Rachelle, joining from Pittsburgh, celebrating kind of submitting first draft of the 3rd book! :) #formativechat and that @mpilakow has a chapter in it!!
Hey everyone! David here! I am the Head of Community at @goformative and a former special educator! Currently in SF and excited for our discussion tonight! #formativechat
Good evening, #formativechat! Lauren from New York, currently on leave from teaching 6th grade English to write a book about integrating #SEL into academics. Celebrating the fact that Thrones starts in 3 months.
Meredith joining from SW Florida where a cool breeze is blowing in from the north tonight.
I am super excited about this topic of student reflection! #FormativeChat
My something to celebrate is out of school this time - my eldest daughter is expecting her baby #4 and the baby is due on my birthday!! August 10th #formativechat
Hey all! Sean Olson HS math teacher in southern NJ. Celebrated Monday by sharing some info and experiences from @EdCampLacey this past weekend. #formativechat
A1 By reflecting as well, thinking through things in class, asking students for thoughts, and being open with conversations we have, modeling the practice, using blogs is a great way to do this @Kidblog or also @voxer#formativechat
Hello everyone. My name is Luis and I'm an ELL teacher, tech coach, and director from RI. I am celebrating the fact that I participated in my first podcast conversation with @vendi55 weekend. Had a great chat about Formative. #formativechat
I teach 6th grade science in PA. Just glad I survivedthis Monday. Forgot elevator in car. Didn’t sign out room I needed for training and someone else did so had to move. My sweater was inside out. And, if anyone has ever failed PT, it would be me. Today. #formativechat
Intro part b: Something for #CelebrateMonday is that I was able to return to school today after missing all of last week. Whew! Glad to be back! #formativechat
A1. I use them in my gamified class. Wish I remembered to use them more. One of the items my kids can "buy" is Thor's Mjolnir.
If they roll a 1-3=50XP, 4-5=100XP, 6=Mjolnir is destroyed!
#formativechat
A1. There are SO many different platforms for students to use - voice and choice will go far as well as modeling them to gain understanding.
Please ... PLEASE bookmark this excellent article https://t.co/x9ShBvhMbC#FormativeChat
On the first day of class, I ask them to reflect (via Google doc) on what has and has not worked for them in math classes and what they are looking forward to this year. And I respond to show them that this is a conversation with no judgments! #formativechat
A1 prediction works best for me- I understand it’s Reflection we are talking about but any time I can get kids to predict first - I’m in - they want to be proven correct #formativechat
A1 So important to make any formative work, especially reflection, relevant to Ss. Topics they can relate to & really express themselves are great motivators #formativechat
A1: Two years ago I started Delay the Grade which forces Ss to look at and process feedback before receiving a rubric or grade. At first they resist, but when they dig deep and see growth, it works! Love it! #formativechat
A1: by graphing data, making progress visible and giving them prompted questions about what worked what could be improved etc. Model and schedule reflection time. #formativechat
A1. This mini video would be great to use for students to gain an understanding of what is involved in reflection. https://t.co/dQIpxMkdHp#FormativeChat
A1: We talk about how to grow from mistakes and that life is a learning process that never ends. I am transparent about my errors and how I reflect on them to create change. Then, I guide them through the process. #formativechat
A1: Model how you reflect and why you are so passionate about it. I know that when I take time to reflect on my learning, I learn more about me. Share. Encourage sharing. #formativechat
A1: I honestly wish I did a better job of this. I would say the one of the biggest things I did here was to play the role of partner in learning rather than stage on sage - I think it helped students become more comfortable with reflection
#formativechat
A1: Ss reflect after assignment submissions, assessing their level of mastery. We use their evaluations in our assessment conversations. Once they see their reflections as part of the process, hopefully they assign more value to them. #formativechat
A1: To spark initial interest in reflection I have a reflection question jar in the art room that we pull out a slip and it gets the ball rolling...the kids love being called on to pull the paper out and read it...that right there is the excitement spark #FormativeChat
A1: Having my Ss do a short blog paragraph to reflect on the lesson as a whole, a part of it, something we've read, or their day is one way I spark their interest. Currently using @wakelet as our blogging format. LOVE it! #formativechat
This is great, Adam. It takes courage to do this, and maybe even more courage to do it mid-year. But it defnitely builds the relationships and gives us insight! Great practice for all to adopt! #formativechat

A1- Since I teach littles I am at an advantage. I get to normalize self-reflection by modeling it, scaffolding it, and expecting it. I make it fun by using silly voices as I self-talk through my reflections. #FormativeChat
A1: Definitely need to model and stick with it. Had great discussion with @loliveira55 about giving #studentchoice on reflection to spark interest. Might need to give up some control. #FormativeChat
A1: We talk about how to grow from mistakes and that life is a learning process that never ends. I am transparent about my errors and how I reflect on them to create change. Then, I guide them through the process. #formativechat

A1. "students who are growing in their capacity to be self-directed, make better choices, and interact positively with one another. In order to do this, we have to give time for students to reflect and improve. Stephen Covey calls this sharpening the saw" #FormativeChat
My remediation class will soon reflect on their growth between 1st and 2nd 9 weeks testing data. They have a graphic organizer to track their data #dataliteracy#formativechat
A1: I spark student interest by first modeling reflection. I ask them for feedback, reflect on the feedback in front of them, and then share my improvement plan. I offer Ss opportunity for reflect on every @goformative and re-takes/corrections to act on it. #FormativeChat
A1: Give students time to pause and think about their learning. Try listening more and encourage Ss to share their ideas and reflections with each other. They need the time to notice their learning. #formativechat
A1: I ask students about interests and try to gear lessons towards each interest. Whether it’s putting a picture on a paper or doing impromptu research and talks, I do what is best for Ss, both academically and emotionally #formativechat
If reflections are not meaningful or related to their mastery, Ss will be less inclined to commit to and self-regulate reflective practices. #formativechat
What a great idea! Student blogs are not only a low-pressure way for Ss to engage in reflection, but also a great way for them to reflect on growth and gain a valuable 21st century skill! #formativechat
A1: Having my Ss do a short blog paragraph to reflect on the lesson as a whole, a part of it, something we've read, or their day is one way I spark their interest. Currently using @wakelet as our blogging format. LOVE it! #formativechat
Our music teacher and I were just talking about this the other day--how important it is to show how OFTEN we make mistakes! And how we don't get worked up and it's okay! #formativechat
A1: We talk about how to grow from mistakes and that life is a learning process that never ends. I am transparent about my errors and how I reflect on them to create change. Then, I guide them through the process. #formativechat
I model #reflection ! For ex, we just did a whole class analysis of our self-assessment data from first semester, I verbally reflected on my teaching. They gave me #feedback and then they reflected on their learning. Involved #science skills & #feedbackliteracy#formativechat
A1: I ask students about interests and try to gear lessons towards each interest. Whether it’s putting a picture on a paper or doing impromptu research and talks, I do what is best for Ss, both academically and emotionally #formativechat

A1 Provide opportunities for students to think about what they are learning, share successes and obstacles, and model by being reflective in front of the students. #formativechat
Hey Holly! Jumping in while doing #formativechat too!
A2: Just published a post by Kahoot that details how I use it for vocabulary and so much more! Also use @quizizz with the #Eduprotocols Fast & the Curious along with a spreadsheet to chart daily accuracy/test scores. #DCSChat
A2 I begin every unit by describing the upcoming content and project, and I ask the same set of three questions to help students connect their upcoming work to their own values. #formativechat
that's awesome, Sean! We love that you are using @goformative to help Ss self-reflect! Way to create an environment where they feel comfortable doing so! #formativechat
A1: I have students post questions for their classmates to use as they review their work. Ex: "How could I have rewritten my thesis?" This gets students thinking about possibilities for improvements, and they know they have an audience in their peers. #formativechat
Q1: Sparking interest always involves a puzzle, a prediction and something connected to their interests. Students love to do Vlog reflections on video or reflections that they will get to share and talk about with their peers. #formativechat
A1: Definitely need to model and stick with it. Had great discussion with @loliveira55 about giving #studentchoice on reflection to spark interest. Might need to give up some control. #FormativeChat
A2 we do #pbl and use it as part of the ongoing process, also with @Kidblog students reflect on their growth in writing, and just in conversations,#formativechat
A2: I create intentional stopping points where students engage in meta-cognitive reflection, preferably BEFORE the end of the assignment. We go back to our WHY almost daily. #formativechat
A2: I work with Ts, but I encourage them to reflect on their learning and what they’ve applied in their classroom with what they’ve learned. Reflection is time to breathe and think before moving on. #formativechat
A2 use the last part of the creation time to answer our 3 question model: What did you do? What did you learn? What questions do you have? #FormativeChat
A1- When I conference with my littles I have forced myself into asking my Ss what they think of their work or how they can improve it before I provide any feedback. It gets them into the practice of looking at their work. #FormativeChat
I’m entering student teaching next year, and in my classroom I want students to reflect through an exit ticket or a blog at least once a week to gage where students are in their learning and where they believe they are. #formativechat
A2: I have students submit work in a reflection bin. They are labeled “I can teach others!”, “I’m getting there”, or “I need help.” This way, I know how I can pull small groups and collect data. #formativechat
A2 Practice: dont assign a length to reflection, I stress to my Ss that reflecting is mental composotion, write until your thought is communicated #formativechat
A2: At the end of a unit, quarter or semester, I post a guided reflection. They reflect on what worked, what didn't, and how they are going to make changes. Then, they reflect on my work and give suggestions to me. I then use their advice on the next lesson. #FormativeChat
A1: When they ask me “how am I doing/is this ok” with their art I turn it back on them and say “You tell me...can you enhance it? Does it feel like it’s complete? How would you view this is if was a friends piece?” Really gets them thinking! #FormativeChat
A1: I have students post questions for their classmates to use as they review their work. Ex: "How could I have rewritten my thesis?" This gets students thinking about possibilities for improvements, and they know they have an audience in their peers. #formativechat
A2: Before students submit anything I encourage a 3 minute proof. They tend to rush and miss something so it’s proof that they reviewed! When working on a writing assignment, self grading and reflection occurs before we discuss or revise the assignment. #formativechat
A2: Reflect on Reflection. Reflection is what allows us to learn from our experiences: it is an assessment of where we have been and where we want to go next. ~ Kenneth Wolf Here's Gibb's Model #formativechat
A2: Practices include ways to empower S voice and give them choice. I ask how they could show mastery, how they like to practice math, where can they improve, etc. Answering these questions requires reflection. Me acting on it provides them reason to do it. #formativechat
A2: Research demonstrates that grades thwart student motivation. Instead, narrative feedback creates engaged, motivated students. So reflective practice should be a key component to that assessment narrative. The Ss contribution to the conversation. #formativechat
A2: Using @goformative to help with bell ringers, exit tickets, has been great. Work on the relationships and environment to encourage reflection. #FormativeChat
A2. In this article by @gcouros he states, "I know many classrooms have DEAR time (drop everything and read), so why do we not have time to simply write and reflect?"
Check out the article here https://t.co/vzxCz7Kgm7#FormativeChat
A2.2 As an English teacher, I embed reflection questions throughout the writing process. (But these could be adapted for almost any kind of project.) #formativechat
A1. There are SO many different platforms for students to use - voice and choice will go far as well as modeling them to gain understanding.
Please ... PLEASE bookmark this excellent article https://t.co/x9ShBvhMbC#FormativeChat
A2: End of the period reflection is typically, either by the blog method from my A1 or by me dropping a question mid-lesson or at end through @PearDeck or @goformative for quick survey/MC/short answer type reflection. #formativechat
A2a Most of my reflections are in #CER Routine is built upon what we learned, especially if that involved a misconception Learning is discovery not just what we already know #formativechat
I love blogging for Ss. It is a "real" platform, gives them time to use their voice, and comes more natural than writing for an artificial "paper". #FormativeChat
A2: I remind Ss they (hopefully) never leave the house without checking the mirror. We never leave a topic/unit/lesson without reflecting! We also use assessment for learning. I meet with all of my students for learning confences: They help me assess their work! #formativechat
A key word here that's so important--"Before" the end of the assignment or project. Reflecting on the process is just as informative (perhaps more so?) than reflecting on the product at the end #formativechat
A2: I create intentional stopping points where students engage in meta-cognitive reflection, preferably BEFORE the end of the assignment. We go back to our WHY almost daily. #formativechat
It is all about the hook! I try and make sure that they know that this is something important! I make sure that I have a sound rationale. I try and introduce an activity where Ss can get up and moving too. #FormativeChat
A2. Sometimes I provide a rating scale on Station Rotation/Blended Learning agendas. Students rate their understanding and focus/hard work that day. It's digital. Just need to figure a better way to hold everyone accountable, including the teacher. #formativechat
Q2 After a quiz or test students write down whether they studied, what they did well on and what they need to improve. This is kept in a log and is ongoing throughout the year. #formativechat
Right on! Helping students to understand why reflection is important + giving them some models is significant. Students don't get a lot of time to reflect in schools, so giving them purpose + practice make a huge difference. Here's a model I use with peer tutors. #FormativeChat
A2 My students write weekly dialogue journals where they share their week's activities both in school and out of school. I am able to celebrate their successes with them and also help when they are facing obstacles. I find out so much about my students this way. #formativechat
If I could offer a suggestion, then it would be to make sure you act on the information they share. This will provide them reason to continue reflecting and encourage in depth responses, because they know their voice matters. #FormativeChat
A2: I have students submit work in a reflection bin. They are labeled “I can teach others!”, “I’m getting there”, or “I need help.” This way, I know how I can pull small groups and collect data. #formativechat
I just LOVE increasing my #PLN with educators who share such a passion for learning! Here are some easy steps - follow them at the end of the chat to be sure you don't miss anyone. #FormativeChat
A2: Giving them thinking stems like...something I did well today that is like to continue is...a mistake I made that I’m going to avoid tomorrow...something I learned from this lesson that I can use in another subject... #formativechat
A2: My opening "Do Now" activities are all about reflection. At the end of class after the wrap up my "Exit Ticket" is always a reflection on what happened during class. #FormativeChat
A2: Teachers in my building provide lots of thinking time to kids and have kids talk with each other and use sentence frames that encourage reflection. Ss also have reflection time during and after 1:1 writing conferences with Ts. #FormativeChat
A2 cont: What I really like about them is the separate "categories - backward, forward, inward, outward, which gives multiple opportunities for growth : https://t.co/rUvHRiagv5#formativechat
A2: We have student conferencing regularly. Also within our PBL units students go much deeper into reflection- we model at the beginning but students generally embrace the process #formativechat
A2 I begin every unit by describing the upcoming content and project, and I ask the same set of three questions to help students connect their upcoming work to their own values. #formativechat
Before students can self report a grade, they need to use my feedback + peer feedback to reflect. No reflection means they get feedback and no grade. The form also asks what I can do to help them achieve the goals they set + facilitate their growth as learners. #FormativeChat
A2 cont: What I really like about them is the separate "categories - backward, forward, inward, outward, which gives multiple opportunities for growth : https://t.co/rUvHRiagv5#formativechat
A3: I love having a Google Slide that is like a hyperdoc where they can answer questions and talk about what they’ve learned in a variety of ways. Ex: Find a GIF that shows how you feel about learning ______ and explain it. #formativechat
A3. Short video included in this link that shares, "Holding the Reflection
For multiple learning styles, I have provided 2 formats to learn how to apply Reflection Canvas: (1) watch the overview video or (2) read step by step instructions." https://t.co/NJgxopa5Hc#FormativeChat
A2) I give students checklists to self-evaluate before they present in class. One for BUILDING the talk and one for PERFORMING the talk #FormativeChat#FormativeChat
A3: At first, give them the reflection questions. Later, after they have practiced, give them question stems and let them create their own reflective questions to answer. #formativechat
A3: peer review and think-alouds help with modeling good reflective practices. #feedback portfolios for collecting all feedback & reflecting in an organized way #formativechat
A3: I mode reflections. I also incorporate reflection during RW & WW by having students give positive feedback and even a suggestion (if applicable). Reflection should be constant and embedded into instruction. #formativechat
A3: Modeling deep reflection is important. I do an after lesson review where I ask Ss to tell me what went well and what really needed to be fixed about my lesson to help me improve. They need to see that even adults should reflect & why. #formativechat
My People's Choice session is all about engaging students in conversation about citizenship online with social and emotional learning. Cast your vote in the People's Choice session selections for #ISTE19! https://t.co/j7XEB9bmKj … via #digcitcommit#formativechat
You are very welcome! I don't actually like to always do "the same thing the same way" so I can keep engagement by using a variety of tools and methods. Your platform makes quick reflection an easy process. :) #formativechat
A3: Reflect out loud, in front of them. I like to write down my reflections on the document camera while narrating. This vulnerability builds relationships and shows them it's OK, and part of the process of getting better at anything. #formativechat
I think it really depends on the topic and the S. I know for me there are some things I can process quickly while there are others I can only gain a deep understanding after hashing it out with my #4OCFpln over and over (my form of blogging). #FormativeChat

A3: Ss must demonstrate agency over their reflections. Can’t be simply a fulfillment of a teacher’s requirement or direction. Exhibiting ownership over their thoughts hopefully will develop their meta- cognitive voice. #formativechat
A3: Allow Ss to reflect on not only their progress within lessons but the lesson itself. Allowing them to voice their opinion about what they are learning will allow them to connect more deeply with how they are learning. #formativechat
A3 #formativechat. Not a product, but to reflect on testing and thinking- I charted the questions kids were not sure of-confident of- and using the data from them, I numbered tables with 7-9-12-14 and sent kids to the tables to discuss / reflect—and the discussions were fabulous
A3: Once they have written their reflective blog posts, I have them pull them out and read them when starting a new project/activity. i.e. "you said that you would like to work on ___, now is your chance!" This is why I love that they are public :) #formativechat
A3: I think sometimes to go deep we as educators need to take them there with questions that poke in a little farther...with time they will take ownership. Also, practice practice practice...the more they do it the easier it will become #FormativeChat
A3: For me, modeling. Seeing that I reflect and set goals. Sometimes students need to see what good reflections look like and that I'm willing to put myself out on a limb, too #formativechat
One of my presentations at NCTE was about face-to-face grading + how it encourages richer reflection by making students part of the assessment process + demystifying grading. They're present and participative. #FormativeChathttps://t.co/CDQgtDtMWj
If you ask student to reflect, I find it important to RESPOND to their reflection. Ask them questions that dig deeper, keep the conversation going. It takes time, but all worthwhile things do. It needs to be a priority! #formativechat
Totally agree with f2f grading. It took me a while to be comfortable with it (Ss too), but as the year goes on, the Ss start focusing on learning more and more #formativechat
A3: Reflect along a learning progression on the way to the target result. Important in math to connect knowledge and skills as building blocks to higher order thinking. Connecting the knowledge along the way then reflecting on its application in their lives. #formativechat
A3-Use peer assessment as a way encourage deeper reflections. Provide a variety of ways to reflect (not just one way). Tap into social media to increase audience if possible (need to have established trusting environment). Sometime do just enough if for T only. #formativechat
Not necessarily, It depends on the S. For most Ss yes. We are social creatures. There are some Ss however where dealing with the interaction while working through their thoughts would be too much. Everything in Ed comes down to the ind S. #FormativeChat

A3: modeling, prompting and giving them tools to use. Allowing them the time to reflect and not shoving it in somewhere quickly shows them there is value in it. Practice makes progress #formativechat
Wow, what an amazing chat! I have to go back and reread it all!
Thanks to all! This was such a pleasure to be chatting with you all tonight!
#formativechat
Definitely! One of my recommendations in the presentation from the research into F2F grading + my own experience is to wait until there's trust built between you + your students, otherwise it can feel scary + like a "gotcha," precluding meaningful reflection. #FormativeChat
A3: Developing and Using Reflective Practice https://t.co/uT8p3ICFZD What can be done to help develop the critical, constructive and creative thinking that is necessary for reflective practice? #formativechat
Wow, what an amazing chat! I have to go back and reread it all!
Thanks to all! This was such a pleasure to be chatting with you all tonight!
#formativechat
A3: It took me some time, but I just found the chart I wanted to share. I use “The What! So What! Now What” to discuss critical reflection when I do my coaching with teachers https://t.co/elEHySiJCn this helps prompt reflecting on teaching practice #formativechat
A3 To deepen reflection I ask my students follow up question. I also encourage journal recording. I have found that the students tend to go back and listen to their journal entries when they are recorded. That is why I have been using @flipgid for journaling. #formativechat
A huge thank you to @mpilakow for bringing some great questions and topic tonight! Join us next week when . @heARTISTatWORK is our guest moderator! #formativechat
Shout-out to our awesome guest host tonight, @mpilakow ! We loved the topic and questions she put together! It was a pleasure collaborating with her!
#formativechat
A3: To improve & deepen reflection, Ss need to see relevance & benefit. This means I allow my kiddos to make improvements or changes after the reflection process. They then value the reflection because it results in a grade increase! The benefits become tangible. #formativechat
Thank you for an amazing #formativechat chat once again - Wonderful! I have a few glitches with my computer so missed some of the chat. Will be going back in to check.
Thanks for steering the #formativechat crew tonight, @mpilakow ! Have a fab week, everyone! Don't forget #LearnLAP starts now and #tlap begins at 8 PM CST.
That's awesome, Michelle! Getting students to recognize their own growth sounds like a fantastic way to spur interest in ongoing reflection! #formativechat
To encourage reflection allow Ss to reflect upon the rubric used for their evaluation. Invite them to explain the rubric to a peer in a discussion forum. #formativechat
The truth? Republicans started the #TrumpShutdown — and Democrats are working to end it. @realDonaldTrump, it’s time for you to stop standing in the way of re-opening the government. Let the Senate vote! #EndTheShutdown
