Q1: Children, and adults for that matter, have no control over the hand they are dealt. In the game of life, what hand has the dealer dealt you at this very moment? What about your students? #3rdchat
A1: Teaching: Sitting on a Full House & ready to raise my bet. Students: Remembering why some act out before Summer vacation. Many students are looking at a Royal Flush of a Summer with lots of things to look forward to. Others are hoping for a pair of 2s. #DealerBeKind. #3rdchat
A1 I have an incredible hand. I work at a school where I have flexibility to design a classroom environment based on my beliefs of how children learn best. My students are eager to learn and come to school each day willing to work hard and try new things! #3rdchat

A1: Right now I’ve been dealt opportunites to lead for my county as well as lead and collaborate with my colleagues. For my students, this will allow them more opportunities for growth as I learn ways to better my craft #3rdchat#nhcschat
Eating like crazy... our daughter was a premie and we had to force her to eat it seemed... he has already maxed out the small bottle and almost the medium size... #3rdchat
A1: I feel so blessed at this moment in life. I love that I can spend time with my kiddos and watch them learn and grow. I love my job, and the people I work with.. and I’m getting opportunities to teach other teachers- which I LOVE to do! I am so thankful! #3rdchat
A1: An amazing hand. A network of support. An amazing supportive admin, years of experience, a desire to improve. My students reap the benefits. Even though some of their hands are lacking, we share our cards. #3rdchat
A1 I try not to focus on the negatives in the game of life. We all have them. They will get the best of you if you allow them. It’s all about perspective. I choose to find a positive in every situation #3rdchat
A1: I'm fortunate to have a winning hand at school - with leaders and colleagues and students! My hope is that my students feel like they have a winning hand, too! #3rdchat
A1: My hand is pretty good, but I do feel like the cards are changing daily. We have admin changes that are causing some uncertainty about next year. My Ss are not dealt the best cards. I hope I run into several this summer to see if I can bring them some surprise! #3rdchat
A1: I am currently blessed with a very strong hand. Supportive parents, AMAZING kids who come to school eager to learn. Great district that encourages risk taking and innovation. #3rdchat
Q1: Children, and adults for that matter, have no control over the hand they are dealt. In the game of life, what hand has the dealer dealt you at this very moment? What about your students? #3rdchat
A1: I grew up in the same neighborhood as my students and it wasn’t easy then, certainly not always easy now. However, I know that they can become whatever they want to become. There are no limitations, except the ones they put on themselves. #3rdchat
Q2: Hope and Wade's childhood positive and negative experiences shaped them into the people and educators they are today. What past experiences shape you as a teacher? #3rdchat
For the kids, I just finished The Wild Robot and The Wild Robot Escapes - both awesome!! I'm working on small groups with some Debbie Diller books. And for fun I read anything by Nora Roberts! #3rdchat
A2: I was an Asst. Principal for 2 years & Principal for 8 years. I have seen many students, teachers and families dealt hands that challenged them and even the school community. That experience has made me more empathetic when I returned to the classroom. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A2 I was a quiet student and often felt overlooked. School wasn't easy for me but I had a hard time asking for the help I needed. I make sure each of my s's know that I see them as a student and a person. I work hard to keep anyone from slipping through the cracks. #3rdchat
A2: I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. I admired those great teachers I was lucky enough to have in my elementary years. #3rdchat
A1) I feel that, it’s how you look at the deal in hand. I am currently a Sub teacher. I look at it in an optimistic way, that I have the flexibility, when to work an when to take off to explore my passions. It can be seen in another negative way also. It’s the mind game #3rdchat
A2: My mom is British. I lived for a year in England. I had a strong English accent as a young child. I remember being send to speech class because teachers "couldn't understand me." I also remember this making me feel embarrassed of my mother. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A2: I feel like my childhood definitely shaped who I am as a teacher. I was lucky to love coming to school everyday, and I feel like that’s what I bring to my classroom everyday. #3rdchat
A2: School came pretty easy for me but both my brothers dropped out in HS. Our childhood wasn’t perfect and I handled it differently than they did. I saw how much they struggled and it’s helped me become a better teacher. I want to reach ALL my students. #3rdchat
A2: Truly believe all experiences shape us. We need to use them all to grow and to help others. Mine have pushed me to try harder, others grew me, some took me from comfort, but stretched me. It also gives me understanding for others. #3rdchat
A2: Switching grade levels, switching schools and having a principal and AP who jumpstarted my interest in leadership as well as being a MCE for @Flocabulary !#3rdchat#nhcschat
A1: I'm fortunate to have a winning hand at school - with leaders and colleagues and students! My hope is that my students feel like they have a winning hand, too! #3rdchat
A2 My parents taught me to never take anything or granted, treat others with respect no matter their circumstances, and to have faith when times are tough because things will work out the way they are meant to #3rdchat
A2: I was lucky to grow up with a Mom that was an amazing teacher, but I think even some of my not-so-good ones shaped who I am today! #3rdchat#bethewildcard
Wow! That is awesome staying connected with your students over the Summer. You have to be flexible when managing your cards. The game can change at any time. #3rdchat
A2: I had both experiences. I had fabulous teachers who patiently guided me and pushed me to excel. I also had teachers who had checked out, prejudged me or didn't want to devote the extra time to understand me. There is a silver lining in everything if you grow from it. #3rdchat
A2) I teach math which I was NOT good at when I was young. However, I hope I can now be an inspiration to my students who are not strong in math.
#3rdchat
I served as a substitute teacher for 5 years when my kids were young. I learned so much being in so many different classrooms/schools. I think it helped me learn to embrace (and even crave) change. #3rdchat
A2: The relationship I have with my family has shaped me as an educator. I would also say each child I have taught in the past 9 years has given me the heart of the teacher I am today. ❤️ #3rdchat
Q2: Hope and Wade's childhood positive and negative experiences shaped them into the people and educators they are today. What past experiences shape you as a teacher? #3rdchat
A2 cont. I make it a point to make all of my students feel important. I didn’t feel that way in school. Other children were not kind to me & I do my best to look out for those who may be excluded right picked on. School is to be a positive experience #3rdchat
A2: I matured earlier than the other girls & I was bullied. I became an introvert & had a lot of self-loathing. Helps me to be more empathetic w my kids. #3rdchat
A1: I have a pretty sweet hand personally right now at this point in my life. However, some of my students - not so much - families falling apart through divorce, crime, and addiction. I just pray to see them as the God sees them. #3rdchat
A2: RELATIONSHIPS- I had great relationships with my teacher when I was growing up. I want to have that with my students too.Once you are my student, you are always my student.I will continue to check on you and ask about you.I am your number one cheerleader for life! #3rdchat
I served as a substitute teacher for 5 years when my kids were young. I learned so much being in so many different classrooms/schools. I think it helped me learn to embrace (and even crave) change. #3rdchat
I loved being a principal. Needed to step back into the classroom to spend more time with the family. Looking at a new hand of cards but finding leadership in new directions. I am happy to help with anything you need. #3rdchat
Q3: Personality quirks, interests, hobbies, and strengths enable us to deliver content in engaging ways. What are some ways that you can use your authentic self to engage your students?
#3rdchat
Same here! I love teaching multiple strategies. Hoping they at least grasp on to ONE way and know that they don’t all learn the same-and that’s okay! #3rdchat
I have some funny stories from that time I will have to share another time. I will say that I cannot do a British accent to save my life now. It does make me sad at times. #3rdchat
I loved being a principal. Needed to step back into the classroom to spend more time with the family. Looking at a new hand of cards but finding leadership in new directions. I am happy to help with anything you need. #3rdchat
A3 I have a passion for environmental causes. I am happiest when guiding my s's to make a real impact in the world and on their environment. My best lessons incorporate these elements. #3rdchat
A3: I grew up watching a lot of movies and TV. I also have a love for editing and producing videos. This year, I smashed @DoInkTweets with iMovie and created a class @Youtube channel to tell our class story and to have a little fun. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
I finished my teaching degree in Dec 2016 and new to edu as an educator. I am subbing the first year, did two long term maternity covers and explored the rest of the time working with various grade levels. Just finishing my work with grade 2 this term today. #3rdchat
I think a sense of humor is critical. Ss like when you show that you can be silly as well. Sometimes I also might start to dance or sing (off key) to get their attention. #3rdchat
A2: I’ve had both positive and negative past experiences. I’ve dealt with a lot of loss and that has helped me connect with students who have lost parents as well. I also believe that coming into the profession in my 30’s has given me a different perspective. #3rdchat
A3: I love culture and diversity. I love allowing my students opportunities for that. I love creativity and writing, and that keeps me from worksheets and textbooks. #3rdchat
A3: I’m not the best singer or dancer, but I love to be goofy & showcase my flaws in the classroom. Often in serious moments or just to have fun, I have very silly moments with my students as well as I love to show up to their houses, bday parties and extracurriculars. #3rdchat
I was fortunate that my district, family, and school community supported me. I am appreciative of the love and support I received during the transition. #3rdchat
A3: I think I’m really funny 😆 My kids love when I’m silly with them and crack corny jokes. Them teaching me to Floss was one of their favorite moments of the year. I also love sports so I bring that in a lot as well. #3rdchat
My mum was Scottish. I lost my accent. I was singled out because she was different. I can relate. We definitely try to celebrate our uniqueness more in classrooms today, or at least most of us are moving in that direction #3rdchat
A3: My husband constantly says how "dramatic" I am. I prefer the term "enthusiastic." With my cheerleader spirit, I feel confident that I can make even the hardest skills fun and exciting to teach. My Ss feed off of my high energy. #3rdchat
A3: I think my love of books can show my authentic self, using the characters and themes to share parts of my life and learning! #3rdchat#BeTheWildCard
Q3: Personality quirks, interests, hobbies, and strengths enable us to deliver content in engaging ways. What are some ways that you can use your authentic self to engage your students?
#3rdchat
I am switching careers after a long break to care for my kids and supporting my husband’s career ( frequent international relocations) . Teaching is my 4th career, but I am sure will stay here for longer if not rest of my life, as I know why I am here #3rdchat
A3: I like to learn new cultures, new ideas, dances---really anything new. I really love it when the kids share with me and teach me new things. I try to make our class a two way street where the kids are proud to show me new things too. #3rdchat
A3: I love singing and dancing. I am horrible at both, but I enjoy being silly with the kids. I also love utilizing PBLs, BreakOut Edu, and finding real world ways for students to connect with content. #3rdchat
A2: My colleagues for one - they are amazing! But also after a couple of bad years, I realized I needed to pick myself up/look for solutions because what I was doing wasn't working. That's when I began connecting to other Ts & resources that were useful. Never look back! #3rdchat
We love making those videos and having a YouTube channel. The other day, I asked my kiddos what they will miss about 3rd Grade. One student responded “Being Famous!” #3rdchat
A3: I feel like it is easier for me because they know I grew up in their city. I am very honest about my life struggles. I tell them if they ever fall of track they just need to find their way back. Just like me. #3rdchat
A3: I am a lovey person by nature, so relationships are something that comes naturally to me. I am working on being more comfortable with myself and my quirkiness.. 3rd graders are so forgiving. They have been good for me! #3rdchat
A3 I can be a bit dramatic & silly. This brings some entertainment to our lessons & read aloud. I can also be loud. This helps when a child needs a cheerleader. #3rdchat
Q4: Thinking about a fixed mindset vs. a growth mindset, what are some of the biggest obstacles we face in teaching students how to adjust their mindset? #3rdchat
A3: My dad always told dumb jokes, but 5th graders seem to like them! Also, I love all things math and techy - I play up to that! #bethewildcard#3rdchat
A4: First, we need to check our own mindset and fully commit to seeking growth. Next, students may need to be taught how to take ownership of their learning. Students are more likely to grow when they take ownership and invest in their own learning. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A4 The things that students have heard from teachers, parents, and even peers becomes the dialogue that they tell themselves. Many students have already developed negative self talk. Convincing them they have the power to change their world can be hard. #3rdchat
A2) my experiences as a parent made me study teaching degree & get into edu, I not only wanted the best for my child, I wanted to understand how children learn and how I can support. In the process, I found out how much I love all children, not just mine and being in edu #3rdchat
A4: First, we need to check our own mindset and fully commit to seeking growth. Next, students may need to be taught how to take ownership of their learning. Students are more likely to grow when they take ownership and invest in their own learning. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A4: It takes a while for life to create repeated situations that lead to a fixed mindset. So, it often takes a while to change that mindset. If a kid has repeatedly experienced negative events, it is going to take a while to bring them out of a negative mindset. #3rdchat
A4: I think a lot of students lack self-confidence, making it difficult for them to shift their mindset. It's our job to help them stand strong against those negative influences surrounding them. #3rdchat
A4: Many students need the chance to feel empowered. Often they think once they are wrong/fail, it’s over. Having a classroom where we celebrate every success, no matter how small and encourage everyone, including failures, helps change mindsets. Even your own! #3rdchat
A4: At times it is the messages they get from other adults We spend a lot of time talking about the importance of learning, making mistakes, and growth. Some of the kids hear messages hyper-focused on grades. #3rdchat
Q4: Thinking about a fixed mindset vs. a growth mindset, what are some of the biggest obstacles we face in teaching students how to adjust their mindset? #3rdchat
A3: service projects are important to me and that kids feel empowered & confident. I try to do all I can to help them achieve this & become civic minded #3rdchat
I love it! I love being goofy. I "dazzle" my students with my Dad dancing and Dad jokes. Those jokes used to be a lot funnier when I was younger. Ha! #3rdchat
Yes! This is what I want to help my students with: it's ok to be wrong...you learn best from your corrections! I relate very well to this - I hate to be wrong, but I mess up a lot! ha! I model this pretty well! #3rdchat
A4: I teach littles in 2nd grade and I think they need to know the difference between both. Also, celebrating times when they were not successful at something but they kept at it. For example, STEM challenges are great for this. #3rdchat
A3) I have many personal passions and hobbies which I love to integrate in my teaching. I feel very authentic when I use my strengths (technology, arts, photography, crafting, scrapbooking) etc #3rdchat
A5 I have an amazing PLN that helps to hold me accountable! They can talk me through just about anything, encourage me to try new things, keep me grounded. #3rdchat
A5: I overcome my challenges with an attitude of gratitude. I try to be thankful for everything I have and reflect on how I have overcome past challenges. Sometimes, I have all the tools, talents and resources I need. I focus on what I CAN do. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A5: Self reflection and seeking student input helps. I also have a teacher tribe that are honest in their feedback and challenge me to be my best. Staying focused on my "why" helps me when I find "the Joker" whispering doubts in my ear. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A5: I’ll take a step back and regroup. I often talk to a few colleagues for their advice and bounce ideas around. It’s a great way to hit a reset button and refocus and to change my mindset. #3rdchat
A5: I acknowledge the issue, but don't cater to it. I share my life experience and that if I let my situation defeat me, I would not be where I am today. Tell them that they are bigger and better than whatever is trying to hold them back, & then help them find solutions. #3rdchat
A4: I think my mindset is the biggest barrier sometimes. It is something I am working on everyday. My students do a great job of reminding me that it may not be right now... but it WILL happen. Also, @CJLuckeyDope’s album...💣 for growth mindset #3rdchat
A4 Some are so afraid to take risks for fear of making a mistake. By the 2nd week is of school we were using the phrases “This is a learning experience” & “Where can we improve”. #3rdchat
A5: I lean on others! I search out others who understand what I’m going through and can talk through it with me. Twitter has been a great place to come to as well. I’m encouraged by the amazing educators on here! And I remember that it’s all for the kids! #3rdchat
A4) the idea school leads to university and grades end up in making students feel that they are good at something and not good at something. The understanding that learning happens everywhere anytime should be accepted by all ( parents, Teachers and students themselves) #3rdchat
A5: Self reflection and seeking student input helps. I also have a teacher tribe that are honest in their feedback and challenge me to be my best. Staying focused on my "why" helps me when I find "the Joker" whispering doubts in my ear. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
So important to encourage students to “be big”. The Joker makes us want to shrink and hide. We can be bigger than anything that Joker can throw at us! #3rdchat
Q6: Sometimes, life deals you a joker who scoffs at your efforts to succeed. What does “The Joker” say to make you feel like you have failed? What motivates you to grow beyond that mindset?#3rdchat
A5: turn to my squad at school & on Twitter. I read old notes from past students & watch movies about great teachers to remind myself I’m not so different. #3rdchat
A5: I read once that if your brain doesn't believe there is a solution, it won't look for one. First you must believe that there IS a solution. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A5) I love reading about the joker in the book. It’s so true for newcomer to education like me. I have learnt over the last year by observing other educators on how to send back the joker back without letting it fool us #3rdchat
A6: I don’t like feeling stupid. I can hear the Joker telling me that when I make a mistake or fail to meet a goal. However, I have always enjoyed playing the part of the underdog. I dig deep, dust myself off, and keep moving forward. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A5 I begin taking baby steps towards achieving or attempting the goal. It’s not a race. Do things at your own pace, own method. You are going to model this for your students. It’s a learning process for ALL of us. What is the worse that could happen? Reflect & Try again.#3rdchat
A6: Seeds of doubt form when I start thinking about "the test," "the pacing guide," or feel pressure to meet a deadline for a common assessment. Remembering why I teach helps. Talking with my team always is a source of support. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A6: Joker says you are alone in this. He taunts, but what does the data say? I do what I believe is right. I pay attention, see if it is working, making a difference. I silence the joker with ignoring. #3rdchat
A5: I try to keep a positive outlook when faced with challenges. Whatever the challenge is, it’s only temporarily. My team is also a great support system. #3rdchat
A6: Seeds of doubt form when I start thinking about "the test," "the pacing guide," or feel pressure to meet a deadline for a common assessment. Remembering why I teach helps. Talking with my team always is a source of support. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A6: The Joker likes to tell me I’m in over my head and I don’t have enough experience under my belt. I overcome this mindset by seeing how my students and their families react to what’s happening in our classroom as well as speaking to my colleagues. #3rdchat
A6 sometimes i get tired and wonder if I am really having the impact I strive for. Then I look at those sweet faces looking to me for guidance and I keep on trying for one more day. #3rdchat
A6) I'm a perfectionist, so that is the Joker's easiest seed to pick with me. I'm honest with my students when something didn't go as planned. And my teammates remind me to relax and ask me what I learned from my mistakes.
#3rdchat
A6: My littles are my motivation, they keep me going. If we try something and it doesn’t work, we try it again a different way! We learn from our mistakes together. #3rdchat
A6: As I have gotten older, it is easier to recognize the joker when he pulls his tricks. I see him for what he is, turn my back on him and then go about my business. Usually he is dressed in fear, and I don't like that style any more. #3rdchat
A6: My competitive nature can get the best of me. The Joker tells me others are better than me and it makes me not want to try so that there's no competition to win. I have to remember that we're all on the same team and want the same things for our Ss. #3rdchat#BeTheWildCard
A6: I constantly feel like I could be a much better teacher and like I’m not giving my kids what’s best for them. I know deep down that’s not true. Positive feedback from the kids and parents really helps.I appreciate words of affirmation.I try to do that with my Ss too. #3rdchat
A6: It's funny how you can have 10 great things happen and 1 bad thing, but that 1 bad thing can bring you down. It helps when I pray to keep a right perspective. Or just tell the joker to SHUT UP! #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A6: I agree with @lesahaney completely. I am my own worst enemy.. the seeds of doubt are hard to shake in s they’ve been planted. I’m lucky that my hall mates can help pull me out of a funk.. and quick! ❤️ @JesseEdiger@williams_angier@MrsRJHill_RM109#3rdchat
A6: Seeds of doubt form when I start thinking about "the test," "the pacing guide," or feel pressure to meet a deadline for a common assessment. Remembering why I teach helps. Talking with my team always is a source of support. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A6 That situation or idea is impossible & I’m a complete fool for thinking that it would work. Then I usually find a friend or 2 & pass my thoughts by them for some feedback & advice. #3rdchat
We would love to have you come back. I have been chatting with the #3rdchat community for about a year and they are FANTASTIC PEOPLE. Good vibes live here. #3rdchat
A7: I appreciated what the Kings said about original ideas. People inspire us with their ideas and then we “pour our own self” into those ideas. That is how we make them original. #3rdchat#bethewildcard
A7: An "ah-ha" for me was realizing that in order for me to #bethewildcard I need to draw from my personal creativity and not try to recreate what someone else does. #3rdchat
A7: I didn’t really realize how my past experiences have really shaped me as a teacher. These chapters gave me some time to be reflective and figure out my “why.” #3rdchat
A7 my delivery method drives engagement - I have seen this time and time again. I can change the tide. It is so improtant to start the day off right and keep it there! #3rdchat
A7) On pg 20, "You have to teach to standards...but standards don't determine how you DELIVER the contents, it's your delivery method that drives engagement."
#3rdchat
We understand. I will say it is a good and easy read. I actually had to make myself slow down. Read when you can, but always come back and chat with us! #3rdchat
A7: I loved the idea of we are all dealt an unpredictable hand and working to change your mindset in how to teach curriculum that you may not like, “breathing life” into it, which in turns allows your creativity to shine. #3rdchat
A7: My a-ha is that you guide the curriculum, and not the curriculum guiding you. Your style, personality, and creativity should not be diminished because of what teachers are told they HAVE to teach. We are told what, but not how! #3rdchat
A7: I liked how they didn't give up when their school was low performing & they were being judged. Instead of throwing their hands in the air, they used their creativity. There's always a way around a negative situation. You simply have to believe that you can do it. #3rdchat
A6) joker keeps telling me that “you are new to edu. May be you don’t know what other exp teacher knows”. I keep learning & reflecting everyday. I have understood that I bring all my previous experiences from other careers as my strength and niche skills #3rdchat
A7: It really hit me to think about how children don't have control over the hand they are dealt in life, but WE can become that wildcard teacher who gives them a chance at winning. I absolutely love that! #3rdchat#BeTheWildCard
A7: My AHA! was when I realized I could take the “scripted curriculum” and dramatically deliver it in the passionate way my personality, experience, and creativity can express it. #3rdchat
A7 I never really thought about it before but that there is nothing really new in education & that we are all inspired by something or someone. It’s just how these things are used that makes it new & exciting #3rdchat
Absolutely! This is a people business. Build those relationships with your students, colleagues and families. Experience will come. You can't speed up time. Right now is in your control. #3rdchat
A7: "There aren't many original ideas in education. And it doesn't matter. If your students find your lessons fresh and new to them, they will be engaged." #3rdchat#bethewildcard
Thanks so much @azurehenwood for getting our discussion started this week. I loved your thoughtful questions. They set a great tone for our study this summer. #3rdchat
A7: this book reminds me a lot of teach like a pirate #flap so it was more of an affirmation rather than an a-ha. That I can be crazy/zany & it doesn’t matter what other adults think as long as the Ss are on board & learning #3rdchat
