Well, Hello again #DitchBook
My name is Sean and I'll be moderating the chat tonight. I am an eCoach/Innovative learning specialist w/ @Five_StarTech and work with the Ts and Ss at #NLCS.
Growing up I always wanted to be in Ms. Frizzle's class and go on a field trip!
Hi, #ditchbook ! I'm Jen, a MS Sci teacher EdTech Support Specialist in MO. Being conference season, I'm out of the classroom a bit...feelin' like... π
Hey #ditchbook friends! Matt, #ditchbook author from Indiana currently at Lake of the Ozarks, MO, at #interface2019. You missed it ... I wore a skirt in a keynote today!
Excited about tonight's chat and @SEANJFAHEY moderating!
A1: I love the dialogue that can take place inside Classroom. I can leave comments for improvement and students can ask clarifying questions. Makes me more accessible than just class time. #DitchBook
A1
During some of my observation hours, I have seen teachers use Google Classroom as a way to differentiate instruction for students. It seemed to be very effective because students were able to work at their own pace. #DitchBook
A1: I love it for easy organization, and more importantly, sub planning. In addition to writing sub plans, I can easily post a message on Classroom for my students alerting them of work expectations for the day. #ditchbook
A1: It limits the amount of paper, allows distribution of and access to resources to be much faster and easier, and is a great tool to facilitate a collaborative environment. #ditchbook#ditchthatcopier
A1 I think Google classroom makes educators more accessible. It also allows students to help one another and collaborate; it's a game changer when schedules get busy (especially for college students!) #ditchbook
A1: #GoogleClasroom allows for collaboration and feedback that were previously not possible. Students can also access work anytime or any place they have a internet connection. #ditchbook
A1: Different through differentiation. Assignments can be rolled out to some or all. Easily assign choice/menu boards and Ss can easily attach/turn in their evidence of learning. #ditchbook
A1: Late, but HERE! Not only do I NOT have to take papers home, but can assign things to some Ss and not others, add resources, keep track of everything, and assist the Ss who missed class that day without lifting a finger. Then there's FEEDBACK! Grading facilitation! #DitchBook
Google Classroom allows me to have a central hub for all my students to find their work, collaborate with each other, communicate with me. It also allows me to easily contact parents and differentiate assignments for students to meet their needs. #DitchBook
A1: I love it for easy organization, and more importantly, sub planning. In addition to writing sub plans, I can easily post a message on Classroom for my students alerting them of work expectations for the day. #ditchbook
A1: The SUPERPOWERS of #GoogleClassroom:
π₯ Streamlined grading
π₯ Easy access to resources
π₯ Quick collaboration
π₯ Fewer piles of papers on the desk
π₯ More time for what MATTERS
#DitchBook#gttribe#googleedu
A1: #ditchbook Yes @emosier3 ...SUB plans! Was able to leave screencasts of directions for students on Classroom so I could still "teach" even though I was away.
A1: It allows you to create an individualized learning experience for all of your students. It can empower your students to take control of their own learning experience. Freeing the teacher to support those students who need it. #ditchbook
Q1: My secret favorite use of #googleClassroom - post sub plans recorded with @Screencastify to Classroom. The students always knew what was expected of them before the sub! #ditchbook
A1: I love it for easy organization, and more importantly, sub planning. In addition to writing sub plans, I can easily post a message on Classroom for my students alerting them of work expectations for the day. #ditchbook
Google Classroom lets me bring so many more Engaging activities to my classroom. Ss know right where to go to find them so learning time is not compromised finding resources. #ditchbook This week we played Coordinate Grid Battleship posted in #googleclassroom & the kids loved it
A1: in my experience Ss become more responsible for their own time. I'm not telling them what to do. They are figuring it out themselves. Way less pressure on me. #ditchbook
A1: #GoogleClassroom makes communication and collaborations much easier. It also allows me to easily differentiate assignments for my students and meet their needs. #DitchBook
A1 I think the Question tool is a simple and very effective way to teach DIFFERENTLY. Ts can now hear from ALL students. Ss can have dialogues with each other #DitchBook
A1: Love all the apps/sites that let you post straight to Classroom. Just showed teachers how to post links to @IXLLearning skills straight to Classroom without leaving the site - and differentiate different skills to specific students
#ditchbook#googleClassroom
A1: Students Who are absent are still able to know what was done and what the assignment was and come to school prepared with questions to fill gaps instead of βdid you doing anything while I was gone?β #DitchBook
Miss some of old features. used 2b able to have a blog topic and post Ss blogs there where they could read and give feedback. That is gone. Had to do it as a question when new one rolled out bc I did not want it as an assignment. I might have to rethink this next year. #ditchbook
A1: It allows students to take more ownership of their learning! It allows them to work at their own pace, has great organization for the Ss to find things, & students love how an assignment is already in their drive for later! #ditchbook
Yes! GC helps you buy back those wasted minutes of giving directions or passing out supplies. Students know right where to go and begin learning #DitchBook

I like to drop an audio file into classroom if I receive a text from the sub that is less than satisfactory. :) I can tell so and so to stop or to help so and so. Freaks them out. #DitchBook
A2. I am able to build an online community through it. It also provides a place for me to share innovative assignments like our Greatest Showman American Revolution unit or the giant game of multiplying fractions. #ditchbook Also using it for PD!
A1: Students Who are absent are still able to know what was done and what the assignment was and come to school prepared with questions to fill gaps instead of βdid you doing anything while I was gone?β #DitchBook
A2 Google Classroom allows teachers to engage more authentically with their students. In our technological world many students feel communication via social media and online platforms is their most comfortable and familiar form of interaction. #ditchbook
A2
I have seen a teacher use Google Classroom to define an assignment, but then use it to give students creative freedom on how to complete it. #DitchBook
A2: Not only can I differentiate activities in my classroom. I also love how easy it is to give thinking questions where I can send comments back and forth until the student solidifies their knowledge. So much easier than passing papers back and forth. #ditchbook
A2: One of the best ways Classroom can be used is for the Guardian email summaries. Once parents are invited once, the summaries they can receive in their email make the teacher's job that much easier! #ditchbook
A2 Digital Breakouts are a favorite. Kids love them! Made possible and simple to create through Google Slides, Google Forms and Google Classroom. Also so many options and possibilities with #Googledrawings Have kids create an image to show their understanding. #ditchbook
A2: #GoogleClassroom and #GSuiteEdu allow my Ss to create collaborative projects with our partner school in France that would not have been possible in the past. It allows for learning to go beyond the 4 walls of the classroom. #DitchBook
A2: Interconnected apps - graph data, embed the chart in a presentation, link to the slides from a doc. Easy to learn. Easy to master. #ditchbook#GoogleEDU
I am not able to use this feature. It was too much for me. Since I am gradeless I did not want Ps thinking kids were falling behind so I turned it off. I guess not all features are for every user! #ditchbook
A2: The new drag and drop feature with the topics allows me to categorize our class work by standards and really helps organize the learning. #DitchBook
Especially Private comments. However in my experience I'm Not sure many Ts allow students to openly comment on assignments and posts. Ts don't like not having control and student post nonsense things #ditchbook

Google Classroom is POWERFUL when the teacher is absent.
Write sub plans and post them in Classroom from your bed in your PJs.
Check in on students throughout the day. (If you want.)
Make changes on the fly. Almost like you're there! #DitchBook#googleclassroom#gttribe
A1: #GoogleClassroom allows me to have more eyes by looking at student work at all times, during lunch, at home, it allows me to click, give feedback, hits all at once. It keeps my kids accountable because the know I can see their work with a few clicks #ditchbook
A2: One of my favorite functions in #GoogleClassroom is the discussion feature. This allows my students in different sections of my US History class to interact with one another. #ditchbook
Q3 #DitchBook#GoogleClassroom has gone through some changes this school year so we are all learning new things.

A2: Use apps like AVR Pro-Free version (Awesome Voice Recorder) to record myself teaching too, so that I can drop it in Google Classroom (synchs with Drive), so that Ss who miss class still know what I said. Also record guest speakers if Ss are absent. #DitchBook
I like to drop an audio file into classroom if I receive a text from the sub that is less than satisfactory. :) I can tell so and so to stop or to help so and so. Freaks them out. #DitchBook
A2: G-Suite tools have replaced my need for expensive graphic design software. I can design and create so much using G-Suite like hyper-drawings and apps with Slides. Then I show students how easy it is. #ditchbook
A2: I create Google Classrooms 4 units instead of just a class. With the Classwork option, I can build unit, breaking it down into topics. When we are done with the unit, I kick everybody out & move to the next classroom. Next year, I'm ready to roll again w new Ss #ditchbook
A2: It allows educators to take learning to a whole new level! I never thought I would give 2nd graders Google slides to show their thinking & now that is how we start our day! They also like how we do menu items for them to choose activities to show their learning! #ditchbook
A2: I was hooked on #googleClassroom as soon as I had my first feedback/revision conversation with a student that led to trackable, visible growth.
(And this was before the upgraded grading console, comment bank, "+" tagging, and other newfangled inventions!)

A3. Use topics! I also created a section for important info and leave that at the top of classwork. There I house links and a Google Doc with everything kids need #ditchbook

Innovate with #GoogleClassroom ...
π Share a collaborate file with students quickly
π Leave instant feedback and private comments
π Make quick digital copies of files for students
π Do a quick poll or assessment with a question

A3 I am not entirely familiar with Google Classroom from the educator's side; however, as a student I'd say teachers should make sure they post with purpose. The platform can get a little overwhelming if too much information is released in an unorganized way. #ditchbook
A3: Students used to miss a lot of things when they were posted as an annoucement, and I didn't want to post them as an assignment (my OCD doesn't like seeing that!). The Class Materials options coupled with Topics has saved my life! #ditchbook

A3: I love using the Topics feature to keep everything organized. I also love that I can now easily move around my assignments and topics much easier than before. #DitchBook
A3: I encourage teachers to number the assignments in Google Classroom (001, 002, 003, etc) and do the same thing in their grade book. So easy to say βyou need to do number 3β #DitchBook
A2: #GoogleDrawings has become the low key hero of my G Suite world. I've finally taken the word "Photoshop" out of my vocabulary as a verb.
#DitchBook

#ditchbook A3: The "schedule" and "draft" features...have assignments ready the night before and they drop into each hour when needed so you don't have to think bout it during a busy day. :)
A3: You can paste your scoring guide into comments and complete it right inside the new grading window. I also love using topics and materials when students don't need to respond. The new updates are amazing. #DitchBook

Whenever we do @PearDeck Flashcard Factory, I export their set to Quizlet and post it as a material to whichever unit topic and the kids have the link to practice their vocabulary anytime, anywhere! #ditchbook

A3 Post to all classes at once is a favorite trick for me. Also prescheduling posts... great for sub days coming up as well. Make a copy for each student in one click... NO MORE STANDING AT THE COPY MACHINE! #ditchbook
A3: In addition to the Guardian Summaries feature, I am a huge fan of the "Schedule" option. I can create the assignment and then schedule it to post during class, so it isn't accessed by students beforehand, nor do I have to remember to post it as I'm teaching! #ditchbook
Q3: Top 5 Tips for #GoogleClassroom:
1. Organize with Topics
2. Teach Ss to use the Classroom Calendar
3. Connect Ps w/ email
4. Post differentiated assignments to different Ss
5. Embrace the "Share to Classroom" Chrome Extension

I never had really thought about putting younger students in online community before. However, if that is what the students want that I will have to figure out a way to include it in my lessons. #ditchbook
Be consistent. Put EVERYTHING in #GoogleClassroom, digital or not. Eliminate "what did I miss?" and "What should I do now?" Replace those statements with you giving them the stink eye. #googleEDU
A2: I saw the idea to use Slides to make a "Choose your own..." Story. I am inspired to develop an activity where students choose their own recorder piece based on their own strengths/interests for a piece to play. They can #collaborate by creating the choices first. #ditchbook

A3: If you are looking to better deal with students posting inappropriate things in Classroom, invite an admin as coteacher. Kids seeing an admin name in Classroom makes a difference. They think they are watching. #etcoaches#DitchBook

I have had students as young as third grade! And we are partnering with a first grade class now using Google tools with them! #ditchbook Have you seen @PintoBeanz11 For littles stuff??
A3: I really like recording feedback in @Screencastify (and even leaving them in the comment bank) in Google Classroom gradebook. This allows me to more effectively communicate with my students. #DitchBook
My second graders love it! We use it everyday for all kinds of different things! So easy to get information, assignments, assessments, & websites out! #ditchbook

A2: all things Google allow for teachers to provide opportunities for Ss to reach great π heights... from collaboration to animation π« on Slides and curating ππcontent on Keepπ‘, students learn to evaluate β and share with π² others! #ditchbook
YES! I have Ps log into it at curriculum night and have the Ps presentation there for them to run. I even have them do @Flipgrid from Google Classroom. They need to learn to use tools Ss are using #ditchbook
I walked into the teacher's workroom today to pop my popcorn (lunch). The math teacher looked up and said, "I'll be here awhile" and gestured toward the copy machine. I looked confused, she saw the popcorn and said "Nevermind." :) I really didn't think about copies! #DitchBook
Q4 is our last on for tonight #DitchBook crew.

A3: I have a βWarm UPSβ topic that I keep at the top of my classwork tab and change out the singular post there every day. Usually itβs a PDF with all class warm ups included so i can post to all classes in one go & they can scroll through and answer what the need to. #DitchBook
Being able to track student progress and giving students a visual of what assignments they have completed, in progress, or are missing all on one easy-to-navigate page is such a game-changer! #ditchbook
A3 I use the select student feature to assign differentiated material. For example I assigned just my Spanish speakers the Spanish hour of code @csfirst units. #ditchbook

We don't just want Ts and Ss to be on devices all the time, but how can #GoogleClassroom help us when we ask students to be "Hands-on"?
YES! Always have students create a doc, slides, draw, etc from Classroom Assignment. Automatically saves in drive and titles that file with assignemt and student name #DitchBook
Easy access to resources is a big one! No forgetting assignments in class or having the excuse of not being able to access them! Google classroom has really made individualized learning so easy. #ditchbook
A4. Directions posted in classroom to hands on activities. Can include collaborative work that does not include tech- like find a partner, interview, collect data, and share . . .Lots of possibilities #ditchbook

A4 I am currently part of a journalism teaching team as part of an education course. Google classroom has allowed me to keep my fellow teachers up-to-date when I work with our students. It helps keep us connected and informed! #ditchbook
A4- By posting the directions in classroom so ss can use that to help understand what they are suppose to do with a hands on activity.
-Teachers could post a video of how to do it too.
#ditchbook
Iβve seen this before but why am I just now thinking I can use this in my math classroom for a βWhat do we do next?β solving equations activity??? #DitchBook

A3b: I have to say, though, I liked having the topics to the left of the assignments so that I could click it and quickly go to them rather than the new system. Just not used to it yet. Still love topics, just like the current navigation options...less. #DitchBook
A4: I like to use the question feature to spark a think-pair-share style activity. Have students respond to a prompt in Classroom, find a partner with a similar (or unsimilar) response & discuss, and prepare to share with the class aloud or also on classroom #DitchBook
A4 Can provide questions for students to follow while they build fractions from Legos, or where they turn in a recipe they recently converted to serve the entire school. Its not about the tech, its about the learning! #ditchbook
Currently facilitating a Google Cohort and using Google Classroom to help with assignments and so teachers can see what it is like on the student side! #ditchbook
#ditchbook A4: using Google Forms to quickly allow students to answer questions about a hands-on lab, then those responses are then Autocrat into a lab form for me to grade later...they get more DOING & I can spend time with them doing and "grade" later.
A4: T makes short instructional videos for each station of a station rotation. Organize all in Classroom. Laptop becomes a clone of the T as Ss travel the room.
#NoMoreRepeatingDirections#DitchBook
A4: #GoogleClassroom tip for blended learning ...
Create an assignment students do offline. Assign it through Google Classroom.
Use the "Mark as complete" option so students show it's done.
Use Classroom for grading/feedback. #DitchBook
right? Students also love other emojis too! But this is a great way to add some more visual appealing to GC.
Also I just learned right click in a text field on a chromebook and you can select emojis! #DitchBook
A4: I think since it allows for multiple file types and assignments, it's flexibility can allow students to demonstrate their learning in multiple ways! #ditchbook
