Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
Dr. Nancy Sulla is here hosting #LATICchat tonight and joining #teachmindful; creator of the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom; author of ...
A1 NMS Grade 8 S's have designed National Monuments for the West, Cold War Memorials for D.C., The next best innovation for 2030 in 12 different aspects of life. Designed a prosecution or a defense for POTUS Truman. Just a few #LATICchat
A2 not sure if this is lovely or not but when kiddos come up to me with a simple problem they can solve themselves I tell them they can use my phone to call their parents for advice. They laugh and start naming solutions 😂 #LATICchat
A2) I think empathy is so important ... a graphic organizer can help ... who does this affect? how do you think they feel? what do you think thy want? what would you feel like in their situation? #LATICchat
A2 I love the What if scenario's allows S's to explore many different perspectives to a problem and reach for a larger or more encompassing solution. #LATICchat
A2: This is a challenge... in the best way. When students can see how their ideas make a difference, and to whom they will make a difference, their ideating improves. #AudienceMatters#LATICchat
A2) we related the glider design to the need for supplies to be flown to natural disaster victims. They came up with people in Puerto Rico and Hawaii with the volcanoes #laticchat

A3 this question was amazing for getting students to understand that we see the sun rise in the east and set in the west. Trying to figure out why our shadows moved throughout the day outside helped too! #LATICchat
A3) I like to have students write down at the end of an activity how it is going to help them solve their problem ... keeps them connecting content to problem. #LATICchat
A3: Having the task prominently visible in the classroom, discussing how what they've learned applies to the problem solution, journaling, reflecting... this is another reason why I love #HomeGroups#LATICchat
A3 Problems are like clues in National Treasure yes they have a solution but should lead to many other clues, questions or directions so students delve deeper and reach farther than we or they can expect or sometimes even imagine. Thats how we change the world #LATICchat
A4 @Flipgrid ! Sharing ideas, listening to others’ adding to theirs there! I also love poster carousels... S share their idea and we walk around adding ours to theirs on post its #LATICchat
A4) Prime #creativity ... have students each bring a personal belonging to the table and ask them to design a lesson that includes all of them. #LATICchat
A4) Important to set guidelines to generate as many ideas as they can in a time period without saying any are good or not .. just generate ... how many can you come up with ... go! #LATICchat
I love that, too. A4: Ultimately Ss need time to brainstorm, and some tools to do it. Create a culture where thinking and generating possibilities is encouraged. #LATICchat
A4 I found it difficult at first to get away from the 1 right answer mindset. But now it is open ended and reflected in my Tasks, Rubrics, AL's and even my S's like to pepper a wall with potential ideas before narrowing their own focus. #LATICchat
A5) One of the most important questions we can ask is "what might the unintended consequences of your solution be?" ... this is what always seems to get us in trouble in the world. #LATICchat
A5 all I can think of is a culture of sharing. Now who comes up with it first or best, but sharing ideas, learning from each other, perfecting the group’s ideas #LATICchat
A5 By using local experts and an authentic audience I find that S's sift based on authentic feedback from peers as well as our guests instead of just me and them. #LATICchat
A5: Interesting experience just this week: happened to see Ss sifting in K and then later the same day in 4. Sifting was so much more social in 4th - seeking peer input to see consequences. Ss in K - sifting for what they each preferred. #EgoAtWork#LATICchat
A5) Too often, students generate a solution and run with it ... we need to teach them to generate 5 possible solutions and then sift through those to pick the best! #LATICchat
S's prosecuting Truman always use Oppenheimer quote about how we wish we never discovered it. vs. Truman's we thank it has come to us instead of to our enemy #LATICchat
A6) Simulating can be hard unless you're building a physical prototype to test out. But a poem, song, or infographic is a simulation of a solution ... a storyboard for a video is ... #LATICchat
A6: I've seen Ss 3-D print models or design blueprints, send out surveys to gather feedback and preferences, write a rough draft and get feedback, map out a plan, etc. It's about approximating and then learning what others think and feel to craft the best solution. #LATICchat
yes, you can use designprocess in any subject ... just craft a real-world problem students could solve if they learned the curricular content, and go with it! #LATICchat
A6) Ss can share prototypes of 3D structures or books in Bookcreator or other plans in their home groups as a test audience . Like a “ focus group. #LATICchat
If you're not already using it, you'd love DeBono's PMI 3-column chart for your classroom - Plusses, Minuses, Ideas - 2 mins for each column to gather LOTS of insights. #LATICchat
A6 schematic designs, materials lists, perspective sketches, renderings and maps for locations not to mention historical documentation all helped S's create their vision for an authentic audience National Parks Dept. For Westward Expansion National Mrker and Mnumnt ALU #LATICchat
I will give it a try. We use a check is agree, ? add a question to designer or triangle change an idea but always initials, own your concepts and thoughts. #LATICchat
A8) I think a flowchart of sorts could help ... e.g. at simulate ... Did it work? No? Might you select another idea? ... go to Sift. Might you need more ideas? ... go to Ideate. Might you need more information? Go to Explore. #designthinking#LATICchat
A8 this process always brings me back to a day 1 lesson using Harry Chapin's Circle. "No clear cut begginings and so far no dead ends". Life is a circle, design is a circle we are all interconnected. #LATICchat
