Q1: Just out in the world, not even related to education, what are some things people just generally enjoy. What is something that makes people super happy? #ATchat
Hi everyone! Beth from MD, so proud of my friend @attipscast for his latest book! Just purchased it and can't wait to read it this summer #atchathttps://t.co/Jt2J24S9Fd
A1: Wonderful question! Let's see, spending time with friends, reading, cooking, writing TPS reports, playing video games, shooting hoops, hunting for infinity stones to name a few.

Comparing alternative disability models of reading disability(dyslexia) by the their ability to predict the compensatory effect of AT(text-to-speech) use for students' reading comprehension. #atchat Let me know if this makes sense, hard to summarize.
Q2: Now, let’s flip that first question. Out in the world, what are some things people just generally dislike or hate? What are some things that make people super unhappy? #atchat
A1 I am new in the field of AT and I really love learning. Sometimes I get frustrated with myself, but Assistive Technology has opened up a whole new way of thinking about education. #ATchat

Q1: Just out in the world, not even related to education, what are some things people just generally enjoy. What is something that makes people super happy? #ATchat
A2: Not being understood or being misunderstood, writing TPS reports, when you're not able to do something you feel you should be able to do, when someone has all of your infinity stones.
#atchat
Q2: Now, let’s flip that first question. Out in the world, what are some things people just generally dislike or hate? What are some things that make people super unhappy? #atchat
A2: People don't like stuff they can't understand. Also, unhappy people may feel disconnected with the people in their life and may feel they no longer understand the world around them. Some people feel technology has passed them by. #atchat

Q3: Now, let’s rank them. In one tweet, list your top 5 things people like and 5 things people don’t like in order from favorite to least favorite. Please number them with 1 being the most enjoyable & 10 being the most disliked. #atchat
A2: I dislike negativity of any kind. Professionally, personally. I have no time for that. Too much to do - no time to spend energy on negativity #atchat
A2 not being successful, even when I have tried my best, inequity, being made fun of and Shingles. Which I found out I have today. I really don't like Shingles #atchat
A2 Dentist, egos, standardized testing, common core, people who are not flexible or active listeners, the news. Learning, my kids (biological and students) autumn, my dog, my family and early mornings. #ATchat

Q4: With only academics in mind (not the social parts of it), where do you think most students WITHOUT disabilities would place SCHOOL on the Likert scale you just constructed? #atchat
A3- 1-8 people who do things that help others be successful and the things they do.... 9. data and paperwork for no reason 10. people out to try to prove my Ss can't do things. #atchat#yesikindacheated

Q3 1 family, 2 friends, 3 being a problem solver, 4 reading, 5 the beach, 6 great food, 6 Shingles, 7 negativity, 8 lack of access, 9 inequity, 10 anyone that hurts the people I love (wow, I feel very serious, now) #atchat
A4: I’d view this as more of an understood vs misunderstood instead of a like vs dislike. Most adults working with children “like” children, but some out of lack of experience and knowledge don’t completely understand certain disabilities. #ATchat
Right. I think that plays into the social elements of school. Do you think anything changes if you look at it from a purely academic standpoint? #ATchat
Q4: With only academics in mind (not the social parts of it), where do you think most students WITHOUT disabilities would place SCHOOL on the Likert scale you just constructed? #atchat
A4 Near the bottom of the list because learning has become so directed oriented that there doesn't seem to be room for individual expression or the opportunity for authentic learning. ( I read your entire book) #ATchat
A3: 1-time with friends and family, 2-long walks, 3-concerts, 4-time at home (travel too much for work) 5-rain 6-broken car, 7-negativity, 8-being taken for granted, 9: loneliness, 10: losing a spouse #atchat
A3: 1. My family 2. My work 3. Learning something new 4. Helping someone else learn something new 5. Reading 6. Traffic 7. Bad hotel WiFi (like right now! 8. People who don’t listen 9&10. Negative people ( dislike so much they get two spots!) #atchat
A4 Near the bottom of the list because learning has become so directed oriented that there doesn't seem to be room for individual expression or the opportunity for authentic learning. ( I read your entire book) #ATchat
A5: This is very hard to pinpoint. So many variables play into how a student would perceive school: severity of the disability, type of disability, age of student, student’s general disposition, home support, general school environment, etc...list goes on and on! #ATchat
Q6: If you could redesign the school experience to make it more enjoyable for students with and without disabilities, what would be some practical changes you would make? #atchat
Teachers who understand and respect their students. Also students have the supplies and resources they need. The teachers are kind and patient and want the students to learn. Socializing at school is also a plus. #atchat
A4 depends on the child and the environmental their school provides. Supported student would put it in theblike. Unsupported the dislike. Need to look at the needs holistically and not just trouble shoot the red flags. #atchat
A5 It depends on their educator. Are they part of the solution or part of the problem? I believe that most students with a disability would rank school near the bottom, but I also believe that there is hope and a lot of wonderful educators who are making a change. #ATchat
I think school environment plays the biggest role in student success, but it’s not the only piece to a much bigger puzzle. Certainly a great (and important) place to start! #ATchat
I think it is how we as adults approach it--we need to make learning fun, and struggle productive. We can't make school easy, or kids don't learn to persevere, but we need to make the work engaging with positive outcomes within reach #atchat
A6: We need to remember kids are little adults who grow into adults. Teach more "why" that actually makes sense. Listen to them more because they'll tell us what we need to be teaching. BRING BACK PLAY especially in middle & high school.
#atchat
Q6: If you could redesign the school experience to make it more enjoyable for students with and without disabilities, what would be some practical changes you would make? #atchat
A-6 There would be no grades or grade levels and “curriculum” would be based on authentic or problem-based learning. Educators and students would work on teams #ATchat
A6: Not sure how to do it but I know it needs to include:
Covering students basic needs, physical and emotional safety at school and online. Well trained teachers and mental health professionals. Community outreach and support for parents. #atchat
Q6: If you could redesign the school experience to make it more enjoyable for students with and without disabilities, what would be some practical changes you would make? #atchat
A6: Universally designed curriculum, passion projects, interdisciplinary collaboration, Empower teachers and learners to retake ownership of the learning process so that it’s fun (even when it’s hard)! #ATChat
Q6: If you could redesign the school experience to make it more enjoyable for students with and without disabilities, what would be some practical changes you would make? #atchat
Yeah. I think that mostly points to the social elements of school. I like to be around people I like too. But what if we looked at the academics of school. Same response? Kids WANT to be there? #atchat
A6 curriculum resources need to be relevant, tasks need to be engaging with an authentic audience, students need to experience success when they put in effort, treat students with respect so they feel valued and and provide CHOICE! #atchat#udl#CRT

And where you really need to get the students to help drive some. What engages me might not engage you. Not everyone went infinity stone hunting. We need to get the kids to buy in where they are or it gets harder later.
#atchat
Environment meaning the opportunities afforded to enrich learning, the culture of the school, the resources available as well as how adept the staff is when working with students with varying abilities. #ATchat
I wonder if we invited students to solve authentic problems they cared about, if that would be the right sort of challenge to teach perseverance? #atchat
Often it can be done if we are cool with change. Funny how change-averse some systems on when, at their core, they're all about change and growth. #atchat

Q6: If you could redesign the school experience to make it more enjoyable for students with and without disabilities, what would be some practical changes you would make? #atchat
Yes! Listen, care, and design around what engages and drives them. Find their passions and give them the power and power tools to pursue their and share their interests #ATchat
A-6 There would be no grades or grade levels and “curriculum” would be based on authentic or problem-based learning. Educators and students would work on teams #ATchat
A6 Plan and implement lessons that are all inclusive, I think I wrote this before, but I believe that the mindset needs to change from, "I need to find a way" to "WE are providing the way by giving options and choices." #ATchat
And then carry that forward from middle to high to beyond (infinity?). If you get things working in one arena and it gets lost in the next, that's discouraging for students. #atchat

A7/8: a goal and direct services related to authentic kindness and connection #atchat (better late than never, but someone said Jedis and tabletop games)
Can you imagine how that would play out if we could help ignite this passion in our fellow educators and learners? Oh... wait.... we can.... do you hear it? It’s a paradigm shift. #ATChat
I was thinking the same thing. I don’t normally do #atchat on my phone. But bad WiFi has me on my phone and that GIF button it fits there. #MustResist#atchat
A9: Showing folks that it can happen without it costing everything. The rewards definitely worth it, and the effort typically reduces over time. It definitely does with more people helping. Kinda like pushing a car or saving the universe.
#atchat
It totally is. But I think the shift is happening gradually, with millions of little actions and decisions. Every one counts! We coach people to help them make inclusive choices every time. What do you think? #ATchat
A9: Inviting collaboration with others in house and outside of school. “The Twitter”’my Blog, collaborative sessions at conferences, webinars, online adjunct work. #ATChat

Thanks everyone for participating in #atchat. I hope you thought it was AWESOME! #AwesomeAT4All For more like this, please check out the book The New Assistive Tech: Make Learning Awesome For All https://t.co/o0TmIP1ke3 I hope it helps!
In higher ed, lots of folks are talking about the Growth Mindset and trying to instill it in our students. Honestly, we could infuse it into the whole of education and all of this would be done.

A9 Tell your students everyday that they are important to you and you believe in them. Then show them the same thing with the way you facilitate their learning. #atchat
