  • JacquiLehmkuhl Sep 20 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A1: Heat for sure, but another challenge is the perspective of the mathletes entering the room. I struggle with the answer getting, procedure possessed, and grade obsessed mathletes. #octmchat
  • Emilyndennett Sep 20 @ 8:39 PM EDT
A1 Students being very reluctant to share their thinking or saying they understand when they don't. #octmchat
  • MrsArnoldPlus1 Sep 20 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Q2 is coming soon. We have 4 prompts tonight with an end time of 9:00 p.m. EST #octmchat
  • MrsArnoldPlus1 Sep 20 @ 8:41 PM EDT
    Here is Q2 for #octmchat.
  • mathbarb Sep 20 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A1:I was always the pioneer - trying whatever to make my math class better. I challenged my principal. :) It is hard to be a pioneer in a building with your peers as well. But what’s best for students and their learning is why I did what I did. #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Sep 20 @ 8:42 PM EDT
A1: My Ss focus on grades and “is this right?” mentality challenged my learning culture #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Sep 20 @ 8:42 PM EDT
Oh yes - grade obsessed is an accurate descriptor! Would love to see this culture change - but as the mom of a HS senior applying to colleges, I see how it happens. #octmchat
    In reply to @JacquiLehmkuhl
  • taiwanjacklin Sep 20 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A1 some students are fine with just learning procedural knowledge in math. They don’t want to get to understand conceptual knowledge. #octmchat
    In reply to @MrsArnoldPlus1
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Sep 20 @ 8:44 PM EDT
This really can be SUCH a challenge, Barb! I’ve had other teachers tell me to “stop making them look bad”. Fortunately, that culture seems to be improving as we have more opportunities for collaboration! #octmchat
    In reply to @mathbarb
  • Emilyndennett Sep 20 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A2 Students must feel safe to take risks and stretch their thinking. #octmchat
  • mathbarb Sep 20 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A2 Believing in students is so important. That allows them to be a part of the math class. Relationships are so important as well. These things help set the tone. #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Sep 20 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A1: Some kids need to move or sit in non-traditional ways while learning. Some need to talk it out. Some need it quiet. #octmchat
  • MrsArnoldPlus1 Sep 20 @ 8:46 PM EDT
Q3 is coming up. Don’t forget to include #octmchat in each of your tweets!
  • math8LC Sep 20 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A2: culture is important! Ss feel comfortable they are willing to try & mistakes are part of learning. ( I’m 8th grade math/Algebra) #octmchat
  • MrsArnoldPlus1 Sep 20 @ 8:47 PM EDT
    Here is Q3 for #octmchat.
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Sep 20 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A2: I often hear people in our district say you have to take care of Maslow before you can take care of Bloom’s. Ss need to feel safe to make mistakes and grow before they can learn deeply. (And have food, shelter & security....but that’s another chat sometime....) #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Sep 20 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A2: Creating a safe, inclusive classroom is essential for learning. A place where mistakes are honored and respected. #octmchat
  • chrissybug24 Sep 20 @ 8:48 PM EDT
A2: Learning is very personal.. Ss need to feel safe to try, make mistakes, and celebrate in our classrooms #octmchat
  • taiwanjacklin Sep 20 @ 8:49 PM EDT
A2 because it connects to students’ mindset and motivation. Students can be motivated by the culture. #octmchat

  • MrsArnoldPlus1 Sep 20 @ 8:52 PM EDT
Last question (Q4) is coming up in one minute. #octmchat
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Sep 20 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A3: Establish relationships & getting to know your Ss on a personal level is essential. Giving them a voice early on and empowering them goes a long way. I loved @saravdwerf name tent idea! #octmchat
  • MathRocks73 Sep 20 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A3: I love starting with activities like Week of Inspirational Math. Showing the kids the videos about Mindset and mistakes are essential. Also stuff like #WODB and #NumberTalks #octmchat
  • Emilyndennett Sep 20 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A3 I think one important thing is to allow plenty of wait time when students are answering a question or explaining their thinking. #octmchat
  • math8LC Sep 20 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A3: try to get to know them & share with them who I am. More than just a teacher. Show them math outside our classroom walls. #octmchat
  • MrsArnoldPlus1 Sep 20 @ 8:53 PM EDT
Here is Q4 for #octmchat. Be sure to build your PLN and follow new people from tonight’s chat!

A3: I try to call on all students - no hiding!! Encouraging the discussion, maybe by turn and talk first, then share what your conversations were. #octmchat
  • professorteds Sep 20 @ 8:54 PM EDT
A3 I use photovoice interviews, which involves bringing in and talking about personal photos. I mainly work with college sts, though. But it help creat vulnerability and a shared sense of humanity in the class, building a culture of sharing and trust. #octmchat
  • TheMissHirsch Sep 20 @ 8:55 PM EDT
A3: I’m late to the party but we take time to make sure our students know their classmates’ names. We practice by shaking hands and saying “good morning so and so” every morning. Love this community building! #octmchat

oh, forgot to introduce myself. Hi! Teddy Chao here. Math Ed professor at @OhioState Thanks for letting me join so late! #octmchat
  • taiwanjacklin Sep 20 @ 8:56 PM EDT
I would acknowledge students’ efforts in their thinking even they don’t solve it or get a wrong answer. It takes risks to be successful #octmchat
    In reply to @MrsArnoldPlus1
  • BaileyJodie - Moderator Sep 20 @ 8:56 PM EDT
What a great idea, Teddy! Do you have a prompt for sharing the photo? Seems like this could easily be done in K-12 settings! #octmchat

A3: I choose kind, and try to eliminate any judgement on thinking. I also am reaching out to each and every mathlete to form that relationship. Google classroom, Good Note cards sent home, Name Tents, mini conferences. #WhateverItTakes#MathChat #octmchat
  • devin_andersond Sep 20 @ 8:59 PM EDT
A4: When I go into classrooms I try to ask students what they are working on or thinking about rather than answers. I also try to join congress’ or gallery walks as a listener to show Ss their voices are valued. #octmchat
