A1: Anyone follow the @Thetututeacher she had a great post about diversity. She said, "it's representation of ALL races equally" & some other awesome stuff I can't remember π #dojochat
A1 Accepting of all people, regardless of their race, culture, or religion etc. etc. it's all about being you and loving others for being themselves #dojochat
A1: Diversity means an differences--ethnic, academic, socioeconomic, age, gender. It's what brings life into a classroom (and our day to day). #dojochat
A1: Diversity means being human with different wants, needs, desires, likes, dislikes, and the list goes on. Diversity means different in some ways, yet alike in so many of the important things. #dojochat
Q2: adapting and making changes to make all students, families, and colleagues feel welcomed. Little nods like books that represent the faces in your room...or making changes for students with needs #dojochat
A2: Making sure you have culturally responsive practices. All Ss have diff background knowledge, we can never assume. Explain everything & listen to all Ss! #dojochat
A2 I always found it hard to distinguish diversity and inclusivity, but when you get down to it, it's about making sure everyone, every diverse being in your classroom community has fair access... (insert that fence image here) #dojochat
A2: Inclusivity means embracing diversity. Discussing and appreciating the unique qualities of the individual to build community, trust, and relationships. #dojochat
A2: Inclusivity: Not excluding because of race, gender, learning style etc. It also should mean not being afraid to learn new things about others. However, inclusivity is meeting different needs in different ways. #dojochat
A2: Inclusivity means having representation in your classroom of all cultures. Ex. diverse books. Thanks to @Scholastic & teacher bloggers I'm expanding my library. #dojochat
A2: inclusivity is making sure that you are welcoming of all the differences of you students. disability, culture, language, etc. should all be recognized and the teacher should have strategies to incorporate students no matter their background. #dojochat
A3 Having a diverse classroom library, posting images/posters with a variety of individuals from different cultures and backgrounds are two that I ALWAYS try to do π€ #dojochat
Q3: big one for me! I teach in a Jewish day school. My Ss live in a cultural bubble so I work SO hard on having them learn about and respect all the cultures that make up our world #dojochat
Q3: big one for me! I teach in a Jewish day school. My Ss live in a cultural bubble so I work SO hard on having them learn about and respect all the cultures that make up our world #dojochat
A3: I think cultural sensitivity develops through respectful peer interactions. Students need to be exposed to new cultures, communicate about what makes it unique, and develop connections through their own experiences to their new learning. Exposure is key. #dojochat
A3: I will be honest that is very hard in my school. My classroom has to learn about diversity of cultures through books and world studies. We live in a not so very diverse part of the nation. #dojochat
Q3.2: my students have Hebrew names and often joke about names - we talk about how they'd feel if someone mispronounced their name and laughed about it...that often hits it home #dojochat

A3: Get kids talking! the more they talk the more they find they have in common and the more they (and you) can learn about your differences and accept them. #dojochat
I think it's extremely important to note "who might otherwise be excluded." Far too often we make a point to be inclusive of who is in front of us, but don't always think about who is not. #dojochat
A3: Have some real talk. Let them ask questions. Facilitate a discussion. My Ss come from all different cultures. We talk about it. Why does her mom wear a Hijab? Why do you talk differently? Ks are curious and addressing curiosity is how we build understanding #dojochat
We have the future in our hands....the weight of responsibility weighs heavily on me to make sure I am educating a well rounded respectful future! #dojochat

A3: For starters, taking the time to learn how to pronounce the names of each of your students correctly, as well as modeling the correct pronunciation for the entire class. #dojochat
#dojochat I have experienced this with my students with disabilities, inclusivity should be for all and some Gen ed. teachers forget that when it comes to students with behavioral or learning disabilities.
A5 Chapter book called "Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607" tells the story of the Jamestown settlers & their interactions with the natives. Very eye opening! #dojochat
Hi Tammi! Have you thought about a pen pal relationship? Or skype? I know the Peace corps tries to set up connections between their volunteers classrooms/communities and schools in the states. #dojochat
Q3: I try to introduce cultures that are underrepresented in history within our learning, whether it is doing a book study on The Watsonβs Go to Birmingham or using I am Malala as a read aloud. #Dojochat

I completely understand how that can be an issue. My school is extremely diverse and we employ inclusion strategies for instruction. All support pushes in. What is the protocol at your school? #dojochat
A4: I really enjoy reading "If the world were a village." It's an amazing book that teaches empathy, sustainability, and inclusion. I am a math teacher and love incorporating literature into my lessons. I have linked this to fractions, decimals, and percents. #dojochat
Whatβs considered a βread aloudβ? A book, magazine, newspaper? I have a feeling this is some elementary tchr. lingo not everyone understands. #dojochat
So true. Diversity is beyond skin color and religion. Medical things matter. I have 2 students with T1 - they come to school "different" than their peers and we talk about it. #dojochat
In MA we have Understanding our Differences @UstandRDiffs - students learn all about individuals with disabilities to have a better understanding how they live their lives #dojochat
A4: "Loser" is another personal favorite to read with my advisory. The discussions around Zinkoff's characters can range! I've read it with my 4th graders every year and 6th graders this year. #dojochat
A5, I truly asked this question because I felt as a teacher I had ZERO resources here, so SHARE as much as you can!!! #dojochat you have 9 minutes until the next question so tweet tweet tweet!!!
A5: We were just trained on @SanfordHarmony program today and it has a whole unit on diversity and inclusion. (and the whole program is free for schools!) #dojochat
A5: I've been using lessons from @betterworldedu . They have a bank of empathy challenges that integrate literacy and math while also building student compassion, inclusivity, and empathy. It's a fantastic resource! #dojochat#inclusion#diversity
A5: We use the online sites of major newspapers, magazines, & television stations. We also use online video resources. Online is our best outlet for finding authentic resources in French. #dojochat
A6 No, because I'm not in the classroom anymore, but the winter olympics always reminds me of the Cool Runnings movie! That's a cultural twist for sure! #dojochat
A6 I always touched on the Olympics, but more as a way to look at another country, the last time it was Soji (spelling?) and the kids were mostly focused/concerned about all the stray dogs #dojochat
A6: I showed my students to opening ceremonies and we talked about the different cultures and how all the countries were there together and getting along. #dojochat

A6: Many Ss didnβt realize that French is the official language of the Olympics. They were surprised to see & hear all the French in the Opening Ceremonies. Those who have watched figure skating have noticed several skatersβ music is in French. #dojochat
A7 Read one of the books mentioned would be an EASY one! Hang a poster with a role model of a different background than your students #dojochat (lots of ideas shared here tonight) β€οΈ
I'd like to see a chat on diverse learners - ideas and practices. I think a lot of Ts are already doing full inclusion and but there is not diagnosis. So much awareness to raise. So many cracks to fill. Lose no one. Keep 'em all inspired and learning. #dojochat
Well obviously the conversation here never ends, but our "time" is up for tonight. Thanks to everyone who joined, can't wait to chat again next week β€οΈ #dojochat
Thanks for joining us tonight! We hope you're inspired and ready to take on tomorrow! π Don't forget to follow the teacher friends you've made during #dojochat tonight.
