#EdTechAfterDark Archive
"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com

hi Jim how's it going? Welcome to
A1: model, talk it up, have Ss teach teachers!
Ok, what did I miss with the intro? Montel Jordan? First concert maybe?
hey Chantell great to see you
backstreets back alright! Welcome back
Junior High Music: Guilty of loving the Hanson brothers! WOW !
A1- limited application, gimmicky or too specific (platform, use, scope, scalability). Be upfront about practicality
Juggling amazing chat and board webinar. Want it all!
hey Bethany welcome! Glad to have you
hi Kimberly! How are you?
Hello from PA! I teach Alg to 8th graders, Apps Cert Trainer, & new .
The gimmicky approach is the fastest way to turn away those already resistant to edtech https://t.co/o6oSB2YStJ
A1- limited application, gimmicky or too specific (platform, use, scope, scalability). Be upfront about practicality
A1: A 'fad' would indicate something not to be around long. So w/ that's an approach I don't find ed-value in.
A1. When it simply replaces paper & pencil or serves only one purpose. We can always come up w/a new purpose--get creative.
this how we do it! Favorite band from Middle School lol
Mmmbop, ba duba dop / Ba du bop, ba duba dop / Ba du bop, ba duba dop / Ba du, yeah, Yeah! https://t.co/nbpa8vCA1B
I still remember the Hansen poster on my bff's wall!
So easy to fall into the “digital worksheet” business.
An edtech fad is flashy and fun, but doesn't get students thinking as deeply as one would like.
yep, I’m thinking about a few apps that have gone away pretty quickly when the novelty wore off.
Peeking in and checking out - loving the memes! :)
Thank you for this! I imagine that this will be in my head for at least a few days! :)
Doing great, Zac! How are you?
Q2 coming in less than a minute.
A1: Falling into the S of SAMR
Sorry for my tardiness! Busy learning in grad school! Justin from Baltimore. 4th grade teacher. what up?
Hard to pull wheat from chaff though
To all the proverbial of the world, you had a good run 😜 https://t.co/KyMEXAX5G2
yep, I’m thinking about a few apps that have gone away pretty quickly when the novelty wore off.
A1-Always changing webtools inhibits learning and comfort-resulting in a "fad"
I totally agree, substitution is fine to start, but we have to "redefine" how our Ss learn https://t.co/pCmcgO6FWy
A1. When it simply replaces paper & pencil or serves only one purpose. We can always come up w/a new purpose--get creative.
Welcome, Justin! in the hizzouse!
A1 -I have seen many fads in 25 years. The fads or gadgets which enhance learning stand the test of time.
A2 Compatability. You don't want to lock up your information that you either create or gather. https://t.co/KLcwfF4XM6
hey Darin welcome, feel free to jump in at anytime
A2: I allow myself one day to say, "That's neat!" Then I get down to asking, "How does it revolutionize S learning?"
A1: A fad is something that starts really fast and doesn't have much meaning behind it. Too flashy is a first sign to me.
Can kids use it to create? Does it offer them options for creating?
A2: Self-Check with immediate feedback to build skills right away for growth. Suggested assignments for add. instruction.
A2 I look for tools that will enhance the learning experience, a tool that makes the learning better
A2: As a district, anything Google integrated is a good starting place
I link it to a skill and not a app or tool. Ss should know how to do things multiple ways.
A2 Kid friendly, easy to use/navigate/etc. I also look for value. Is the time that the Ss use is maximizing learning?
welcome Justin, just about to get to Q2
A2: Efficiency. Time is a huge demand on Ts & Ss. The pressure to "figure it out" but quick. https://t.co/Rkt1q1Ba34
I didn't even think about too specific. That's so true!
A2: How's it going help with my Ss and their learning?
a2b Privacy nowadays. You need to be careful what these Apps gather and share about Ss.
A2- I no longer "search" for web tools. If my twitter PLN says x tool is great. I start playing. That keeps me busy.
This is important. Are we “filling” time or “maximizing” time? https://t.co/FoROvXWqrQ
A2 Kid friendly, easy to use/navigate/etc. I also look for value. Is the time that the Ss use is maximizing learning?
Sometimes things stay around for longer than they should though.
A2 - Like Google Forms, things that make my job easier and more productive are what I'm looking for. That impacts kids.
A2: If I can't figure it out in minutes, I won't stick with the tech tool. Deal breaker.
A2- flexibility of use by age and subject. Meta-cognition skills, FUN!, low entry! FREE!
I also like options. Ss need more than 1 tool for photo videos.
This should apply to all teaching methods - using or not!
A2: Will it get Ss creating, collaborating, or communicating? Can I use paper & pencil and get the same result?
A2: How the learning will be influenced? To just use a tool for the sake of using a tool is just being a tool ;)
A2: Clean & simple presentation with a learner centered purpose. All my tech needs to empower my students first & for most
I have my set tools. iMovie, among others. Now it depends on collaboration.
Yes! I love my virtual PLC's! https://t.co/8O6xD9fojS
A2- I no longer "search" for web tools. If my twitter PLN says x tool is great. I start playing. That keeps me busy.
B-I-N-G-O! Our PLN can be such a great help with topics like this!
I look at best app site and my PLN too.
This has become my new norm too! https://t.co/83AFObWiY9
A2- I no longer "search" for web tools. If my twitter PLN says x tool is great. I start playing. That keeps me busy.
We keep preaching that is no longer separate from ; it IS education
Absolutely! If it's simply a time filler, lose it!
Don't we have to be willing to pull at all? Sometimes the journey is the fun, yes?
so what is ur fav tool right now PLN member?
I limit # of apps. Don't want Ss to get overwhelmed with choice.
Q3 coming up in 1 minute...
“OK class, post on Google Classroom, download from Edmodo, and submit to Schoology. Also email your abstract.”
Yep, it's so easy to get lost for hours doing this!
Effective productivity is essential in our ability to serve our students! https://t.co/fOxcaRLKML
A2 - Like Google Forms, things that make my job easier and more productive are what I'm looking for. That impacts kids.
I must admit that I'm sad there isn't more to this clip! :)
Absolutely. Playing and discovering apps is our job not our Ss. Play, Use the gimmicks. Discover what works
A2: across platform availability. Clean interface. Depth. Simplicity.
I feel the same way! Plus I live in the Kindergarten world where we need to keep things simple!
I love it. No S has ever asked me for specialized PD on tech we were using. They just start playing
Don't forget I need a hardcopy by 3PM.
A3: Nothing is wrong with it. Nothing’s wrong with a hammer and chisel, either, but some tools for tasks are antiquated.
welcome to great response!
I've been excited about Tons of options. Plus they keep updating. They appreciate feedback
A3: Nothing is wrong with it, if your Ss are getting the best possible and most relevant learning https://t.co/L4RMhNyPS9
can. Increases Ss engagement. /must start somewhere.
There is nothing wrong with paper and pencil, or an iPad, Chromebook, etc. How we encourage thinking is what matters.
A3: there is a time and place for all tools, my job is to maximize Ss creativity and synthesis with what I have pencil2ipad
A:3 we all types of learners, those who prefer paper & pencil are welcome to use them, those who prefer a a smartphone,,,
A3: There is nothing wrong w/Pencil+Paper. Tech prepares your S for 21st-century careers as he/she now competes w/the WORLD
A3. I tell them there's nothing wrong & then ask if I can show them what their kids can do w/tech.
A3: Let's let the students decide. That's why I offer paper/pencil and digital on most things.
A3- 1-legibility/clarity 2- organizational skills 3-enhances grammar & critical thinking 4-not limited by time/distance
A3 Whether we like it or not, we live in a tech world. I would prefer my Ss to be a creators over consumers? .
A3: Great! We use all strategies in our edu toolbox here! Would you like to visit so we can show you all our tools?
A3: Bold answer: It's not about you. We are preparing Ss for a world that is still being created https://t.co/6MyehR9wMt
A3: A paper and pencil are tools just like a computer. The proper tools need to be used at the proper times.
A3NOTHING! Just like there's nothing wrong with a record player. It's simply not always the most practical tool for the job
Great Point Matt, Ss must be able to advocate for their own needs, while still navigate resources https://t.co/TF3T5sUYwe
A3: Let's let the students decide. That's why I offer paper/pencil and digital on most things.
“But my Ss need to know how to write in cursive!!” My friend’s signature is literally 2 scribbled lines
A:3 we teach all types of learners, those who prefer paper & pencil are welcome to use them, those who prefer a smartphone,,
Love this Laura - keeping the focus on what's most important! https://t.co/miPviAmiUo
There is nothing wrong with paper and pencil, or an iPad, Chromebook, etc. How we encourage thinking is what matters.
Great line! "Creators over Consumers" https://t.co/0gVZWUnvwi
A3 Whether we like it or not, we live in a tech world. I would prefer my Ss to be a creators over consumers? .
A3: "What would you rather use ___?" Ask the students what they want.
The class you grew up in is obsolete we have to move forward with all tools!! So true! https://t.co/5nqGlKKR9H
A3: Bold answer: It's not about you. We are preparing Ss for a world that is still being created https://t.co/6MyehR9wMt
I want to put this on a bumper sticker
EdTech included Paper, quill & ink, and slate/chalkboard too. Right tool for right project.
What about the art of touch typing, being able to use a keyboard & mouse? but everything's touch screen now!
I have 4 of them in storage in the media center. Blows my mind!
then why not shorthand? thats much faster?
but the TEST is on a computer with a mouse. Sigh.
Respectfully;certain uses of could/should make the utility of a pencil relatively obsolete https://t.co/OAwnxY7DAs
A3: Let's let the students decide. That's why I offer paper/pencil and digital on most things.
A3: a lot less likely that other students/the public will see it (limited audience)... Lack of interaction
Love this idea of creators over consumers. You need to work that into a class motto!
Parents have such a hard time comparing their experience w/education and their kid's.
is not just computers. https://t.co/bNkNaw1j6L
EdTech included Paper, quill & ink, and slate/chalkboard too. Right tool for right project.
Absotively Posolutely. https://t.co/SOgGcpBXGD
Parents have such a hard time comparing their experience w/education and their kid's.
A3 Ss still use.Just like when you got a microwave, you kept your oven. It's about using the right tool at the right time.
don't get me wrong; I ❤️ records! I OWN 2 of them. But I wouldn't listen to them in my car! I've evolved 😂
Q4 coming up in 1 minute...
It's the tool for the task. Brains learn better with handwriting- Research supports.
the ability to learn & adapt is at the heart of the matter, what Ss really need to know
We may collect vinyl, but we all stream our music. For real. https://t.co/fdWiGKnZxf
don't get me wrong; I ❤️ records! I OWN 2 of them. But I wouldn't listen to them in my car! I've evolved 😂
the idea of global connections and publishing is very difficult with Pen and Paper
Microwave cookies- no bueno!
Really. Mine, too! Cursive is still good to learn.
for blogs/eportfolios, Google Classroom, Twisted Wave, and for videos
I teach elementary you know. SO TIRED OF THIS QUESTION. "What about reading historical documents?" Uh, google?
This is where should comment about whether to microwave tacos..
I do wonder if it's the handw itself or invlv of cognitive funct. Can we engage in the same way?
Comfort in the past is a cushion with holes in it.
Adding that to my list of things to read, thanks for sharing!
So true, but some students still like to create using their hands. We still have to remember that.
A4: Dont over think the Flipped Lesson, find videos on YouTube that support benchmark or skill, don't reinvent the wheel
A4:Start w WHY? Once you have them hooked on its purpose, move on to the WHAT & HOW, but they must be sold on WHY first
A4- I need the why before I try. If we see no need, if pedagogy doesn’t change, then the buzz word is just that-Insincere.
A4: Don’t try to emulate other T’s so much. Find your own groove and roll with it.
This would be translated to be eloquent and relationship-rapport-building, but yeah feel free to sticker that.
Genius Hour: Give Ss freedom to find their passion, support when they fail, that's part of the process how to get up and go
I look and listen first. Ask ss if they want to try if I think it sounds good for our purposes.
A4. Coding: know where you want your Ss to go, what you want them to learn. Hitting it randomly can turn kids off.
like so much else is not one size fits all
Agreed. & I ❤️ showing the real world implications of through passion projects https://t.co/gB8TWdfUn6
So true, but some students still like to create using their hands. We still have to remember that.
Great question, what is it that connects and how can we find another perhaps stronger connection? https://t.co/qC2AKQI643
I do wonder if it's the handw itself or invlv of cognitive funct. Can we engage in the same way?
A4 There's so much out there that I get overwhelmed. So my advice to myself: You can do anything, but not everything!
A4: make sure to have a clear why and focus on one initiative at a time. Once you master that, pick another one
What else are you guys doing in your classrooms? Anyone Skype or want to Skype? Pen Pals? Chain Mail?
Great Advice for making sure the Technology is a part of your instruction! https://t.co/6swrqx4DzC
A4: Don’t try to emulate other T’s so much. Find your own groove and roll with it.
a clear “why” is a must. https://t.co/e96xWBdzUI
A4: make sure to have a clear why and focus on one initiative at a time. Once you master that, pick another one
What can't a pencil do? Collaborative Real Time projects at a distance. Take photos, create multimedia - final projects.
Absolutely. Otherwise data gets mucked up.
A4: A little bit at a time. If you like what you see, or Ss do, keep going!
absolutely. Emulate the greats, but don’t feel confined.
did genius hour used to be called constructivist teaching?
Don't try and do too much either. Brain will not like it.
I've been focusing on paperless classroom right now. Still haven't quite mastered that.
Agreed. Then I suggest they share a pic of what the pencil/paper made on our class Twitter.
A4: just put control in hands of students. You don't have to be expert. So many tools so well done Ss will run with it
Don't be afraid to jump in. Sometimes exploring is our purpose.
Q5 coming up in 1 minute...
what's your LMS? We use and digital turn it bin and digital binder
A4: Does it fit your style? Does it fit your class? Can your Ss handle it? Can you handle it? Will it benefit your Ss?
Like driving down a road 2 see where it goes. I've learned mad navigational skills that way!
I had a T who taught us calligraphy. Came in handy when I made my own historical docs for projects
I had a hard time with this for years. Use ideas from Ts, but make them work for you too.
I am worse-missing out entirely. Lost track of time applying for coaching/facilitating jobs. Sorry! https://t.co/UwB5XueB0Y
we use - I have used it for four years and love it.
Whoops. I guess I"m off of the bandwagon Sometimes I don't have a why until I understand my Ss can do w/ it.
have cameras. Take a pic of their work, then turn it in through Google Classroom
Mystery Skype, Class projects via Padlet/docs ,etc.
then your “why” is letting it ride and seeing what happens!
A4 focus on what peaks your interest and run with it. No failure, just 1st, 2nd, 3rd, .... attempt
It would be better if she was holding yes?
A5-Conversations, engagement, EdTech doesn’t mean they get a . Conversation is still key.
But tech changes constantly. We must be able to deal with those flip phones (and rotary ones) too.
A5: that is a hard question. Sometimes it's the just seeing how Ss take responsibility for their learning
So many assume that if it’s not being tested or written down, it’s not happening. So frustrating
Before I started coding, I wanted my next step figured out. Can't lead Ss when you don't have direction
So important to build that grit in Ss personalities
A5:I'm starting to seek out tools that allow Ss to show mastery while impacting real world.the switch Ss must learn to flip
Hmm I just dive in. Starting w/ PK.Goal: exploration, familiarization.
A5: Like others have said, having a clear purpose is key. WHY are the kids using? What's the point?
If the Ss get out of their seats to tell others what they learned, it's effective! https://t.co/ofda7F3o2A
A5-Conversations, engagement, EdTech doesn’t mean they get a . Conversation is still key.
A5 If tech puts Ss in the drivers seat, then I think it goes beyond sole engagement.
Switching from to Challenge Based Learning - solving or finding real problems! https://t.co/9QUvMlbtBJ
A5:I'm starting to seek out tools that allow Ss to show mastery while impacting real world.the switch Ss must learn to flip
A5: Is there a value beyond school that you can show your admin? That's what I try to share if we are trying something new.
True, but how would it help advance my Ss? FlipPhone = wrong tool. For that matter, P&P are tech.
A5: Plan for formative assessments along the way. Prove w/data.
Exactly. Last year I did that with PK coding and iMovie. Creating directors and coders @ 4/5.
How do you find time? I feel so much pressure "Test" "Test" "Test". What tools have you found? https://t.co/ao2PSCspTs
A5:I'm starting to seek out tools that allow Ss to show mastery while impacting real world.the switch Ss must learn to flip
The question should not be WHAT tech, but HOW tech. To what end? For what purpose?
A5: Ss prompt you & their peers in discusion on the topic without you approaching them first. What if...?
A5: I try to work in a feedback/self-assessment aspect at end to collect Ss thoughts about why this worked or didn't work
A5: “Can I research this more after class?” Yes. Yes you can.
Depends. Is that what students have, what the district can afford? Are you buying it? Adapt. But Si.
that problem based learning. I love project&problem based learning. It has changed my classroom!
wow, that's crazy, what great testimony of survival!
A5:Product. Are they able 2 apply their learning using the tool? Make something other than playing? https://t.co/8WG3JaH3YM
Exactly. What tool do we have, what do we need, what can we afford, what does our district permit,
I want use of tech to become true civic work and digital leaders.
So true. Taking video and sharing it on Twitter tagging my district has been my other proof.
You are so right. If Dst won't buy, write grants. We can't sit back idly and not let Ss be prepared.
Good: S excited to share what learned. Better: S inspired to create/explore something new & share https://t.co/Nx47POjMoB
A5: “Can I research this more after class?” Yes. Yes you can.
Q6 coming up in 1 minute...
Yes, but I work in 2 schools, manage an iPad program, run a computer club, starting robots....
Through project, I've committed 20% of my time to facilitating THEIR passions. https://t.co/uP5xEP0c5J
How do you find time? I feel so much pressure "Test" "Test" "Test". What tools have you found? https://t.co/ao2PSCspTs
A5:I'm starting to seek out tools that allow Ss to show mastery while impacting real world.the switch Ss must learn to flip
A4: I do "bonus time" if Ss complete a non-interesting task, they get math/challenge game time https://t.co/MVPkCGY38f
look up West, Texas explosion. My Ss&colleagues have tremendous resiliency.I came after but blessed to be there
We've been working towards that with genius hour, it's been powerful https://t.co/d8Rms6wowG
I want use of tech to become true civic work and digital leaders.
GOTTA make time to play with it to get to know it! https://t.co/SXxOSfZRVM
A2- I no longer "search" for web tools. If my twitter PLN says x tool is great. I start playing. That keeps me busy.
Sometimes, I fear, we have to let Ss go unprepared. Force the bigger issue. Society must step up.
If you give an assignment and get 20 of the same exact thing, that’s a recipe, not a project
Sounds like it's cooking to me.
A5. Be able to show admin how it will boost Ss learning.
I get it- a lack of time and resources. All the more reason to advocate for your Ss and our profession.
A5: have even asked: some people say we're just playing here and not learning anything. Are they right? Prove it to me
A6: It's important to remember that it is just a tool. It won't replace good teaching
A6: I have a responsibility to guide and facilitate. You don't just turn Ss lose. It's the Ts responsibility to guide
Granted, 2 schools, 2 libraries, 2 programs, 1 tech 1 classroom based, forces me to run b/f walk
The older kidos aren't as forgiving.
I saw a meme this week- "If Siri can answer your Q, you're not thinking deeply enough" Love! https://t.co/nfBMm9ANzE
I have yet to ask Siri anything and I'm an power user! Missing out?
good teachers w/tech tools are game changers!
I enjoy your insights. They mirror my own. Does your building think similarly or do you live on an island?
Nope. They're not. Thankfully, I stop @ 6th.
Exactly! A force to reckon with
A6:Edtech offers creativity and connectivity like nothing else can. It's the ONLY thing fit for the job
A6a-There will always be in teaching, EdTech, or no. The tool is only as good as the craftsman using it.
A6: we say all the time tech will never replace good pedagogy we can only enhance what we do well empower Ss to greatness
Amen, amen, amen! https://t.co/5YIsBJ7to2
A2- I no longer "search" for web tools. If my twitter PLN says x tool is great. I start playing. That keeps me busy.
A6 A kid can also only learn so much from reading a book. Human interaction is essential. Always has been; always will be.
A6: None of these is an end; they are means. Also, akin to Web 2.0, Ss need to synthesize and at some point, create.
They're right. We presume our "digital natives" (ugh) can do anything. Need & education on tool use. home is diff.
A6: We won’t get anywhere expecting tech to change things. We change things with tech.
A6. The power of EdTech isn't in consumption of media. It's creating something new w/what you've learned. Making is power!
A6 This is why we need information literacy and our libraries ...
Relationships, relationships, relationships! https://t.co/eXjYw9719v
A6 A kid can also only learn so much from reading a book. Human interaction is essential. Always has been; always will be.
I had a Ss tell me “I wish my T’s and P’s knew that I don’t know as much about tech as they think” https://t.co/BesA4iuzy0
They're right. We presume our "digital natives" (ugh) can do anything. Need & education on tool use. home is diff.
Yes but Siri's answer about 0 divided my 0 is better than any explanation any teacher ever gave!
It's not free time. It's Genius Hour.
A6: What was the question again? Oh, sorry...I quoted the question....let me read it again! https://t.co/dCQAiaQtIi
Just like man once changed things with his use of fire
A6b respons. lies w/ teacher, not tech. Its one more club in the bag to help I choose my shots. Ts/Ss can’t win W/ 1 club
Tech is the track, but not the train. https://t.co/TIywmEpLws
A6: We won’t get anywhere expecting tech to change things. We change things with tech.
But with a book, +iPad, +VR/AR I can learn plenty :)
I preach all the time. This is critics and I am fanatic about it https://t.co/7DDhfODQbp
They're right. We presume our "digital natives" (ugh) can do anything. Need & education on tool use. home is diff.
A6: Students need a purpose, goal, expectation. Tech is only a toy if we don't have clear outcomes for students
A6: Tech cannot replace great teaching. It can help the most with getting access to content
Fire is tech and man still changes things with it.
A6: I agree! It's about what the Ss does w/the new info learned from the tech.
Make sure you follow each other and grow that !
Preach it! If tech could replace teachers it would! Tech is a tool that makes a good teacher better https://t.co/wq4q89eHUd
A6: We won’t get anywhere expecting tech to change things. We change things with tech.
HA! I had to ask Siri to see- "cookie monster is sad."
Thanks again, family, for an excellent chat!
We will be at this year, come out and meet us and enjoy a great conference
Just saw an opening. Can't stand term "Digital Native." It lets them get away w/ too much.
At times one needs to outsource. Besides, Siri will just keep getting better &better.
A6 Usually, Ss are given more responsibility when tech comes in. Tech doesn't poof make Ss experts. Still need checkpoints
I dove in at first too. Some of the kids found it frustrating.
Now this is a good way to make sense of higher level thinking!
Boom! Tweet of the day... https://t.co/dwMXULmG45
I saw a meme this week- "If Siri can answer your Q, you're not thinking deeply enough" Love! https://t.co/nfBMm9ANzE
I have yet to ask Siri anything and I'm an power user! Missing out?
TY and all those who participated Great chat tonight!
Thanks for another enlightening chat! Hope to see you next week.
