Yeah! We have a rock star in the house tonight! Make sure you share that video you recorded!
To me it means that you don't just talk about raising test scores or implementing a new program but you actually do it.
A1: "Doers get things done" means that Ts keep what's best for students in mind while designing tasks and fulfilling obligations.
"Doers" are those who are willing to take risks in the classroom. Ex. Ts who sit in PD and implement in the classroom day after
A1: doers make things happen. They're your pace setters and initial believers in mission and practice
A1: Own the learning. Your learning. Ss learning. Do something everyday to move learning forward for everyone.
Yes, too many meetings about meetings to plan meetings.
Amen! Too much hot air wastes time - ain't nobody got time for that!
A1-I love this quote! Doers keep going they don't give up!
A1: That means working hard no matter how hard it is to do it. It means taking risks. It means finding a way.
A1. Results are indisputable and certain people seem to do this with ease
This statement is a mantra for anybody who wants to succeed in a complex organization.
A1; We have an action-bias at . I like the mantra, don't tell me, show me. Getting started is your smartest move
Stay focused on the goals. And the mission.
A1: They don't just talk about it. They take action and transfer a vision into a reality.
Q1: Respond to the statement: "Doers Get Things Done". What does that mean in education?
Yes! Doers don't waste time - they understand you have to start!
Too often we forget to do what's best for students when getting things done. They should be the center of decisions.
A1 While I believe in contemplation & measure, the abstract must be eventually transformed into action. Then reflect & refine.
That's why it's important to call each other out on motivation and premise in decision-making processes.
YES! Glad to have you here, Bethany!!! Love that you brought in the need for vision to be made visible!
I agree , We affect lives of many with the intentions behind our decision making. If they are misplaced it's harmful.
I feel doers can be seen working for the greater good when the greater good hasn't been created or identified yet
Sorry I'm late---just finished a webinar, & between celebrating & cleaning up kitchen, I'm late. :(
I agree we should do what is best for the students.
A1. Stop talking about change/innovation and just do it. Lots of people talk but aren't brave to do
The why is what matters most and must stay in focus.
A1 Gonna leap to the chase: means we're producing way too many "communications" majors.
***Q2 is coming up in one minute!
Doers are not afraid to have a fierce conversation when needed. Especially when it affects students.
YES! Doers need to push the envelope! They take risks on what's best for kids!
Absolutely! They know what they want and how to get there!
always need that lens of "whats best for kids" https://t.co/WBPMBOWvsy
A1: "Doers get things done" means that Ts keep what's best for students in mind while designing tasks and fulfilling obligations.
Keep it posted high in the sky & remember they are impressionable kids that need guidance & you affect their futures.
Q2: What are the top characteristics/attributes you see in educators and school leaders that get things done?
That is because you are a DOER ...way to model the topic for tonight
its hard sometimes to take those risks but we need to remember "best for kids" is always our lens https://t.co/iOnj5QH8o0
YES! Doers need to push the envelope! They take risks on what's best for kids!
A2: They overtly and clearly communicate the vision into action!
A2. Have the ability to see the 'bigger picture' and what needs to get done
agree, some happening with reflection process. https://t.co/urjk57iKhc
That's why it's important to call each other out on motivation and premise in decision-making processes.
A2 collaborative but will make the final call when needed, always putting Ss needs 1st https://t.co/sDytomJIUl
Q2: What are the top characteristics/attributes you see in educators and school leaders that get things done?
A2: They have a vision. They set goals. They research.
A1)Doers do not look at the obstacles they may encounter because they are focused on giving ALL Ss what they need to be successful
A2: Clear, unwavering focus on top priorities.
A1 Means Edu needs to respect teens who will be butchers, sledge-wielders, bakers, and upgrade their learning accordingly
A2: Those who get things done are motivated to grow themselves and others. Dave joining late from Iowa
A2 Model the expected behavior.
A2: Doers are risk-takers. They push the status quo.
Empathy, Listen, Involved, Consider Multiple Perspectives, Dreamers, Fearless, Driven, Focused, Calculated, Intentional
A2: reminds me that they are the ones who say yes first and then find a way!
Yes....THIS https://t.co/C7whUGEp53
A2: Those who get things done are motivated to grow themselves and others. Dave joining late from Iowa
A1 Doers don't wait for others to do it-regardless of your title you work to make things work & help all students & families
A2: Empathy, Listen, Involved, Consider Multiple Perspectives, Dreamers, Fearless, Driven, Focused, Calculated, Intentional
A2: goal driven but able to show the path. Willing to share the message. Creates paths when current ones don't lead to success
A2: They give ownership to their staff. They support their decisions. It gives them say, buy in and builds future leaders.
A2 Teacher autonomy goes hand in hand w/ integrity & responsibility. Academic freedom creates innovation & moves education forward
A2: they communicate. Always. And I mean Communicate with capital C. Which is complex and difficult.
BAM! It's not about working hard - it's working smart! This is definitely one of my take-aways already!
Yes! Able to adapt and see and accept multiple routes to the end in mind.
Giving the staff a say works.
A2. Integrity and focus. And they foster teams. They aren't interested in going it alone.
A2:student-centered ppl who have passion & drive to continually make things better/Encouragers who push you to strive to be better
YES! Doers are definitely coachable - they take feedback!
Q2 https://t.co/FJsx8RgYy9
Q2: What are the top characteristics/attributes you see in educators and school leaders that get things done?
Trust your teachers but provide support and guidance.
A2: See relationships between/within goals & can multitask accordingly. No problem delegating & supporting members of team
I agree. Creating a new path is the sign of a true leader https://t.co/y2iFH0SG9E
A2: goal driven but able to show the path. Willing to share the message. Creates paths when current ones don't lead to success
Sorry I am joining a little late! Abby McWilliams Pre-Service teacher at Ohio Dominican University!
great to see you tonight!
Please explain more about academic freedom & innovation https://t.co/rZbIMaZx6b
A2 Teacher autonomy goes hand in hand w/ integrity & responsibility. Academic freedom creates innovation & moves education forward
A2: a true passion for Ss & wanting to see them grow no matter how much work it is. Educators/leaders who do that are great
Key word there is relationships https://t.co/vS70TSfe4B
A2: See relationships between/within goals & can multitask accordingly. No problem delegating & supporting members of team
***Q3 is coming up in one minute!
A2-Continuing to ask questions!
A2: Transparency and passion!
Welcome, Abby! Glad you are here! and I are co-moderating tonight's
So true. Teachers are so creative!
Absolutely! Doers are learners and lead with questions!
A2: Passion. Every decision they make is not for themseleves, it is for their students!
A3: "That's the way we've always done them" get in the way of getting things done.
A3 When people do not have a growth mindset.
A4: Self-doubt, hesitation, or allowing doubt to creep in when others say, "Can't be done."
That gives me chills that I can't just rest on what I've done in the past - every day I have to prove myself!
A3. "The way we've always done things" is a huge barrier. Legacy can be paralysing for action.
A2 Willing to be uncomfortable to ensure Ss are prepared for their future not our past. Students always come first
Attitudes of I have done this before. Politics.
The key to learning is the quality of questions that are asked. An art that outstanding educators have mastered!
A3 life-draining energy suckers, lack of accountability, a belief that things are out of their control https://t.co/pHb5gvedv4
A3: Unnecessary paperwork and meetings. Leadership that micromanages is also terrible.
Ouch! I agree - most of them are ones I cook up in my own head...
A3: Attitudes of I have done this before. Politics.
A3: Negativity/Fixed Mindsets. Meeting new ideas with road blocks. Thinking: Not how can I make this work, but why do I have to
Asking questions fosters new thinking and new thinking manifests action.
A3: EXCUSES get in the way.
A3: time. Opinion/perception of others. "We've always done it that way." Fear of the unknown. Afraid someone else can do it better
Distrust. School needs to be family. When people don't dig in the trenches together, progress is halted.
A3 When compliance trumps creativity, compassion, & common sense, nothing productive occurs.
Yes! I agree! When did this become a reason for an excuse?
Gotta love - he nailed it!
A3: Not willing to go out of their comfort zone and not giving their full effort to their teaching.
A3. Also happiness vacuums! You know, those people who really like to crush ideas at any opportunity!
Q3: What are things that get in the way of people getting things done?
Ouch! That is something I self-reflect on all the time myself.
I like that. I do believe Ts need to reach out to their community of peers to help foster innovation https://t.co/bNdgV5HkVd
The more you constrict Ts & force them to use pacing plans & scripted programs, the less that creativity & new idea… https://t.co/2f81DbgxPe
I agree! We are reading the 5 Dysfunctions of a Team book - #1 is lack of trust!
Yes, it's unfortunate that they can't turn the attitude around.
A3: Many changes, Miscommunications, ineffective/insufficient communication, fear, box thinking, preconceptions, misconceptions,
A3: Need to persevere. When you are tired, when you think it can't be done, find 1 small thing to do, then another small thing
A3 Inability to distinguish the urgent from the important
Easy for teachers to rail on, but principals have bosses too, and paperwork is for compliance.
True - my goal has to be to figure ways to minimize it...
Empowering is a great suggestions.
A3. I also think a lack of knowing 'HOW'. Processes are so important. More so than just out of the box solutions.
My favorite principals I worked for were happy to bend rules/district expectations for staff doing great work.
***Q4 is coming up in one minute!
100% agree! The ego has to diminish - you can't do everything!
Experience and lessons learned, Neil

Too many starts not enough follow throughs!

A4: A well polished elevator speech that I share with EVERYONE
Teachers, parents, or eduleaders... The best motivators are a balance of leadership, love, laughter, & learning. All 4 are equal.
A3. LP’s just for compliance. Takes away true collab time.
Q3: What are things that get in the way of people getting things done?
A4: Answering the question together - not working in isolation to share the solution later.
Starts are a waste of time if it's just an idea. Needs to be an idea w/ action steps https://t.co/vcx296x08S
Too many starts not enough follow throughs!
A4: Allowing the whole team to "ideate" in coming up with many solutions - builds synergy!
A4: Questioning and listening: Once direction is set, ask how it's going. Listsen to answers. Then collaborate, problem-solve.

A4: stakeholder sessions w/ emphasis on stakeholders. Schools need to value and invite crucial partners to be part of the fabric
Great to see you on , Bill! Thanks for being here to share your wisdom!
Q4 https://t.co/i7Fm1sLE2A

A4. Invite community to come to learn new skills, especially involve new technologies.
A4. Trust your team. Have high expectations of those around you and unleash them on stuff that matters. Authorship is so powerful.
I agree - job descriptions written too tightly stifle creativity!
Love it! Great way to partner and learn with the community!
Love this phrase "unleash them" and the phrase that follows: "on stuff that matters." So critical.
A4: You mean other than Google Stuff? I'd say blogs, videos, and Podcasts are very effective... https://t.co/PxLTtX3VTZ
Q4: What tools do you see eduleaders using that are effective in motivating their community to turn ideas into tang… https://t.co/7byKGEZusU
A4: Google tools & GoogleClassroom have helped the Ts & Admns collaborate & coordinate actions
A4. Default to yes. It can be tough as a Leader but try to say yes more often to ideas of your team
You should hear it with an Australian accent - much more powerful! Makes my spine tingle!
A4: Inspire people to share the vision. Ts need to feel involved in the process, even if the end result isn't what is expected
***Q5 is coming up in one minute!

A5. Lead by example. Every day.
A5: Invite others to join. Point out the "doing spirit" you see in others.
A5: Get them to be risk takers and owners. The classroom is their laboratory!
A5: clear purpose that is collaborative and focused on needs to help improve student learning
A5: When asking to be a doer-tell them why-let them know you recognize their strength(s) and want to emphasize it. Empowering!
I agree - Leaders have to "Model the Way" by being transparent with others in the process
Simply listen and empower. Encourage risk takings.
A5 Not being afraid to jump in and get dirty. Ex: Wiping tables in lunchroom, mopping the floor.
A5 The way I inspire my Ss to become doers & deep thinkers is to cultivate a classroom of willingness, wisdom, wonder, & worth.
I agree - I don't think we praise or recognize others enough.
A5. Simply listen and empower. Encourage risk takings.

A great quote from John Quincy Adams. One of my favorites.
YES! Just like our students, adults need time to pursue their passion projects!
A5. Remember that collaboration doesn't mean getting along all of the time. Creative Dissonance Spurs action too!
We become a real community when we can have collegial dissonance for the sake of our students!
A5: Empower your staff to run with their ideas. Empower your students to do the same.
***Q6 is coming up in one minute!
Q6: What materials or resources would you recommend to educators who are looking to build a community of doers?
A5 Say yes and give permission and encourage risk taking. Risk taking promotes creativity and innovation which creates energy
A6. Seek out growing your PLN. A lot of doers out there.
A6: I think teams need to overtly be taught the Design Thinking principles - I am working with teams on this; it's a game-changer!
A6: Read Above the Line by Urban Meyer
A6 Strength Finder assessment for stakeholders. Identify how each member can work well with one another.
Wow! Great connection of that resource to this topic!
A6. Edcamp edcamp edcamp. Special saturdays of awesome collaboration and creativity. Learning in action.
Build on their strengths.
A6: Individualizing PD-should look like an Edcamp-instead of a one size fits all model-doesn't work for Ss doesn't work for Ts
Thanks for a great tonight - huge thanks to for co-moderating with me!
A6: Give time for innovation (20% time?) Reward innovation. Reward magnificent failure. Let teachers choose their growth.
