A1: #District75 students have safety issues beyond the basics-between feeding tubes, medications, allergies, seizures, etc-after that you can move broader issues of classroom management-when we fail the fear is realized in students like Avonte Oquendo #NYCSchoolsTechChat
As someone said, you must Maslow before you Bloom. We can help students safe by tending to their heart & making sure they are loved with these 5 shifts https://t.co/oWq2L4Ig59#NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q2 You have to Maslow before you Bloom. How are you ensuring your students feel a sense of love and belonging in your classroom? https://t.co/9HflPUXzI8#NYCSchoolsTechChat

My students have special needs & are K-2. We do practice drills & review social stories. We keep extra room key in a box by the door. We mark the spot on the floor of where to keep back & we have a bag to leave the room & for in room. Also an extra door stop. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2-Greeting them at the door, and standing in the hallway during the change of class making eye contact with my students helps me maintain a relationship with them. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A1: Step 1 is a relationship-know who your students are to know their personal, social, and physiological struggles/needs. Then you can make them feel welcome and structure instruction more effectively #NYCSchoolsTechChathttps://t.co/DIsmtaQAHc
We greet every child coming off the bus every morning. It is something small but we want each kid to feel they have someone in the morning. Also having kids work and pictures hung up makes them feel they belong. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Informing and communicating. Our Ss and personnel are our best resources. When there is something happening we must all communicate with one another. Ss, teachers, admin and everyone! Creating a central database for all to access should be next step #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2 Making your school community inviting & welcoming can help keep it safe. Here are 6 ideas to help students & families feel welcomed. https://t.co/LQMbzqKu5d#NYCSchoolsTechChat
A1. When I hear my kids got into a fight, I tend to pull them during my available time to have a private conversation on the WHY. Kids feel safer when they are listened to. It always helps to encourage them to find other solutions #NYCSchoolsTechChat
We use TCIS (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Schools) to help students deescalate as well as to drain off emotions. We also do Yoga with all students each day to help center themselves. Visual supports, stories and modeling are helpful too. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A3: We’ve had assemblies and stepped-up counseling when a student or staff member has passed away (usually medical reasons). We make sure teachers and students have outlets and opportunities to discuss their grief. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: Yes! I mean a lot of our kids don't even have parents for goodness sakes. Let's address that by ensuring all kids are raised by parents rather than guardians. Organizations like https://t.co/ZubhbKoJID can help. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q4 How does class size and class load affect your ability to connect & build relationships with students? How is your school ensuring you have a manageable number of students? #NYCSchoolsTechChathttps://t.co/ga1twiP90L
A2. Sometimes I sense those kids who need lots of support and someone to listen to them to help them navigate through life and make best decisions. I tend to clench on them once in a while. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
Q2 You have to Maslow before you Bloom. How are you ensuring your students feel a sense of love and belonging in your classroom? https://t.co/9HflPUXzI8#NYCSchoolsTechChat
A2: Inclusion and communication with students and parents as well as admin. Keeping everyone informed. It only takes one person to make a difference. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

A4-My classes are full. This is a real challenge for us. We don’t have a lot of “turnover,” so we do get to know the students throughout the year. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4: It’s hard to build a relationship when you have too many students to even remember their names. Not a real problem in my world-apart from inclusion the biggest classes have 12 due to the intensity of student need. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
It effects your ability to connect with students and assess small changes which lead to big issues. It also leads to not being able to connect to every family as much as you would like. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A4. I co-teach in ICT settings 30 kids and 2 teachers in the room. Size does make a difference. In my case, we get lots of support from the Dean, Mr. Flecha, and the administration. #NYCSchoolsTechChat

A3. @eileen_lennon we also talk among colleagues to support our kids succeed and feel safe. Principal also calls meetings to create a school safe environment #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5-Each teacher post updates on @Skedula every month to let the parents know what’s going on in the classroom, plus the frequent messages from the administration. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A3: Our school has great counselors and dedicated teachers and administrators ! They work together as a team. We reserve meeting times so that we can talk about our student's needs. #nycschoolstechchat
A5. PSMS161 uses Skedula too. Parents and staff gets training to use it. Some, like myself, also use Remind to connect with each parent. Send general messages and individual messages to keep parents updated. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5: Regular family activities & opportunities-movies, events, trainings with technology and area special education organizations to provide home help-ongoing communication is key #NYCSchoolsTechChat
We have started lunch with your family where we focus on a topic (toothbrushing, handwriting, etc.) and practice it after having lunch. Parents can talk to each other and come in during lunch and we give them resources to practice at home. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A5: An engaged principal being at the school entryway at the beginning and end of the day – greeting/chatting with students and families – can go a long way. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
I have to say it really helps me too. I feel more relaxed afterwards. For example, we did an extra round today because the kids were having a hard time and it helped me stay calm. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
A6: 1 of the most effective ways has been gamifying instruction which has helped create wholly different relationship dynamics & has changed the way students discuss/address bullying. They are more invested in the success of themselves/their teams in class. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
#NYCSchoolsTechChat we try to evenly distribute classes but talent classes are too full and we have 6 talents. They wanted to add from 34 to 40 in my soon to be new lab. Can’t fit!!

Q6 we have assemblies we have peer mediation and of course we cover this in my computer classes with common sense media and other resources. #NYCSchoolsTechChat
