A1: Using pop culture is a great way to give students voice in the classroom. They are the experts and they most definitely deserve a voice! #BmoreEdchat
A1: Pop culture is a way to make lessons and learning relevant...as with anything, there are so many lessons to be learned from pop culture #BmoreEdchat
A1: We've got to meet our kids where they are. Sometimes we are eager to share our passions and issues or sources that we love as Ts, but we need to find out what matters to Ss even more. #bmoreedchat
#bmoreedchat so many of your tweets are coming up like this for me.... went into my privacy setting and can't seem to find the sensitive media selection... anyone else experiencing this/have advice?

A2: Goes to exactly what @Mr_Wickman_KHS stated. We have to inventory students. I love to use Cogenerative Circles from @chrisemdin to acquire this info & then to have kids TEACH! #BmoreEdchat

A2 ASK THEM remind them of appropriateness but ask them. Also be culturally responsive to your students and their culture. They are pop culture. Learn about their rich history #bmoreedchat
Listen 😀 listen to their conversations, ask about the music they keep humming while they work, ask! Engage in conversations with your kids about pop culture! #bmoreedchat
A1: Immediate engagement to topics that are sometimes difficult to understand like #FigurativeLanguage! Pop culture bridges the real world connection students need to retain info. #BmoreEdChat
Just think how much more meaningful and purposeful student engagement is when they see the practicality in what they’re learning if it involves their interests.
A2: A student interest survey can help-- but having continual conversations with students also works. Noticing student t-shirts and folders also shows their interests... #bmoreedchat
#BmoreEdchat
A2
Listen, watch, and talk to the students.
Twitter also helps keep me relevant with pop culture and thank God I have my grandson to help keep me up-to-date. :)
A2: Man...this feels like a softball. Talk to Ss like they are people. "I need to take my wife out on a date this weekend. What's good at the movies?" I ask kids for song recommendations to play in class. #bmoreedchat

Wow, @justincholbrook-- a nice variety of interest surveys! Love that there are picture responses (for early childhood) as well as more sophisticated options! Great find! #BmoreEdchat
Rolling numbers!! (Aka putting your multiplication facts to awesome songs) we also have a class cheer that goes to the tune of a Fetty Wap song 😜#bmoreedchat
A3: I teach AP Language, so we always write our first rhetorical analysis about either the saddest or happiest song students can suggest. This year's teacher model was @chancetherapper's "First World Problems" #bmoreedchat
#BmoreEdchat
We did an escape the room with my firsties - they had to crack several equivalence codes in order to escape the room. I brought in our "escape the room" timer from the game - so cool!
A1: Building real connections with students is critical. Engaging them by learning what they like, what’s relevant or intriguing to them also shows respect for their individuality and culture. A definite YES!!! #BmoreEdchat
A4: Pop culture can increase engagement. Engagement improves retention. Retention can result in learning gains. Learning gains are great!! #bmoreedchat
A3: I have used popular social media fakes for projects, Minecraft math and social studies activities, YouTube personalities, current music- whatever they bring me I have tried to find a way to incorporate it! #BmoreEdchat
Escape the room challenge: The kiddos LOVED it!
Checking to see if I see the timer here in the pics. If not, I do have a pic of it somewhere #bmoreEdchat
A5: Know your audience's maturity level and the tolerance of their Ps...many Ps give Ss phones but aren't really aware of everything their kids have access to #BmoreEdchat
A4 tricky- you best be sure you understand the pop culture reference- that it’s appropriate and that you use it correctly. Otherwise you just acted a fool 👋🏼✌🏼👎🏼 #BmoreEdchat#BeyMore
A5: Depending on my sources, sometimes I worry about text complexity. It' makes class super fun to read modern texts, but ultimately my kiddos will have to be able to decipher 19th Century British lit. That balance can be difficult. #bmoreedchat
Q5: Having to comb through lyrics for foul language was something I needed to do before. When incorporating online research for PBL units, we made sure to use kid-safe search engines. #bmoreedchat

A5 - pros
Great motivator
Fun and funny
honoring to the Ss
Cons
Can be a sensitive topic at times
Need to know your Ss. otherwise, can backfire.
Needs to enhance lesson and not take lesson over
Do you know a teacher, librarian, or any leader of a group that may want to talk to a scientist?
Tell them about #SkypeAScientist! It's a free program that matches scientists w/people who want to connect over science!

I don’t see any cons so long as you underhand the reference and it’s school appropriate as far as usage and connotation. I mean if you can #Bmore you might as well #BeyMore right? #BmoreEdchat Why just be more when you can bey-more
A5 Pros are definitely motivational and interest factors, not being in a prescribed bubble. Cons can be underlying messages or language choices in some of the content. #BmoreEdchat Tracking trends and identifying the agendas of the people behind the trends are important lessons.
#BmoreEdchat I use this as an opportunity for Ss to teach me: “Mr. Morgan we should change this song; it has foul language.” More often than not I already know, but it creates a sense of duty & responsibility when they speak up about anything that will affect our class culture.
A4: Pop culture can be a bridge for many reluctant students. It often engages students socially, which opens them to the academic engagement- sometimes without them even being aware until after the fact. #BmoreEdchat
A6: When you empower kids voice in the classroom you develop a community. Everyone has a story to tell & pop culture weaves it way through these stories as a supporting character. Educators must create the environments which trust kids as their own authors. #BmoreEdchat
A4: Pop culture can definitely walk/cross the line. Despacito comes to mind! We must be intentional and know before we say go! It also can be an entrance point or “safe” space to talk about sensitive topics. #BmoreEdchat
A6: As many have said- empowering S voices, respecting their culture, valuing them individually- it can help build a collaborative, respectful culture where S feel safe to participate, explore, push. #BmoreEdchat
A7: I think pop culture fits into the arts so perfectly due to the music, film, drama, and visual art we experience daily. Technology twists the arts in a whole new manner as well. Find your content, match it with pop culture, & create something new! #BmoreEdchat
Create is the key...too many just want the kids to watch/observe...our kids want to be the stars of the show...they want to be the next great youtuber #BmoreEdchat
A7: Sports & STEM are definitely siblings! There are also so many opportunities to use the arts to demonstrate the real-world applications of content! #BmoreEdchat
