Hi! This might not work tonight, but I wanna see if we can make worksheets work with good teaching. https://t.co/M6zcsp915R
Is Q0 going to be "what is a worksheet?" Because I feel like we might need to get that defined to work in the same direction.
Valerie from Atlanta. Looking forward to dissecting this!
The first couple of ?s are the good and the bad of...
And howdy!
Hi Valerie, welcome to the
Hola! Cat, Phx & ready to share!
Hi all! I'm Rebecca, HS English, Dominican Republic. Dropping in because I like trying the impossible :D
Hello! Teresa, MS Literacy Teacher, from NY.
I agree! I think some worksheets are okay--depending on how you define them. https://t.co/Ler2RGnh4W
Is Q0 going to be "what is a worksheet?" Because I feel like we might need to get that defined to work in the same direction.
A1 The good thing about a worksheet: I call it a recording sheet, like during a science lab.
Anne from Lakeland, FL Happy Tuesday everyone :)
Hello, Nikki here from TX. Excited about tonight's chat.
Finally on break! Reading up a storm! Yeah!
Happy Tuesd'y to you, too, Anne!
Gosh, and I've got less than a month left! :(
L Boogie! How's your Summah goin?
Really? When do you go back?
A0: First of all, I'm Annette-5th gr reading teacher from Texas. Thinking sheets are awesome worksheets.
Meredith from Florida joining to learn from all of you
Jay, currently home in Nova Scotia
A-1 Worksheets are great when the kids can help create them and then use them for review!
Coming from WA State, Susan ELA teacher & yes, we can!
A1: I put rubrics on them. The Ss know the expectations up front and can monitor progress.
Preplanning 8/3, kids 8/10. O.o
A1 They... enable non-teacher-dependent work?
A1 Some kiddoes actually like worksheets. Mine love logic problem worksheets!
A1: they're predictable, which can be comforting for some
Agreed! Fold up and stick inside their books.
They R versatile. We can do many things w/ a sheet of paper. I think the name "worksheet" causes issues, much like "homework."
Dan from sunny FL here! At the gym currently so I will attempt to intermittently contribute!
A1 give feedback...keeps lumberjacks in business.
I dig it Dr. J! Don't forget the hashtag, . https://t.co/RlDwXVBtvR
make WS's which are a treasure hunt, kids moving and active...
A1: if you need an at a glance look at something for assessment...
A1 Besides recording data from labs, we use them for open-ended problems. I'll write a prob & ask Ss to solve it 3 diff ways
A1 WS are another way to engage Ss - not everyone loves projects, group work, or discussion.
A1 They're something physical kids can review when studying?
Certainly! They can help scaffold! https://t.co/TRO3IH1wVx
A1: they're predictable, which can be comforting for some
DAN! I never saw you in Denver. Howdy!
A1: we can use them to model a structure we want Ss to use.
Agree! Does the perception change if we call it something else? https://t.co/auIadIcdRa
They R versatile. We can do many things w/ a sheet of paper. I think the name "worksheet" causes issues, much like "homework."
Agreed! Ts shouldn't limit Ss from choosing worksheets if they like them and learn from them.
A1 Ooh! Ooh! I know! They give me a grade to record in the gradebook!
I use tie them into the interactive notebooks. They aren't loose papers
A1: Lol holding my nose and saying, "They provide a place for practice."
so important to share the rubric with students ahead of time!
sorry buddy. I tried to make it happen, but it was definitely a short trip.
Nice! https://t.co/mlRoyOlgsv
A-1 Worksheets are great when the kids can help create them and then use them for review!
. Good reminder; I also include the success criteria (I can...). https://t.co/EY7E6xWUc7
A1: I put rubrics on them. The Ss know the expectations up front and can monitor progress.
there's definitely a time and a place for them. Sometimes they are overused though!
A1 They (can be) low tech. If you have a copier.
A1: they are good in a pinch! Not bad for immediate feedback in a low-tech class.
Not sure. What could we name them?
great to use when playing trashket ball with my students.
That's we do, tape them right in.
Good idea Teresa! https://t.co/OOTmGV5NjG
A1: I put rubrics on them. The Ss know the expectations up front and can monitor progress.
Hey, hey ! Kimberly, Media Specialist from Daytona here!
o saw someone suggest we define worksheet... Not the worst idea.
A1: some Ss need organizers......can help w/ differentiation.
-My goal this year is to create a review folder with Onenote for the kids to use for review from wherever they are.
For the record, I'm here as cheerleader tonight, you are all too fast for me to add ideas!
. Yes. Lots of love for WS going on right now! https://t.co/iCoYHsSff2
A-1 Worksheets are great when the kids can help create them and then use them for review!
A1. They are good if you need some sort of paper evidence.
A1: I like to put QR codes on them. They link to games and online resources. Kinda like a portkey from Harry Potter
Self-study work? Brain Training?
loving the idea of having Ss create them! Definitely learning & reinforcing info as they do so
A1 they make great paper airplanes
A1: Nice to have on hand when the tech/network or whatnot isn't cooperating
A1: I do like some of the graphic organizers. Some of my Ss still liked to write on them to help them understand content
Including QR codes was a breakthrough for me!
Hello, Meagan from East Tennessee. I'm not sure if we can make it work, but you have my attention! https://t.co/tEVLZj0cZJ
Hi! This might not work tonight, but I wanna see if we can make worksheets work with good teaching. https://t.co/M6zcsp915R
A1 Worksheets are alive and well in some adult learning applications.
super cool idea! What program do you use for that?
Mine too! Graphic organizers are fabulous! Really helps with brainstorming.
you can always just jump in where you can! Practice always helps :)
A1: I you don't do them constantly, they're kind of fun... Weirdly
A1 It’s not much of a stretch of one’s imagination to call a worksheet. Both convey understanding.
A1: I can't think of a career that calls the documents they require workers to complete as 'worksheets'. Lets use real lang.
Great backup idea! https://t.co/GjuPNcAlO9
A1: Nice to have on hand when the tech/network or whatnot isn't cooperating
I love QR codes! They've taken my worksheets to the next level as well.
I appreciate worksheets but just not all the time. No single resource should be used as the only solution
good point.. Do you have a suggestion for an alternative??
A1(contd) Sometimes, filling something out is strangely satisfying.
A2. When they are used to keep kids busy!
A1 Results - They aren't complete villians! Life is not made up solely of binary choices.
You could also augment the pages to add a lIttle umph to an otherwise dry activity...Add a reinforcement video in math example
A2. Busy work - if a Ss can complete it they should move onto the next skill rather than repeat.
I wonder if WS, like memorization or direct instruction, have a bad wrap because there's always a new fad in education.
A1: they prepare Ss for many apps or online form based tasks "innovative" educators give them
A2: better define what the "work" of the sheet is. If I complete something just to have it "checked off," it's a bummer.
It can be low-level thinking.
Well, coloring books have made a comeback. Those used to get a bad name too. Give worksheets some time. :-)
Okay, graphic organizer worksheets as a strategy for helping student inquiry could be a positive.
A2: Too much going on! Need to keep it simple and uncluttered. Provide space.
Ah, the ol' education pendulum! Good point!
A2: Overuse is the biggest issues. It's all about balance.
the binders have been mocked, but have come through many times!
is now trending in USA, ranking 45
I think with education we tend to throw the baby out with the bath water. ALL worksheets aren't bad. We need to be discerning.
A2: Time fillers, for remediation, for enrichment, as a substitute for teaching or engaging with students.
I love that your students write on the organizers--take initiative. Perfect active learning!!!
A1: They can be used as quick reviews and to use with the class while having individual conferences.
A2 If it's just a bunch of multiple choice it's a waste. Guessing game
Great point Mixing it up and purposeful use are important things to remember. https://t.co/ZwSqyfDJVg
I appreciate worksheets but just not all the time. No single resource should be used as the only solution
A2 When I was a kid, so many could be figured out if you knew two correct answers.
A2 Autonomy and choice. Worksheets don't usually allow for much.
A2) when it's the ONLY tool in your toolbox, there is a problem. Busy work doesn't stimulate anyone. Plus, millions of copies👎
If you can answer the worksheet question in less than 140 characters it may not be true learning
A2: lack of innovation & evolution. If they're the same ones you used in your first year...
repost :-) make WS's which are a treasure hunt, kids moving and active...
A2. If I don't understand what to do how will I feel with many others in the class politely filling it in while I struggle?
A2 They can be dated. I saw one with a phone booth. What? 😜
A2 Same problem as most homework: designed so that kids who get it practice for no reason, but kids who don't get it are stuck
A2 Students get bored quickly with worksheets, or they are welcomed because they are familiar and safe!
Hey, we said the almost the same thing at the same time! https://t.co/1z13GIMn8N
A2 If it's just a bunch of multiple choice it's a waste. Guessing game
A2(contd) if a sheet is "wrong" because two students provided the same answer...is it a good worksheet?
Ss loved them for our nutrition unit. Help break down foods into groups and connect the dots for meal selection
Totally agree! Open ended--organizational--they can work! https://t.co/pdlNIamxri
A2 If it's just a bunch of multiple choice it's a waste. Guessing game
A2: Too much wasted paper. If I can use mini whiteboards, I do. Or those plastic covers so I only print a few sheets. Ss share
A2: if they do not support higher level thinking
A2 over used. We can find creative ways to teach- hands on.
A2. What needs to go? lack of purpose; I ask myself "What's the goal?" for all activities/strategies.
A2: a They are often one size fits all and are often written on a lower, simple recall level
A2 They encourage students to just play the school game, get the right answer, finish the assignment rather than actually LEARN
I allow my students to use sketchnotes, lists, short statements, etc. in cornell notes to help with understanding.
Remember when we were kids, and our teachers had folders for each month with ditto papers to copy?
Can you not offer several versions of a worksheet to afford choice? https://t.co/82DK5XzHYI
A2 Autonomy and choice. Worksheets don't usually allow for much.
A2: how many of them come from the bought unit? Not teacher created or specific, just a mass marketed eduproduct?
Bingo! https://t.co/H0NWRcqBx8
A2 Same problem as most homework: designed so that kids who get it practice for no reason, but kids who don't get it are stuck
A2 Personally, I have fond memories of [some] worksheets. They’d be *amazing* if they were authentic [applied to my life] and..
A2: if they do NOT allow for collaboration and conversation, Ss should be talking
A2b Worksheets should be done at work (or school) not at home.
The answers tonight are brilliant!
Like the ones made with the ditto machine. Check your hands! Ha! I'm not that old. 🤓😬 https://t.co/nax3K8DPVQ
A2: lack of innovation & evolution. If they're the same ones you used in your first year...
A-2 We need to make the "busy work" feel of them go away. Students need connection to their work, a drudgery.
That , he's so smart! Glad he's in my ! https://t.co/2HqE8f1j0E
A2(contd) if a sheet is "wrong" because two students provided the same answer...is it a good worksheet?
may be a time and a place for worksheets but I wouldn't run around saying how innovative they are ... Even if I digitized them
Such a great point! https://t.co/7tJBSDolOE
A2. If I don't understand what to do how will I feel with many others in the class politely filling it in while I struggle?
how many (%?) use sketch notes?
Definitely. Worksheets can be designed to promote rigor on different levels.
that simple, huh? What a fantastic idea. Thanks for sharing it!!
A2. What if .... this conversation about worksheets causes some to pause and reflect on how they make Ss feel? Value?
A2c To clarify: Lose worksheets that ask stuff like.. “2 trains leave Sheboygan, WI for LA. Train A travels at 35 mph..”
Not much authentic choice. By the time you duplicate all that work you could have designed a better task
I liked to smell 'em, and feel how cold they were when the teacher brought 'em back!
A2: if they are the same tasks year after year after year after year.........
Whomever is the power-that-be in the room should encourage .. I like ‘em after-the-fact
Used in many places as calming therapy.
agreed! Many great ideas being shared. The power of Twitter is amazing.
I had a friend who sent kids pdfs to mark up and send back. iPad as worksheet. Blah. https://t.co/4MU1IEzGBb
may be a time and a place for worksheets but I wouldn't run around saying how innovative they are ... Even if I digitized them
So, what if my worksheet asks kids to create their own problems or design something?
I like when Ss complete individually & then turn-n-talk; I want them to have their ideas/evidence first https://t.co/vqXVsLJsbz
A2: if they do NOT allow for collaboration and conversation, Ss should be talking
A2: Ts need to know why they are using them as a resource. What does it bring to the lesson, can it be achieved in another way?
one of our team members uses mandala coloring pages in the "cool down corner" of her classroom :)
A2. Will the Ss smile broadly and be excited about the worksheet? How does it make them feel? https://t.co/6pcPNQdg1v
LOVE this. https://t.co/ft9rtyIORU
So, what if my worksheet asks kids to create their own problems or design something?
Maybe we need exposure to more dynamic worksheets. They do exist.
How many of us receive worksheets or paper copies of articles to read in meetings?
uh oh! someone said the magic word 😜😍
Yes! A place for your ideas first, and perhaps reflection post convo!
A3. Have Ss electronically created their own questions, have peers work through multi-step answers and help each other learn
I loved the fresh from the ditto machine smell. Mmmm https://t.co/IVsv5eL9G6
Remember when we were kids, and our teachers had folders for each month with ditto papers to copy?
Right?
Our admins need to lead on this!
A3. Let students design & use as graphic organizers...
A3. I like the idea of kids creating the questions.
A3 When I have to make them, I make them I do-we do-you do, so that the resources to succeed are right there on the page
A3: variety. Make them but one of your tools!
And how many of us then actually do/read them?
The best worksheets are from Tin Man Press. My littles start to make their own. K-12 & adults love them. https://t.co/UDIaD32KPe
A3a In 1969 my class took a field trip to Knotts Berry Farm. The price of admission was filling out a worksheet.
A3: worksheets, like tests, pulled off internet will rarely meet the needs of a specific T and S. Busy work.
A3 I'm hearing having worksheets as guidelines rather than busy work...
A3: ummmmm.......... not sure about that one...... I consider them a very small part of teaching.....
If it requires deep thinking, >1 right answer & challenges students to create is it still a worksheet? https://t.co/kIMcMpJ66B
also, Hi. Just stumbled across this.
A3b That long ago worksheet was memorable. But not in a good way. Valuable worksheets get pressed into diaries like roses..
A3: To think about why they are the right teaching resource for that particular lesson. What learning outcome will. It achieve?
YIKES! That's awful, but then again, I see similar things happening today.
A2: Excepted answers... For how long are we tying memory to intelligence?
are we rolling handouts into worksheets here?
A3: real application. What are we having students demonstrate? Perhaps applications 4 college?
A3: Have them create collaborative learning experiences. Not use it as a spoon feeding tool.
. Great idea for bringing worksheets into the 21st-century https://t.co/FRENLs5Hxs
A3. Have Ss electronically created their own questions, have peers work through multi-step answers and help each other learn
I have done it both ways. Sometimes I like them to collaborate from the start...other times independent. :)
. YES! Ss could even complete self-evals and set goals for their learning.
I think it's still authentic choice depending on the design of the worksheet.
A3 I use worksheets only when a competent instructor is not available and guided practice is needed. Like low-tech flipping?
A3c Best ever worksheet? Summer of 1973, Mr. McHugh’s US History class at good ol’ Colton High.. to teach us about unions..
The struggle is always going to be that the benefit of 20 minutes of reading >>> 20 minutes of worksheet
I dunno - if there's spots with directions lines for answers, maybe....
A3: many edtech things are just worksheets with game elements & animation... We can do better.
if it's relevant, use it...sometimes there needs to be tangible proof of understanding. https://t.co/979qz1vL1b
A3a In 1969 my class took a field trip to Knotts Berry Farm. The price of admission was filling out a worksheet.
I like the points being made about busy work. Technology can easily become 21st century busy work and lack S engagement.
A3d Teacher had a stack of connect-the-dots sheets a foot high. Assembly-line like we connected assigned dots. Quickly..
A3.If learning involves relationships and Ts pass out ws that Ss don't learn from where is the wisdome? https://t.co/MJK7uLWl1R
A3 Some great ideas have been mentioned!
I'm more likely to then, but if a good project is happening, they're def. less necessary.
If we give a poem or article to annotate and respond to, is it a worksheet?
yeah, these things aren't actually "worksheets"
A3e Management wanted us done quicker. The Man fired some students & poor souls left had to take on more work. I got why unions
even job applications, tax forms. Balancing financial accounts would be more real-world
A3: Focus on the real world. Dynamic worksheets don't have problems with one answer. They require rubrics.
Only if the response is pre-written comprehension questions about the poem with one right answer.
A3x Moral of the tweet: Make memorable worksheets that mimic a real world situation. Learn by doing something real.
A3: Are we solving problems, Real life, challenge or support, skills developed, communication?
I have no idea where you are in the but it is a beautiful topic!Use them as a curating learning tool
Meme is not true. There are students who like worksheets.
Curious. Maybe we all have different definitions as to what constitutes a worksheet?
Yep! And kiddoes generally like these! https://t.co/VhPaLaMQjA
A3x Moral of the tweet: Make memorable worksheets that mimic a real world situation. Learn by doing something real.
I knew the answer. Just throwing things out there.
It's funny, there are diff people each week, and yet, I'm always pleased by how great the answers are when we collab on the
We must make sure this doesn't happen. Technology can be a tool for creativity or conformity. https://t.co/YAC18wJY56
I like the points being made about busy work. Technology can easily become 21st century busy work and lack S engagement.
Great point - I'm tired of 1:1 (& tech, in general) being touted as the saviour for education. https://t.co/P89qsX9jVW
I like the points being made about busy work. Technology can easily become 21st century busy work and lack S engagement.
Yes! https://t.co/AefVt9mwgJ
I have no idea where you are in the but it is a beautiful topic!Use them as a curating learning tool
We don't rely on one methodology in our classrooms, do we? Everything in moderation--even worksheets.
Enjoy, thanks for hanging out with us!
A4: Just making sure they are not replacing learning time. Worksheets should be enhancing the learning experience for Ss
Sorry, have to disagree with the "poster." Ss can be invested in dynamically-designed worksheets.
A-4 I believe yes, but not instantly. This is one of those things to chew on to create the standard.
A4. thinking... maybe thinking maps?
Worksheets were always something. I made myself to help kids show l learning in 1 place, usually a few different aspects to them
A4: I don't know about a template, but I think if used they should scaffold from recall to evaluation and analysis activities
A4. The annotation idea then coupled with a way for kids to get creative with what they have read/learned would be awesome.
A4 Pull out your best worksheet. Let students have at it. Next, ask ‘em what would have made da worksheet rock. Rinse. Repeat.
A worksheet is a great way to get student engaged and measure a connection with content especially when created by teacher
Agree!@Route22Edu Some of my kiddoes love them. I use them sparingly but they get excited!
. We need to add more outdoor edu into the mix as well. Ss in front of computers all day is NOT the answer.
A4: Meet a need. Allow for individual though & response. Include reflection.
A4: Mine are so individualized to my learners! I don't know......
FAFSA forms? I would have loved to have had more instruction on those...
Nice idea. Ss like having input & they often have great insight. https://t.co/R2oG3g8rFl
A4 Pull out your best worksheet. Let students have at it. Next, ask ‘em what would have made da worksheet rock. Rinse. Repeat.
A4 Worksheets that help students capture, organize, analyze their own inquiry = permissible.
Er, so "graphic organizers" then.
Agreed! We all need to be outside more.
Worksheets with error analysis are higher level. Mary solved this problem. Is it correct? Why or why not. Is that a worksheet?
A4 a great worksheet comes from being paired with a great activity
Preach! https://t.co/QxhfXq8aQs
. We need to add more outdoor edu into the mix as well. Ss in front of computers all day is NOT the answer.
wondering if this worksheet chat group has ever seen a ?
Sorry folks, I need to go--the kitchen is calling me...Have a wonderful night, I'll read later. Thanks
A4: Worksheets are not the problem, it's the poor planning behind it. More is not always better; are we in the drill/kill era?
A4: Not sure a template would work because it leads to limitations. Maybe let Ss design sheets based on their learning?
Whiteboards...or even better yet, if possible, have the kids write on the desk. They love it!
I think there are MANY definitions of what we do/don't consider a worksheet.
Yasssss! Yasssss! Yasssss!
https://t.co/3NC68eDt6d
A4 a great worksheet comes from being paired with a great activity
A4: Graphic org. type things can be repeated and used as a structure for processes. Familiarity is a good thing.
An outdoor scavenger hunt. Is that a worksheet? A mapping activity outside? Worksheet?
creating a resume another good option
. We should add doctor office paperwork, car/house loan applications, & rental agreements. https://t.co/mS3pWcZi8J
even job applications, tax forms. Balancing financial accounts would be more real-world
I use this as my guideline when create a wkst.If it is low level it's a wksht.If it's high-level,it's a think sheet
A4 I think relevance, user choice, and adaptability are key. If not, you're not scratching the deeper itches of learning.
. makes a good point - it goes back to the purpose/goal. Like any strategy or instruction. https://t.co/ZBCYIGUFu0
A4: Worksheets are not the problem, it's the poor planning behind it. More is not always better; are we in the drill/kill era?
Could take outside. Challenging, but doable.
Yes! True! It's not the worksheet itself. It's the design, the content the INTENT that needs addressed. https://t.co/ic6ZHWwZbg
A4: Worksheets are not the problem, it's the poor planning behind it. More is not always better; are we in the drill/kill era?
A4 30 students hand in identical worksheets = You wasted everybody's time.
A4. I like the idea shared about job applications. HS Ss need 2 understand "Legible" blue or black ink requirements
we do, I think need to consider that some elements of ed. require Ss to be experienced with WS type stuff like mult. choice.
Depends on Ts perception. I would consider those dynamic worksheets, but another T may have a different view
Just rename them recording sheets or whatever fits your lesson. The worksheet has a bad rap https://t.co/FbaJhbkXp5
An outdoor scavenger hunt. Is that a worksheet? A mapping activity outside? Worksheet?
A4: Could we use blooms taxonomy as a start? Verbs help a lot.
This. https://t.co/hNEui92tlx
A4 I think relevance, user choice, and adaptability are key. If not, you're not scratching the deeper itches of learning.
A1 I use worksheets to help my Ss prove their answers to me & explain their thinking through https://t.co/Z9FWk4cPNx
. I agree! Sounds like there's lots of great learning going on all using WS.
A5. I like review that the kids create.
Let's be honest: worksheets are mostly about helping teacher manage S's behavior by focusing their attention & keeping busy.
I thought we left that era.
Seeing a lot of agreement that wkshts got a bad wrap from the T you see at copy machine every Monday with a binder full 4 wk
Personalization makes it realer (not more real, realer, doggone it). https://t.co/P3bKcPNL1R
A5. I like review that the kids create.
I planned outdoor activities w/worksheets 4 my math classes all the time. Worked well.
A5 Maybe if Worksheet 2.0 is like a work-beside version of a classroom chart? For kids who need that extra help transitioning?
If only! The struggle is still real!
It's tricky. System exists we need to prep 'em even if we disagree!
Agree, specially the teacher that has to go behind checking each of them; for what again?
A5 combine with a physical tool like hot wheels or making projects
Shhhhhh. We can't let them know... :-)
Problem of integrity exists when we pretend worksheets are primarily about learning.
. I respectfully disagree. e.g., WS allow Ss docu. their thinking before discussion. https://t.co/OzKirPDaxk
Let's be honest: worksheets are mostly about helping teacher manage S's behavior by focusing their attention & keeping busy.
Ugh, why do you have to be right on this?
Good thinking behind that answer. Cute cartoon also!
If that's how they are used, it is not a best practice. That's not how I use them, however.
A5 a type of workshop could be a project log. Use as exit ticket and a measure of growth
is killing it tonight with authentic learning structures.
A4 2-3 questions per sheet to show thinking. Great idea to pull great minds together. Let's do this! https://t.co/diUaJ2vMJQ
Great chat....nice to meet you at ISTE I need to run, everyone have a good evening
A5: more holistic. Perhaps akin to 's SketchNoting. Interpretive bases on Ss experience
Ha!feel like Ts are using things like teacher pay teacher as a scapegoat... But I printed them online 😩 https://t.co/Ttw8Rde7VL
Shhhhhh. We can't let them know... :-)
I love when I see the letter A on a sheet and a kinder T making copies for the entire gr level. https://t.co/bWgiqXsRAu
Seeing a lot of agreement that wkshts got a bad wrap from the T you see at copy machine every Monday with a binder full 4 wk
So. Many. . Thank you for helping me plan for the new school year.
Not happy about it. It's about the balance. When we're told we don't prep Ss for postsecondary it's this.
Agreed, and thanks for coming tonight, Shana!
Can u link to example of this type of ws? https://t.co/kSwSJaoX2E
. I respectfully disagree. e.g., WS allow Ss docu. their thinking before discussion. https://t.co/OzKirPDaxk
Let's be honest: worksheets are mostly about helping teacher manage S's behavior by focusing their attention & keeping busy.
I would rather give a kid a blank piece of paper anyway! 😂 possibility https://t.co/nJWj7jVD2O
A5: more holistic. Perhaps akin to 's SketchNoting. Interpretive bases on Ss experience
the main thing is that a worksheet doesn't have to be an actual worksheet. Just a guide to the process
Can u link to example of ur types of ws that are best practice?
I love saying, "Make me a poster, a paragraph, or an audio recording explaining ________."
Happening now: engage with us and benefit from other !
These poor Kinders take home a STACK of hw wrkshts every night! Poor babies!Write in sand, shaving cr, https://t.co/LbOZHNsIK8
I love when I see the letter A on a sheet and a kinder T making copies for the entire gr level. https://t.co/bWgiqXsRAu
Seeing a lot of agreement that wkshts got a bad wrap from the T you see at copy machine every Monday with a binder full 4 wk
A5 Age and motivation has a lot to do with whether a worksheet works. Does the kid want to learn or just get stupid HW done?
I think the biggest bit of bathwater to throw out (while keepin' the baby) is multiple choice answer keyable worksheets.
Or take a paintbrush outside with water and "paint" your letters, name, etc.
A5 a new and improved way of note taking for the new generation. No more TXT talking. Grammar is key! https://t.co/VUxVyy0ktc
I think there is a deeper issue than using worksheets. We need to understand why Ts use them so readily to change the habit.
Or take Mommy's phone and take pictures of words that have the letter in it :D
Agree! Now write up our proposal on a worksheet. https://t.co/7GDrCUKswS
I think the biggest bit of bathwater to throw out (while keepin' the baby) is multiple choice answer keyable worksheets.
Q6 So what do you think? Did this work? Does it need more work? Nice try, at least? Interesting fail? https://t.co/7fThGnUN1l
We're overwhelmed, overscheduled, and overtired sometimes, no?
Anything outsourced, i.e printed worksheets are just the starting point - how it is used and why is where Ts come in
Uh, sometimes the old idea of a wkst is just fine b/c the T needs a quick formative assessment.Let the kids know what U R doing
(1/3) Example: So, instead of Ss doing 20 volume of rectangular prism problems, ask Ss to bring in boxes.
Agree for the most part but testing now seems to be a genre for some schools. Ss can practice the format.
Possibilities are endless!Same thing with math.Just bc a pghas 5 probs doesn't mean make 3 more pgs. https://t.co/9xBT6Yaq4L
Or take a paintbrush outside with water and "paint" your letters, name, etc.
My real problem with worksheets is the "Who's doing the work?" question. Any valuable learning is going to be kid work.
Any question that does not reveal an individual's own thoughts is not really worth asking. https://t.co/GnUK5QK0mf
I think the biggest bit of bathwater to throw out (while keepin' the baby) is multiple choice answer keyable worksheets.
To begin with...but I like text speech, Kids need 2b able to code switch for different audiences.
A5: Ss take notes, jot down ?s, doodle concepts, add friends comments, graphic organizers, space to add on
I feel like I have a better framework to build off of after tonight!
(2/3) Mix boxes up. The worksheet asks students to find dimensions and volumes of 4 boxes. Discuss results.
good point. They need to be versatile. Bilingual! :)
A6 I think we did a fantastic job of showing how, when intentional, the worksheet can be used within a great lesson
Sure! Likely! So how do we support Ts so that they are not these things and a worksheet isn't a crutch.
(3/3) Extend further by asking Ss to design box on worksheet with a certain volume or to fit an object.
Let's have a generation of polylingual kids, Spanish, Chinese, Textin', English, Dog, etc!
A6. I think we need to be more judicious in how/why they are used.
Too much of a thing can be bad... Moderation is always the key. 🤓
A6 Death to worksheets.
Up with authentic tasks.
Graphic organizers can stay, too.
I have to disagree with the moderation theory. Arsenic and spiders are not welcome in my class even in moderation
If we are willing to expand our thinking worksheet purpose and work together to design dynamic worksheets, we're good.
That's all, you know I love you, right? I didn't tell you that last week. Hey, what about next week? https://t.co/GSs7obavGB
And worksheets as traditionally assigned do have a documented negative effect on student growth
Their investigation is ruled by your ws. It is behavior control. Tightly managed by T. No freedom.
Only if they are overused.
Thought you were joking when I saw this chat advertised. ;) Well done sir!
Let's rip apart homework next week!
Thanks! and I were joking when we came up with it last wk, I'm really pleased at the ideas tonight!
Yep. I claim it all day and all year long. It's effective and produces 100% engagement with student ownership.
Thank you. This is my first . Perfect timing while my chicken enchiladas were in the oven! https://t.co/CiRix1Qlaq

Thanks everyone! Have a great evening!
Every worksheet we assign is taking the place of a task that's documented to have a stronger benefit.
Ha! You know I'm a advocate as well. Let's do this.
I'm so glad you came! Come back again!
Thanks for chat! Very interesting topic!
Hey Kim, are you doin' Live Oak or Melbourne for ?
