Welcome to #ATchat. Tonight, let's talk about changing mindsets, specifically as it relates to helping educators use technology for more than reward and reinforcement.
  • wernedat Dec 5 @ 8:02 PM EST
Glad to be here for a bit...Elisa from Florida, where even I am under a freeze warning tonight. #ATchat

First question coming up in a minute. #ATchat
  • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:05 PM EST
Q1: #ATchat - iPads are often the reward for earning points with behavior charts. Is the use of technology for reward and reinforcement only something you see in your district? Do you see this as an issue?
  • wernedat Dec 5 @ 8:05 PM EST
Very curious, as our district seems to be into the two device system, one for work and/or communication and one for reinforcement. Twice the devices to manage for me, yay! #ATchat
    In reply to @KarenJan, @JudithSchoonov1
  • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:06 PM EST
How do they differentiate? Does that ever get confusing for students? #ATchat
    In reply to @wernedat, @JudithSchoonov1
  • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1 - I'm in several districts and see this often. I see it as an issue as it prevents students from using the powerful features and apps that promote success and independence #ATchat
    • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:05 PM EST
Q1: #ATchat - iPads are often the reward for earning points with behavior charts. Is the use of technology for reward and reinforcement only something you see in your district? Do you see this as an issue?
  • wernedat Dec 5 @ 8:08 PM EST
Sometimes different color cases, backgrounds and what they have access to. Sometimes it is by sizes iPad versus iPod. But I agree confusing #ATchat

  • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:09 PM EST
Well we have the northernmost and southernmost east coast states in the house tonight - Maine and Florida are represented! #ATchat

  • jconradslp Dec 5 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: depends on classroom or school culture, but I see it used for writing, reading, communication, art, and leisure etc #ATchat
  • GeriB321 Dec 5 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1. The entire world is using technology for entertainment but we are asking our students to restrict themselves?#ATchat
  • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:11 PM EST
Welcome! So in your district, the iPads are not limited to reward and reinforcement only for students with cognitive challenges. That is great! #ATchat
    In reply to @jconradslp
  • wernedat Dec 5 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1 Definitely kids earn iPad time and/or can she choose it as their reinforcement which is sometimes good and sometimes sends us down a rabbit hole #ATchat

  • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:12 PM EST
Q2. #ATchat - What are the problems or benefits of using technology for reward and reinforcement only?
  • MaryannFuduric Dec 5 @ 8:12 PM EST
    Gah! Out of practice! #atchat
    In reply to @KarenJan, @hillarygfphdatp
  • RupeBrenna Dec 5 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: iPads have many educational features and we should work to make good use of all of them. Using them as a reward is not a problem unless it means it limits the use of the other learning features. #atchat
  • hillarygfphdatp Dec 5 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1. It’s a continuum. Coaching has been helpful around intentional use. If they are rewards, the apps are educationally game based for skill reinforcement. Choices and options help. #ATchat
  • JudithSchoonov1 Dec 5 @ 8:12 PM EST
A-1 Depends on the environment. Some classrooms manage well, and some don’t. I have some students who refuse to communicate b/c they are so tuned into the recreational aspect of the tablets. For school provided comm devices, we lock them down. #ATchat
    In reply to @KarenJan
  • BellEM1119 Dec 5 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: I think that it could potentially be an issue because it should not distract students from learning, but rather enhance it. If the iPad distracts students, even if it is for a reward, it is an issue. #ATchat
    • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:05 PM EST
Q1: #ATchat - iPads are often the reward for earning points with behavior charts. Is the use of technology for reward and reinforcement only something you see in your district? Do you see this as an issue?

A2 - Limits the possibilities and limits students to the tools teachers are more comfortable using. #ATchat
  • hillarygfphdatp Dec 5 @ 8:14 PM EST
I would go back to the question. What’s the PURPOSE of having this tool in place? #ATChat
    In reply to @RupeBrenna
  • jconradslp Dec 5 @ 8:14 PM EST
Oops, I didn't introduce myself! Jessica from Indiana, supporting all Indiana districts! Definitely a wide variety of practice across the state, but I don't see tablet tech being a "reward only" device often #ATchat

As always, what is it the students needs to do and what materials are teachers offering? If they are considering iPads as reward only, they are limiting students' choices and options. There are so many great apps for learning and instruction! #ATchat

  • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:18 PM EST
Use of Guided Access feature is necessary for some students especially if they are choosing not to use the iPad as their voice. Different issue, right?
#ATchat

I see it more as student being assigned the tech but falls to way side to be used as a reward. #atchat
    In reply to @KarenJan, @hillarygfphdatp, @RupeBrenna
  • san_cz Dec 5 @ 8:19 PM EST
I agree, varies in classrooms on how they are being used. I think we need to look at other tools for reinforcement as well. The iPad may not always be available. #atchat

  • wernedat Dec 5 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2 Usually what happens is a Ss ismway more text savvy than the Tt or para and they find a way around protections put in place, navigate out of Guided Access, or memorize the password-then they just go wherever they want instead of staying in the reward or reinforcement #ATchat

A3 - the obstacles I see are teachers don't know what they don't know. They don't think about how the technology can support student learning and tap into their strengths. #ATchat
  • san_cz Dec 5 @ 8:26 PM EST
I think we need to teach Ss to be good digital citizens, be self directed learners, & independent thinkers. Life is about choices and I think we need to work towards making them responsible to stay in the app as we can’t lock everything down all the time. #atchat

When I was stuck in this situation it was b/c the apps I had didn’t match the goals I needed to work on. District kept buying me more closed topic apps that perpetuated the problem. #ATChat

  • san_cz Dec 5 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3 I think time and training is always a factor. Promoting independence is important and looking at the short term and long term goals for the Ss is important. #ATchat

Staff knowledge, creativity, and trust. There is nothing special about the iPad unless it's in the right hands. Can staff try new apps quickly, or do they have to wait a month? Are the tech educators being utilized to their full potential? #ATchat

Q3: #ATchat What are the obstacles to the use of technology beyond reward, especially for students with cognitive challenges?
  • wernedat Dec 5 @ 8:31 PM EST
A3 Doing a “good” reinforcement inventory that doesn’t only come up with edibles...I’ve worked really hard to find other reinforcers that are non-technology based in a lot of ways to move it towards social interaction with a favorite person or doing a favorite task or job #ATchat

A4 - I'm finding teachers really like Clicker Apps, Tarheel Reader, Book Creator and Pictello. So many possibilities to demonstrate learning and for access to a modified curriculum. #ATchat

  • KarenJan - Moderator Dec 5 @ 8:34 PM EST
I recently evaluated two different students who are autistic. The teams watched the evaluation using iPad apps and were surprised by the students' response and performance. We are limiting our students when we don't offer the tech which supports learning and independence. #ATchat
