I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday! We are celebrating Multicultural Day in our K class today. We are blessed to live in a WONDERFUL WORLD, despite our very real challenges. I’m off for an early run! #bfc530#JoyfulLeaders#tlap#pln365#k12
We talk a lot about perspective and point of view. We are the sum of our experiences. All of us share those in a safe environment to learn more about each other and ourselves. #bfc530
It starts with building a relationship first. Once you learn about a student, you will find out information about them that you can use to assist in your lessons. #bfc530
The school home connection is priceless, have Ss share there family traditions, revolve a project around Ss exploring thier cultural backgrounds, encourage families to visit the classroom, make the connections! #bfc530 😊 👍
Thats the job of the teacher. The first question you ask a student has to be about them. Make the connections for them. Build in a reason for teaching this specific content. #bfc530
I love my #bfc530 PLN. They are are my tribe now and I side tweet many. Hearing opinions from different parts of the world, different grades and different levels has been the most amazing professional-changing thing ever.

Students write in the genres and about the themes they read, using topics from their lives: poems about their neighborhoods, essays about their intersecting identities, stories in verse about their struggles, articles about their growth. #BFC530
Morning #bfc530
Choice In their projects. Currently creating websites with a few classes. I outline the technology components. They pick the subject:) I learn so much about them:)
Hi #bfc530- I embrace sharing- students can bring in things that are important to them and that have some significance. It goes much deeper than 'show and tell'- they are bravely sharing parts of their lives and family histories- photos, collections, artifacts #bfc530
Good morning! Feeling so much more together after 2 ‘movie days’ where I could get a little caught up-I feel like a bad teacher, but with two weekends away, back-to-back, the mountain was growing. Good movie too (The Mighty) -compare and contrast and reflection today! #bfc530
W community based case study problems Ss may present solutions from their experience. Examples: propose a local solution to homelessness, opiod addiction, school security. #bfc530
It begins with creating a classroom culture where students feel safe to share what they think, what they do, etc As a teacher I can not tolerate a student belittling another. If that happens, a "don't share" vibe ripples throughout the class #bfc530
I teach US History ... always try to tie in their life and how it was/is affected by History ... I always need to have a good response to the “why do I need to know this stuff?” #bfc530
We need to understand that home and community make students who they are. We need to honor and celebrate them. We need to ask questions and allow them to share. Bring community into the classroom. #bfc530

#bfc530 Ask #students to share the favorite #books they remember reading with parents. Even I you do not love #reading, it is hard not to feel connected to a question like this.
We're also writing with pen pals in a different community- we're sharing with them what we know/love about our own small town- lets them write to an authentic audience while expressing gratitude for what surrounds them #bfc530
As teachers, we also need to know why teachingnour content is important ... if your response is “because it’s in my standards” how will they ever connect to learning ... be the bridge #bfc530
A: so, sounds obvious, but from some peers’ chatter is neglected, I ask them! Love to share experiences, share songs/stories from own Lang/culture etc. I’d like to do more, so looking fwd to the team’s ideas and thoughts!#bfc530

What a great Q! In adult Ed we work from the premise that Ts come to programs with a vast array and diversity of experiences. We need to understand that Ss come with their experiences also. When you teach 17/18 yo final year Ss, this needs to happen. Let them share!
#bfc530
Personally, I always tell students that I will accept any of their leftovers from home the night before because I'm always starving and their lunches always look amazing #bfc530
Yes, but building relationships is more than having students fill out questionnaires... it is about really connecting with them not just knowing their favorite color or their taste in music. #bfc530
#bfc530 Ask #students to share the favorite #book they remember #reading with parents. This reminds all students that they had a time when they loved reading (or being #read to).
Not related to the day's lesson, but we start each day in our new randomized group with a getting to know you question. Helps them share their experience & knowledge with me & classmates: https://t.co/lHpPHJ7Z9Z#bfc530
Working in international schools with third culture kids, many of them have experiences that add a lot of value. It’s important to talk about because it essentially becomes part of their identity even if they do move on after a few years. #bfc530

Also, as an ELA teacher-an advantage with reflections, I Am poems, etc. Need to dig deeper though. I do well hearing voices and sharing, but need to do so much better connecting what they tell me with future lessons. Too much ‘doing the same’ with different kids 😳 #bfc530
It all begins and ends with my read aloud. Started with Marty McGuire @KateMessner; other books include Wonder and now Fish In a Tree @LynMullalyHunt Diverse characters help us see the diversity in ourselves, but also that we all needed to be treated kindly. #bfc530
A universal issue Dennis. We need to realize we teach Ss not content.Content is important-it’s a vehicle for learning. The push to Authentic Learning & Assessments May help address this issue. The irony is, when the focus is the Ss not the content, often marks improve
#bfc530
I always remind my students they will regret treating people poorly or saying something stupid when they get to be my age, but they never will regret being kind #bfc530
Provide (explicit) opportunities to bring in this knowledge & validate it. Sometimes students don't see the connections & think the only thing that matters in school is "school knowledge".
Music example: What kind of music do you like to listen to? Why?
#BFC530
I know sometimes I want to intervene with my son & his friends but they seem to be cool with each other. I try and set a good example on how friends should treat each other. We really do need to teach them everything - including how to have good relationships:)

One example is through Genius Hour. Some Ss stemmed their projects from what they know at home (goat farming and heart failure). Another S wanted to grow community health and researched how to bring the bicycle rental racks to STL. Can’t stop talking about GH. #bfc530
Tuesday in our class, 7th & 8th graders were gathering thoughts about middle-school culture. One wrote as MS custom: "Make fun of each other (jokingly)." Kicked off worthwhile conversation &, CoachK, I appreciate your warm, wise perspective. #bfc530
