Hey #CFISDchat PLN! I’ll be in and out tonight. Just got home from Journey to Masters PD and fulfilling mom duties too. I’m Kandace Blowey, AAS @salyardsms. I loved elementary school and loved most of my teachers. #WeAreSalyards#SwashBengal
Hey #CFISDchat peeps! Brandy, IS at @HemmenwayStreak and my fav elementary memory is Mrs Knott reading the entire Narnia series and then watching the movies. @MrsYelenick, sounds like a great topic to join in tonight!
Intro pt 2: I missed the memory part! I loved read alouds! It established a life long love for reading. I distinctly remember my 3rd Gr teacher reading Charlotte’s Web. #CFISDchat
A0: Hi everyone! Matt Campbell, Social Studies Coach from ISC. I remember being a loud and obnoxious kid in elementary. No wonder I became a teacher.😂😂🤣 #CFISDchat
A0: I’m Cheryl Fisher, proud principal at @CFISDWells and I remember my awesome teachers like Mr. McIlduff at Milsap and Mr. Goodson, my principal at Lamkin. #CFISDChat
A0: I forgot the intro question! I LOVED reading in elementary school! May have gotten in trouble once, twice... or a lot... for reading when I should have been paying attention to other subjects! Also my teacher had an actual Magic Treehouse we could read in! #cfisdchat
A0: Hey Y'all Erika Kinder T from @CFISDWells I went to a bunch of different Elementary schools including one overseas....So I remember being the new kid :) #cfisdchat
A1: Never underestimate what they can learn while still keeping in mind what is developmentally appropriate. They are sponges and they should love school! #CFISDchat
A1: I honestly feel like it is brain development. There is so much that can be learned at a young age that has a drastic effect on your ability to process/think. #CFISDchat
A1: creating learners...developing a love for school and showing Ss what it means to learn, establishing that school IS for you, so that students feel they belong in and want to stay in school. #CFISDchat
A0: Kellye Kaspar Math Interventionist @CFISDJowell#CFISDchat I remember the way my teachers made me feel! I remember my elementary Ts more than any other Ts
A1: We know from research that young Ss need to feel safe, supported, and loved to excel in early childhood education. We know from John Hattie all strategies work, but the love and support of the teacher(s) makes a significant difference in their foundation. #CFISDchat
A1: It’s hard to pick just one! 🤔I’d say it’s learning through play and exploration. We need to instill the love of school and learning in our kids! #cfisdchat
#cfisdchat A1 The most important influence in my early years of my childhood education was the sincere interest my teachers displayed towards me and other students. I had one teacher who believed in me because I was deathly shy!
A1: I believe that the most important thing about ECHE is letting them explore! The Ss have so many new things being introduced to them that it's so important to just let them have time to test and experiment with everything they're learning! #cfisdchat
A1: Most important thing about early education is to teach these kiddos how to learn, study and get along with others. We are the building blocks to their future. We guide the way by making the experience positive and fun. #CFISDchat
A1: I think teaching kiddos how they can apply what they are learning to their lives here and now is super important. The sooner they learn knowledge is power the better! #CFISDchat#POPEPride
A2: Providing the foundation, especially in learning to read and write is pivotal. We also have to establish a loving and safe environment so that they confident in taking risks and failing forward. #growthmindset starts here. #CFISDchat
A2: I believe that primary education impacts students later by helping them develop the necessary love of learning. It is so hard to teach them to love learning if they don't have that foundational exposure early on. #cfisdchat
A1: To inspire inquiry and spark the life long love of learning...To model a love of learning and reading. A quote I love :Education is not a Filling of a Bucket but rather a Lighting of a Fire! #cfisdchat
Q0 Danielle Haymes- Instructional Technology Specialist. I remember Mrs. Ogden, my first grade teacher, giving me a journal and I filled it with lots of stories. Still my favorite teacher! #cfisdchat
A2: I also believe that student can develop interest and also what ways they like learn. This is always helpful later in school. Without exploring though, they may not know what they like. #CFISDchat
A2-Primary education provides the goundation for learning-it all builds on one another. It's hard to build when you don't have all the pieces. #cfisdchat
A2: Ss are Learning a lot in the primary levels of education. We set the framework on how learning looks and is perceived. We need to make sure that they know mistakes are ok. We learn from them. And to make every experience as positive as it can be. #CFISDchat
A2: primary ed sets up foundations socially, emotionally, and academically. It become evident very quickly when there are gaps in any of these areas. Without a solid foundation, we have to go back and fill in the deficits. #CFISDchat
A2: The foundation needed for literacy. Primary sets students for success as readers and writers that they will continue to need as they grow. #cfisdchat
A1: I think it is so important to ignite a love of learning and inquiry as well as a sense of safety to take risks and make mistakes in order to learn! #CFISDchat#pumapride#postmapumas
A2: I’ve been reading a lot lately about habits and how we are a product of our habits, our auto-pilot actions that make up who we are. I’m just thinking how many things become habits in primary...from processing, to handwriting, to reading, to kindness. #CFISDchat
A1: With my daughter, I feel like school is new everyday. She is gaining a sense of herself as a student. It is incredible to see how school influence builds their self efficacy as students. I think it’s so important for them to feel success at that age. #CFISDchat#WeAreSalyards
A3: I’ve seen playlists, choice boards, station rotations and flexible seating in primary grades. They can do it if they know they’ve been taught the procedures and expectations-just like the “big kids”. #CFISDchat
A2 primary sets the tone for students feelings about self, learning, and school. Many of those feelings will impact students’ throughout their school journey #CFISDchat
A2: primary education not only builds the foundation but sets the the mood for learning for a child. It gives them the guidance to know how to try and learn from failure or it teaches them that failure is bad and they shouldn’t try #CFISDchat
A3: I am not in primary. There are so many @CFISDWells teachers who have implemented choice boards and playlist with their primary students! 🙌🏼 #CFISDchat
A3: I’ve seen playlists, choice boards, station rotations and flexible seating in primary grades. They can do it if they’ve been taught the procedures and expectations-just like the “big kids”. #CFISDchat
A3: I took after Bev Howe at Lamkin and created a class government that made choices for us all...from class rules to class party games, you name it. It was great! #CFISDchat
A3: One easy way I provide student choice on a daily basis is letting them choose which probs to do in small group. They can go in any order they would like. Allowing Ss to pick a topic of their choice for instruction that day. Letting them pick incentives #CFISDchat
A3: PLAYLISTS!!! Today we broke out our new themed playlist to match our room decorations! It took my amazing class no time at all to adapt to the new layout of something they already loved doing. They get to work at their own pace and choose the order they go in! #cfisdchat
A2: I think that the experiences (good and bad) students have in primary education can absolutely set the tone for their view of education from then on. Having the support and joy in the beginning makes students WANT to come to school! #CFISDchat#pumapride#postmapumas
A3: SO MANY ways! Stations/centers, playlists, menus, choice boards, readers workshop and self-selected texts...TONS of student choice every single day @CFISDWells! #CFISDchat
A3-I acquire their help in where they sit in the classroom that will work best for them. I have even asked for their help in setting up the room. #cfisdchat
I allow my students to pick an item/activity to work for before each academic rotation. At the end of each rotation if they completed their work then they get 2 minutes with what they chose. It’s only 2 minutes but the kids LOVE it! #CFISDchat#POPEPride
A3: Lots of Student Choice in my K classroom. They choose their seating for sure. My ELA and Math blocks have a Free Choice components during rotations. We self assess our behavior and have tons of class meetings to plan and discuss! #CFISDchat
A3: I allow my students to pick an item/activity they want to work for before each academic rotation. At the end of the rotation if they have finished their work then they get 2 minutes with what they chose. It’s only 2 minutes but they LOVE it! #CFISDchat#POPEPride
A4 it’s been a while since I was a primary teacher, but I gave most of my feedback in conferences or small group. I focused on what they were already doing and grew from there rather than focusing on what they couldn’t do yet #CFISDchat
A4: I feel this comes down to making just about everything a teachable moment. It doesn’t even have to be school work. As a secondary teacher I took those opportunities for life lessons. Most of my students appreciated that more than the content. #CFISDchat
Q3: One way I provide student choose is through alternative seating. Students choose to work on the floor, on cushions, lying down, under tables, using clipboards, wherever they are comfortable and working! #CFISDchat#pumapride#postmapumas
A4: I give immediate feedback through small group, 1:1 conferring, playlist check-ins, and more! As much as they get to share out with their peers and myself, immediate feedback happens almost constantly #cfisdchat
A2: I feel that primary education impacts students in nearly every area of their school career. From their attitude about school, to building a solid foundation for other grades to build upon. When students struggle in primary its often difficult for them to catch up #CFISDchat
A3: I incorporate choice using playlists! (Blog Post with a link to the ones I use at https://t.co/VjxmcutOOg) @CFISD_Fishtank inspired me today to mix up our playlist with a fun holiday theme. Working on this one now! 😀 #CFISDchat#explorewells
A4: Back to K daughter (cause that's my only primary experience) - she is already self-assessing her writing using a rubric at school. We talk at home about what she thinks her writing is and how she can improve. #CFISDchat
A4: One way we give feedback @WillbernES is to provide recognition and reinforce effort. When we do this, kids get feedback about precisely what they did so well and why it was great!#CFISDchat
A3: (part 2) Genius Hour! I’ve seen teachers let students vote on the next read aloud, choice in quick write prompt for the day...it’s just becoming part of the culture to plan for ways to provide choice! #CFISDchat
A4: Immediate feedback is given to Ss in my small groups. We discuss test/quiz results as soon as they come in. We discuss strategies that worked and others that didn’t go so well. Goal setting and reflection is a must to get Ss to be accountable and motivated #CFISDchat
A4: When I taught 1st I gave a lot of feedback through conferences, in small groups and strategy groups. We used share time at the end of reading and writing time to share and give feedback to one another. #cfisdchat
A1 It’s where students get to first experience school we build relationships, set expectations, build a foundation, and show them how to love learning! #cfisdchat
A5: Through a lot of guidance from @E_Sheninger and peers, I've started using things such as device days, interactive use of our panels, @MergeVR, and LOOOOTS of blended learning! #cfisdchat
A4: conferring, success criteria boards w/ rubrics for writing (Ss self-assess their writing), peer feedback during partner reading & writing time, even self-reflection through @Seesaw & @Flipgrid responses. It’s important to get feedback from others, not just the T. #CFISDchat
A3 Students are free to choose where in the room they would like to read and are free to choose anywhere in the room to write during writing workshop. Im loving the playlists that Ive seen @CFISD_Fishtank use in her room and am excited/nervous to try them out for math #CFISDchat
A4: My students know their goal is to improve. We celebrate any and all gains. Because my students range from 1st-5th grade, we also talk about how what may not seem like a celebration for one may really be for another and that is okay. #CFISDchat#POPEPride
A4: Giving lots of feedback in conferences and small groups. Students meet in partners to help each other with reading, writing, and math. Students also receive feedback on behavior through PBIS puma cash and PRIDE grids. #CFISDchat#pumapride#postmapumas
A5 you have to be intentional in planning. Plan for the 4Cs, and give them opportunities to create, collaborate, critical think and communicate digitally with others #cfisdchat
A5: I love to incorporate technology! Students are able to use different pieces of technology in the classroom - we've even been coding! We are also working on problem solving and interpersonal skills through PBIS and the 8 keys. #CFISDchat#pumapride#postmapumas
A3 We love using choice boards. These little ones will surprise you on how well they can manage their time! It allows them to work at their own pace. @CFISDchat#cfisdchat
A5 we practice computational thinking with beebots and use tech tools to become familiar with the use of different apps and the how tos of the computer #cfisdchat
A5: by 1st establishing the mindset that even if *you’re* not an expert in the, your kids will figure it out! Be open and let kids have some control. Then play with it! That’s what being a 21st cent learner is...not having all the answers but being willing to try. #CFISDchat
A5: (part 2) It’s also about getting Ss to think critically, not just about “tech.” Asking higher-level questions bc Google can answer the low-level questions for them (and they know that!). Getting them to always rationalize and justify! #CFISDchat
A6: I really just recommend finding a primary teacher at your campus or in your area and asking to simply spend time in their room. There's only so much a book can teach you, but immersing yourself helps you get a better understanding of what all goes on! #cfisdchat
A5: Utilizing technology is the definition of 21st century learning. I use AAC devices with both my verbal and nonverbal students to have them participate in discussions, interact with peers, and request their wants and needs. #CFISDchat#POPEPride
A6: Honestly? A primary teacher on your campus! They are a wealth of knowledge. We have an AMAZING group of primary educators. #CFISDchat#pumapride#postmapumas
A6: a day in a primary classroom! We just had Go & Grows on our campus, and the intermediate Ts are always in awe of what primary Ts have going on & what they’re able to do with their Ss! #CFISDchat
