Please introduce yourself, where you are from, and answer this question: Do you feel #PumpkinSpice is over used this time of year! Add a pic your favorite or least favorite Pumpkin Spice product #5thchat
Oh man! I'm not a fan of pumpkin spice & it seems to be everywhere in Sept/Oct!
I'm Paul Solarz, a 4th grade teacher from Arlington Heights, Illinois. Thankful to have @BKd204Sci moderating #5thchat tonight!!!
A1 In our learning space it looks like Ss taking on roles to improve their confidence and communication Getting them a bit out of their comfort zone is ok once in awhile #5thchat
Leadership in our learning space includes students building confidence, working collaboratively, taking initiative in the classroom, leading from behind, and taking ownership and accountability. #5thchat
A1: So far this year, I,ve been building our class up as a team/family. We talk about how we represent our family/team when we are in or out of the room. If we are unsure, we ask our team. Some step up to the challenge and take the lead during sm group. Work in progress #5thchat
From what I have experience, students not only show initiative and other responsibilities for themselves but also, when Ss encourage and motivates each other too.

A1 - Student Leadership has many "faces" in our classroom, because we have Active Leaders & Passive Leaders. Everyone shows their leadership on a daily basis though, because it's part of our culture. Here are some recent examples...

I think it’s super important to build a sense of community where students feel like they can take a leadership role, but it definitely takes time! #5thChat

The hard part is teaching them to be more independent. 5 yrs of them being dependent on "what do I do next" as opposed to knowing how to problem solve. (Im sure not every grade before me) #5thchat
A2 - RESPONSIBILITY PARTNERS are a great example of small scale leadership! Students help their assigned partner complete independent work, follow directions, make revisions, and stay focused on their work.
#5thchat#LearnLAP
A2: Small changes for our crew include jobs and “whole class responsibilities” They apply for a job they want and run with it. They get so good at it, that I hardly think about it. #5thchat
A2 Peer collaboration is one way I found Ss can start becoming stronger leaders. I feel all Ss can lead, they just lack the experience to have confidence #littlesteps#5thchat
A2: Small scale: Representative of their small group (rotate weekly), have Ss show their methods/style of problem solving in subject areas for the class (video, demonstration, small group monitor) #5thchat
A3 I use table captains, who oversee tables of 4 to keep the science energy going in class They act like mini group manages that oversee a project #5thchat
A3 - GIVE ME FIVE!
My students have the power to interrupt class whenever they need to in order to transition, give direction, share resources, ask questions, get help, etc. This is the most important leadership tool that my students have!
#5thchat#LearnLAP
A3 - TED-ED TALKS
I have my students record a "TED-ED Talk" about one of their Passion Projects at the end of the school year in order to passionately connect with others about a topic that matters deeply to them. Examples: https://t.co/B98T2oKSF7#5thchat#LearnLAP
A3- Give me 5 (Thanks @PaulSolarz) has been a game changer with our crew. We also implement task managers for larger tasks that need to be done. #5thchat
Never a problem Phillip! :)
I use popsicle sticks to randomly partner my kiddos throughout the day. They get quite a workout!
I want everyone to work with everyone so they build stronger relationships and we as a class become a stronger unit!
#5thchat#LearnLAP
I am sure it takes a lot of instruction on the front end as well as knowing the appropriate times (probably not during guided reading etc...) I know one girl in my class who would probably take advantage! haha! She loves to share with the class. #5thchat
Haven't had anyone abuse it in years! I actually forgot to talk about the importance of not abusing it this year and so far we haven't had a single mistake! Kids appreciate the power & authority we give them & want it to continue (but it's easy to prevent too)! #5thchat#LearnLAP
A4 The first step toward leadership is knowing how to lead yourself through a day Empowering Ss to first be a leader for themselves is what I want all my Ss to feel #5thchat
Honestly, I don't give any restrictions outside of standardized testing & when they're out of our classroom. I want them to do a GM5 during a math test if they remember something I was supposed to announce but forgot, or while I'm teaching if it's time to get to gym! #5thchat

A4 An important part of leadership is effective communication! And the best way to learn to communicate through practice. Ss don’t always need other Ss, but it can help their development as leaders! #5thchat
A4: Becoming a leader yourself is important, but I feel it must be cultivated through working with others. I had a S who was not super confident, but started to take ownership in groups and she became more confidence and a leader in her own right. #5thchat
"Give me Five" definitely takes a lot of whole-class prompting and individual planting in order for it to happen as often as I want it to. That being said, my new 4th graders are doing it 5-10 times each day already & it's finally more than the usual 2-3 leaders! #5thchat
A5 When Ss lead they work together; when they work together they hear other perspectives; when they hear other perspectives they solve more problems TOGETHER! #5thchat
One of our jobs as Ts is to guide Ss to work together to solve a problem It takes a village to lead a village! When we work together much more is able to be accomplished #5thchat
A4: If students don’t practice leadership skills in the classroom where will they develop this ability? Most people would respond the home or on an athletic team. Parents are busy working and only a small % of kids are playing sports today. It has to happen in the class. #5thchat
A5: not only does it give students autonomy in the class, but benefits of S leadership go way beyond the classroom! It gives them valuable experience for their future, no matter what they end up doing! #5thchat
A6 I feel it really helps the struggling student, too often they just think they can't, when they see they can the light bulb can go off & it can be a game changer #5thchat
A1: After reading @TheLeaderinMe, I committed to developing the leadership skills of the students in my class. My students hold leadership positions like: secretary, pencil distributor, IT Manager, and Facilities Manager. Students use the 7 Habits vocab to communicate. #5thchat
In reply to
@BKd204Sci, @PaulSolarz, @TheLeaderinMe
I agree! If they have to explain something to another student, the struggling student will have to learn it themselves, which ultimately benefits both students #5thchat
A6) Honestly - I would say both. All students need opportunities to be leaders. All students need opportunities to lead. They can lead through words and/or actions. Some students may need more guidance and refinement in being leaders than others. #5thchat
A7 A classroom where leadership is cultivated and shared is one that is always active There are rarely crickets chirping in a leader filled classroom #5thchat
Thought Ss leadership, they are incharge of classroom environment. I think it gives student a way of having a choice in how to manage the material they are learning and the relationship between them. #5thchat
Right on. I am trying to implement some of these practices this year, though our day is jam packed (teaching all subjects and remediation.) There is more push for "traditional methods" but I am trying to build more alt practices in throughout the year #5thchat
A7 Student leadership leads to student ownership of the classroom & the learning! No longer is this the teacher's classroom - it's all of ours & we want to take care of it & make learning happen here! We believe that we ALL win & succeed, or else NO ONE wins or succeeds! #5thchat
A8 It was mentioned earlier about community being important Having Ss lead builds that community sense in a learning space That can only help a T be more purposeful and intentional w/instruction #5thchat
A3: Using the terms from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective teens, large scale leadership looks like “Playing Well With Others.”
4. Think Win-Win
5. Seek First To Understand, Than Be Understood.
6. Synergize
#5thchat
I want to thank all of you for taking part in tonight's #5thChat Hope you found the discussion relevant to your learning space Thanks also to @PaulSolarz for letting me spend an hour with all of you!
A8 - I've stopped being neurotic about the clock, the supplies, making sure everyone is doing everything exactly right, etc. My kiddos take care of everything & don't seem to be worried about any of it! Teaching has become simplified as a result of student leadership!
