#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Hello #HipHopEd. Every man, including Stan Lee, is problematic. But I am thankful that he challenged dominant narratives and opened up the possibilities to tell our stories.
Stan Lee dreamed of being a Novelist and it manifested in telling stories through pictures and words. He took an art form to levels that have impacted generations #HipHopEd
Just took my copy out to look at it! @TaNehisiCoats says "Marvel Hip-Hop covers is a wedding album for a marriage that no one could have arranged, but is as natural as any." #HipHopEd
You can draw similarities to Hip-Hop crews that evolve into entrepreneurial ventures to super heroes that come together to form alliances and families #HipHopEd#marvelcomics
#StanLee created characters whose strengths were just as much mental and intellect along with physical strength. We need to live these realities in this Universe #HipHopEd
Gracias siempre #nuffsaid
Rogue is my favorite Marvel character because I first encountered her narrative as a preteen empath, absorbing people’s emotions, and just couldn’t shake people once they came into my life even if they left mine.
You can reimagine Magneto’s and Professor Xavier’s views on Peace, Power and Prosperity for mankind through the lens of debate. #LincolnDouglass#HipHopEd#StanLee
Always considered how notion of creating an alias through comic character & considering "possible selves" through stories is similar to a MC creating that alias to create narratives through lyrics. #hiphoped#StanLeeForever
There are many spiritual narratives within the stories that can serve as context to have discussions with young people about the role and impact of good and evil and who decides #HipHopEd
I know bro. So much of me was shaped by his work too. Hugs from MN. You heard our our AERA superheroes and social justice panel got thru right? They ain’t ready. #hiphoped
In the introduction, @TaNehisiCoats says "Like my heroes in Hip-Hop, Marvel heroes were the orphaned and the rejected, men and women whose powers had often come to them at great cost." #HipHopCovers#HipHopEd
Sadly many young people have to exist with an alias of being smart and liking school because in their neighborhoods being intelligent is not relevant! #HipHopEd
I went to a school where I did not fit in. As both a "gifted"and "problem" child, I had multiple psych tests done on me. I needed the story about mutants going to a special school with other mutants. I loved Professor X. #HipHopEd

Don’t let people tell you what you CANT do. Stan creates Spidey despite editorial resistance and convention. He also has a support system (Joan said go for it). Take creative risks. #hiphoped
The way @therealredman was introduced via an experiment gone wrong as Reggie Noble mimics Bruce Banner turning into the Hulk on a microphone. Time for some action! #HipHopEd
Red Locust is very recent but her story is relevant, specially now that we have to battle xenophobia and anti-migrant sentiments from the Mexican right wing and American white supremacists. @humberto_ramos#HipHopEd#CaravanaMigrante#LocustSisterhood
Stan looked for the newness just like Jay. While others were biting his style he was off making Black Panther, Falcon, Storm, and so forth. Do what hasn’t been done before. #hiphoped
Comics transcend generations so Marvel created many opportunities for adults and youth to connect and communicate in meaningful ways #HipHopEd#MarvelComics
Examine the Marvel Universe and identify the presence of academic excellence in various settings. This can be culturally relevant pedagogy because academics are presented as relevant to the culture #StanLee created #HipHopEd
I often refer to @chrisemdin as Professor X and the rest of our #HipHopEd squad as mutants the way exhibit the power to blend Hip-Hop and Education together for the betterment of both
#StanLeeRIP#truelegend A free style artist whose lyrics came 2 life through the movement of his words & characters. Undeniably a life reppin’ his own hiphop playlist over the generations. #hiphoped
Comic Books invited children/adults to a whole different genre of literature than what they were used to...I remember so many kids that hated to read but loved reading Comic Books...#HipHopEd
While I grew up loving comics, I was constantly reminded by neighbor (who became a well-known artist later in life) that Stan Lee constantly took and was given credit for other peoples ish.
Does this Sound like something that occurs OFTEN in HH + the music ind?! Ijs..
#HipHopEd
Acceptable to whom tho? Is it acceptable that comedians might tell jokes someone else wrote for them? Is it acceptable that authors & screenwriters have editors & uncredited co-writers? Is it acceptable people STILL think Stan Lee created characters Steve Ditko & Jack Kirby did?
I remember growing up and playing Spider-Man with my friends and pretending to be Mary Jane being rescued from going down my slide. #HipHopEd#MarvelComics

Spidey showed me that a hero wasn’t a hero because of their powers, it was their struggle for justice & right despite sometimes overwhelming odd and personal cost. #hiphoped
Dart has an entire dissertation (loll) about this on his TL so doesn't make sense to repeat said info. Check it out when you have time.
So, as we continue to make connections + "valorize"🙄 Stan Lee, let us root ourselves in truth/reality as we rock in tonight's #HipHopEd chat
Saddest aspect of Stan Lee's passing was his natural charisma & talent for getting out there & being the face of Marvel Comics led to him doing hella interviews, speaking engagements, engaging the growing fanbase & putting his name on everything so he alienated his collaborators.
One take-a-way from #StanLee is the fact that he didn’t ask for permission or acceptance for his approach to story telling. Our students should be able to present their knowledge just as boldly and on their own terms #HipHopEd
It’s true. There was a fight to get Kirby credit. Much like Bob Kane and Bill Finger (Batman). It’s a lesson about what happens when you put $ before squad. #hiphoped
