: Read it with ss and ask if they have seen it in the newspaper or on tv lately. Ask what mom/dad say.
https://t.co/Tk1q7dqvgZ
Our final question of the evening is coming right up!
READ why a nod received leads to a nod given. A smile begets other smiles. What you get, pay forward. https://t.co/XvCOMOnjHB
Is it blame, or is it acknowledging that a group of men were responsable for their actions? https://t.co/vryDAIXTL9
Great question! It seems like even if you just want to share unity and grit, blame always gets thrown in. https://t.co/ltELMK0rTW
How do we teach it in a way that celebrates the American spirit of grit yet doesn't create animosity or blame against others?
Q7: What is one thing from tonight’s chat you will take with you to your discussions this week with your students?
A7: Love the shared resources. Videos, news articles, books, and more.
A7 heroes, service and patriotism
A7: Important to remember tomorrow's not just 9/12, For many Ss, no conversation happened about 9/11 today. Don't just move on.
A7: Too many to choose just one...I will be reviewing the feed to use as many as I can!
A7: Wasn't planning to extend 9/11 lessons past Friday but I'm compelled to continue tomorrow - some research, sharing, & writing
A7: Or maybe that's how I approach it? It's the day after 9/11. How is the world different? Enter resources and more.
A7. It was great to hear others ideas and themes that can be taken form this chapter in our history
A7 thanks to everyone for sharing their stories and resources. So many too choose from
A7: To remember to never forget and to also think about how we continue to move forward and get better regardless of events.
A7: Start off the topic w/ visuals. Pics or videos. Then explain 👮🏻🚒 bravery and what freedom really means.
A7: There were SO many great resources shared tonight. I’m going to check out the videos and ’s page on 9/11.
A7 thank you all for your personal stories. The resources shared are really powerful.
Yes! Please don’t skip the discussions just because it fell on a weekend. https://t.co/Wqqgy3jw0e
