Welcome to #pln365 chat! I'm Holly - a science teacher & Digital designer in OBX, NC. My favorite B2S activity are mystery lineups where students must solve puzzles to find their seat!
Hey #pln365 favorite B2S activity is first week when I don't teach and I'm just pushed into the classrooms to help with Ss; get to know everybody so quickly
Welcome, Matt! So glad to have #2MenAndABook represented tonight - and we are talking about one of your favorites! I love your commitment to getting in classrooms! True leader! #pln365
Hey! It's Jamie from Southern Oregon! My favorite get to know you activity is having my students create pic collages to share with each other. :-) #PLN365

When we required [people] to own the problem and the solution to it, they would begin to view themselves as a vitally important link in the chain of command. #pln365
Hey #pln365! This is Michael A. from #122edchat in Chicago. #STEM Facilitator to the stars for @SmartLab_tweets from @Simmonsknights1. Favorite back to school activity is getting to meet the new 6th Graders at Backpack Night. They're terrified and need someone to believe in them.
Heather, Seattle, Kinder...I’ve said it a million times but the family meetings at the start of the year is my FAVORITE back to school activity #pln365
Hi! I’m Debbie, 8th grade science teacher in Colorado! I love taking our first class picture! I’m excited to use several new activities from #eduprotocols such as things that rock and a stem challenge! #pln365
Good evening #pln365
I’m Emily - HS ESL teacher in NC
Favorite back-to-School activity is having my #ELs understand and analyze their language proficiency levels by domain & set goals for the year! #pln365
I’m doing a new activity this year- getting to know you cranium! Can’t wait to see how it goes!!! Hopefully they can follow directions better than I can since I clearly did not read the intro chat tweet, lol!!! #pln365
“One of the things that limits our learning is our belief that we already know something.”
Q1: What is one “thing” that you already know that you are willing to revisit? #pln365
A1: Although I regularly differentiate instruction in my class, I constantly need to revisit this to learn new instructional strategies and see how other teachers are creating/delivering to meet a variety of needs in one learning space #pln365
A1: Demonstration of understanding in our SMART Lab. We were not thrilled with the e-portfolios, so we are exploring alternate options to showcase student voice. #pln365

Q1: What is one “thing” that you already know that you are willing to revisit? #pln365
Check out https://t.co/v6lIRuTKuB. I figured out their mechanism before they started selling it an made a bunch out of pvc pipe, caps, and rope. I have never told the answer. #pln365
Hey #PLN365 - hopping in to support my girl @hollysking - excited to learn with you! Alicia from NC - I love reconnecting with 7th & 8th graders by meeting them at the door!
A1: the importance of small group instruction compared to whole groups. I collected data comparing student interaction between the two and it was eye opening!!! #pln365
A1: I know and understand the @WIDAConsortium Can Do Descriptors BUT I’ll be teaching HS this year so I must revisit these standards to better serve my new students! #pln365
A1. I’m strong in building relationships, but want to grow in my ability to love others better. Especially those who can be hard to work with or love. #pln365
A1 There are a lot of things that I need to revisit, definitely more with #pbl and also more about #hyperdocs, but my main focus is continuing to build relationships and learn about Ss #pln365
A1: Research papers are my jam, but I'm always up for more learning about how to help students. Read the MLA Handbook today! This new 8th edition rocks! :-) #pln365
I know how to #flipclass. Been doing it for 7 years. This summer I took the certifications for 1 and 2 from flglobal and @jonbergmann to revisit and adjust what I was doing with it with new ideas. #pln365
“One of the things that limits our learning is our belief that we already know something.”
Q1: What is one “thing” that you already know that you are willing to revisit? #pln365
A1: Developing a positive culture is vital to school success. I am always willing to revisit this to learn MORE ways to develop a positive culture - no matter how great it is now, it only takes ONE straw to break the trust. #pln365
A1: Technology and how I integrate it in the classroom. As the "tech guru" I've got to always be learning what is new and coming next. I can't rest on what I used 2 years ago. #pln365
“One of the things that limits our learning is our belief that we already know something.”
Q1: What is one “thing” that you already know that you are willing to revisit? #pln365
My favorite back to school activity is having students create calling cards- 1 motto, a logo- 2 strengths and 2 interests and we use them all year long to set up partners etc. #pln365
“One of the things that limits our learning is our belief that we already know something.”
Q1: What is one “thing” that you already know that you are willing to revisit? #pln365
I know about the science of reading, but a recent initiative from the @ArkansasEd has caused me to learn more, and shift my thinking in some areas of how kids learn to read and what reading instruction looks like in the classroom. #RISEarkansas#pln365
“One of the things that limits our learning is our belief that we already know something.”
Q1: What is one “thing” that you already know that you are willing to revisit? #pln365
Quote: “The challenge is to use the same people by changing the way they interact and behave.”
Q2. How can you positively influence interactions in your learning environment? #pln365
A2: Positively impacting interactions by modeling positive interactions (even critical ones) with Ss. With all interactions, lead with kindness, extend grace, and recognize that you can positively influence reaction with a gentle delivery #pln365
A2: I like to be super goofy with lots of fun stories and music. I love getting to play with my kids and know them beyond what they can do academically #pln365
#pln365@hollysking Using pre- assessments to tier lessons and guide instruction- having students dig deeper with the data and have them help plan activities to best suit their needs and strengths
A1: I know and understand the @WIDAConsortium Can Do Descriptors BUT I’ll be teaching HS this year so I must revisit these standards to better serve my new students! #pln365
A1: I want to revisit the expectations for my Ss and their work. I want to raise the bar from day 1 and expect more from them. And support them all the way! #pln365
Quote: “The challenge is to use the same people by changing the way they interact and behave.”
Q2. How can you positively influence interactions in your learning environment? #pln365
A2- intentionality. Relationships tulle with adults just like with our Ss so ensure we truly know those around us will help us create positive environments. #pln365
Quote: “The challenge is to use the same people by changing the way they interact and behave.”
Q2. How can you positively influence interactions in your learning environment? #pln365
A2: Model, model, model. Our students (and at home, our kids) will reflect what they see us doing, how they see us handling stressful situations, interacting with others. We experience the fruit of what we produce. #pln365
Quote: “The challenge is to use the same people by changing the way they interact and behave.”
Q2. How can you positively influence interactions in your learning environment? #pln365
I'm going to work on work-life balance. Limit work and "thinking" about work at home and definitely have a work free Sunday. Hard to do, but so necessary. #pln365

I'm super excited to be here! #pln365 is a chat I've been watching and wanted to hop in! "the author of"... that gives me chills - hopefully one day I'll REALLY be "the author of" something more than my blog, lol! #DBC50Summer has been epic so far!
The have another thing called Data dilemma that is based on tangrams that I made into a hypothesis/theory/ law activity. Also use it during the intro phases. #pln365
A2: A high level of accountability and audacious expectations with transparency. I’m working on this area if focus this year. It is okay to make people uncomfortable sometimes. #pln365
Quote: “The challenge is to use the same people by changing the way they interact and behave.”
Q2. How can you positively influence interactions in your learning environment? #pln365
A2 I am naturally a positive person who is authentic and honest with my Ss. I try to model the behavior I expect and always make time for them. I get to know them and converse with them. I monitor my self care because I can't pour if my pitcher is empty. #PLN365
Quote: “The challenge is to use the same people by changing the way they interact and behave.”
Q2. How can you positively influence interactions in your learning environment? #pln365
#pln365 Mindfulness and kindness always- the more you use their name, look them in the eyes and smile the more they will trust you. The more you use positivity and joy the more they feel connected to you and this builds a community

A3: Embracing "inspectors" stems from a "growth mindset". This switches inspectors from a negative evaluation to a positive opportunity for improvement and requires a risk-tolerant faculty with admin that support failing forward #pln365
A3: Have an open door policy while teaching. Welcome visitors with a smile - better yet, have Ss welcome visitors so you can continue working with others. Ask for feedback from those who come to visit! #pln365
I am working on positive relationships with teachers too - inviting them to see my teacher wall mosaic of my favorite edu literature #pln365 it is almost done- here is a preview
A3: I love the individuality my teammates each member has something a little different and we all do things a little different which means I’m always learning & thinking...like band members playing different instruments in the same song (Shout our to the Pepper Effect) #pln365
A3: I will again be putting up my #ObserveMe sign with new goals for this year. Hoping those around me will come in and provide feedback. Need to promote it more to those around me. #pln365
A3 our Ts get observed once a week with a follow up meeting the same week so it is expected they embrace the inspectors; Guess I would push them to share the feedback & help hold them accountable for implementation #pln365
A2: Best way to promote interactions in the classroom is by modeling it and accepting and embracing Ss for who they are!
Providing chances for true interactions
#pln365
#pln365#observeme and ask for an invitation to visit other rooms - the more we communicate & collaborate the stronger the team building. It is so important that teachers feel a part of something outside their classroom.
Hahahaha, I do the same thing. I have been known to chase people down the hallway, run out into the parking lot to drag people into our Lab to show them "something awesome that the kids are creating". Now I just wish they were as excited as we are. #pln365
Quote: “As the importance of doing the right thing increases, so does the need to act deliberately.”
Q4. In education, why is important to engage your brain before executing a procedure? #pln365
A3 Part of the process, we need feedback, need to reflect and to do better we have to continue to monitor ourselves and provide guidance to others as well #pln365
A3: By recognizing that we are stronger together and seeing things through a different lens provides opportunities for new perspectives that lead to limitless outcomes. #pln365
A4: Engage your brain = Intention. Classroom practices should always be grounded in your WHY and never "going through the motions". This intentional mindset can become second nature with practice. #pln365
A4: For me... I tend to bypass my filter. I need to engage my brain before executing the procedure of opening my dang mouth - I've been told I need to dial back my passion. I just need to remember my audience & response accordingly. #pln365
A3: We will be under the microscope. half-day to full-day. Some Head Start students ( along with those guidelines). District guidelines, state guidelines. Federal guidelines. Can y'all guess how I'm feeling right about now?? #PLN35
A4: Sometimes life is stressful and I’ve got 500 things on my mind. If I don’t clear them out of my brain and focus on the sweethearts in front of me...I’m robbing them of an awesome day. #pln365
True! My balance will not match someone else's balance! And, to some, my fit might seem lopsided. What's important is that it works for me and fills my bucket! #pln365

A3: It’s important for Ss to see us being comfortable with a colleague observing and providing feedback. THIS will definitely model the expectation we have of them when it comes to peer feedback and support
#pln365
#pln365 As a learner with Dyslexia I really need time to transition between activities- I need a moment to get focused- many students need this too. They need to see it, hear it and find purpose then they can tackle almost anything
Quote: “As the importance of doing the right thing increases, so does the need to act deliberately.”
Q4. In education, why is important to engage your brain before executing a procedure? #pln365
A4 We sometimes need that moment or more to think before acting, evaluate our responses, also to keep our focus on what we are doing, our why, keeping balance, all of the above :) #pln365
A2 Celebrating each Ss strength, especially as applicable to tasks. Peer Expert boards are very helpful with this. By listing themselves as an expert at a skill, peers know which Ss are available for help they need. #PLN365
Also what you can give swings back and forth depending on where you are in life...my fit is different now a father of 3 than when I first started teaching #pln365

Q4. In education, why is important to engage your brain before executing a procedure? #pln365
A4: We have to be familiar with what we're teaching and understand what those outcome should be. With kids, you can't just go in cold turkey and expect to do any justice in their education. You'd be short-changing them! #PLN365
A4- when we work on autopilots begin to do things just because that’s the way they’ve always been done. That makes us lose sight of our WHY, of our Ss as individuals, and our own continued growth begins to slow or stop. #pln365
I am excited for your school- we have implemented #careacter Character Strong for the 2nd year and my focus in all my classes is mindfulness- breathing, respond not react and self- advocacy #pln365
Same here...but why do we need to "dial back our passion"? I'm sorry, but that is a load of crap. Do you think that @burgessdave got to be where he is by "dialing back" or being told to "tone down the crazy"? People want passion or they wouldn't be alive, IMHO. #pln365
I remember those days, Matt. I nap on Saturday was huge!! We're going into out second year as empty-nesters. I definitely turned to work to fill the void. I need to minimize that this year. Need a babysitter?!? 😋 #PLN365

#pln365 Thank you Holly @hollysking great questions- I plan to captain not alone but with every crew, my students, and my team this is when the waves calm and the wind unfurls the sails.
A4 In life it is important to be aware of what we are saying and how we say it. In education it is imperative that we do so as we should lead by example. #pln365
Word of mouth primarily. Talk about what I’m working on particularly with colleagues that I have relationships with. Have snacks available for those who may come in ;-). #ObserveMe#pln365
I plan to talk positively and ignore the drama. I know who has my back. At the end of the day, I can find inspiration to refill my pitcher here. #pln365
Thank you @PaulONeill1972 and #pln365 for the opportunity to moderate tonight's chat, @mlarson_nj for inspiring me to read the book, and to all the amazing educators who contributed tonight! You guys are incredible!
It provided me with a better perspective on how to communicate with various shareholders, and what they want to know about, not just general information. It has helped me to make our school more transparent. #observeme#pln365
