Yvonne Thomas asks, "How can I get more girls to join? What do you think I can do differently? Of the few girls I have in my computer science classes, how can I get them to engage more?" #edtech#edchathttps://t.co/nsAL0S2CPE#MSFTAdvocate

I don’t have that ‘eugh back to school tomorrow...’ feeling because I know there are children at home now feeling excited to join their new classmates, talk to me and explore their new classroom. 🙌🏻 #edchat#primaryrocks#Firstdayofschool2018

classroom procedures ... sure let's dictate every minute of the school day for the kids ... need to go pee? Better stay seated and cross your fingers and wait for teacher approval ... #edchat
Open House! I’m so excited for another year! Seeing last year’s kids in comparison to the tiny humans that walked in my room tonight blew my mind! Can’t wait to bring this group up a level. #xplap#tlap#gamification#2ndgrade#2ndchat#edchat
My Ss r ages 5 & 6. I choose their seating. Later, when we start doing workshop, they can choose their place for parts of the day, but that comes later. #edchat
Regulating student behavior does not necessarily require written rules that require a Constitutional scholar to understand ... often teachers are looking to close loopholes rather than producing a quality learning environment. #edchat
I usually have students pick their seat. I've found they tend to stay in those spots as the year progresses. I'll move them from time to time so they get to know each other and to build a better collaborative culture. #edchat
I’m torn about this one right now as I set-up my Gr. 4 class - I would like Ss to freely choose their seats (they know better than I do who they can work with) but I don’t want to cause anxiety about where to sit or w/ who, or create situations for exclusion from a group. #edchat
I think that's a valid concern. I wonder if you could initially start w/assigned seating, and then slowly move towards more flexible? Even if only certain times during the day? #edchat
Very important to have procedures on getting equipment and just overall movement in the classroom. Have enough space for lots of different setups. #edchat
#RoboEdChat is coming back tonight at 8:00pm ET. We'll be discussing #STEM activities for this upcoming school year. Please join us!

That’s a good idea - more flexible as the class community comes together. I’m also creating different break-out spaces for Ss to work. Ss “home base” (desks) will be for short moments of instruction before the exciting work begins w/ more choice. #edchat

AR will let you see what the students think in a way similar to the speech bubbles in comics.

I use flexible seating, which means students always have choices about where they are in the classroom. It isn’t every day, though - exams, Socratic Seminars, performances all require different set-ups #edchat
Exactly! We get concerned when schools pay big $$ to monitor student social media accounts. We are in the business of building relationships!!! not surveillance of students. #SchoolSafety#edChat#ToolKitTalk
Agreed. I would also add that Ts would benefit from additional training on how to make that happen.I think for some Ts, that might be easy.Others, however, might require a little xtra support/guidance/training to do this. Workshops? Observe Ts? PD? #EdChat
I design classroom norms with my kiddos at the beginning of the year. As for materials, I have a shelf w/pencils, sharpener, crayons, markers, glue, stapler, tape, scissors, colored pencils available for any time. #Edchat
I think the how, when, why, etc. for accessing technology is an important component of classroom procedures. Especially when it comes to digital citizenship and appropriate use. #edchat

I wonder what procedures we mean. Or, r we speaking policy? In my view,"testing" is assessing 2 tell me,the teacher, what my Ss know. If a S does not "pass" a test, I am still required to get said student 2 the learning objectives not yet met (meaning I will asses again). #edchat
We don't raise hands in any other setting. We need to teach kids how to respectfully and politely interact. Might best be introduced over time. #Edchat
Things we need to stop saying to kids:
“We just need to get through this math problem.”
“I don’t like math either.”
“I’m not a math person.”
Developing a culture of learning means we have let go of biases.

Interesting....there are times in meetings when adults actually do raise their hands. I have been trained in Instructional Conversations through UGA, and we are working on teaching our Ss how to respectfully and politely interact (w/out hand raising). #Edchat

I'm a. adult who will raise my hand. In my experience, some adults have difficulty monitoring their air time, leaving others with fewer speaking opportunities. Even as adults, we have not managed effective communication. Using a protocol helps, but it still isn't perfect. #EdChat
I often wonder how much real time educators spend on procedures that will work to engage, restrict, punish, and assess their kids for the year. #Edchat
At the request of many educators, I’m going to start a Facebook group to discuss Troublemakers by @CarlaShalaby If you’re interested DM me or simply watch my feed for the group in the next day or so. This book deserves attention. 🙌 #teachers#edchat#ekemchat#troublemakers
During read aloud times I find hand-raising stifles the conversation. I like to let the comments and discussion ‘bubble up’ in a natural way. I’ve also had success w/ Ss using ‘stop & jot’ journals to park their thinking while they wait to jump into a conversation. #edchat
