Hi to #MEMSPAchat from Connecticut. Those who attended or followed last month’s #EDParentCamp, where the subject was preventing the summer slide, may want to tune in!
Welcoming all to the last #MEMSPAchat of the school year.
Challenge now: Text or call 2 friends to see if they will join us tonight....
Questions starting 8:07pm.
TOPIC:
Summer Time: Learning, Leading & Growth
A1: Spring data (local and state) is used to identify those students who need additional support over the summer. Teacher thinking is combined with those data sets to identify kids #memspachat
A1b: Looking at criteria for next year to make S's more accountable at the middle school level... i.e. required summer intervention if they fail both semesters or possible retention..? #MEMSPAchat
Becky Biedermann from Marysville, checking in! Dinner took longer than expected @JunctionBuoy I’ll be lurking for a few until we get settled. #MEMSPAchat
A1 Teachers make recommendations based on a number of factors (many center in classroom assessment) and it actually starts in our district at “spring” conferences in late February #MEMSPAchat
A1: Students on IEP's that need added support, in addition, our students on an IRIP, students who are in need and need books @ home for the summer. We started in April! #MEMSPAchat
A1: this year wanted to identify ALL students for summer learning so we did a district wide book drive and we are getting books into the hands of every elementary student! In addition we have a limited summer school program which is invite only based on reading data. #MEMSPAchat
A1: We use iReady reading scores to identify (along with teacher referrals) & have several options with summer library programs, Madonna University programs, and some district Title programs. #MEMSPAchat
A1: Multiple metrics like Dibbles, NWEA and (most importantly) need at the elementary level out here. We wish we could do more to create exciting opportunities that draw the kids we need most!! #MEMSPAchat
A1: It has been an ongoing process with our RTI program. We put together book boxes, set them up with @RazKid accounts, @khanacademy, and sign them up for summer enrichment. We have done away with "Summer School" #MEMSPAchat
A1: We create summer packets for all our students with skill builders and enrichment activities to keep their brains active. I wish we offered more catch up growth opportunities though...#MEMSPAchat
A1: To start, we look at anybody below the 60th percentile on the NWEA. Multiple data points are helpful, but teachers know students best. We rely heavily on their recommendations. #MEMSPAChat
A1: We have certain accounts open all summer for kids, we have an ELL reading program for our EL kids with EMU, and programs for special ed. students. We start identifying in May and work closely with community education to get kids registered. #MEMSPAchat
A1: It has been an ongoing process with our RTI program. We put together book boxes, set them up with @RazKid accounts, @khanacademy, and sign them up for summer enrichment. We have done away with "Summer School" #MEMSPAchat
Any classroom teacher can provide a recommendation based on a number of factors. But the truth is that every student need some support in summer to avoid a long learning gap. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A1 - I challenged a student last week to read 25 books this summer and to log it for a prize in August. She reached goal yesterday. Sometimes, it’s just a little motivation.
A2: Big plans for summer support in 2019...in the meantime, open school library weekly for all students. Volunteer in the local trailer park for "Meet Up and Eat Up" each week. Provide LLI to targeted students in late July and early August for a jump start #memspachat
A2: We have our Summer Enrichment program available to all Ss in the district. Our librarian opens up the Library every Wednesday for the families. Again, Raz, Kahn, ABCya, Starfall...etc..#MEMSPAchat
#HVSREADS this summer is our first time attempt at offering our students books at local events like movies in the park, at the local libraries and more. Trying to get books into their hands! #MEMSPAchat
A2: we are 1:1 and all students have Raz Kids & IXL available. We can monitor who uses it and who doesn’t. We need to analyze data and determine if there is a correlation between participation with the apps and reduced summer slide. #MEMSPAchat
A2: #memspachat last year we ran a summer "Camp Read" program. We focused on 1 book, had a "campout", and started each session with Playworks type team building activities.
A2: Our ELL tutors run a reading/writing program in collaboration with EMU Writing Collaborative. We provide transportation from a local trailer park area so kids can come to school in the summer #MEMSPAchat
Now it is kind of like a summer of #TLAP activities. Students show up because they want to, not because they have to. Plus, we feed them. So far, we are getting that return on investment. #MEMSPAchat
We have literacy and math camps, including @KidsStandard writing camp, but they are offered through Community Ed. In advanced classes in middle school, there are requirements to complete certain online chapters and take tests. A2 #MEMSPAchat
A2: We offer a summer tutoring program for students on an IEP or identified at-risk at low/no cost taught by a certified teacher. Also Lexia for students who were using during the school year and RAZ Kids. #MEMSPAchat
A2: We scheduled 9 Tuesdays over the summer to deliver free books and food bags to identified families. Our Bookmobile is pretty amazing... all volunteers and donations! #MEMSPAchat
A1: Students on an IEP or students whom parents have inquired about summer learning. We are fortunate to have a Community Education that offers summer opportunities. Conversations begin in May. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat A1 - I challenged a student last week to read 25 books this summer and to log it for a prize in August. She reached goal yesterday. Sometimes, it’s just a little motivation.

Our daughters are in plenty of summer (camp) enrichment programs. But as I was helping my 3rd grader today with homework in math, where she's getting intervention, I wonder what we can do from home during the summer to keep up math. Open to suggestions. #EDParentCamp#MEMSPAchat

A4: Of course, wouldn't want my team to get bored! We are diving back into Cultures of Thinking and Making Thinking Visible over the summer for our continued focus in the new year. Next year COT and culture are the major topics of our focus. #MEMSPAchat
A4: I always give my teachers a book, so we can have common reading over the summer. It's optional, but I feel that just all having the same book in our hands can lead to some common goal setting & positive energy! #MEMSPAchat
