Welcome to #BookCampPD talking about the Culturize "Core Principles" in action in our schools. I am @mrbgilson from Magrath Alberta taking a break from my morning work out to moderate the chat.
Good morning, friends! Sara from Cincinnati here! 👋Happy to join everyone for a lively chat this morning & can't wait to get some fresh air later on today! We finally have sunshine here! #bookcamppd
Addison from Tennessee. HS Social Studies teacher. So stoked for today’s (and next week’s) #BookCampPD on @casas_jimmy#Culturize. It’s the foundational book of a summer teacher experiment I’m starting. Can’t wait to discuss!
A1: I don't think it makes me a champion but I make sure to say Hello every morning to students in the hallway. This week one wrote about how much it means that I showed I care to take the time. #bookcampPD#curiositycrew
A1. I have thousands of photos saved on my hard drive of school celebrations during my tenure as an administrator. We snapped pictures of every occasion and shared them on school's website. Families with relatives in countries all over the world could view them! #BookCampPD
A1: Our FRYSC goes out of her way to make sure that all families have the resources they need for living. If a student is homeless, she finds them a home. If they need a job, she helps. She goes above and beyond. #bookcamppd
A1: Three or four times a year we have "Snack Attack." We meet in our commons area, kids get snacks the teachers bring, and the P reads off great things that kids and staff have done lately. #bookcamppd
A1: When students are having a tough time, I listen to them. If they’re misbehaving, I have an open mind about why they’re doing what they’re doing.
I smile. I listen. #bookcamppd
A1: We championed by showing up last weekend for our Theatre Program’s production of “Steel Magnolias.” Students both on stage and behind it were amazing - and a group of us were right there in the front row to cheer them on!!
#bookcamppd
A1) At a parent teacher conference another teacher and I stood up for a young girl who had been struggling. Her mom emailed both of us and just said how much she appreciatedus having her back and helping her. You have to show the parents just as much as the S’s #bookcamppd
#BookCampPD A1: we are evaluating a class that incorporates interdisciplinary goals of English and Spanish to help support students who need help in writing but exposes them to Spanish as well. It’s in the works and I’m so proud to have a role in it.
A1 keep pushing myself to find opps for Ss to connect w/other Ss for learning, to share their work w/Ts, admin, public, being available for Ss at any time #BookCampPD
A1. Met many teachers who would take a pie in the face when students met their goals in reading. They were celebrating the students' success! #BookCampPD
A1: We champion our students every day. Sometimes, it can be as simple as saying that we see an issue from their perspective and championing them to other adults. #BookCampPD
I see staff members champion for kids every day when they take the extra time to make sure each student gets what they need-staff members who visit kids home sick, stay late to tutor or come watch kids play football on a Saturday-build relationships to be a champion #BookCampPD
A1: 👨🎓 constantly “in trouble” with a “poor attitude” opened up about his background to me privately as a the son of an undocumented immigrant. He felt isolated and outcasted. I worked with him and he went from failing to graduating. Just needed an advocate. #BookCampPD
A1: I think it is in the little things we do everyday. The way we get to know the interests and passions of our Ss that allows the connection and relationship to grow. #BookCampPD
A1: our 1st graders are really struggling this year with behaviors and routines. I am really working to listen to what they are telling me and making changes to support them. #BookCampPD
A1: Completely blew up my classroom to make the learning process differentiated, self paced, and fun. Couldn't have done it without my awesome co-teacher, @amysmartis !#BookCampPD
The personal contact should never be undervalued its huge! HIgh-5s; fist bumps, & go be awesome are how I start every morning-set the tone for the day & kids will rise to it! #BookCampPD
This is so true. It's unfortunate that sometimes we also need to champion kids to other teachers or adults, but sometimes it needs to happen #BookCampPD
A1: We champion our students every day. Sometimes, it can be as simple as saying that we see an issue from their perspective and championing them to other adults. #BookCampPD
A1 Paired a 5th grader with a struggling 4th grader reader to be a reading buddy since he wasn't getting his reading practice in at home. #buildingrelationships#BookCampPD
A2: I am blessed to work in a school that not only cares what their staff is interested in learning about but supports them in that learning. Our PD has been teacher focused this year and guided the whole school plan. #curiositycrew#bookcampPD
A2. This @ASCD book from 2008 shared many specifics for building teachers' capacity. The link shares the 1st two chapters. https://t.co/WS3lMkk8jK#BookCampPD
A2. They have developed the desire to continuously improve and learn. This learning must be developed, nurtured, supported and practiced on a regular basis. The environment and culture of the school must honor and encourage these dispositions. #BookCampPD
A1: Our intervention specialists are always thinking outside the box to provide support for our struggling learners. They take ownership of all students and do whatever it takes to help all students. They are so creative and awesome! @amysmartis#BookCampPD
WOW! I bet a pillow would come in handy right about now. I am sure the students will long remember the special night and all of you being there for them. #BookcampPD
A2: My principal has been an outstanding support for me. He reminds me that I don’t HAVE to know all of the answers, but I DO have to find the COURAGE to ask the questions. Challenging me to be a better person makes me a better educator! #bookcamppd
A2) our principal really lets us have the reins. She isn’t trying to push anything on us but supports us in all of our risk taking. Then she’s there to support us more when we fail to help us get back up and keep going! @jobro22#bookcamppd
#BookCampPD A2: my district administrators are offering a cohort for Teacher Leadership! It’s such a wonderful opportunity to cultivate that “every teacher is a leader” mindset. I can’t wait for it! Go Team Millburn!
A2: Our new principal has been open about his love for serving students and meeting them where they are. He’s always listening to his teachers and seeking out new ideas for helping our students succeed. No idea is off the table. #BookCampPD
A2 finding both teachers’ strengths & students’ strengths is important. Leverage the strengths of individuals. Highlight and showcase them. Provide opportunities for staff & students to amplify their voice!! #BookCampPD
A2: Since I have been at BMS, the principal has always pushed me to go beyond my comfort zone by giving me opportunities to explore new strategies. He’s also been battling cancer but is there advocating for kids. #bookcamppd
A2: I am blessed to work in a school that not only cares what their staff is interested in learning about but supports them in that learning. Our PD has been teacher focused this year and guided the whole school plan. #curiositycrew#bookcampPD
A2: My principal gives me the freedom to try new things and never judges. He's encouraging of any new ideas and if I bring a new idea to him, his response is "How can I help support you?" #BookCampPD
A2 get out of your room and see your colleagues is a start & this includes kids doing museum walks or presenting their learning to others-when we see what our neighbors are doing it provides us with opportunities to ask "how can you help me do that" #BookCampPD
A2) Our staff is constantly reading and collaborating how to improve student outcomes: behaviorally and academically. Backing up this need by research is so important rather than personal bias #bookcamppd
I had the wonderful opportunity this year to attend the Orton-Gillingham training around multi-sensory phonics learning. I was then able to help build capacity by championing for the entire K-3 team to attend the training. It has been wonderful for our Ss. #BookCampPD
A2: My principal is willing to listen to our individual perspectives without judgment and give a balanced answer. The students, parents and teachers all know that they will get a fair listen. #BookCampPD
A2: this shout-out goes to @tonyahwilliams our school’s principal and @PalmaTeresa13 ESL coordinator
Thank you both for ALWAYS supporting my ideas for leadership and support for our ELLs #bookcamppd
A2: my principal is a listener. He doesn't listen to solve the problems, he listens and then guides a discussion allowing the individual to quite often solve their problem. Whether it is Ts or Ss. It's a great example to me as a developing admin. #BookCampPD
A3. Community "Beginning of the School Year" parties along Mississippi River, attending monthly community meetings, United Way Day, involvement in parades and celebrations. #BookCampPD
A3: Small town with not much to do. School functions become "THE" event to attend. Lucky to have staff and admin that make the Basketball Games and Plays a community event. #BookCampPD#curiositycrew
Right. Get to the root of what is bothering the student and then the learning can take place. Of course they can learn... It is a cop out to say they can't. The teacher is frustrated and wants to give up. #BookCampPD
A2: I had an administrator that took a chance on me to build the STEM program at our school. I felt so supported and empowered. Since, I have helped create a Makerspace with a small group of colleagues. They support all of my ideas to innovate in the classroom. #BookCampPD
This is such a big deal. It seem so simple but when I hear other Ts who don't have admin like this, I become so appreciative to have that autonomy! #BookCampPD
A2) Our school offers lots of workshops & teacher-led PLCs, which I really appreciate. In terms of Ss, our Ss get involved w/lots of service learning and project-based learning. I think this kind of learning really helps Ss to grow & develop. #bookcamppd
A3. Wisconsin does a phenomenal job with Community Education and Involvement. Here is an example from one school district I worked in https://t.co/6CRzzos8oc and another school district who offers amazing Parent University https://t.co/eoIh5qfDLy#BookCampPD
A3 One of our ESL Teachers started an English class for our Ss parents during the day. Many of our ESL moms are now more engaged in participating in school activities and volunteering. #BookCampPD
A3: I love when engage in service TOGETHER - faculty, staff, & students together, as one family! We recently completed a food drive & delivered packages to residents in the area. It was a wonderful way to building community both inside school walls & outside of it! #bookcamppd
A3: Pancake dinners after every home football game. Sponsored locally by the community, everyone who shows up gets pancakes. As one of the most diverse school in the district, this event not only feeds but also builds community. #BookCampPD
A3: It seems simple, but having an active Facebook page we've found to be vital to our PR. Not only keeps people updated but also to share our story! #BookCampPD
A3 our district provides parents of #ELLs and immigrants with Parent Centers to help them learn English, integrate into the community, volunteer, learn abt school in America and soooo much more! #BookCampPD
A3: we use social media a lot. We also have activities and programs throughout the year that get kids into the community like pitch in day where Ss clean up the town after the snow all melts. Monthly kindness assemblies, family dance, christmas program #BookCampPD
A3: @wmirvinelem is getting ready for the annual Spring Fest where we come together to HAVE FUN and interact with one another school&community TOGETHER
Thanks @MrsBurris213 for organizing it!! 🌟🙌🏼💕
#bookcamppd
Same here. We’re the largest building in the town. We do things and people show up. We hold school bbqs and other events to celebrate our community. #BookcampPD
Our Elem. campuses partner with a local food bank to do 'Appetite for Reading'. We deliver food once a week during the summer along with books for the children to read each week! #BookCampPD
We are really working to engage our community. We have recently become a Title1 school which brings added $ to help support community activities. This week we had a multicultural night and had community w/out Ss attend. #BookCampPD
A3: Pancake dinners after every home football game. Sponsored locally by the community, everyone who shows up gets pancakes. As one of the most diverse school in the district, this event not only feeds but also builds community. #BookCampPD
A3: From the superintendent down, our school involves the students, parents and the community in planning & implementation. They really do listen & offer opportunities for stakeholders to voice ideas and concerns. These concerns/ideas are taken seriously & considered. #BookCampPD
A3 we hold fun events for kids and the community like back to school bbq and just had a volunteer dinner for our volunteers for the school year. #BookCampPD
A4: I think a Merchant of Hope is someone that models perseverance on the hard days. That works to build a culture that celebrates everyone and works to promote the community. That is my goal in working with both staff and students #BookCampPD#curiositycrew
Social media @Twitter@facebook@Snapchat@instagram all allow us to tell our story & focus on positives-also helps families see what happens on a daily basis-we need to focus on the awesome & not let others define our story #bookcampPD
A3: we use social media a lot. We also have activities and programs throughout the year that get kids into the community like pitch in day where Ss clean up the town after the snow all melts. Monthly kindness assemblies, family dance, christmas program #BookCampPD
A4. Always believed that reading was the key that would open doors for any student. Literacy was the 1st priority and goals revolved around it. #BookCampPD
A4: Greeting the students. Letting them know that you care about their interests, passions, and who each one is as a person at school and outside of school. #BookCampPD
A4: Instilling hope can begin with something as simple as using a person’s NAME. Being recognized, seen, and heard as valued & celebrated members of the community starts with looking someone in the eye, saying hello, & making them feel wanted! #bookcamppd
A4: By reading books like #Culturize that inspire me to change, open myself up to caring for all my kids, and sharing what I’m learning and observing in my room and halls with anyone who will listen. Positivity breeds positivity. (Disclaimer: Not perfect at this.) #BookCampPD
A3: From the superintendent down, our school involves the students, parents and the community in planning & implementation. They really do listen & offer opportunities for stakeholders to voice ideas and concerns. These concerns/ideas are taken seriously & considered. #BookCampPD
Wonderful! I wish all schools did this---it builds a trust in the school and alleviates some stress for the families. I see a lot of very young kids translating important meetings for parents. Help the parents and you help the kids. #BookCampPD
A4: Encouraging them and showing them their options in the future. Some don't believe that they could be a college student. Our counselor is amazing at providing hope and encouragement! #bookcamppd
A4: Instilling hope can begin with something as simple as using a person’s NAME. Being recognized, seen, and heard as valued & celebrated members of the community starts with looking someone in the eye, saying hello, & making them feel wanted! #bookcamppd
Are you as excited as I am? One week from today, @casas_jimmy will join #BookCampPD and discuss his book! Be sure to have any questions for him ready to go. #BookCampPD
A4: with Ss I smile, listen, hug, & talk with them. For Ts we have a sunshine jar that we give $ for the positives to use at the end of the year for our celebration. #BookCampPD
A4: I have found a Grass Roots approach is very successful when implementing new ideas. I love to share my upset and downs with anyone who will listen and invite Ts to come see what I'm doing, not only to learn, but also give feedback. Awesome PD! #BookCampPD
A3: It seems simple, but having an active Facebook page we've found to be vital to our PR. Not only keeps people updated but also to share our story! #BookCampPD
We had a parking lot, where students were dropped off each morning, that was dangerous - I greeted each car and walked the children to safety each morning. LOVED talking with families and having a positive beginning to every day #BookCampPD
True, but often the many attempt to project perfection on social media. That lack of authenticity can dishearten and discourage. The struggle is real. #BookCampPD
