Come out, come out, wherever you are, ! Say hello, and share any "1st day of summer vacation traditions" you have!
Hey Courtney Wa gr8 2 b here. 6 days left!!
Jennifer from Atlanta. My first day off I drink coffee while watching morning tv in my pjs
Hey Next year will be my first year in K
You are speaking my language! https://t.co/ZfM1zHV6kK
Jennifer from Atlanta. My first day off I drink coffee while watching morning tv in my pjs
Welcome to the dark side!
Hello, Meg from Chicago. No summer vacay, but I do like to start walking the hour or so home from work once the weather turns.
Kathleen from Edmonton here. First day of summer tradition = continuing my type A personality by making my summer to do list!
Amy here, moderating from The Canada. On the 1st workday I am off, I go for long lunch w/tchr friends from other schools. BEST.
Hello ! Michelle from BC who always goes to her friend's Canada Day party on the first day of summer vacation.
Matt here from Dallas. Just returned from a two week Destin and Disney vacation.
Y’all really don’t do Calendar time anymore?
Tonight's soundtrack is the Original Cast Recording of Hamilton! Planning a trip to NYC to see
Another new hashtag. They just keep coming tonight!
Hello . This is my first year teaching and my first, first day of summer vacation!!
Nope. A million reasons not to. 1st - the calendar is a tool to record & document time, not a counting tool.
I quit the calendar. As a director am now working tirelessly to convince my teachers to get rid of it. https://t.co/hcZNLT3Tih
project submitted for Dash & Dot!! 😍🙏🏻
Great article. Faige retired T from Los Angeles. Just learned my school is rethinking calendar. Excited to see how time is used
I walk with a colleague on a reg. Basis.
we should just go ahead and introduce ahead of time
Yeah your Instagram was on fire! 🔥
Just say no to calendar! I dropped it 3 years ago thanks to
Can I just say that I’m SOOO jealous. Going to have to sell my soul to see it when it gets here this fall.
I feel like, at least once a year, we could/should have a special chat...
We totally LUCKED OUT. How $$$$$ are the Chicago tickets?
Hi all. Barb from Michigan
As a first year teacher I thought calendar was a must do... I guess not?
Not on sale yet, but season tickets sold out LIKETHAT, so I expect pricey. Hoping luck will get me 1 of lottery tix
What do your standards/prog of studies say? That is a good place to start!
Absolutely not! Do what you know is right for your students.
Cant wait to read it. I quit it every January but am totally ready to be a fulltime quitter! https://t.co/VF3BSRlv2O
It’s a lie they tell first year teachers. I thought so to years back as a new teacher.
We lost two sets of tickets before we got ours last night. Sold out in minutes, but regular price.
Go cold turkey, baby. It feels GREAT!
Just want to add, rethinking what we do is always good. Glued to TV watching about Orlando I wrote
https://t.co/GpBCwUSggO
Here is what I did after ditching calendar time. We used the calendar as a tool when needed https://t.co/N2nGOxLqqw
What are some great first day(s)/weeks procedures to go over?
Cutting out calendar would give me back about 20 minutes of instructional time.
I will! I will! Feeling liberated and excited about next year already! https://t.co/UWJde89Ngv
Go cold turkey, baby. It feels GREAT!
I think that about kindercooking and having a class pet too. I. DON'T. HAVE. TO.
I also quit making everyone walk in a line. We walk in a respectful bunch instead :)
Or better yet...PLAY TIME!
Forgot you were calendar quitter too! Adding your blog to growing collection of quitting reasons for my 4s teacher.
Q1: Of the 6 things described in the article (I included "doing calendar), how many are you guilty of? We will not judge!
Preach it ! https://t.co/aC2oHHBvEb
I think that about kindercooking and having a class pet too. I. DON'T. HAVE. TO.
It feels amazing to just dive into the day without the monotonous routine of blah blah blah.
And I agree with letting the calendar go! It is abstract and can be learned later. It is fun to find our own time system.
Beyond the calendar, I feel like I am cutting back on time spent on various whole group activities
Kids have a much easier time with knowing "how many sleeps" - I try to use that in conversation with them when it's relevant.
Back when I was a first year teacher teaching 1st grade I did spelling tests. Thought I had to. Hated it. No one passed anyway!
I'm Dawn. I teach K-5 science in Indy.
A1: I was ALMOST guilty of the vocabulary list activity with my grade 5s this year, but decided against it before I started!
A1 I do "silent reading" aka read to self...but I circulate making sure the students are supported if they are stuck on a word.
A1: I have done: spelling tests, calendar, DEAR (but I'm still not sure DEAR is bad...)
A1#beBrave Calendar and recess my bad. Didn't take away recess but modified the time
Know what else game me extra time- ditching "snack time" Kids ate snack when they were hungry
I have been making word bank posters with Ss to help when writing on topics we are learning about
I might try that next year - thanks for the nudge!
A1: all of them I am fairly certain. showed me the way of the KinderJedi
A1: all of them I am fairly certain. showed me the way of the KinderJedi
A1 Just guilty of calendar. Classroom jobs r so important...kids LOVE the calendar, weather, # days of school jobs...
I feel like DEAR = hanging out w/books. Is "boosting achievement" the only reason to spend time w/books?
I don't think DEAR is bad...it drives much of our class inquiries, actually.
Yes! Did this at the same time as ditching calendar. Parents = horrified. Me = peachy keen. https://t.co/AFGPJAA2qQ
Know what else game me extra time- ditching "snack time" Kids ate snack when they were hungry
I do quiet reading time also but my class is self-contained so I pull small groups and read 1:1 with students during this time.
Well. Especially when they're so little. Grade 6? Different story, MAYBE.
brilliant idea to ditch snack but I do like the social aspect
works great. Kids have to learn handle freedom since they are trained to be managed. Good for that reason also
I do a read aloud, shared reading or shared writing activity while my kids eat snack.
We did Read To Self part of Daily5 Rotation. My kinders loved books so for the most part went well.
It’s funny, I’ve instituted snack center & family style meals at PreK. Parents love it, teachers not so much (yet).
My kids love hanging out with books...we do 10 minutes of noisy, buddy reading & 10 min quiet reading every day.
Sorry I'm late, Cinderella moved out of the castle and I have to do supper duty now! Missed the last 2 weeks due to company
when did you give them this freedom? Certainly not the first day…
Yes...I am all over self-regulation these days!
I coach my teachers not to teach during snack. The social part is really impt.
they can still socialize. Snack was open any time we were in the class. Most ate during work stations, very social
Another thing I ditched: agenda books. My Ss can't read (and won't learn to read in English!) & evrything is online for parents.
My kids love partner reading time. They get excited to share what they've learned with their peers!
Too funny. I know used to do snack as centre too but mine is a free for all and works best for me.
snack in the afternoon up to kids as a choice. In am during outdoor time. Big social time for them
makes perfect sense! https://t.co/ojNppEZN9p
they can still socialize. Snack was open any time we were in the class. Most ate during work stations, very social
I am ditching them again. Got sucked back into that vortex 2 years ago. Back to folders in Sept.
You'll find that they will make their own social groups anyways, converse just the same.
Yup. I did, and some of my tchrs do, snack as a centre. Works like a dream.
oh yes, first day. I can't ask for brave if I am not brave myself. Most ate it all immediately
Same. Mine enjoy ind. reading more as the year progresses and their reading skills develop.
we put the live cameras on from sometimes so kids can watch belugas while they chat and eat at snack
Q2: Which (if any) of the things described in the article are required/expected by your admin/district/board/school?
Me too! They will also forget to eat (my Ss only go half days) but will sure remember the next day...
I kept backup snack for the first 2 weeks. After that they are on their own. They learn to ration or bring extra
I find during the first month or so they are so tired by 1-2pm. Better for them to have easier things in the afternoon
I wish I could ditch my planners. Mandated by the principal.
what if they are hungry before or after that time?
Great for those who show up hungry or are in a growth spurt! https://t.co/AP5IuXx0Re
makes perfect sense! https://t.co/ojNppEZN9p
they can still socialize. Snack was open any time we were in the class. Most ate during work stations, very social
Depends on who provides snack. We provide snack, so it’s all eating/serving same food at dif times
We do that, too! we especially love the Penguin cam.
I also ask parents to let me know if kiddo MUST eat - we have some w/LONG bus rides.
A2 None are expected of me.
I do 5 minutes of "quiet reading",then open it up to quiet reading, writing, drawing. Kids are now writing books
I thought silent reading was a nice way to gather on entry to class/carpet work. Any other ideas? https://t.co/qzVoGgHsh4
Another thing I ditched: agenda books. My Ss can't read (and won't learn to read in English!) & evrything is online for parents.
where is the article you're referring to?
we have been campaigning to ditch them for years, this year was the LAST! (Mine went in trash mid sept. (Shhhhh)
A2: none are required but we need to retrain parents. They get stuck on old models like weekly spelling tests.
A2: The curriculum we use requires 15 min of independent reading time. I modify for my sp.ed. Ss bc they need the support.
A2: we were required to have DEAR time. Otherwise not too much pressure for any others
My Ks have choice of fine motor activities at tables for arrival & first 20 min of day.
Table top toys (manips) on entry--ez to clean up. with ala https://t.co/6w029OFWuE
I thought silent reading was a nice way to gather on entry to class/carpet work. Any other ideas? https://t.co/qzVoGgHsh4
Another thing I ditched: agenda books. My Ss can't read (and won't learn to read in English!) & evrything is online for parents.
A2 We had spelling tests in 2nd grade which my kids loved and did well on
This is where documenting what you ARE DOING comes in. Documenting & conversation w families are my BFFs https://t.co/V85KurQrnz
A2: none are required but we need to retrain parents. They get stuck on old models like weekly spelling tests.
Another thing I ditched: "Criss cross apple sauce". 1) not my teaching language 2) I despise it 3) WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!
A2 Daily 5 rotation but flexible with make up of the group. The other stuff not expected
our admin still expects it all but a lot of us just do what we know is best. They give a "morning routine" 1/2
A2- we do Reggio but I also have to teach my state standards. Haven't figured out how to do both yet
YES so important - we can ditch the old stuff when we show the new stuff is more appropriate.
PLAY is a wonderful way to enter and start the day. https://t.co/u249BdRyr9
I thought silent reading was a nice way to gather on entry to class/carpet work. Any other ideas? https://t.co/qzVoGgHsh4
Another thing I ditched: agenda books. My Ss can't read (and won't learn to read in English!) & evrything is online for parents.
Reggio is a philosophy, not content. Standards are content. It should (in theory) be possible to marry the two!
How about giving choice sit like a mountain, a mermaid or a rock https://t.co/D8BbuRoADx
Another thing I ditched: "Criss cross apple sauce". 1) not my teaching language 2) I despise it 3) WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!
Kdgn T in my bldg does "am work"...aka worksheets!!!!! BOOOOOO HISSSSS
*throwing rotten tomatoes* https://t.co/Kq0ngDjIn5
Kdgn T in my bldg does "am work"...aka worksheets!!!!! BOOOOOO HISSSSS
We start our day with choice time at my old school. Temple school I sub at starts w/responsive classroom morning meeting
Balance is key. Grappled with this for many years. I now pick and choose what's important for the needs of my group.
2/2 handout of expected morning routine items to be done with calendar, most do ELA first, & do them, I start with math in gr 3
I am now forbidden to use worksheets. Took a moment to readjust but now don't miss it! https://t.co/7qey71BYsw
Kdgn T in my bldg does "am work"...aka worksheets!!!!! BOOOOOO HISSSSS
"Sit in a way that you are comfy and others can see" WHAT ELSE MATTERS?
We do explorations for up to an hour on entry.Kids have activities that focus, calm, provide creativity.
We can talk later if you like. Reggio inspired means inquiry, creativity, math & literacy…all the standards can be fit in
Wish it was forbidden at my school. Guess I need to speak up and help her see the light! https://t.co/vlvEfOfAFQ
I am now forbidden to use worksheets. Took a moment to readjust but now don't miss it! https://t.co/7qey71BYsw
Kdgn T in my bldg does "am work"...aka worksheets!!!!! BOOOOOO HISSSSS
former admin. She ordered them just before retiring despite staff having voted against them
My Ss need the structure of a defined snack time & get b-fast, lots of food reinforcers during the day & am snack.
If you need to photocopy more than 12 papers for kindergarten for the year, you're doing it wrong. https://t.co/ntPfPO5RnV
Kdgn T in my bldg does "am work"...aka worksheets!!!!! BOOOOOO HISSSSS
gonna advocate for snack together. It is like a shared meal, something few kids do anymore. Done well, it creates community
A2: none. I do encourage a quiet time after lunch for eating, reading, drawing, writing or resting
Plus my k's are full days, and morning snack is our learning for a lunch loosely monitored
Q3: Are there things in the article that you plan to STOP for the new school year? Are there other things you plan to stop?
This is why we eat family style lunches. Community and sharing/serving food together. Luxuries of preschool.
Yup...what I was thinking, too, but am willing to try it another way. We shall see... https://t.co/kQsEjkjoR1
gonna advocate for snack together. It is like a shared meal, something few kids do anymore. Done well, it creates community
Yes - how do we want to show the value of food and getting together? I prefer eating together and conversation.
and your body is not touching someone else, otherwise I get 1 comfy leaner, uncomfortable leanee
hey joining back in after driving from a meeting 2 school!
You should see the creations my Ss have made with recycled goods in am. They are now documenting their creations.
I feel like I can argue it either way! https://t.co/0EzcDsm7eA
Yup...what I was thinking, too, but am willing to try it another way. We shall see... https://t.co/kQsEjkjoR1
gonna advocate for snack together. It is like a shared meal, something few kids do anymore. Done well, it creates community
Awesome! I’d love to see the documentation.
Snack together is also a great way to teach and practice social skills.
in k I started with choice/work period Montessori style & followed kids' explorations
I agree, ! Communal meals are important. https://t.co/ml466flewa
gonna advocate for snack together. It is like a shared meal, something few kids do anymore. Done well, it creates community
struggle with rigid workshop structures in k We get rdg, wrtg done in more organic ways. Blogging, just a few
I love snack in my room every day. I usually specify graham crackers or goldfish. Time 2 socialize!
I still do snack time. Kids can eat if they are hungry during the day,but they are learning food routines at snack
Ks stay all day & eat together at outside tables. Either lunch from home or lunch parents order from food service.
Will someone please T Q3 4 thanks!
you need the structure or the kids? Like everything I found the more control I gave kids the less support they needed
Oh i totally agree! So was the long gone days of cupcakes for bdays https://t.co/V5k3lkN1g5
Snack together is also a great way to teach and practice social skills.
I need to start taking more photos. Also, my K's are learning that Lego blocks are hard to draw!
definitely stopping spelling tests - despite being required to use a new speller - will work with words & use in writing
I also taught them how to eat buffet style for stupid party days. Communal, tables together, moderation, thanks, toasts
Definitely doing this next year! https://t.co/8fgeEh1PjR
I also taught them how to eat buffet style for stupid party days. Communal, tables together, moderation, thanks, toasts
Giving up calendar cold turkey!!!!! AHHHH!
I used this year to document learning, esp with manipulatives. Awesome results! https://t.co/snEsxvdsfn
I need to start taking more photos. Also, my K's are learning that Lego blocks are hard to draw!
Tell me more about giving up the calendar? For Ss or Ts to give up?
a variety of materials for them to create with, write about, calm down with. I should probably blog about it one day
Coworker would have her Ss make their own dictionary. They spelled a word incorrectly, write it in their dictionary.
Anyhoo, what from the list not gonna do? lucky none are on my list
Okay, , I took some night time cough meds and they’ve hit hard, so I have to run. Stay strong and quit the calendar!
Okay, , I took some night time cough meds and they’ve hit hard, so I have to run. Stay strong and quit the calendar!
Woud love to read and learn more
Lots of talk of it earlier. Abstract. Use cal for a tool...figure out # days until whatever, etc. https://t.co/0DAj0ClBhC
Tell me more about giving up the calendar? For Ss or Ts to give up?
Many of us types have stopped "doing calendar" with our classes. BEST IDEA EVER.
the 1 thing I always resprt back to is taking away recess.... I know not good but.... how do I break this?
What specific vocab are you targeting? All our math we do in small groups, "person of the day" we do separately.
Just stop. Find other consequences. Promise yourself to never do it, and don't.
They can take pics, add voice recording, make video or draw...They learned fast!
Q4: What other things would you add to a list of ?
Buffet style valuable life skill, don't take what you don't like, try a little if you aren't sure, don't lick serving utensils
Woot! Awesome job! I wish more teachers did that! It was all I saw in my bldg. I was the weird one.
I take them during a separate time during the day to write apology picture, visual of an OK Choice for next time, etc.
do it. There are lots of other things to do. Good Calendar was originally a math congress by Mary Baretta-Lortan
Wash hands, don't run around with your food, wipe up your spills. Food etiquette?
So much research out there on the importance of outdoor play. That will be a deterrent. anyone have a handy article
Like this idea! Do you find it causes problems for the next years' teacher if you don't have the same "routine"?
I always ask, do you want to do xyz now or do you want to do it during choice time. hard to enforce. #1 reason I don't like.
A4 nap time although I think it should make a comeback
A4: I don't do rotations on a schedule; Ss can switch stations when they are "done".
I was ridiculed for not making my kids sit that way. I concur!
A4 Interested in other's thoughts on word walls. Outdated? Takes up too much space. Def thinking about making it smaller!
You are a WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE. Mardelle = Google. Mardoogle.
Takes up a lot of inst time & misrepresents actual purpose of calendar. Kids don't need to learn to count by 7s.
I try for restorative justice.Have kids talking to each other with me as mediator. Depends on why recess is being taken
why is nap time gone? These are 5 year olds!
my Ss refer to the word wall when they write. I ask them what words to put on it
I did Must dos/May dos one year. Is your system similar?
We do "rest and relax" for a couple months right after lunch recess. Nice time to chill. https://t.co/XGbQzOqiyo
why is nap time gone? These are 5 year olds!
1 of my K classes have word boxes instead - sorted alphabetically, within kids' reach.
I do a morning message before calendar & community circle. I like this more than calendar. could put a wonder of the day after...
Would love a pic or more info https://t.co/DKO1cI5K6V
1 of my K classes have word boxes instead - sorted alphabetically, within kids' reach.
Hey Sorry I’m so late to the party! Just got back from Maine- my daughter flew out to IL for the summer
A4 Word walls words that generated by Sts. Did that for years as we labeled stuff Ks wanted to write about. Not just off a list
YES!! We do quiet time in September/October and several fall asleep!
Confession: I used to say "criss cross applesauce, Mrs Melva is the boss" DEFINITELY QUIT THAT!
hey thanks for the resource! I can't dind original tweet 2 quote!!
A4: Reading logs. Just as bad as reading prizes. No one needs to log their reading, especially in K.
Recipe-type box w/alphabetical dividers. Cards w/word & image.
Love it. Calendar def took away time from com circle (we call it talking apple) and am msg https://t.co/0EGrXzHeVP
I do a morning message before calendar & community circle. I like this more than calendar. could put a wonder of the day after...
A4: I'd like to see worksheets/workbooks gone in K and severally limited in 1. I think activity/play is such better practice.
I AM GOING TO START SAYING THIS TO MY TEACHERS! Criss cross applesauce, Mme Amy is the boss!
Totally agree Liane. There is no better practice then through playful learning.
I did something similar, too - a calendar we USED the way adults USE calendar. Not to count & pattern https://t.co/oBJjP89MCu
I do morning message and a weather report. The weather report grew out of the Ss interest in our weather.
Hmm No reading logs during the year. Don't k ow if school still does summer reading log for Ks. Curious
Ok, letter of the week. Discuss :)
Weather is super-relevant to kids. Days of week/months of yr, not so much!
New to K Ts these days (in my district) are stuffing workshop and worksheets down the Ss throats! BOO https://t.co/yszxVHZlDe
A4: I'd like to see worksheets/workbooks gone in K and severally limited in 1. I think activity/play is such better practice.
Homework IN THE SUMMER?! Unheard of in The Canada.
maybe I will digitize my calendar.....more wall space! Use calendar like it is meant 2 b used.... https://t.co/wVm4JYRt7i
Would SELL MY SOUL for definitive rsrch on best model/timing to teach letter names & sounds across year.
SO HAPPY we don't do those anymore.
YASSSSSS...esp since K reading is not always book reading...you can read the word! environ. print. https://t.co/YzCRQT1GZY
A4: Reading logs. Just as bad as reading prizes. No one needs to log their reading, especially in K.
loved them when I was in K- do they still have letter people blow ups??
Q5 is a biggie! How can we help ourselves/schools/colleagues let go & move on from ?
2mro is last full day. I'm totally telling the kids about this! They'll love it! https://t.co/iRKmnEWNB7
I AM GOING TO START SAYING THIS TO MY TEACHERS! Criss cross applesauce, Mme Amy is the boss!
We do letters all of the time. Letters cannot be contained to one a week ;)
maybe doing weather would teach K how to decide of they need a jacket 4 recess......
https://t.co/YrxZaP5gVB
Weather is super-relevant to kids. Days of week/months of yr, not so much!
Ts who move to K just don't get it. They water down their workshop and get frustrated. Hmmm wonder why https://t.co/IAtP8cTgTr
Totally agree Liane. There is no better practice then through playful learning.
I do it (she says with head lowered) but tie it to our learning.J and jellyfish last week,r and reindeer in Dec.
No from me! (I promise I don't say no to EVERYTHING...) Doesn't lend itself to needed differentiation! https://t.co/mTWzVlBsIw
Ok, letter of the week. Discuss :)
In all my years teaching K (like over 20…) I have only met 1 or 2 teachers who moved to K from other grades who “got it”
I have done my grandmas suitcase with a letter, lovely, rich learning. And done crap weekly. in the approach
Big hit with Ss this spring was to estimate temps before going to recess am & pm https://t.co/0bfgLTS2JP
Ts who move to K just don't get it. They water down their workshop and get frustrated. Hmmm wonder why https://t.co/IAtP8cTgTr
Totally agree Liane. There is no better practice then through playful learning.
A5 I'm heading back to K after a little break so I'm excited to experiment & just see what works for this group of kids!
I'd love that research too. My brain is so divided on that.
your audit trails are fantastic, and deepen any routine, or tangent, or deep inquiry. So flexible
We are still expected to do letters following a school wide scope & sequence in grade 3 usually 2-3/week (I sorta did it)
precicely. It's the ones who sumersault in their squares I worry about... lol
A5: Model change and offer support when asked. Encourage little steps and don't judge. Talk about own flops but trying again
A5: teachers need to work in an environment with administration that lets them try new things without fear of being reprimanded.
Nothin ramps up a like phonics oui?
YES. We do the name game. AMAZING. Phonics, letter formation, letter names, brilliant.
https://t.co/oiEYDuti3u
We do letters all of the time. Letters cannot be contained to one a week ;)
Would love to know more about this!
A5: Can we help our colleagues move on? Or can we just do the best in our room. Too many times we spend banging our heads
Sts access 2 math &reading apps if they wanted. But reading log required. For Ks 3books Some private schools do
A5 This from goes through my mind each day, "How are we inspiring our students so they inspire us back?"
Touché https://t.co/hj13T87Y8e
A5: teachers need to work in an environment with administration that lets them try new things without fear of being reprimanded.
Haha, you got it! That and grilled cheese. 🍽
A5 take the time to learn something new, give yourself time and permission to change one practice at a time
LOVE snooping in on the conversations tonight. Miss you guys.
LOVE the idea!!!! I ALWAYS check my phone so this would be awesome!!! https://t.co/gKLldjbdrS

Does having happy tears watching my Ks at the aquarium count as inspiring me back? Such amazement with them!
Almost time to wrap up. Feel free to keep adding things to the tag so everyone can see!
it really worked for me.all may dos were fun learning tasks - varied a lot but often literacy or cooperative
blow up letters. Hmm where is when ya need it. I luckily have never seen them
Sitting quiet and in the dark all day
RT : A5 take the time to learn something new, give yourself time and permission to change one practice at a time
I keep thinking what will happen in 6 or so yrs when I retire? MUST show them the way! https://t.co/ejaBGQWR48

Thanks everyone! I have four additional tabs open, so a great chat!
Have to go ! Thanks for the chat. Felt awful for two days but on the mend! Thanks for the chat! Got to go pack!
